Patreon: the good and the bad
Posted 11 years agoWas talking with steeltigerwolf about this several times. Decided to make a thread about it because it has been the new trend lately, people making Patreon accounts a lot... I can't really make up an opinion yet because I have mixed feelings about it (unlike Facebook wich I hate) there are good things and bad things about it, I might also be editing this journal several times because of typos (english isn't my main language) so beware...
BUT WHAT THE FUCK IS PATREON?
Patreon is like a kickstarter project when you pledge some quantity of money and "get subscribed" to updates that can occur weekly, monthly, etc. depending of the founder and what they do, you receive rewards like exclusive sketches, PSD files, whatever they want to put every update.
YOUR A PATREON USER RIGHT?
Yes. Reason of why I can see many things over here. ;P
The Good about Patreon:
-Works well and easy with Paypal or credit/debit card.
-Getting rewards of the artists you admire, learning from their technique and stuff if you want.
-Getting to contact to them... almost. Because they're filled with messages over FA and possibly feeling not in the mood to respond. (but it's just an excuse, knowing that professionalists like Will Terrell* ALWAYS respond to comments, but that depends of each person, sometimes they don't really have the time, sometimes they really don't want to, but that's offtopic).
-Patreon exchanges money each update wich it leaves you time to regret (most likely I have subscribed and unsubscribed from several ppl now).
-Easy site access... yeah just like Facebook... without the whole "depending of all people updates" annoying thingie.
-Artists can win money easily from little tip jars (little by little) and possibly live from it (HELL, I hear of ppl winning 2k at month and 10k... or more).
(*)BTW he does have a Patreon too...
The bad about Patreon...
-BEWARE IT'S A MONEY EATER! it is, when they take your money off for each update they will! last time I didn't realize they took -20$ idk why but I haven't seen it on my e-mail... so watch out.
-The simple idea of "pay me for whatever I want to do" can sound ridiculous to certain people, not my opinion but really, imagine this, imagine you're being paid for doing what you want (farting? :P) it's a miracle for the artist yes, but really a let down for many others who are trying to make a live with their art. So you must offer something for people too! Some artists does it, some don't. I didn't get paid for the comics I do, not even a single tip, but here I am wanting to make new ones I guess.
-Subscribing weekly, IF YOU SUBSCRIBED LATE YOU MISSED UPDATES, it's like subscribing a magazine and missing the old issues! I can't tell if this is artists fault, but it's something really shitty because if you're subscribed by now you're basically missing all the other awesome stuff, not saying that new stuff can be worse, but it's a little unfair for newcomers. But it also would be unfair for those who were donating before... unless if the artists decides to include old stuff in the zip pack or making a digital download stock, wich not many do.
-People using Dropbox to send files, again not sure if this is Patreon's fault, but cloud drives exists for a reason! Search for them! (Dropbox has some limits and most likely you need to pay premium membership to unlock them)
-Surviving rule: you won't be successful if you're not recognized enough...
Thanks to Patreon little artists are getting less and less commissions, new starter artists can't get money at all or just a really little quantity, I'm suspecting that is Patreon's fault because it's been happening lately. I don't think I ever had problems on getting clients like now, and let me tell you, many artists lives from doing commissions, even if it sounds impossible. Patreon does good things for certain people and bad things for other people. IT IS POSSIBLE to live from doing art and becoming and professionalist, but it looks like a constant surviving battle from my point of view, and something that only an elite group can succeed... and it shouldn't be like that, oh well.
Again, mixed feelings about this, I'm subscribed to some artists work I liked. I'm not brave enough to make a Patreon myself and I'm scared of failure (nor I don't feel like to), I'll leave this up to you, but please be civil and respectful, okies? :)

Posted 11 years agoSorry guys! there won't be an update for "A Good recovery" for this week. (and possibly the next one, I don't know yet!)
Main reason is the colorist is extremely busy attending things in his house right now. Plus he's got pending arts to do since a while ago so he can't find the time to finish the pages right now!
Although the comic is still here, I don't have plans to cancel it since there's some pages left (is a short comic as I stated before)... some people have commented on the english discrepancies with this comic, and as I stated before english it's not our main language, I must confess that most of my english I studied it by myself. I'm self taught and it's easy to me to make mistakes... so if you see something you don't like, please comment on it! and please be specific! What kind of dialogue you disliked and how we can fix it? ...I'm seriously considering publishing my comics in spanish with a translation in the artists comments so it would be easy to fix it and maybe someone could do a better translation than I do! without having to re-post the image again and stuff... idk yet.

Main reason is the colorist is extremely busy attending things in his house right now. Plus he's got pending arts to do since a while ago so he can't find the time to finish the pages right now!
Although the comic is still here, I don't have plans to cancel it since there's some pages left (is a short comic as I stated before)... some people have commented on the english discrepancies with this comic, and as I stated before english it's not our main language, I must confess that most of my english I studied it by myself. I'm self taught and it's easy to me to make mistakes... so if you see something you don't like, please comment on it! and please be specific! What kind of dialogue you disliked and how we can fix it? The only thing I could ever develop about this dude is his obsession about his appearance, but customer can do wathever they want to with the character once it's theirs! caught a cold (UPDATE: infection)
Posted 11 years agoSo it resulted to be an respiratory infection and strong allergie attacks that I should take treatment immediately (wich I did, thank God), I still have pills to take and these are huge, so I gotta be careful not to gag. The treatment goes well for now but I still can't go out due that the infection can get worse. There are infections without fever and stuff and I didn't know that. But for now at least I can breath and I'm not coughing all the time. I'm thankful to my clinic doctor, he always knew everything.
So if you ever can't stop coughing, please call a doctor immediately.
I hope to be back soon once it gets cured.

Posted 11 years agoSorry if I haven't been around doing the stuff I owe... I feel sick since a couple of days ago. Strong stomachache with other stuff I won't comment here. Plus other things to do since my dad's absence (he's in a trip right now), I'll try to come back once I feel better.
In the meanwhile I was testing the new Manga Studio 5, it's awesome, I recommend to check it out. I've had a weird bug about not loading materials (except in admin's desktop) and I've spent most of the time trying to fix that. Well, kinda wasted the time because there's no way to fix such thing yet, but oh well..

As you can see I'm back with drawings and CGing thing, I'll re-open my comms again very soon (specially full commissions), but I don't want to put more work already, since I also have pending stuff on my DeviantART account since long ago. vov I'd hate to owe so many things!
I will be doing YCHs too in the future if anyone's interested! (those are collabs between me and steeltigerwolf, who does an excellent color job!).

Posted 11 years agoI'll re-open normal commissions very soon... I found easier ways to do backgrounds and to ink/paint too. I hope to deliver them faster in the future. ^^
They are right now on small hiatus. Since my glasses are broken (a spot in the middle of the glass doesn't let me see things well, it's also bad for the eyes to keep them for too long) and I won't be having my eyes attended until thursday. And it'll take time until I have them done and get used to them, my bet is that I'm gonna get dizzy from using them at first glance. XD;
That doesn't mean I wouldn't be doing simple pinups anymore. If you guys want something cheaper you can note/comment me about it anytime. ^^ I can reseve slots if you're still interested. Thanks for your attention!

And second... yes, I'm here, sort of... latest days we had a blackout that lasted like two days almost. Record of the weather in all the country (50°C of TS, I'm not kidding here) aaand the service of light that took forever on repair the centrals in order to have light again.
Latest days were a pain and I'm hoping to have blackouts again. I'm gonna try to be active as much as I can but if I disappear... well... you might know why. :P Remember that is summer right here and the services don't have much money to provide light when we need it the most, so, yep, blackouts for everyone! Except the ones in front of my house. Looks like a joke!

No overdetailed characters. No overdetailed text descriptions. No asking for changes more than three times. I have my reasons to do this and I hope you guys understand. English it's not my main language and I have always to ask for help (you know I don't always want to). I constantly get artistic blocked for these reasons. I want to deliver each commission to their clients without to have to wait too long. I want to ACCOMPLISH everyone! but also, I'm not an artist that spends their time detailing things, I know people who likes to do that but it's not my thing. Changes are OK but there is going to be a limit, so make sure to do a list of all the changes you want to before sending the note, okies? It'll make things easier too.

No overdetailed characters. No overdetailed text descriptions. No asking for changes more than three times. I have my reasons to do this and I hope you guys understand. English it's not my main language and I have always to ask for help (you know I don't always want to). I constantly get artistic blocked for these reasons. I want to deliver each commission to their clients without to have to wait too long. I want to ACCOMPLISH everyone! but also, I'm not an artist that spends their time detailing things, I know people who likes to do that but it's not my thing. Changes are OK but there is going to be a limit, so make sure to do a list of all the changes you want to before sending the note, okies? It'll make things easier too.
