Way to drop the ball guys.
General | Posted 15 years agoMarvel vs. Capcom 3... we need to talk. It's suddenly looking like I won't be spending as much time with you as I originally thought. I love ya, but your online is ass.
Just these last couple days I tried taking this game on Xbox Live. Online mode is absolute garbage! Lag even on 4-bar connections and that's assuming I can even get a match to begin with. Ninety percent of the time it fails to connect and half of that time it logs me out of Xbox live completely for some damned reason. And the ranked options suck too. Click search and cross your fingers. You can't even do custom searches and look through a list of results like in SF4. You fight a person with bad ping you're shit out of luck.
Way to drop the ball on the game's single most important mode Capcom. What the hell? Now it's not the worst online I've ever played in a fighter but I guess this one especially stings because all the buzz leading up to release about good netcode was PR blowing smoke up our assess. The overall lack of offline modes to means that unless netcode is patched, this game is going to be in almost the same boat as King of Fighters XII. *shudders*
When Virtua Fighter 5, a game released by Sega on Xbox as an afterthought, has better netcode than you there is a problem. As it stands, Blazblue is still the best fighter as an overall product on the market and its online is great. I'll probably go back to it in a couple weeks which is disappointing to say the least. More people need to follow the example Bamco is setting with that Dragonball game using GGPO. GGPO is the benchmark of good online for fighters.
I can't believe I'm saying this but depending on how it turns out I may actually end up playing Mortal Kombat 9 more than MvC3. I think I feel dizzy now.

Bionic AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM!
General | Posted 15 years agoI'm maining Spencer in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 largely because I fangasm over Bionic Commando. He's the point character on my primary team. The guy has a lot of potential I think. He may need a projectile assist to cover his approach but he hits like a ****ing truck and is absolutely beast in a corner.
People are just scratching the surface of what all characters can do, but as a Spencer player, discoveries like the jcc H Grapple shown in the following vid make me positively giddy.

This one is just plain showing off.

Make fun of the dreads! I dare ya! I double dare ya! XD

MvC3: I Dream of DLC - Capcom
General | Posted 15 years agoNow for my thoughts on desired DLC for the Capcom side.
Capcom
Gene
I'm of course talking about the hero from God Hand. This just seems to make so much sense it's absurd. God Hand has achieved cult status in a remarkebly short amount of time. Despite it not achieving serious mainstream success it really seems to have struck a chord with the hardcore crowd. In a poll was voted 16th most desired on a list of 55. That's compared to characters from madly popular franchises like Megaman, Resident Evil, and Sengoku Basara. The demand is there.
Another reason it seems to make so much sense is Gene's movelist is already good as made. Part of what made God Hand so memorable and awesome was the fact Gene's movelist was customizable. You literally got to choose from several dozen separate and unique moves to make him fight how you like. As such it seems programming Gene into a fighter would be comparatively easier than building a character from scratch sense the aesthetic work is already done.
Gene's attacks are already made. Capcom could just take what they like and use it. Take some normal moves from God Hand to make his normals. He even had launchers for juggles. God Roulette moves could be his special and hyper attacks. Hell, let him unleash the God Hand for a Hyper. It all seems like it would be such a no-brainer.
Other thoughts on Capcom...
My opinion on Capcom's roster picks is more mixed. I don't think they had any more bad choices then Marvel, but they seem to suffer from different problem Marvel doesn't need to worry about. Capcom's roster seems to have an issue with over-representation of a few franchises. While there were several delightful inclusions such as Haggar, Spencer, Ammy and Arthur, we conversely have four Street Fighter reps, an all girl trio representing Darkstalkers and so on. Also, Capcom only has one villain whil Marvel has seven. The spread just feels imbalanced. Like something is missing.
The Capcom roster could use a few things to feel more rounded. I really want to see at least one more villain and Sigma is in my opinion the best they have after Wesker. As criminal as no Megaman may be I would honestly rather have Sigma at this point. But on the other hand I also really want to see other franchises get repped. To that effect I'd be more than happy to see somebody from Power Stone, Rival Schools, Breath of Fire, Dead Rising etc.
As long as they don't add any more characters from Street Fighter, Resident Evil and Devil May Cry I think they'll be okay. I'll let one more Darkstalker character slide as long as it's a guy and one of the most popular ones. Raptor, Talbain, Demitri, Donovan or gtfo. If I see Q-Bee or B.B. Hood I'm going to totally flip my shit.
And now I wait until 10 am to buy the game tomorrow.

MvC3: I Dream of DLC - Marvel
General | Posted 15 years agoOkey dokey, so the launch roster for MvC3 has been out for a while now and with endless talk about DLC wants and whatnot I thought I'd throw my hatt in the ring and kind of amend my wish-list from so long ago. Since I'm sure DLC slots are limited I'm going to boil it down to one pick I want per side followed by some assorted thoughts.
Marvel
Moon Knight
I'm a really big Moon Knight fan and that's the biggest reason I want him in. Same reason I'm sure tons of characters are being requested. However I think Moon Knight has something else going for him which makes his inclusion more feasible than some others.
Marvel has really been trying to push Moony since about 2006 but it just hasn't panned out for some reason and his comics keep getting shorter runs. His last one, Vengeance of the Moon Knight, was canceled after just ten issues. Well, Marvel is trying to push him again come May with a new ongoing writer Bendis and artist Maleev. What better way to build interest and hype in a character and his new ongoing then to make him playable in a successful video game? It would seem to be a good marketing move for Marvel and the Moon Knight fans would be happy.
Now, what Bendis is saying about his approach to this new comic may have me utterly horrified (story for another time) but that's beside the point. Moon Knight doesn't get enough respect and I'd desperately want him to get a little more exposure and, heaven forbid, some success.
Other thoughts on Marvel...
Honestly I think Marvel could chuck in almost anybody at this point. They got pretty much everyone I wanted to see. We've got the Avengers, some X-men, Spider-man, some good villains and a handful of other nice picks. Ideally a few more solo acts like Daredevil or Iron fist would be nice, but I won't complain is we see another X-man like Cyclops if you get what I mean. I may not be happy with all the inclusions but I'm happy with the roster on the whole. Anybody added at this point is just more icing on an already delicious cake.
Tune in later to hear my thoughts on the Capcom side of the roster.

Personal Theme Music?
General | Posted 15 years agoThis was a little thought that crossed my mind today. Anybody remember that one journal meme from over a year ago where you post and the journal writer would answer several things? One of those things was a song that reminded them of you or something like that. It got me thinking about identifying yourself through music.
I'm sure everybody has done it at some point. Taking a song that clicks with you and kinda labeling it in your head and your own personal theme. It's fun to think that way. Thing is, I was just this afternoon and I had a lot a trouble with it because I find it's very difficult to pick a song for yourself that you should pick as opposed to one you want to pick.
For example, I'd love to have my theme be something like a Tekken song or one of the awesome jazzy tracks from the Yakuza games, but I ultimately feel their sound doesn't really convey my personality too well. They're too aggressive or badass if you will and that's not really me. It's really kind of hard to be subjective of yourself that way and I was committed to picking a song I felt truly had a sound that conveyed my personality. Here's what I came up with in a few hours this afternoon. My (current) theme song of my choosing.
https://youtu.be/xa_thnRE4SU
So, for anyone who has read this far I've got two little questions/requests:
1. Those of you who know me, do you think this song fits or can you think of one you think fits me better.
2. I'd love to hear some of you post songs you think suit you.
I guess there's no real point to this journal. Just more brain droppings I felt like sharing. X3

Anarchy Reigns - Found my Main
General | Posted 15 years agoMan, Anarchy Reigns has only just been revealed. Only like three Sega blog entries in and I already know who I'm using. Gee, I wonder why I'm using this guy? (sarcasm)
https://youtu.be/X3c2at0WPDg
Am I the only one who sees a passing resemblance to the ARS suit in Vanquish here? I think it's the three bits on the thighs there.

Anarchy Reigns
General | Posted 15 years agoWell, seems today that Sega decided to release a teaser of the next big title Platinum Games has in store for us. I was only recently informed about the game in general, so this teaser is pretty timely for me. Check it out.
https://youtu.be/Vmo4aCAogH0
Now my ears perk up anytime I hear about anything Platinum is doing but what really got my attention with this one is apparently it's going to be based on MadWorld. I loved MadWorld. Such a criminally under-appreciated game. In my opinion of the four games released by Platinum so far, MadWorld was the second best right after Vanquish.
What also get's me particularly interested is the way they try describing the game. It's been referred to as a massively-multiplayer online melee fighting action game. For starters it's a breath of fresh air to see MMO followed by something other than RPG. While this description certainly brings up questions about gameplay, what I find more interesting is what this could entail for community.
MMO's by nature are very online community based. Since Anarchy Reigns is based on MadWorld one has to wonder whether the world we play in will be one huge free-for-all. If so, how do you interact with others? How do you form a community in that environment? My imagination may simply be running wild, but I can't wait to see if "Anarchy Reigns" is a title more appropriate than we realize.

The Marvel vs Capcom 3 Roster...WTF?
General | Posted 15 years agoLadies and gentlemen it's time for me to get on my podium and do some bitching.
Withing the last several hours of posting this journal, Capcom has announced two more characters to the MvC3 roster and pulled down a supposed leaked image revealing a character prematurely. This wouldn't be huge news if not for the fact it adds a lot of legitimacy to an alleged complete roster list that was leaked in November.
Now, on the whole I've been really happy with the roster for the most part. It's been a good mix of icon from both sides as well as more niche inclusions, particularly on the Capcom side. However there have been a handful of inclusions which just annoy me. Some flat out piss me off. I could complain about who I think should be in but everybody has their favorites so listing my picks seems moot. I'm simply going to complain about characters whose inclusion is completely irredeemable in my eyes. This is also under the assumption this leaked roster is true but as such I'm going to list fighters depending on if they've been officially confirmed or not.
Confirmed
- X-23: For all intents and purposes she looks like a female Wolverive. Martial artist with claws. We already have that. It's not that she's unpopular. She's kind of like Harley Quinn in that she made the jump from a TV adaption to comic. She's popular enough. It's just we already have a fighter with the same kind of fighting aesthetic. We don't need two slashy claw fighters. The only thing X-23 brings is another X chromosome. If the game was going to have a female assassin martial artist why not get more variety and go for Psylocke or Electra?
- Shuma-Gorath: I will never understand how this guy got into games to begin with. He's obscure even for comic enthusiasts. He's a Doctor Strange villain who I think showed up maybe twice. I mean shit, Dormammu is less obscure. Why waste space on a guy like this? And a DLC slot no less. You're paying for this random piece of crap.
- Trish: I'm ecstatic Devil May Cry is getting repped but it only needed Dante and he was revealed early. Trish's style is being completely pulled out the ass since the one time we saw her fight she looked like someone else completely and didn't even use the Sparda sword. If you're going to make a character from scratch why not make one from an unrepresented series? I hate her inclusion because it was a wasted opportunity.
- Jill: Any Resident Evil character who isn't a monster will fall into one of two categories with fighting style: Brawling plus weapons or wire-fu martial arts. Chris fits the first role, Wesker fits the second. There is literally nothing Jill can bring to the table that hasn't already been covered. To add insult to injury this is the third representative not from the RE series, but a single game in the series. You couldn't even mix it up and maybe pick Ada or Claire? It had to be Jill specifically from RE5? The series didn't need three reps. RE5 sure as hell didn't need three reps especially since it was only okay. Oh, and just to rub salt and lemon juice in the injury you got prior to the insult her RE5 appearance looks like fucking Nina Williams. Dammit Capcom! Save that shit for your Tekken crossover.
Unconfirmed
- Sentinel: I really wish the leaked list was being coy with this name and was actually referring to Bastion or Omega Sentinel but it's not. It's talking about the fucking giant mass produced robot with absolutely zero personality. The one and only possible reason this thing could be coming back for MvC3 is because Sentinel was one of the infamous "God Tier" characters of MvC2 which is absolutely the stupidest reason to include a character in this game.
- Hsien-Ko in addition to Felicia and Morrigan: This is more anger at the principle of the thing than the character herself. I like every character in Darkstalkers. What I don't like is when a crossover is called for how these three are always first in line to rep the series for no other merit other than the moe factor. Morrigan is the exception obviously since she's the flagship character but still. It's been the trend for far too long. These three stand before all others in the Darkstalkers series when it comes to appearances despite the fact most all the characters have sizable fanbases. Three Darkstalkers in MvC3 and not one could have been a person outside this trinity? You couldn't throw a bone to the Talbain, Raptor or Demitri fans? It's especially infuriating when you read in an interview they seriously considered putting the extremely awesome Donovan on the roster but he was cut near the end. Fuck!
- Akuma: I'm fine with another street fighter. Hell, I wanted another one. Capcom villains are woefully underrepresented and adding the iconic Bison would have been a good move in my opinion. So what do we get? Akuma, another fucking shoto-clone. Goddammit!!!
I hope the DLC is good. I really do because the complete lack of any Megaman is mind-blowingy criminal to the spirit of this kind of game.

On Darkstalkers and Animation
General | Posted 15 years agoI check the front page or Shoryuken.com on a fairly regular basis. They recently linked to an article posted in mid summer about the art and animation in the Darkstalkers games, a series very near and dear to my heart. I own some Darkstalkers art books and this kind of analysis fascinates me so considering this is an art based community I thought I'd share it here as well. Check it out. It's a cool read with visual examples.
Darkstalkers and the Twelve Principles of Animation
For years I've been of the opinion that Darkstalkers is as much a piece of visual art as it is a fun game series though I could never really articulate why beyond saying "The art and animation is good". This article manages to show exactly why it is and I really think it's testament to the kind of creative talent Capcom has attracted in the past. The kind of talent they can still attract.
It also makes me come to something of a realization. Ever since Capcom has helped revive the fighting game scene, fans have been vocal in their desire for a new Darkstalkers but Capcom hasn't said much on the issue. Realistically I know it's most likely due to them having their hands full with at least four other fighters at the moment and possibly them being unsure if a new Darkstalkers would be a profitable investment. Though now the art enthusiast in me wonders if maybe on some level art design may be holding them back.
To be perfectly honest I'd not confident Darkstalkers can be approached the same way as Street Fighter 4 was in a graphical sense. Despite how dated it is, I look at Morrigan's sprite and I find it far more interesting to watch than her 3-D models in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. A new Darkstalkers would need to evolve visually but shifting to 3-D models almost feels like a step in the wrong direction and wouldn't do justice to the amazing designs and remarkable, dynamic animation that's partly responsible for making the series so memorable. Still using sprites almost seems the most appealing but it's very time consuming nowadays and some kind of visual spin would probably be needed, but what?
I'm probably reading to deep into this but it's a thought I had nonetheless. Now I feel like watching the anime again. X3
