Bulloak Jewel Butterfly Western Dragon Hybrid Lore + Full character & species info
Please be warned this is a long read and no one may read it but I wanted to post it anyway! :)
Some parts will be a bit corny ngl, but all in all I think I’m quite happy with what I’ve come up with.
The Bulloak Jewel is a real Butterfly species and some information in my lore is correct and based around this fact, however ofcourse a lot of the ideas around my species lore are fantasy :)
Many thanks to Feve who did a really amazing job with bringing Aster to life, as the design was quite complex and as a Butterfly Dragon hybrid itself is quite rare I couldn’t be happier with how this turned out! :D

If you would like to make a Butterfly Dragon of your own and found some inspiration through my fursona or would like to use some of my lore ideas that is great but please kindly mention me and link my profile, that would be much appreciated. :)
I decided I wanted a Butterfly Dragon species cross due to me always loving them as and resonating with those two species as long as I can remember but besides this I found inspiration for the art via the partciular Bulloak Jewel species of Butterfly itself and got design and future fursuit ideas mainly from Fructose_c https://twitter.com/Fructose_c who owns a beautiful Butterfly Dragon fursona & fursuit and also yimaniao https://twitter.com/yimaniao & qian_xuan777 https://twitter.com/qian_xuan777 who designed and made the refsheet & fursuit.
Now onto some background on the Bulloak Jewel Butterfly which may help you understand more about my fursona hybrid :)
The Bulloak Jewel Butterfly is a real and very rare and endangered species of Butterfly that is found in a few very small areas just west of the Darling Downs, Australia
The Darling Downs is a farming region on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in Southern Queensland, Australia. This particular area is in the east of the country
The Bulloak Jewel Butterlies habitat is on the Buloke or Bull-Oak tree, the tree itself has been greatly cleared for cropping and pasture development which has made the Butterfly suffer from tremendous habitat declines causing the species be on the verge of extinction.
In addition to this coupled with the Butterflies symbiotic relationship with an unnamed ant species which is very finicky on its habitat below the Buloke trees means the Butterfly is very rarely seen and few remain.
Onto the lore for my fursona species :)
The Bulloak Jewel Western Dragon Butterfly Hybrid first came into being in April of the year 1920 AD.
The species is crossed between a Western Dragon and the Bulloak Jewel Butterfly.
It began around a month before this when the Butterfly species my hybrid is crossed with was on the verge of extinction due to the Buloke trees it calls home being heavily cleared for farming and industry. The Butterflies had just laid eggs which were larger than usual, in total there were 10, all of these eggs hatched and significantly large catterpillars emerged.
These catterpillars quickly grew as large as a mans arm and fattened up on leaves tremendously fast, by the next morning the catterpillars had pupated and were hanging from the branches of the tree. The pupas remained stationery, seemingly lifeless until daybreak the next morning. When the sun rose the pupas burst open to reveal 10 ten beautiful giant Bulloak Jewel Butterfllies roughly the size of a teenage human.
The Butterflies were not in the area long and quickly all flew off in different directions, the Butterflies flew far and wide across the seas as if to try and escape the predicament their species was in and to seek out settlement in new areas to rebuild the species. The Butterflies came across various different kinds of Western Dragon during their travels and mated with them. After a few weeks the Butterflies returned to their home where their smaller brothers & sisters remained.
The 10 giant butterflies then rested and laid only 1 egg each, the eggs were about the size of a Ostrich egg and each egg had a different colour and pattern on it, corresponding to a mix of colours of the Butterfly and each Dragons colour that the Butterfly mated with. The eggs took a few days to hatch.
When the eggs hatched beautiful Bulloak Jewel Butterflys crossed with Western Dragons emerged and a new species was born. Each of the hatchlings looked similar with regards to general features and size, however they had some differences in colour mixes and pattern placement which made each one unique.
The hatchlings grew at a similar rate to humans in size, however they seemed to grow quicker and seemed to be at full size at age 12 and matured at age 10. Once they were full grown they had similar proportions to adult humans.
Some more regarding my Fursona specifically (Aster) and further details about the species interested (long) :)
Aster is a bi/pansexual male of his species who is around 15 years old and is a 5th generation of his kind, he, like all of his kin descended from one of the fabled ten giant Butterflies that mated with Dragons and gave birth to the hybrids. The species of which he is part of matures at around 10 years old and typically lives to around 50- 60 years old. His species grows in simliar rates in size to Humans however quicker due to their shorter lifespan. They eventually grow to similar proportions of a adult human once they reach full size at around age 12.
This particular species is a guardian for the Bulloak Jewel Butterfly species itself that resides in Australia and they protect their more fragile friends from harm. The Butterfly Dragon hybrids are resourceful and have made a village with shelters nearby to the Butterfly species that they protect. When they come of age many of the hybrids leave the area and travel the world, while some stay behind to watch over their Butterfly friends and to look after the young of their species, the members of the species that stay behind are referred to as the Elders.
The species has as much flying ability as a teenage Dragon despite having smaller wings than a typical fully grown Western Dragon so can travel with no real difficulty including across seas, however they do have limits on how high and far they can fly without resting.
The Butterfly Dragon hybrids are able to inhale the air around them and concentrate their breath into small fireballs to protect themselves and the Bulloak Jewel Butterflies from threats if need be. They cannot concentrate fire into a beam or breathe fire at will unlike larger Dragons. The species is normally peaceful and welcomes animal, furry/scaly and human visitors and researchers alike to see them and their insect brothers and sisters.
The hybrids have also gained the ability through their miraculous births akin to what the untrained eye would call “healing magic.” What the hybrids are able to do involves them being able to transfer their energy into living beings such as animals, humans and flora & fauna such as dying trees and injured or sick creatures in order to heal them.
This process drains the hybrid so usually they are only able to heal something once a day, for large beings such as trees many of the hybrids have to touch the affected object in order to summon up enough strength and transfer enough life force in order to heal it. The hybrids would rather heal than harm and have a great deal of empathy, in essence they are able to feel a creatures pain or distress and this extends to plant life.
Aster is a Butterfly Dragon that left his native home when he came of age. He can be quite shy, especially around strangers but at heart he actually has a very fun loving and somewhat outgoing personality. In particular this side of him shows more when he gets used to a person or if he is either next to someone or talking to someone online that he is comfortable with.
Despite Aster appearing shy at first glance he is quite flirtatious and can be of a promiscious nature. He likes to pretend to be shy and innocent but in reality this couldn’t be further from the truth ;)
The young Butterfly Dragon always looks to make friends rather than enemies and is in general kind hearted and very loving. He adores snuggles!
Aster is named after a purple flower that represents patience, elegance and daintiness and is a gender neutral name.
Asters are native to Australia where my species originates
I am English but my irl name is actually of Australian origin so it was funny that a Butterfly i found that I liked the colour combo of for my fursona also turns out to be from Australia :)
The Bulloak Jewel of which the Butterfly part of my fursona is based is a real Butterfly species and is critically endangered.
Species “awakened” and non awakened forms”
My species has two forms, a "awakened" and "non awakened" form. Most of the hybrids you see will be in their non awakened form as this is the form they will usually take when not flying long distances or when there is no threat present. Another reason is because most of the hybrids have not taken on an awakened form, some of the species never awaken throughout their life, less than a third or so of the hybrids will ever attain an awakened form.
The awakening has more chance to occur the older a member of the species gets and involves their powerful Western Dragon side coming out more and having a effect on their body and abilities, one example of this transformation includes the hybrid growing in size, their butterfly wings also grow larger in comparison to the rest of their body than before and also become much more accentuated.
Due to the transformation they gain more full abilities a large Dragon would have such as being able to breathe fire and are now able to fly longer and further with ease.
Once the awakening has occurred, the hybrids are able to change between the two forms at will and they are no longer as limited in power as a hybrid that has not awakened. Limitations on an awakened hybrids "healing magic" are not as pronounced as the non awakened form of the species as it has much more energy it can transfer to a living creature.
A awakened form of the species is able to heal a fully grown tree on its own in one day, a feat what would take around 10 of its non awakened kind to perform, they then have to wait another day before it can heal something again if they heal something large such as a tree by themselves, however healing of small animals and plants is now trivial to them and they can do this multiple times a day.
When there is no threat present and no extensive flying needed, an awakened hybrid tends to only choose to be in its awakened state when it is on its own in wild areas such as caves, forests, deserts etc. When one of the hybrids has awakened they can tend to become rather solitary and will wander such areas, live in them by themselves and stay in their awakened form.
However there are some awakened hybrids that stay much the same after their first transition and remain social and amongst others, rarely showing their awakened state.
Please be warned this is a long read and no one may read it but I wanted to post it anyway! :)
