Really? No, This Won't Be A Civil War.
General | Posted 4 years agoThe potential US Supreme Court ruling altering Roe vs Wade is an incredibly divisive issue that has actually been brewing for years. Some people are wiling to attack each other over it with various means at their disposal. I get that.
I've heard concerns that this will lead to a civil war. People who believe this are missing an important detail: despite the name, civil wars aren't caused by the public or the masses. They happen when a significant portion of the armed forces in a country or nation decide they will follow an alternate chain of command, and the current leadership is willing to fight for control instead of letting them go.
There will be protests, property damage, and people hurt (yes, I'm understating that). However, whatever decisions and actions happen and where-ever the new course of history flows from here, the US isn't going to break up over this. There simply isn't enough moral outrage (and financial benefits to interested parties) to cause (and support) mass armed defections.
I'm pretty certain of myself, but if I missed something please feel free to share so long as you can remain civil. That means no sniping at each other, too.

General | Posted 4 years agoTurns out Russia has pulled this stunt before back in 2008, in Georgia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Georgian_War
Russia's interests were threatened because Georgia had been a buffer between them and the Middle East but wasn't willing to continue that role after the Soviet breakup, and Georgia was (say it with me now) considering becoming a member of both the EU and NATO.
So Russia went in and assisted a couple sympathetic regions to become independent of Georgia, while threatening the entire country in the process.
It's the same playbook. If permitted they probably will take all of Ukraine, but all they really want are the two (or three) sympathetic areas so they can keep the region on edge and feel less vulnerable.
There won't be a world war over this anymore than there was one started over a decade ago, but the European and International reactions aren't overdone. Putin probably has no intention of giving back the areas he's "liberated" no matter how bad the sanctions are.
If I missed something (which is entirely possible), please feel free to share so long as you can remain civil.

How To Offer NFT Commissions (COPY AND SHARE)
General | Posted 4 years agoFirst, let's get something out of the way.
Non-fungible tokens are receipts for hyperlinks, stored on blockchains. That is all they are. They DON'T contain ANY information about the images, music, or whatever else that link is supposed to go to. Someone can change the file the link goes to, or simply shut down the server that artwork is hosted on, and the NFT will be exactly the same but the linked file will be gone.
Buying the NFT doesn't grant ownership of the digital file, regardless of what kind of file it is or if it represents a physical item or not.
With that in mind, you may receive a request to create and sell an NFT (probably in a text, e-mail, or other on-line message). Presuming the requester is an honest person and you don't want to reply with dismissive laughter, what do you do?
Offer to create an ordinary commission for them, which they may use to create an NFT for themselves. When they ask why, give them two reasons.
First, creating an NFT is NOT free. The process can involve many micropayments that add up, then if it doesn't actually sell you would be stuck with it and out the fees and charges.
Second, the NFT promise of ownership of a unique artwork can be done without using them. Either ship the original physical artwork or promise never to reproduce the original file of a digital commission.
Keep the clients happy without leaving money on the table. If your would-be commissioner suddenly disappears because you won't create the NFT yourself, then you'll know having your artwork wasn't as important to them as getting you to pay for creating the NFT.
Good luck!

Why You Should Stop Worrying About NFT's. [Video]
General | Posted 4 years agoIf you are one of the many people who think you are owed money if someone buys an NFT that involves a publicly viewable image that you posted on-line, cut it out. No, they aren't stealing any part of your work and they don't owe you anything (although they ARE being scammed, so you can laugh at them if you think that's funny).

I've Noticed This About My Life (Personal, Non-Furry)
General | Posted 4 years agoThe only memorial service I've ever been to that I remember -- which excludes any I may have attended when I was very young -- was for an asshole who I wouldn't give two shits about.
I'm at that age when alot of people I knew are gone or will be going soon.
Recently I had an opportunity to see off an acquaintance. We weren't close friends, but I had plans to go.
Then another friend who was still alive needed my help (he still does, but I don't think he understands that).
Then I found out the service would be on the first day available to meet with him about it.
Then I found out my only ride to the service would be with someone I hadn't seen in two decades and didn't miss.
Maybe I'll somehow wind up going to his service, if I'm still around by then?
Anyway, I blew off the service. Another person who did attend indirectly confirmed my suspicions about how well the ride over and back might have gone. And the still-alive friend got some of his issues solved.
So, I've been told that funerals, memorials, and wakes are actually for the living, as part of the process of getting on with our lives. According to that concept, I didn't need it as much as I thought if I chose not to go. It's cold, but it's true.
I hope everyone who made it got what they needed it from it. When he was still kicking, the departed got more shit from Reality (and some of the other people living in it) than he deserved.

Memory Test For 80's&90's Kids(Do You Remember This Video
General | Posted 4 years agoSomeone dug up an old VHS tape and tried to salvage some of the animation on it. The series was Super Turbo Atomic Mega Rabbit but only the opening and and part of the first episode was recovered from the tape.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvqXRFPU_aQ
https://youtu.be/DvqXRFPU_aQ
Later, someone managed to find and post a clean copy of this, and included the show's ending credits. Interestingly enough, the original series title that appeared in the finished animation was Super Turbo Atomic Ninja Rabbit (not "Mega").
In the version that aired there were obvious edits, including not only a CGI title being slapped on, but also a clip from the show was used to fill a gap cut into the opening animation.

How to Webcomic by Star Prichard (Book Plug)
General | Posted 4 years agoHow to Webcomic by Star Prichard is what it says on the tin.
If you are starting out or just looking for more info to consume on the subject, this is a very thorough book that covers alot briefly and clearly (if you're someone who has been at this for twenty years or have written your own book about how to make comics, there's probably not much in here you don't already know).
Fresh from a succsessful Kickstarter campaign, the writer has gotten enough positive reaction from backers who have gotten the e-book version that she's making the book available in her own store for anyone who didn't support but who might be interested now.
Until she fulfils her backer rewards, however, only e-book copies are available for immediate purchase, delivering physical books will be delayed (more details on her site).

General | Posted 5 years agoI have a friend who really wants to become big in comics. His style of story and art is best described as neo-silver. He's self published between half to a full dozen print floppies, and has other nearly finished stories in binders. Bless him, he can't grasp the basic functions of the Internet. I've seen him struggle to handle the most basic items such as email, and convincing him to edit his pages to fit other formats (like the one panel wide vertical scroll they use on Webtoons) is a lost cause. He doesn't want to be a part of DC/Marvel/whatever, but without a practical understanding of the digital highway to promote his work I'm afraid it's doomed to obscurity. I've tried to work with him to no avail. If it's true the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, I think I'm a little closer than I thought.
I'm not expecting help, I just wanted to vent. Thank you.
