Fixed.Connecting with peopleagain.Movie reviews for practice
General | Posted 9 years agoFinally managed to fix my computer, so I hope to connect with people again. (Time, life and work permitting) One thing I've been fortunate to do is see movies again (I've seriously seen more in the last three months than the last three or so years) So I thought I'd review a few of them here to get back into the swing of writing.
So, in order of release:
Rogue One: Probably don't need to talk about this too much, most have probably already seen it or at least about the plot from others. I will say I felt the first few minutes felt a little wonky, especially introducing planet after planet in quick succession, but it quickly settles down and the plot gets going. But seriously, the final third of the film is worth the price of admission alone. Since the prequels I've been wanting a good Star Wars battle scene that lived up to the excitement and thrill of the original trilogy and boy does this deliver. Not to mention Darth Vader's crowning moment of badass villainy (yes, this is the villain we expect when we think 'Darth Vader') I think if they had just managed to make the first half of the film more captivating and the two main characters as interesting as the rest of the Rogue One team, I would bump it up from a Great movie to Fantastic.
Assassin's Creed: Ah, another movie based on a video game. Maybe this will be the one to break the unfortunate trend of bad video game to movies and we'll have a surprise hit on our hands. ...Nope! Next film. While the movie follows the idea of the game well enough and has a plot similar to the first game (templars kidnap the descendants of assassins who lived hundreds of years ago and put them in a machine that allows them to relive their ancestors life by reading the code in their dna so they can find a macguffin called the Apple of Eden which has the genetic code for free will which they plan to use to subjugate the human race. Just go with it) It unfortunately suffers from, well... being too much like a video game. A good cast, including Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons all do just fine. Special effects range from very good to painfully obvious cg. Funny enough, the flow of the movie is like watching someone play the game, which, while fitting for a movie based on video game, gets a little tiresome after awhile. The way it goes from he talking and exposition scenes to the action scenes is like going from gameplay segments to cutscenes in games. Also, many times when the main character enters or exits the Animus (the device that allows him to experience his ancestors memories) we a get a long flyby shot of an eagle or hawk flying overhead. It got to the point that I began thinking 'Oh, we've made it to the save point' when it showed up. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is the finale. The assassins sneak in on a top secret templar meeting, they don their assassins outfits, they pull out their weapons they had hidden on their persons, they scout the room and the locations of armed guards and... they simply walk up to the person they're after, kill him, take the item they're after, and leave. The End! Seriously, for such buildup and after we've been treated to good fight sequences throughout the film I can't help but feel they left the final fight sequence on the cutting room floor. Not a terrible movie though, some really fantastic and fun parkour action scenes and changes from the game that actually make more sense (in the game the character simply lies in a machine and experiences memories, but apparently that's enough for him to gain all the knowledge and moves of an assassin. In the movie the character literally moves and physically performs all the actions his assassin ancestor does which makes a lot more sense to me that he's able to perform them outside of the Animus) Not a terrible movie, I would say its worth at least a rental. bring the popcorn and enjoy some good, fun actions sequences.
Passengers: Wow. Ever see a film that's well made, looks great, has good actors, but is miscast, boring, and just made... wrong? Welcome to Passengers. One of the passengers of a 130 year trip aboard a spaceship to settle a new inhabitable planet is awakened mid deep sleep, 80 years before he's suppose to when the ship is set to arrive at the new planet. So now he's alone and quickly realizes he won't be able to get back to sleep and is all alone with the robots on the ship, including a robot bartender (probably the most interesting character in the movie). But hey, that's a pretty girl sleeping in that pod over there... if only she would wake up too... So he secretly wakes her up to stuck with him for the next 80 years so he won't be alone. But what happens when she finds out? Honestly, this plot sounds like an intriguing psychological horror, so what did they make the movie as? A romantic drama set in outer space. Ugh. Unbearably predictable, everything in the plot is blatantly broadcast to you long before it happens, and filled with unfortunate implications that are just glossed over (him waking her up and trapping her with him gets little more than a 'Yeah, that sucks for you', to the implication that they had children while trapped together but who did their kids...) I understand at one point the film was going to actually be made as a psychological horror film with Keanu Reeves and Rachel Mcadams starring in it which makes me wonder what could have been with this film. Some absolutely beautiful shots, great looking design for the spaceship, and some good looking scenes (the zero gravity swimming pool scenes looked especially good) it's a shame this didn't turn out better.
Underworld: Blood Wars: Sometimes I'm glad I don't have to pay to see a movie, or at least have my time seeing these films compensated. The fifth movie in the underworld series about werewolves (I guess, they look more like demons to me) and vampires fighting has both factions looking for the heroine Selene so they can use her to track her daughter, a hybrid of werewolf and vampire whose blood apparently will grant whoever finds her the power to win the war. While the actions scenes are fun, everything else is just people talking in exposition which has little to do with what happens in the film. No characterization for anyone and lacking some much needed humor, all I can say is that if you've seen one of the movies in this series, you've seen them all. It's exactly what it looks like in the commercials. Still, the Mortal Kombat like spine rip fatality she does to the bad guys is pretty cool.
Best "WTF" moment: Selene enters the dungeon of an old castle to find a bunch of people wrapped in some sort of white cocoons so they can be 'reborn'.
Bye Bye Man: Wow... wow wow wow, just... wow. Want to see what happens when someone writes their own fanfiction of Slenderman and Smiledog? How did this even make it to theaters? I was basically paid to go see this film and it still felt like a waste. This would be perfect for an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 or Rifftrax. 3 college students (who, as far as characterization goes, are jock 1, jock2 and girl) move into an old house where one of them finds the words 'Bye Bye Man' carved into an old nightstand. He asks the others and their friend (girl 2) if they've ever heard that before and what it means. Suddenly they begin hallucinating all sorts of strange things and start lashing out at each other over what they think they see them doing. Soon they find out the Bye Bye Man is causing the hallucinations. Why? Because they know his name. That's it. Why does he do this? Apparently to make people kill each other so his dog can munch on their faces. I guess? Apparently a reporter back in the 60's covered a murder committed by a teen who only said to him (and no one else apparently) 'the bye bye man said to do it'. Well, said reporter begins researching the name and soon begins hallucinating. He ends up killing everyone he told about the Bye Bye Man and anyone they told so that the name can't spread to others and to stop the Bye Bye Man, because saying it or thinking it apparently triggers him. So where did the name come from in the dresser? The reporter carved it into the dresser before going to kill everyone to stop Bye Bye Man. BRILLIANT! One of the most glaring omissions in the movie is the absence of any kind mythology for the Bye Bye Man himself. Who/what is The Bye Bye Man? Why does he target anyone who says or even thinks his name? What’s the deal with the coins and the train? And what the hell is that horrible cgi dog-like creature he walks around with? Non of this is ever brought up or even asked. (seriously, the cgi on the dog creature gives Birdemic a run for its money) Absolutely no characterization, cliched story, badly edited, its amazing this wasn't straight to video or basic cable. What dirt they had on Doug Jones and Carrie-Anne Moss to appear in this dreck is beyond me. See it if you enjoy bad movies ala MST3K.
Best 'WTF' moment: A dream sequence follows a train traveling along a foggy railroad track, only to come upon the naked backsides of three people standing in front of it.
Split: Please, PLEASE, tell me this is another sign that Shyamalan is back to making good movies. Three girls are kidnapped by a random gentleman who chloroforms them and steals their car. They wake up locked in a strange underground room and soon find out their captor suffers from multiple personalities who tells them they're needed for when The Beast appears. A taut little psychological horror, it really pulls you in and keeps you guessing. What really sells the film is the great performance by the lead actor who manages to make each personality believable, even when one personality is pretending to be another. If I had to compare it to something, I would say Split is this years 10 Cloverfield Lane (which I also highly recommend if you haven't seen it). Highly recommended. Also really like the implication of what the sequel could be!
Best 'Woah!' moments: One personality quickly surfaces over another in a very sinister way. The arrival of the Beast. The Twist!
John Wick Chapter 2: Someone Please! Get this man a gun! And another sequel! The hitman who once killed three men in a bar with a pencil is back. Picking up a few days after the end of the first movie, John, the ex-assassin who went on a rampage on the Russian mob when the mob boss son stole his car, but even worse, killed his dog, John's still adjusting to life without his wife while bonding with his new dog. And finding his car. Unfortunately an Italian crime lord forces him back into the game again with a blood oath since John dipped back in to get his revenge. Of course, crime lords aren't to be trusted. With a body count that must be around 130, this movie has Fantastic action sequences, is beautifully choreographed, great characters and an interesting world of assassins, don't miss this if you love action movies.
Best Moments: Anytime John Wick pulls out a gun. Getting to actually see John Wick take out several people with a pencil in all its gory detail.
Best Quotes: "You wanted me back! I'm back!"
"Tying up loose ends?" (In sign language) "Just... one." (1 indicated by the middle finger)

I swear my body emits some kind of life ruining radiation
General | Posted 9 years agoIn the past week and a half my phone quit working and broke, the car my brother let me use now refuses to start, and now my computer has broken and won't start. Good news is I got a good replacement phone for cheap, and it looks like my computer just needs a replacement power supply (which is relatively cheap, but will be a pain to install), which just leaves the car as a problem. I swear the universe doesn't want me to succeed at getting a job or anything else.

Crying tears of Joy
General | Posted 9 years agoSomehow, at this incredibly late eleventh hour, I was able to find a home for my cat before I move! She didn't even panic and try to run away when they came, which she usually does with everyone! She even got along with their dog! I'm so happy I can't even describe it! I know she'll be shy and nervous to begin with, but the couple was so awesome and she took right to them! This makes moving infinitely better!

Extremly bad news piling up, Really trying to maintain...
General | Posted 9 years agoIn addition to having to move to a new place far away from where I live, a place I've lived for so long and love, I've just been hit with some extremely bad news.
First is I won't be able to keep my wonderful cat. I hope to find a good home for her before I have to leave.
Then I got hit with a huge curveball just today. My Dad, my awesome, wonderful dad, was diagnosed with mid-stage Alzheimer's.
If anyone's tried contacting me the last few hours, I apologize, I've been trying to deal with all these developments. I hope to be back to normal by tonight.
In the meantime I'm trying to remain strong. But I probably look like this right now: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net.....20150204025951
This time of year is usually so happy for our family, with birthday and Thanksgiving, but this year... I just don't know

To my Dad on Veterans Day
General | Posted 9 years agoHe was born during the great depression, grew up in the uncertainty of World War II, had two brothers serve in that war, sold newspapers headlining the attack on Pearl Harbor, flew B52's over Vietnam, even loosing radar when doing so once, missed a midair collision by inches, but witnessed one just off his wing which killed a bunch of friends and people he knew, lived through the cold war, experienced the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK Jr. and was on alert during the Cuban missile crisis. After leaving the Air Force, he flew commercially and took care of my sick Mom during their 45 year marriage until she could no longer fight and passed away, as well as raising six children.
I love you dad. Thank you so much for your service, your wisdom, your love.
(and in case anyone's wondering, Yes, I came along very late :)

Paint It, Black (I already love this show!)
General | Posted 9 years agoA friend of mine stopped by after I was done packing for the day and was kind enough to drop off the first six episodes of the new series WestWorld. I can honestly say I was hooked from the opening episode and am in love. It's created by Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher Nolan) and his wife Lisa Joy and produced by J.J. Abrams. Beautifully filmed, terrific acting, great music, intriguing story and characters; I really hope this makes it through the first five seasons they already have planned for it.
I can't stop listening to the soundtrack, especially this fantastic piece 'Paint It, Black' (an orchestral version of the Rolling Stones song), especially when it REALLY picks up around the 1:30 mark. Have a listen and do yourselves a favor and try and see and support this new show!

Think I just saw the best Batman movie this year...

Kinda funny (or is that sad?) to think that in a year with four features with Batman in them (Batman v. Superman, The Killing Joke, Suicide Squad) the best is this love letter to the 60's Batman. Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar all reprise their roles from the original series and are in top form. What really made it so enjoyable and kept me laughing throughout were the lines and their delivery which are fantastic. Hearing Robin call Catwoman 'You bedazzled Bathsheba!' and 'Hussy!' and considers given her a grope at another point. Adam Wests Batman becoming serious and evil (I guess that would mean he turns into the movie versions of Batman) and straight up wants to kill the villains! Puts on brass knuckles! Delivers lines like 'You want to get nuts! Lets get nuts!' and 'This isn't a space station, its an operating table! And I'm the surgeon!' as he beats the crap out of them and the words on the screen go from things like 'socko!' 'Bash! and 'Whomp!' and become 'Fracture!', 'Pulverize!' and 'Gore!' had me laughing like crazy. In all honesty, the 60's Batman is my least favorite, but this is such a well written, well acted homage to the old series, while also taking into account all other things Batman (movies, cartoons, comics, etc.) that its impossible not to have a good time. If you're any kind of Batman fan I highly recommend checking this out.

Getting better. And an explanation
General | Posted 9 years agoUgh, what a long couple of days. Not to mention weeks.
Firstly I want to thank everyone who sent their regards, here and elsewhere it really means a lot and I can't thank you enough.
Anyway, the first major problem I ran into was when I was let go from my job. A job I had finally got after 8 months of searching and I truly thought things were taking a turn for the better. Then the first week of September I got sick and missed about four days of work. I don't have access to a phone, so to make sure my work knew what was going on with me, I sent my supervisor and hr emails and email-to-texts to cover myself. I returned the next week and everything proceeded as normal. Then out of nowhere I get called in on my day off of work, asked to stop by as soon as I could. I immediately headed down since I believed it was about a correction to my latest paycheck. I arrived only to find out I was let go due to my absence that first week of September. I was speechless. I asked about the messages I sent, that they confirmed they received. They verified again that they had received them and even the center director confirmed she knew. But the higher ups of the company apparently decided that, even though everyone confirmed they got my messages, knew that I didn't have a working phone, and knew that I was out sick, since there wasn't an actual phone call it counted as a no call, no show, and since there were more than three of those days in a row it counted as job abandonment weeks after the fact.
Needless to say, I was a wreck. I went home and face planted on my bed. I ended up falling asleep and woke at 4 in the morning, about 12 hours later. I wanted to sleep some more, but couldn't. I got up and just walked, walked for about 7 hours. I ended up passing some old neighborhoods and even visiting the graves of my mother and childhood friend. I didn't realize it, but family had been out looking for me and were worried when I wasn't home and they couldn't find me.
This led to the medical episode I suffered from. I received a new medication to help with my depression, but got the wrong dosage. From what I can tell, the pharmacy mixed up the amount I take for the new medication with the old medication I was taking. Anyway, first sign something was wrong was when I was found sleepwalking, something I've never done before, but was thought to be a minor side effect, switching from one med to the other. But then Saturday night it just exploded. It's hard to describe everything that happened, but it felt like the two halves of my brain were trying to rip themselves apart from each other, and I experienced some bad seizures and blackouts.
Fortunately things feel like they're almost back to normal. I've honestly been asleep most of the last few days, and have had a massive headache when I'm awake, but its not as bad and I'm not too depressed anymore. I hope it will only be another day or so before the headaches go away and I feel normal again.
Anyway, hope everyone's doing well. And thank you again for all the support.

RAAAAAAAAIIIIII!!!!! FML right now!
General | Posted 9 years agoSeriously, between a ridiculous job loss, confused wondering, complete mental breakdown, and now a severe medical episode I am not doing well at all right now!!
I've tried to put up a strong front, tried to behave normal, tried to get back on track, but I just can't do it at the moment. And now I've woken in the middle of the night to a bare bed and a freezing room because I passed out and the window's open and its like 50 degrees in here! I'm in no shape or mood to fix the bed right now, so I'm just going to grabbing my sleeping back and tiger blanket and wrapping myself in them.
Sorry to vent, but I needed to do or write something before I pass out from this medical episode again. I'll give more info when I feel bbetter i fanyone eants to know more

General | Posted 9 years agoI'm convinced Pokemon Go! creators are having a grand time
General | Posted 10 years agoThis may all be coincidence, but there are so many funny things I've found while playing Pokemon Go!
that I'm not so sure.
So a lot of pokemon I've found have been pretty funny in relation to where they are. Some make
sense. Caterpie, Pidgey, Ponyta, Eevee Venonat all found at a local park, but then there are some
that make you wonder.
I found one of my favorites, a Growlithe, at a barbecue restaurant across the street, the Arby's,
Subway and Walmart nearby had tons of Rattata and Raticate, Exeggcute was at a grocery store,
and a male and female Nidoran together in a grove of trees.
Not only that, the pokestops seem to be having fun too. One was a pub nearby that dropped a
bunch of potions for me. Two others I found were a church and a graveyard, both of which
dropped a bunch of Revives.
Could all be coincidence, but I think someone's having a lot of fun.
that I'm not so sure.

General | Posted 10 years agoI just happened across this. How pathetic can you get?

News flash sjw's, not everything is about you.You should try learning and being intelligent so you can quit embarrassing yourselves.
Reminds me of this from Super Paper Mario. Sadly it's becoming more and more relevant by the second.
