I have autism (G)
I know I don't really talk on here, but since this is important to me I thought I would make a psa.
Today I was formerly diagnosed with autism. And that is a big relief to me. I also turn 30 this month. Having this diagnosis helps me understand myself a lot more than I ever have. It really connects the dots and explains to me why I am the way I am. Why, I have always felt so different. For a LONG time I thought I was broken, there was something wrong with me. I should feel this or that, or be doing this or that. Or, this or that shouldn't be so hard. Everyone else can do it, why can't I? Why is being an adult so hard?
And now I know. And when anyone asks, now I have an answer. When they don't understand why I do, or don't do something, I can explain why. Before, I just thought I was dumb or lazy. But I am not.
For anyone that might suspect they are autistic, this is what I did:
Note: I am fortunate enough to have a job that provides decent insurance at a low cost.
I FINALLY found myself a primary care physician (PCP) and on my 1st visit (which was March 19th) asked for a referral. He had me meet with the therapist in the office and she offered to search for specialists that could diagnose adults. Gave me a few names and phone numbers. I was lucky enough to find a specialist that was willing to set up our 1st appointment by text message. Didn't have to call or go in person. I had 5 sessions over the phone with her going over my life and we went through a series behavioral checklists. Between my 1st visit to the PCP and today, took about 7 weeks!
