I realized something rather detrimental today... (G)

I can't shade for shit. I've been using the damn blur tool in photoshop cs5, but it's a really crappy way for me to shade and while I can shade fur decently enough with the multiply mask and burn tools in ps, I can't shade dragons or scalies to save my life... Which seriously wounds my chances of doing a good job on the commissions I have for my Iron Artist Challenge because the first three that were ordered are dragons and reptiles...
If anyone has a quick tutorial on shading smooth skin like scales, that would be nice... Cause while the shading Feverdog/Astral Moon showed me is nice for fur... I can't make it work for the scales. This sucks and I'm getting more frustrated by the minute. To the point where I saved an extra copy of the drawing just so I could scribble on it and take my anger at myself out on it. FML big time...
Someone give me a simple scale shading tutorial! For the love of all that is holy, help! Cause I can't find one here or on google. >/ Fucking google...
