Yo! Welcome to my lair! I’m a software engineer in healthcare IT and a hobby musician out of Madison, Wisconsin. I’ve been an on-again, off-again furry for about 15 years. If I post anything, it’ll be music, journals, or really bad attempts at art. I was a music major in college, for all that my professional career has nothing whatsoever to do with music. My taste in just about everything is strange, so don’t be surprised if I really like something that is objectively “meh”. I’m always willing to chat with new folks, so feel free to drop me a line if you’re interested for whatever reason.

An Awesome Discovery (G)
Okay, I admit...this is a repost of a journal I put on SoFurry last week. In my defense, I just joined this site and felt awkward not having anything posted. Anyway...
I have made a wonderful discovery this week...
Okay, this requires some backstory. I love really bad movies. I have a bad movie reputation among my less-humored friends because my movie tastes fall precisely opposite that of normal people. I really hate inspirational stories. That sounds really cynical (and there is some truth to that), but inspiriational movies like The Blind Side (true story that it is) seem cheezy and unrealistic to me. Likewise, I really hate romance flicks of all sorts for the same reason. Interestingly enough, I like inspirational and romantic literature and devour it at an incredible pace (I read 2 novels today, but school's out for the holidays, so I have some excuse). Dramas and action movies can be okay if I'm in the right mood. Hands down, though, if I'm in a bad mood and just want to curl up with a movie, I gravitate towards campy B-horror movies from the 60's and really bad Kung-Fu movies. It is telling that when I go to my netflix home page, the top category that pops up is Chinese Revenge-Action movies from the 70's and 80's. There's no thrill quite like sitting down with a few like-minded friends and tearing apart a really bad movie.
As an illustration, here's a pretty decent list of my favorite bad movies:
Black Dynamite: the most perfect parody movie ever made. Michael Jai White is Black Dynamite: a former CIA agent, Kung-Fu master, and black revolutionist whose brother is killed by a drug lord. The movie is about Black Dynamite's quest to clean up the streets of his city, get revenge on the man who killed his brother, and gain equality for the oppressed black race. The movie includes so many purposeful continuity errors, bad camera focuses, great 1-liners, awkward pauses, and stupid fight sequences that it is awe-inspiring. If you like bad movies (or even if you don't), you will enjoy this movie.
What's Up Tiger Lilly?: Woody Allen's directorial debut, What's Up Tiger Lilly is a 60's Japanese spy movie that Allen rewrote the script for and dubbed over. He turned a wannabe foreign James Bond film into the search for the perfect Potato Salad recipe. It's wonderfully quirky and delightfully bad.
Vibes: Jeff Goldblum and Cindy Lauper star in this film about 2 psychics who travel to Ecuador to try and find a man's lost son. Their employer is not being honest with them, however and the 2 psychics must join forces to prevent the destruction of the world as we know it by an ancient supernatural force. The plot speaks for itself.
Plan 9 From Outer Space: Ed Wood's masterpiece about an alien plot to take over the world (the 9th such attempt, apparently the first 8 failed), which consists of turning the recently deceased into zombies and vampires under control of the evil alien overlords. This movie features some of the worst sets, acting, and plot of any I have ever seen and the best part is it's not on purpose.
The Crippled Masters: An evil Kung-Fu genious burns off the legs of one man with acid and chops off the arms of another. They team up and work together to overthrow his evil regime and restore peace to the province. This is literally the worst Kung-Fu movie I have ever seen...and I've seen a lot of bad Kung-Fu movies.
Other movies that I won't go in-depth on that I love nevertheless are Mel Brooks' movies, Monty Python's movies, Strange Brew, The Last Airbender, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Time Bandits, Cannibal: the Musical, and many other such quirky and wonderful films. If you happen to know of other such films that you think I'd enjoy, please comment and tell me about them.
On that note, I found a show this week that I'm sure many others were already aware of, but the discovery of which has been my joy for the past few days. I was cruising Netflix and saw a curious film called Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. I thought to myself that it looked quite intriguing and proceeded to watch it. It turns out that Mystery Science Theater 3000 (hereby referred to as MST3K) is a TV show from the 80's and 90's wherein 3 guys (actually 1 guy and 2 robots, but that's just semantics) watch really bad Sci-Fi movies and make fun of them. Christmas came early for me on Saturday with this show and if you haven't seen or heard of MST3K and liked the sound of the movies I listed earlier, check it out. You will laugh your ass off.
