plague continues and i'm older
Posted 10 years agoHi guys...
I'm still sick and not back to work yet but I AM improving finally. The dizzy spells have subsided and the fluid in my ears is considerably less that it was. The sinuses are still full of infection and draining away very slowly thanks to the medications. still coughing up quite a bit of green stuff which isn't fun, and sleeping for more than a few hours without having a coughing fit wake me up may not be happening for a while yet.
I went to see my Dr yesterday though and advised him of everything that's been happening as well as the treatment/surgical plan the ENT Dr has and he concurs that is the best treatment course for me. I've been trying out a couple of different OTC meds to help the coughing and all and so far the Mucinex fast max liquid seems to be the best. It's not cheap, but it works and if it helps me sleep that's even better.
My birthday was a few days ago and I really thank everyone who wished me well with texts, IM's and phone calls. Being sick made it not feasible to go out and celebrate, but there will be time for that later on. After all, I haven't gotten a paycheck now in a month so I really can't afford to go out anyway. I also noticed that FA took out or moved the optional box in the profile where you put your age so it still says 46 but I can't change it now.
In other news, I happened to see a commission of a fur who I hadn't seen here in about 5 years and after asking the artist to contact him for me, we've been catching up all day. Man it's really nice to know that he's OK and all since he was serving in Iraq when we last talked. He just seemed to drop off the face of the planet and I honestly thought the worst may have happened to him... I'm so glad he's OK and am looking forward to catching up with him.
Well that's all here so far..... have fun guys!

the great coon plauge
Posted 10 years agoYes i'm still feeling under the weather and no i'm not back to work just yet.
I went to see the specialist yesterday who performed a LOT of tests on me and determined that there is a severe narrowing of the sinuses which because of the cold I got, filled up and became blocked, which turned into a large infection. This blockage built up pressure and forced the infected mucus up into my ears since it had no where else to go.
He sprayed some heavy duty decongestant directly into my sinus cavity, which in minutes caused everything to open up and drain out, including the pressure in my ear. While relieving it is only temporary as the decongestant will only work for so long. So the next step is to get a cat scan of my sinuses and perform a procedure where a balloon is inserted into the sinus cavity and expanded to open the cavity up and allow for free drainage. Along with a series of medications to help clear everything out, I should be good to go again in just a couple of weeks. Once the ear drains out the dizziness should cease and I should be able to drive again.
I'm still not getting any $$ for my time off of work, but they did grant me a medical leave of absence so my benefits will remain active. I just hope I can hold out long enough to get back to work.

concrud to the extreme... Part two... the continuing saga
Posted 10 years agoI'm still pretty sick and unable to work or even drive very far.
My ear infection has gotten much worse and isn't going away with the antibiotics i've been taking making a third trip to the Dr essential today. Dr confirmed the swelling in my ear is getting worse and i'm going to have to see an EnT ASAP. Meantime we're going to try some more antibiotics to span the spectrum of viruses/bacterial infection, including steroids and ear drops.
Driving for more than a few minutes had become impossible since the motion will make be VERY dizzy and i'm not willing to take a chance of having an accident. Even bending down to pick something up is difficult since the pressure in my ear increases and give me a sudden rush of vertigo.
Paying bills is going be extremely hard this month so I have to see what i'm going to do.

fellow ham radio operators.....
Posted 10 years agoTom (W5KUB) is asking for a little help to keep his shows going.
Those who don't know Tom, he is an avid member of the ham community and really goes out of his way to help out fellow hams by hosting a webinar every Tuesday night at www.w5kub.com where he hosts interviews, educational programming for hams, and gives away a slew of prizes. Tom also travels to many hamfests (out of his own pocket mind you) where he broadcasts live from the dealer's floor, interviews people of interest in the ham community, and once again gives out a slew of prizes to watchers. However the donators of the prizes and sponsors of his show are asking if he can bring his viewer numbers up to maintain interest to the sponsors. No viewers mean no more show and that would be terrible for us all.
Please... if you can... spread the word that Tom needs viewers.... visit www.w5kub.com and check it out.

concrud to the extreme
Posted 10 years agoi've been sick since megaplex... thinking it was simply concrud... until I got worse.. and worse.. and finally couldn't function anymore... unable to breathe and head all swollen.. ears stopped up and eyes red and crusted shut. Finially got to the point this was no simple concrud.... went to the local doc in a box... determined I have a nasty virus festering in me. Gave me a slew of antibiotics and other meds to take and demanded bedrest for at least 4 days.
So no work for me... no time off left though so no work means no money for a whole week :(
This sucks!

Posted 10 years agoWell I got home today and promptly fell asleep... this was an amazing weekend and I had a lot of fun... even though it seemed like I didn't do much I got to see some awesome friends and spent a lot of time amongst my fellow furs... recharging my batteries.
Thanks so much to the staff and volunteers of megaplex for the awesome time and thanks to all the attendees for making it an amazing con with no drama!

all moved in and back online
Posted 10 years agoWell the move was pretty much uneventful. Had about ten furs show up to help out and boy was it needed!
I was all set to go by the time the truck arrived and we got started.... with all the bodies we had, it was pretty smooth, a couple of tetris experts in the truck to load and pack, some muscle to carry, and I wound up organizing the outgoing boxes, and getting the last minute things packed up.
The weather was warm but really humid so I made sure we had enough bottled water for everyone. I really didn't want to hurt anyone or have them get sick. about half way done we ran out of room in the truck.... i was surprised because the uhaul site said a 17 ft long truck was big enough for carrying up to 3 bedrooms. So I knew another trip was inevitable so we all headed out to the new home. Got the truck emptied in record time and as the last boxes were coming off the truck the rain started. It was a cool rain too and I think no one argued about it since most of them stayed outside longer than you normally would :)
I had to stay at the new place to wait for the cable installer so everyone else headed back to the old house to finish the move. I was really worried that folks would be running out of gas by now but a few made some stops along the way for quick noms and refreshments, while I stayed in the new place and tried to get things somewhat organized and set up. All in all we were all done by sunset and I took everyone out to dinner, where we relaxed and laughed and destressed. then we all headed home for sleep!!!! except my pillows were left at the old place so I headed back with Simba and found that a LOT of stuff was left behind, but a last detailed look thru the place and a few boxes later and the place was all cleaned out.. Trash dumped and headed home... got the bed assembled and I flopped out cold in no time.
A few days later and a LOT of unboxing and I STILL have a lot to go. Had to buy some things here and there to make up for the new fond roominess here and a few items that were needed for quick repairs of things. But i'm back online now, getting the office set up and boxes disassembled really quickly. My kitty spent the first couple of days pretty much hiding and all, but he's been exploring the house now and I thnk he likes the room because he keeps running at top speed all over... of course it's pretty funny watching him try and stop on the wood floor as he spins out and steers into the turn lol.
The new washer and dryer was delivered yesterday and I decided to wash some clothes last night.. well the wash was fine but the drying.... 4 cycles and still not dry... I was given the idea to check the dryer vent and lo and behold it's stopped up with a TON of old lint. The maintenance people are working on it now and going to replace the whole vent pipe with a new one. Always something huh?
So anyway, I may be a bit distant here for a while yet... I still have a lot of things that have to get done here and will be working onit a little each day.
Thanks again to everyone and i'll see ya all soon.
Theres still a lot to do here, but in time it'll become a nice cozy home again.. just in time to move again!
Thanks to all who came and helped me out... your help means the world to me and I hope I can repay you all someday.

moving... hope to be online soon.
Posted 10 years agoI'll be packing up the computer tonight for the moving truck tomorrow morning. Hope to get my internet up n running at the new place quickly.... wish me luck!
    let the spending begin
Posted 10 years agowho ever said that moving was cheap was full of shit....
I've had to plunk down a rather significant amount of money for the moving truck and supplies, changing addresses with everyone and trying to figure out what to throw / give away and what to keep. Looking at also spending money on furniture that I'll need in the new place to make it more comfortable, and I just ordered a new washer/dryer which I will need there too.
I know that i'm only renting this place, but it really feels like i'm buying it with the amount of money this is costing me. I still haven't even changed my address with my insurance company and really hope my rates won't skyrocket.
I still need to know who will be available to help me move on Saturday the 18th... please shout out so I know.

Posted 10 years agoupdate....computer and moving
Posted 10 years agoHi Guys... I'm sorry i've been so quiet recently... But as my last journal mentioned, the computer was acting up some... so heres the skinny on that..
I got the new MB and CPU and power supply installed... and it took the better part of a few days to get windows reinstalled and everything put back in exactly as it was before.. and even though I think I may still be missing a couple of things, it seems OK... well it WAS anyway..
The computer kept BSOD'g or locking up on me unexpectedly, making it very frustrating to do much of anything. Looking into the cause, it screamed of a RAM issue and since I simply moved t he RAM chips from the old MB over I looked into that and found out the RAM wasn't quite compatible with the new MB... great.. more expense.... ordered the proper RAM and got it in a couple of days... problem fixed!
So far the computer is very good with a lot of the old issues I was having eliminated as well... all in all it was a worthwhile investment.
I got the call today that I was approved to rent a new house up in Clermont so i'll be moving up there as soon as the place is finished. The house is currently being rehabbed and will be getting all new floors, cabinets, appliances and other repairs as needed and should be available in about 3 weeks. Once I get the exact date i'll let everyone know.
Next will be trying to get the actual physical moving done. U-haul or movers? can't really decide... another option is u-haul has a mover assistance thing where you hire bodies to move thru them. Never used this type of service before but that may be feasible. Dunno if it'll be over my budget though :(
Anyway thats all for now... stay tuned!

wow... just ... wow
Posted 10 years agoSo I had the power supply patched up at least temporarily so that I can at least get back online thanks to a local fur down here... who took the power supply apart, cleaned it and wedged a different fan into it to get it working, as well as gave me another power supply just in case I needed it. While the fan was about half the size of the original one it seemed to work. I plugged it in and kept my fingers crossed while the power came on but it worked. I left the system powered up while I went to work and came home to make sure it was still working properly. Everything seemed to be OK but I got a temperature alert from windows and immediately shut the PC down.
I wasn't sure what was wrong but I opened up the case and took the power supply out again... it smelled kinda funny so I decided to pull it apart and see if there was anything obviously wrong. It seems the wire to the new fan didn't have the same type of connector and it was just rigged to work and taped up... well I guess the heat got to the tape and it loosened up and the wire fell off, shutting the fan off. I don't know when this happened but it did and the temperature rose just enough to set off an alert. I'm very happy I was home to catch it.
I had another power supply that was given to me so I was ready to use it, but the connectors were not the same, however the fan was the same so I got the idea to swap out the fans. Took a little longer than I thought it would but I soldered the wires together properly so they won't come apart again. After all was said and done, the PC is working and should last until the new parts come in. I hope.
I prolly did a stupid thing, but since I had to order a new more reliable power supply, I looked up a new motherboard and CPU, which I really needed anyway, and found it to be in a package that was only a little bit more than I was already paying for the power supply by itself. So taking a gamble on it, and since a local furfriend here told me I could just pay him back later, I decided to go for it. Once the parts come in, i'll replace everything with all new parts and hope for the best, which may also mean I may have to reinstall windows but it'll be worth it.
Keep your fingers crossed guys!

Computer go boom
Posted 10 years agowell my faithful tower exploded last night as the canned air i was cleaning all the dust and cat hair monsters hit the power supply fan just right and caused it to shatter in a huge cloud of smoke and plastic. So im going to be pretty much offline until i can get a replacement.
This couldnt have come at a worse time since i have to move soon and every dollar is precious right now.

    Matthew ebel needs our help
Posted 10 years agoThis was sent out by Matt and he is asking for our help....
I need YOU to help me attack Pandora.
No, this isn't a call to play Borderlands with me... though we can certainly talk about that later. I'm talking about Pandora Radio. Apparently, they rejected the new album, High Orbit Saves The Pandas for no reason!
Why Did Pandora Reject The New Album?
I just told you… for no reason. Seriously, none. After putting SEVEN of my albums in rotation, the official line I've been given by two different staffers is "our policy is not to discuss specific reasons why we make each of these decisions."
I know from reading the enlistment announcements that a lot of my Robot Army members came from discovering me on Pandora, so I was crushed when I got this news. HOWEVER… one line in particular gave me great hope:
That said, suggestions from listeners and ongoing external research help guide our purchases. It's happened before that we've passed on an indie submission, and then ended up purchasing work by that artist later on.
This Is Where You Come In
Seriously, all I need you to do is send a brief email to Pandora telling them to add High Orbit Saves The Pandas to their catalog. There are about 2,000 members of the Robot army, over 11,000 followers on Twitter, and so on… All I need is for YOU to click this button and send them the suggestion right now!

…and if you want to go the extra light year, share this mission with your friends so we can get the new album on board. I count on Pandora's recommendation robot for a LOT of new ears that would never hear my music otherwise, so please help spread the word!

Posted 11 years agoDoes anyone have any ideas for artwork or designs for motorcycles... mainly the tank and fenders. I'm toying with ideas to customize my bike including pinstripes... chromed vinyl... or something unique but not terribly costly.
    motorcycle question
Posted 11 years agoDoes anyone have any experience with cleaning/restoring leather saddlebags? I've heard everything from saddle soap to shoe polish works but want a better idea from those that have experienced use of something.
    people never seem to learn
Posted 11 years agoI've been watching all this craziness in Ferguson MO over the last few days... I know people have a right to protest, and the police have been a little overzealous at times, but don't these protesters realize that they are protesting over a thug who robbed a store, assaulted a cop who tried to stop him, tried to steal his gun and then attack the cop again?
This is a 18 year old who was basically built like a linebacker against a hundred something pound cop. not exactly a fair fight.
But not only that, this kid just completely disrespected the law in the worst fashion possible and why? because he was black? because he felt he was entitled to take something from someone? because he felt like he was above the law?
Laws are there to protect everyone.. if you break the law, you have to be prepared to face the consequences... many people roll the dice and hope they just don't get caught.. eventually it bites em.
So the cop used deadly force to protect himself... well within his rights... yet people insist that he murdered this kid... which the autopsy reports even show he was killed by a bullet to the top of the head.. which means his was bent over in a running fashion.. just as the officer stated.
This story could have easily been a report on a police officer killed by a thug... I bet there would be no riots or protests or even anyone in the media or the community hogging time in front of all the cameras to say how sorry they were. There would even be those with the mentality that he deserved it by being in that community.
Is this what we have become? have we all just tossed the logic out the window and let emotion take over? Of course the police haven't released anything yet.. they are investigating the incident.. like they are supposed to. They shouldn't release any information until they have gathered all the information and decided what the proper course of action should be.
And another thing... does anyone even wonder how this police officer feels? He feared for his life... he took the life of another.. that's never something that a police officer looks forward to... does anyone think that this officer will ever be the same again? Especially with all these people berating his actions and calling him a murderer... if they could they would lynch him.. how does that make someone feel? not very good I'm sure. How much stress is he going through now.. not to mention he must be fearful of showing himself in public right now.. worried he'll be set on by angry people.. basically being a prisoner in his own home.
How would YOU feel?
I quit.......
Posted 11 years agoIt's been a long battle... good times... bad times... disasters... ending lives and new lives coming into the world... 25 years of EMS work and i've officially retired.
I have been certified since 1989 and spent many of my years in and around NYC... seeing more in my career than any ten people should ever have to see. I was at BOTH terrorist attacks at the world trade center... I lost many friends over the years.... and made many others.
Now I'm simply going to stay on the sidelines.. offer advice where I can.. and concentrate on my career in telecommunications... hopefully being able to advance myself into a long and fruitful career until I can retire to Florida... oh wait... where exactly DO retirees from Florida go to retire???

megaplex!!!!!!!!!
Posted 11 years agoWow.. just wow... that's it in a nutshell... I don't think i've ever been to a con and felt more relaxed. No staff responsibilities... no drama to get involved in.... nothing but being able to come n go as I pleased.... and the hot tub!!
I arrived somewhat late on friday because I overslept but I still arrived as the con was getting into full swing. Got together with my roommates and got to see some friends I haven't seen in a long time.
Between the usual... eating.. relaxing... hugging... it was great getting into the con and being able to just release some of my anxieties and frustrations and just RELAX ( did I mention the hot tub? )
HUGE thank you to the megaplex staff for putting on a great con!!!!
Sunday night I decided to leave earlier than I planned... mostly because I had planned on meeting up with some furs at disney on monday, and I was kinda worried about my kitty.... so I packed up... said goodbyes and headed home. Got home to a kitty tornado'd house and cleaned it up before heading to bed.
Today was spent at disney with
 kittybird and her mate... and
BucktownTiger and his mate... we spent the day at hollywood studios and saw as much as we could before
kittybird and her mate needed to head home.
BucktownTiger and his mate joined me for dinner at epcot where we met up with
 firr, got to see
cosmik play for a while.. and enjoyed one of the most wonderful and relaxing meals I can remember. This was followed by some fireworks, a relaxing boat ride back to hollywood studios and even more fireworks there. we eventually made our way up to fantasmic and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed bucktown's reactions to the show... it really is a great show and I highly recommend it.
We were able to tweet a lot of pictures and share some of what we were doing... but it was so much fun.
We finished the day off with a visit to the candy shop... where I swear the needed to mop up the drool coming from the tiger as he saw all the goodies they had. We all headed back to the parking lot and parted ways... thoroughly satisfied that we all had a fantastic time.

AC?... nope
Posted 11 years agoFor the first time in 10 years i'm not going to Anthrocon.... It's MY choice not to go because I have common sense.... If you remember I moved here almost a year ago, which financially i'm still recovering from... traveling to Pittsburgh is going to cost me a lot more since driving would simply be too costly and take too much time, so flying would be the way to go but finding an affordable flight is out of the question right now for me. The big reason i'm not going? I don't have any vacation time earned yet... since i'm in my first year, I will only earn a couple of days off every quarter until I pass my anniversary and then I would still need to wait for the new year to get my vacation earned. I'm not willing to risk taking time off without pay for a con.. it's just not feasible right now.
I hope everyone who goes has a great time and hopefully i'll be there next year... I WILL be at Megaplex however, since it's really only a 20 min drive to the con for me. So if you make it to AC then maybe you'll be at MP too.

life update... AC and other cons
Posted 11 years agoHi guys.......
I'm glad to say that i'm doing very well here, even though the temps have risen a lot sooner in the year than i'm used to, with temperatures getting into the 90's every day now, i've been trudging through my day with more than a few drops of sweat falling off me. I'm making sure to keep myself hydrated and staying conscious of how much and when i'm drinking something to ensure that I don't dehydrate. I've been steadily losing weight, but very very slowly. I'm currently at a milestone where i've fallen below 350 lbs and i'm very hopeful that it will continue to fall. I've been watching my portions and trying to be more mindful of the types of food I eat, and keeping a steady schedule of intake, keeping something in my stomach so I don't feel hungry and be more tempted to eat sweets or too much food.
I'm working a steady shift now and have gained the comfort levels I need to perform my job properly, and have even gained a lot of trust from my bosses and co-workers. This is a big deal to me because I see how this job is and am very hopeful it is something I will continue to do for a long time.
I've decided that AC this year is not going to happen since the flight alone will cut deeply into my budget, which is still recovering from the move here. I am going to be at megaplex however, and am looking forward to it. As much as I will miss everyone at AC, i'm hopeful that i'll see some furs at MP.
Anyway i'm going to get to bed shortly so have fun guys... and stay safe!
