It seems to me that one of the reasons people like twitter is because it allows them to get people to pay attention to them without having to do any work. On blogs and the like (tumblr does not count here), you have to say something worthwhile for people to read your blog, but on social media, it is more like "I'll pay attention to what you say if you pay attention to what I say--regardless of its value." The average amount of twitter followers is two hundred, and it can feel amazing to think that two hundred people actually care about what you have to say. It is fascinating to watch people step away from twitter without telling anyone and discover that no one misses them.
One thing that annoys me to no end is when people want to relabel autism, an official diagnosis, to the "Highly Sensitive Person" personality type, or worse, empty new-age terms such as "Indigo child". A reason for this that I can think of is that they link autism to a lot of negative prejudices they would rather not be associated with. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, "highly sensitive people" might well be a little closer to the autistic end than the average person-- not quite as good at processing stimuli as the average person, but not bad enough to be full-blown autistic. Or maybe they are, but just do not like the label. And that is what I find most bothersome: if everyone thinks the label "autistic" is too negative and starts coming up with more interesting names, people will only see autism in a more and more negative light. Because all of those individual people, no, they are highly sensitive! It is only angry teenagers and ex-husbands who are autistic.

The way adults act is not actually any more mature than the way kids act, it just tends to be dressed up in more high-minded language.
