I'm back in TX, have been for several days, though I'm having to do a lot of working. I'll get caught up with everything eventually, but for now I'm having trouble finding time or motivation to even deal with the basics, much less work on my photos and the people replying to me here. So, hi to those I met, sorry for not responding, and I'll maybe have pictures at some point XD

A week at Califur, a week in the general SoCal area, and next comes a week in northern New Mexico. I'll be back home (and checking / replyingto messages again) sometime around the 22nd.

This is what I get for never posting anything, stuff builds up to where there's too much for one journal, y'know?

I'm pretty much officially driving to Califur (20 hour drive, whee...) because I totally need a break from everything. Due to short notice (I wasn't even sure I was going until like, a day ago) I don't actually have roommates. I'll be there Thursday through Monday morning. But unlike past cons I've done on the super-cheap by basically leeching off friends who would have gone anyway (thanks big time Chaka and others heh ^_^) or the stuff like Oklacon where it's damn near free anyway, this time I have money. So I can actually offer to pay for my share of the floor or half of the bed. So if anyone still has some spare space, I might be interested (I'll just be winging it when I get there)

Likewise for winging it, I want to make more out of this trip than just Califur. It used to be this huge massive plan to visit some friends up in the Bay area after Califur. I was even gonna rent a really crappy motel for a few weeks. Sadly, plans disintegrated on me, however they -had- to wait till the last minute to do so. Sigh. SO. What I'm also looking for, and will be searching around for at the convention, is someone to spend 3-4 days with (or something like that) after the con. Plans include hanging out with the local furs, gaming, and visiting the parks and wooded areas nearby.

Speaking of parks and such, I've recently been obsessed with walking. In one week I probably walked around 40 miles. It feels good to be out and about. I really like wooded trails, especially creekside ones - though ones with cliffs mixed in are pretty cool too. I also got a camera recently from Woot, I was gonna use it for all of my trips and it was a really good deal. I LOVE the thing. Been using it a lot in only the few days I've had it. Around 100 pictures on each walk I took.

Edit: Looks like it's already sold out. The ironic thing here is that I don't stalk woot.com, or rather, I didn't, until that very update. I remembered about woot just last night. *laughs*

I've decided to say a bit of what I think of the movie. I've seen it probably the equivalent of over 40 times. Probably 12-15 straight through. Most times I typically watch something or play a game is around 2, generally just 1. I can't stand watching something multiple times. But Roadside Romeo is a bit different.

I will grant that the characters themselves aren't super likable, as I'm not particularly drawn to any of them, but their defined personalities all have reasonings behind them. Their negative traits have visible roots as well as their evolutionary traits.

Laila is cold hearted overall because she has been kept isolated for lengthy amounts of time due to Charlie Anna. Romeo's making her rethink her isolation.

Romeo is selfish and clueless on many things, but learns to think on his feet, and at the end realizes that just being selfish will never get him anywhere.

Charlie Anna learns that just being a big punk dog really isn't going to get him anywhere, either. He's always had to take an aggressive approach, but has, for a while, known that something needs to change. When Romeo finally saves him, he understands that just chasing Laila with the ways he has been isn't going to do anything. The encounter with the fake her was part of what started to open his eyes.

Chhainu is a punching bag. He has a perpetual black eye and is hit in it around 4 times just during the movie. He's disgusting, unclean, and can barely be understood. He's also incredibly stupid. As much as I hated dealing with this character in terms of resubbing, he was fairly consistent in personality.

The Angels are bodyguards. As such, their movement is restricted on most standard times. This is first evident during introductions. After they spring onto the scene, they hold their pose, despite evidence that it's not very comfortable (Polyester is twitching her arm some.) However, they also appear in some of the dance scenes. They seem to want to dance, but never do anything beyond waving their hands around or nodding in tune. This is because they're not allowed to do anything more, and not for lack of animation ability. It's clear they could do more with them from the chase scenes, but they don't, due to that one core detail about them. I personally like this fact, because they manage to express their desire to be doing more, to be involved, but due to their job, they can't.

The songs in the movie generally do a lot to set the feel of the scenes, of the characters, as well as to move the story along. Often times a lot of subtle character development happens. I got to have a lot of fun with the lyrics for some of the songs. I didn't have much to go on, and I wanted to get the later ones to the point where if you read them at the same pace as the Indian lyrics, it would go at the same pace, or very close to it. I didn't do this with the first or second songs, more than on a few lines, but I did it on the rest. Really, the song lyrics are quite expressive, and fit well with the story.

In addition, there are small background things to notice that also will set the mood for certain scenes. For example, after the So Right insert song when Romeo is taking Laila back to the Moonlight Club, he tries again to be overly romantic. He brings her paw to his muzzle and tries to kiss it, but she playfully yanks it away and bats at him. Following that, the scene begins with Romeo in a hesitant mood, and he was unsure if it had really gone as well as he thought it did. Laila is just messing with his head though and being playful and a bit dominating, and with a few more teasing lines, offers him what he really wants, though at a later date. Another such thing to notice is Romeo's expressions after he first weasels his way out of Anna's clutches during their first encounter. He's behind Anna and does a "Yes! It worked!" pose, before being interrupted with the warning. It helps to clue us into the fact that he's bluffing. Heck, when Anna says something about Laila being his girlfriend, Romeo just shakes his head, totally saying "Yeah right, dude." There's more of these little things scattered throughout the film.

Laila's playful and mildly controlling behavior makes another appearance on the rooftop later in the movie, where she makes several moves that almost cause Romeo to fall off the building. She's definitely amused by this, but then finally tugs him close for a nice kiss. She's admittedly being a bit cruel, but at the same time, she's trying to put Romeo in his place at least a little. To make it where Romeo isn't -quite- so full of himself.

After this scene, though, if Romeo hadn't been thrown into a totally submissive and unsure mood, he might have been able to say right then and there what he'd had to go through with Charlie Anna. However he was completely stunned, especially with the slap, from the turn of events. Plus, with Chhainu there, it's unlikely that things would have made much progress.

Oh and the references. Oh the references. There's plenty in the film. Around 4 or 5 are from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayeng, one of Yash Raj's biggest films. There are two or more quotes from it, a point where the movie's main song theme is used, and then the ending train scene (which explains why Romeo doesn't just get off the train.) That movie aside, Interval is not just imitating actors, but also quoting their more famous lines. I pulled the ones I could, but with nouns changed around, and me knowing only a few phonetic syllables of Hindi, I couldn't find the rest.

And then, there's the humorous stuff in the background. Hair Straightening, Tail Straightening, Paws Manicure, to quote part of one sign. Haircut (Male), Haircut (Non-Male), Puppies Hair Cut, from another. And good old English Speeking Corse, very effektive. ;3 Amusing stuff to notice in the background, really. Oh, and the scenes they have are pretty nice and deep. Lots of stuff in the 'cages' they create.

But yes, I loved this movie. Not too much for the characters themselves, aside from being a very nice representation of heavy anthropormorphics, but for the smaller details of the film, and the general consistancy throughout.

Now a bit of story. A local fur shared this film's existence with me, and suggested I show it at an upcoming party. I immediately was questioning whether I'd seen it before. It didn't sound familiar, but there -was- something at Furry Fiesta that I caught a glimpse of on Sunday that I had no clue what it was. I told him, sure, bring the DVD to the meet and I'll take a look at it.

I get it, and am immediately impressed by the level of anthro-ness involved in the film. It has a nice balance between showing them as humanlike, while still having enough there to have the fact that they're dogs be a part of the plot. And the fur, omg the fur. It reminds me sooooo much of Starfox Adventures in that regard.

Anyway, it's an Indian CG romance movie. Typical Bollywood style with a bit of a more comedic approach. Lots of small details mixed in, as well. I'd say, given everything involved, and what they managed to do at times vs times when it seems like something's off, I have to say that everything in the movie had a point. And with that, I have to say that this movie is a must see.

Now, what is the difference between what I linked and what I got from my friend? What is this fansubbing I'm talking about? Well, you see, I went to watch the movie, and immediately wanted to gouge my eyes out. Not because of the animation or the voice acting or anything like that. It was because of the subs. I'm a VERY avid anime fan. I watch all the latest stuff as it becomes fansubbed. My definition of quality subs is properly timed, flowing sentences. My definition of enjoyable subs is when everything is subbed. What I find to be fantastic subs is when the songs have karaoke segments, and references have footnotes.

This film lacked all of the above.

I can't speak Hindi, though at this point, I definitely know a small number of words. The subs that existed weren't entirely horrible. Most of the basic nouns seemed in place. And the characters will often speak partially in English, which was a big help.

So, d/l this movie if you like furry animation at all, and can stand a little song and dance mixed in with your plot. You won't be disappointed. :D


Oh and sorry for no Furry Fiesta part 2. I couldn't get around to it while it was fresh. Mostly it was Apples to Apples, helping Rikkanis with Skittles, and then an MTG draft tourney on Sunday. But overall it was a blast!

Heads up, apologies for anything that's factually incorrect or out of order. It was one hell of a busy and fun convention and there was just too much awesomeness to remember all of it perfectly.


Wednesday
Yeah, the con hasn't even come close to starting yet. Drove up from Austin today in order to be there all day on Thursday, and to visit my dad for a little bit. It was surprisingly less stressful than it has been in the past. We got the car fixed up a little, which was definitely needed. Took a sleeping pill at like, 11 PM (I had been sleeping at 4 PM or something) and it pretty much knocked me out for two hours, then stopped actually working. :| So I just laid in bed until the next morning.

Thursday
Got up around 7 or so. Packed up and then my dad worked on my car for a little bit. Small maintenance. Drove out to the con at around 9, getting there before 10. There were two other guys there, one was messing around on his laptop, the other just sitting there being bored. I say hi, and then decide I don't wanna just sit still, so I go back out to my car and grab my "emergency supplies". I drag them inside and set them up.

I brought my computer monitor and my hacked Wii console, loaded with SMW rom hacks. It used to be able to play burned games but it turns out, something bugged out and now it won't. >.< So anyway, we started to play Brawl some because they were interested in practicing and another person shows up. Hi2U  Mystee :3 She joins in for a bit and then everyone finally gains access to checking in to their rooms. Dispersal happens, and I go wandering around a little bit. I put the stuff back up and just try to kill some time while more people get there.

I walked over to the McDonald's with another guy there, I forget his name. Took a fair while but was fun, and the weather was fairly nice still.

I got back at around 1 or so, and started to look for a multi-tap so that I could set up the Wii again. I went into the internet room the con was having set up, and spent around 45 minutes helping out, before reaching a bit of a stopping point and borrowing a power strip. I go back to the lobby/bar area and work on getting things set up again. Noone's down there at the time but I figure hey, nerd it up and the people will gradually come.

And well... that's pretty much what happened :D Remember those Super Mario World Hacks I talked about? Here's where those come into play. I started out trying to finish up Brutal Mario. I had gotten most of the way through it prior, but ended up getting stuck. But the stages are really freaking cool. Lots of custom player-made content and bosses. Something unusual. Best thing to draw a crowd. Mystee and the guys from before are the first to show back up down there. I work my way through the game as people ask me what the heck it is and it starts to get really late. I think it ended up being 2PM till 6PM that I played Brutal Mario. FINALLY I managed to reach the end. Crazy boss fights, and lots of savestates. By the end of it, I probably had 10 to 15 people gathering around watching on and off. The con was really starting to feel like a con.

Things don't stop there, though. A few people had asked if I had Kaizo Mario. Which is an incredibly hard Mario hack, and one of the most famous of them. I told them no, but I had World of Illusion, which is similar but relies more on custom blocks than just sheer annoyance to make it difficult. I boot it up, and pass the controller off to one of the watchers. He spends about 10 minutes on the first level before losing all of his lives. I tell him to keep passing it around, and go walk off to see who else has shown up. I run into  OceanOtter and  Pan-Pan and then proceed to drag Otter over to the console and talk him into playing it. He had about as much luck as everyone else, but he was a good sport. Okay, so, I'd seen World of Illusion played before the con. I knew how to get to an Automatic Mario level, and I atleast had wanted to share that much. To get to one, you reach the special exit of (I thought) the first stage. I confiscate the controller and end up getting a game over. I try one more time because I know I can manage it and do. People are all ":O WTF" about this rom, because it's just... weird, and ridiculous. So, turns out that wasn't the exit I was looking for. FINE THEN!!! So I sit down and proceed to clear the first level telling a little bit more about the rom and the features it has. At this point there's probably a good 20 people in the area, most of them cheering me on. I make it to the second stage and prior to tonight, I had never managed to clear this stage. And to get the secret exit, you have to get all of those Yoshi Coins. Right, so, fine. Let's do that...

Yeah... I manage it. No freaking clue how, but it was awesome. Got to the Auto stage and people loved it. But the crowd still was entertained by the weird mechanics of this rom, so I decided to keep on going. And going. And going. I did a power clear via special exits, reaching the Castle of Illusion in around 2-3 hours. Thanks to everyone for cheering me on, it was hellafun to beat this thing.

Anyway, after that, folks started to disperse some. I cleared the other stages of the rom with people filtering in and out. After that, I started a WiiWare game called Pop and tried to drag Mystee over to play it with me. It couldn't really grab the same crowd though so instead I pulled out Monty Python Fluxx and played it with her and a couple of other people.

Eventually, we got kicked out of the bar area, and had to move upstairs by the event rooms. I pulled out Zombie Fluxx and we played with around 8 people. Really fun stuff. But it ended up being really late, and since I had been having so much fun hanging out with Mystee, I asked if she had any extra space in her room for tonight. Well, see, my planned roommates weren't going to be there till Friday night. So my options were drive back to my Dad's and spend the night there (uncomfortable) or crash with one of my new friends. Thanks again Mystee for sharing your extra space.

Friday
The con begineth...

I woke up and got ready for the day, then killed time till the dealer's room opened up. Once it did, I went in and looked around. Said hi to a few friends I knew were going to be in there, and bought an amazingly nice shirt by  MicheleLight that would be soooo bad to wear to a job. It's a bit too... spicy. :3 While in there, my roommates found me and we killed a bit more time till we could check in at around Noon. Loaded up the room and hung out some, but they seemed to be in a rather icky mood overall. Still not sure what was up with that. They had a local non-fur friend show up as well. He stayed for a day of the con. More on that later.

Next, I met up with Mystee again and her,  StokerBramwell, and I went over to Wendy's. To be honest, it's the first time I've eaten there, and I think their stuff's pretty darn good. Probably a bit better customer service than McDonald's usually gives, too.

After I got back, I started to try and create a mean Fluxx deck that mixed MPFluxx, ZombieFluxx, and a few cards from base set, to create this complete mind-screw deck that pretty much required me to play dealer due to the large amount of confusing and intertwined rules involved. (Yes, I really like games. :P Shush!) The thing caused some really hellacious rounds but was such a massive overkill that few played more than one game. Thanks to those who actually put up with the deck and had fun.

*Thinks* Let's see, what else... Probably something else mixed in, here, but eventually the Brawl Tournament started, and I ended up placing 4th in their weird format. TBH, the FFA bottom-out thing was pretty fun for the early rounds. But I think some 1v1's for the last like, 8 or whatnot, would have been better. I'm not very good at Brawl, but it's still fun.

As I said, Friday wasn't the best of the days there. My planned roommates ended up being really grouchy, and Rikkanis ended up sleeping in there, too, so I pretty much said screw it, I'll crash with my local friend, Chaka. There was a bit of a party going on in there, but I brought earplugs and still had another sleeping pill left, so after hanging out there a bit, I fell asleep pretty easilly using those.
