Shinies Tipping System?
Posted 6 years agook, I'm game. This doesn't sound too different then the tipping system that DeviantArt has in place.
No idea if it is enabled or where the button/tip jar is but in theory I have mine setup.
So if you would like to support my creations and cant afford anything I currently have for sale, but want to help out and help me get better supplies that I would otherwise normally not be able to get like better gems or silver chains/hardware then toss on over a couple Shinies!
Apparently the tip jar is between the "favorites" box and the "watched by" box, or so I'm told. Apparently I wont be able to see it at all unless someone gives me a Shiny and leaves a note.

Etsy sale + custom orders are open!
Posted 6 years agoI've told myself I wou'd never do this but between increased bills and other various things draining my money, if I pay all my bills I'll have a grand total of $40 until next payday, the 19th. so Etsy sale! or more accurately free shipping which could be interesting since a few things are cheaper then what shipping would cost....

finally did it
Posted 6 years agoI finally placed a commission to get a reference sheet made up for Tic-Toc
This is something I should have done a WHILE ago.
Tic-Toc will finally see life, other then my poor attempt at a suit of course lol
The artist? well, to be perfectly honest, I don't know if they have been around FA before but they certainly made an impression today to the people that watch the main page. they posted 159 submissions in the course of a couple hours lol and the quality of their work? damn!
Who is it?
LightGem
Go check their stuff out, you won't be dissapointed in the least!
I was excited a couple years ago when I finally got a ref sheet done for my first character, Fhang https://www.furaffinity.net/view/16677836/
but I knew he would only ever be a character, an idea that could be thrown into different scenarios without a care because thats all he ever was, an idea.
But I am ecstatic to finally be getting Tic-Toc fleshed out, he isn't an idea, Tic-Toc is ME! but with fur, and long ears, and pocket watch eyes...........

re submitting
Posted 6 years agoafter much thought about it, and a nice discussion over on Deviantart with a fellow crafter, even though i had been thinking about it anyway, I revamped my photo booth. No longer is it a mass cluster of random grain patterns, it looked really neat, but since I am working primarily with wood it was a major headache trying to get my pieces to stand out, the background was being super counterproductive.
so what did I do? first I painted it in what was supposed to be a metallic paint, it looked like sh*t
then I lined it with the remainder of my peel and stick velvet, that was a total waste because it wouldn't lay flat, at all.
Then I tried painting it blackbut something about the paint reacted with something else that was on it and it bubbled all over the place.
sooooooooooo
I used what I had left of my brown flocking. it worked! I didnt have enough to flock the entire surface but I got about 2/3 of it, enough to shoot things on it. I reshot a few things that were completely lost in the pictures previously and they look 1,000x better now.

Posted 6 years agowell, this last weekend was interesting. lots of people at the event, a few thousand at least over the 2 days.
I was vending with
HeartsTreasure she did great! contrary to what she kept saying.
And I wasn't really expecting much to be bluntly honest, I didn't have much to begin with and I don't have anything cheap that would end up being super impulsive.
I ended up selling 3 small wrist cuffs and 2 larger wrist braces, all of which I had to mark WAY down from the original prices I had them at.
On the upside, what got sold paid for my gas, food and my half of a vendor table at Steampunk Day Orlando later this month. https://www.steampunkday.net/carnevale#!
A couple people got interested in ordering custom display boxes and or display trays, if I hear from any of them I'll be genuinely surprised.
Plenty of people looked interested in the boxes I had but they failed to understand the cost of the wood made up 80% of the prices I listed, and they weren't cheap knockoffs from China made out of particle board *shrugs*
took almost 2 years before any of my leathers sold, maybe eventually someone will get interested in an artisan box made from exotic woods. not gonna hold my breath though.

new predicament + vending? (sort of)
Posted 6 years agoZebra Wood is a rather interesting wood to work with, it gives off an optical illusion when working with it. I was't thinking about the grain pattern messing with me until I took almost too many passes on it with my planar to make it flat. i finally grabbed my straight edge and sure enough, no matter how crooked and warped it looked it was perfectly flat. My latest box is still a pretty good size, it's just..............shorter, then it was going to be, by about half an inch. I was thinking of adding a chunk of a different wood between both halves of the box and cut the new lid opening in that piece simply to recover the initial height that it was supposed to be. Or just throw the lid on and be done with it.
as it sits right now, the box is made of Zebra Wood with Bocote inlaid into the lid. it was supposed to be a nice contrast but after adding the oil they kinda blended together, you can still definitely tell the difference between the two but the color matches pretty well.
probably not going to post pictures of it until after this weekend but if your a local to the central west coast of Florida I will be at the
Floral City Strawberry Festival http://www.gostrawberryfest.com/
with

and I will have this particular piece with others available both Saturday and Sunday the 2nd and 3rd of March

Woodcarft Commissions Officially opened

or challenge me with something I have never done before,
previous example of this would be the fountain pen display box I made
https://www.furaffinity.net/view/30456232/
Communication with custom orders is a MUST! With work like this I want to get as much feedback as possible during the build as this is an actual physical thing you will have in your home. My last custom order I think there was a string of at least 50 e-mails .
The only exception to the communication rule is if you make a 100% artistic freedom commission. With artistic freedom commissions I only need to know what it is you want ie box, tray, stand, display, what it will be used for and dimensions and type of wood.
Price is determined by the following....
-size
-complexity
-time involved
-wood type (largest factor)
an example of something made from different woods would be a custom order for 2, 8 x 14 inch jewelry trays
https://www.furaffinity.net/view/30163497/
made from Red Oak and black velvet for the liner, both trays together were $50
if the same trays were made with walnut they would have been $70
or, currently, the most expensive wood I have on hand, Bocote, they would have been $150
When placing a custom order please keep in mind that I have to say I accept it first, If I respond with a question that doesn't mean I accepted it, it means you have piqued my interest.
If I accept your custom order I require
-A MINIMUM of 50% down payment for wood and or other supplies needed. 100% payment at this time is good too
-Patience is a must! I will do my best to make your order quickly but somethings like glue and finishes take time to dry, glue at least 24 hours and some finishes aren't completely set for almost 2 weeks.
-after completing your order I will then send an invoice for the remainder of the balance, if any.
-and again, communication, lots and lots and lots of communication as outlined above.
Other nitty gritty:
you must be over 18 to place a custom order, if I find that you are under 18 your order will be canceled and money refunded, I don't want money to disappear because of angry parents, and I have a zero tolerance policy with lying about age.

Walnut
Posted 6 years agoWalnut is absolutely beautiful wood, I wish I had started working with it sooner.
hard wood,
easy to work with
and with minimal finish sanding actually takes on a reflective shine and add a dab of oil afterward and done!
need a couple more small things for it and I'll have some pictures of it to post.
Now all I need to do is find time to head to Orlando and get some more walnut... or other woods
The store in Orlando that I heard about has a LOT of choices for exotic woods. I may have to sell my house after going there, jk

query
Posted 6 years agoI'm planning a new box that should rival the Pen Display I just got done with https://www.furaffinity.net/view/30456232/
But I cant decide on the wood I want to use for it. The last time my parents were in town they gave me a couple pieces of some really nice
Curly Maple https://www.nwfiguredwoods.com/imag.....urly-maple.jpg
and
Curly Wild Cherry https://tse1.explicit.bing.net/th?i.....EK&pid=Api
the pictures are for reference, not the actual pieces I have.
I have enough of each to make 1 box roughly the same size as the pen display which was roughly
8 inches x 6 inches x 3 1/2 inches tall
or for those not in the US
203mm x 152mm x 89mm
And of course, afterwards it would be for sale in my Etsy Store
I just cant decide between the Maple or the Cherry
They brought a couple other woods but those have other plans

Cleaning house
Posted 6 years agoI decided, for obvious reasons, that after submitting the final version of projects and commissions I will move all WIP submissions over to scraps to try and keep my main gallery looking clean
This sucks
Posted 6 years agoWelp, everything was going great with the display box I'm making for a commissioner......untill I went to go check on it while the glue was setting.
Every glued joint looked great! Everything was looking perfect.... then I removed the clamps and heard a pop......
The glass cracked.
With how i put the whole thing together the glass was a perminant part, no possible way to remove it. Now i get to break it out and try and figure out how to get a new piece put in. I have an idea with how to do it but if I mess that up I'll be making it over for a third time.

waiting game
Posted 6 years agoI'm getting on quite well with my latest build https://www.furaffinity.net/view/30215951/
but now i get to wait for a bit. I just placed an order for hinges and flocking materials and due to the nature of the adhesive for the flocking it has to be shipped via UPS ground, which means I might get it in 2 weeks instead of 2 days like the other things I ordered..
On another note, Something I ordered the end of December will be sitting on my front porch when I get home today, if you don't remember what that is or you missed that journal, I bought a blowtorch a few days ago, I'll need it for what I ordered ^_^ super excited!!!!

After the utter failure yesterday at the Doctors (wont get into it) I actually got more determined to see this thing through and I ended up making a "sled" for my table saw, kind of like this one http://s3.amazonaws.com/finewoodwor.....eauty-main.jpg
With that I'll be able to make more accurate and consistent cuts with my table saw and much faster too as it also makes things a LOT safer, no potential hospital visits from wood being shot at you from a spinning saw blade.
And I don't like doing this, mainly because I'm usually the one helping others, but..........
I started a Ko-fi page, everything donated will go straight into buying supplies for future projects.
If you feel so inclined it would be much appreciated https://www.ko-fi.com/tictoccreations

Router Table update
Posted 7 years agowell, after my initial trial run with the router table things have gotten a LOT messier in my garage.
Needless to say with the bit barely hanging on the first time around there was barely any mess because it was hardly turning at all. With the bits properly tightened holy hell does that thing spit shavings absolutely EVERYWHERE *shrugs*. There is a guard that fits over the bit and whatever you are cutting, if it's less then 1/2 inch thick, anything thicker and the guard has to be flipped up, the down side to that is the guard funnels the shavings to the back of the table so no guard, no funnel effect. I cut a couple small pieces last night and I was brushing and vacuuming shavings off my clothes for a good 10 minutes lmao.

ringing in with a bang
Posted 7 years agoliterally, everyone in my neighborhood lauches fireworks for damn near EVERY holiday, literally, a few even light them off for St. Patrick's day.
And I could have had a trip to the ER but I got lucky as hell. I bought a router table yesterday and was excited to give it a try, got everything put together, got the router bit tightened really tight but forgot to take out the locking shank from the shaft, turned it on and broke the shank. I didn't think anything of it really, I cleared out the pieces of the shank and fired it up and routed a couple things to see what the feel was like. Well, I butchered a couple scrap boards, and routed the edges of the last cigar coffin. But something didn't seem quite right but I chocked it up to being a noob. But still, occasionally a board would seem to pop up a little for no reason at all.
Well, I found out this morning that when the shank broke it completely loosened up the bit, as in it was barely holding on. 10,000 RPM on a spinning knife. ya, I could have had a really bad night. I'm going to double, triple and quadruple check the tightness of the bit from now on.

interesting? or dumb?
Posted 7 years agodoesn't really matter which considering I find this to be a little of both.
One thing that it definitely IS, is impulsive. I tend to do that a lot....
I got an Amazon gift card for Christmas and it may not have covered the whole purchase, I just couldn't stand it any more, I had to have something I had been drooling over for at least a year now, and since I've gotten into wood working recently it made more sense to me.
I bought a custom branding iron with my logo and name on it I ordered the 1 1/2 x 2 inch
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B.....XGSA5&th=1
only time will tell if this was a dumb decision, literally, this thing is going to take about a month to be made and shipped.
I'll be taking plenty of pictures of it when it shows up though.

irony at it's finest
Posted 7 years agoI finally gave in and went to the Pottermore website to do their quizes to see what house, wand and patronus I would have in the Harry Potter universe.
The irony is I changed my fursona to a Rabbit about 2 years ago, I just thought it would suit me better then a wolf. The Patronus test that I just completed gave me a "Wild rabbit" lol

lesson learned
Posted 7 years agolesson learned the hard way and I want to be mad about it, but I can only shake my head.
Today i found out that automotive clear coat pits epoxy, and it pits it a LOT. On Friday I get to sand the hell out of the handle on the brass knife and get all the clear coat off of it and try something different. This time I'm thinking coat the whole thing in clear epoxy, will give it a nice high gloss shine and it will also fill in all the damn pits. if the guy charged me and didn't do it for free I think I'd be livid. And not only did it pit the resin but it dulled everything and changed the color of the wood even. I'm really hoping I can get the natural color back or if it will take a stain after sanding it down because the nice yellow pine and red oak look almost the same muddy bleh color.
On a different note automotive clear coat looks absolutely wonderful on a brass knife blade.

just never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never use it on wood or resin
moment of truth
Posted 7 years agotonight will be when I find out whether or not my idea for my current knife was a success or a failure. Trying out something called "Cold Casting" clear resin with a whole crap load of metal dust in it, in this case it's powdered brass. If everything worked out like it should have it will look like I poured molten brass into the cutouts on the handle. But if I messed up the mix on the resin or added to much brass powder I'll be re cutting the handle, again. I'll know in a few hours and I'm crossing my fingers
jumping the gun
Posted 7 years agowell, I got a little too eager to work on the brass knife last night and started cutting into the handle I glued on a few days ago, cutting with the coping saw, very jagged and rough edges with TONS of sanding needed, it'll take quite a while to smooth everything out.
And today Sears had their Scroll saw on sale for under $92.78 and i had a $30 coupon from buying the table saw from them last week, and I got paid today so after tax it was just over $60, damn near $100 off full retail price. So today I could have cut out the pattern super easy with very minimal sanding needed *headdesk* I almost want to cut off the handle and start over now lol. instead of sanding and filing the pattern smooth all weekend I could cut a new blank today and glue it on and tomorrow cut the shape out instead of sanding it down (which took a few hours to do) sand out the rough edges and cut out the pattern that I severely butchered last night. and Sunday, very minimal sanding and the rest, well, the rest will have to be shown instead of talked about. If it goes according to plan it will be pretty cool.
but if I had waiting until today for the scroll saw i would be just about finished with this knife tonight, meh. at least I wont have to remake the blade, that would be horrible lol

just about there
Posted 7 years agoI seriously hope this thing turns out good and ends up interesting someone because it isn't going to be cheap by any means.
So far I've spent about $60-$70 on materials alone, some of the things came in high count multiples so I won't be needing to buy more of some things for quite a while, but still.
The highest cost item? a brass bar, 1/4x1x12 inches $20 + shipping, seriously hope I don't screw it up, on the plus side there is enough for a second try if the first one fails.
The biggest down side is that if I don't want to do all the cutting by hand I'm going to have to fork out the cash for a scroll saw which may make me hold off on getting things started for now. Considering Black Friday is coming up rather quickly I may wait to see if there are any deals and deep discounts.
I actually could have gotten a scroll saw today except I ended up buying a table saw instead *headdesk*
I have too many (insert multiple expletives here) ideas floating around in my head that I'm going to go broke before anything sells *headdesks repeatedly*
