getting back into OCs as an adult?? (G)

hello darlings. i posted some OC stuff just a minute ago with an old Dainty I made 5 years ago, and it brought me a lot of joy but I'm also feeling frozen about it
I want to get into character making again, and then actually Using them and Building them. it's hard to do after a 5 year hiatus.
If anyone else has gone through a similar dry spell before returning to something like this, how did you rediscover the creativity in it?? How do you build your characters and make them exciting beyond just visual design??
I want to make some '''''''regular'''''''''' ocs too, lucky is fun but a closes species is very. limiting, I'll say
