[EVENT] Pittsburgh's Monthly Fur Meet! *Tomorrow!*
Posted 17 years agoREMINDER!
Pittsburgh's Monthly Fur Meet!
When: Thursday, November 13, 2008
Time: 6:30 – 9:00pm
Where: Games N'at in Pittsburgh's South Side
http://www.gamesnat.com
Cost: $8 (Play all night!)
I spoke with the Owner on the phone yesterday to remind them we were coming Thursday evening and she said, "Oh, the Furries. We love you guys. You folks are welcome here anytime you want." That made me feel good and I wanted to share it with all of you.
Arrive as early as you want and stay as late as you like! Games N'at also has the most reasonably priced snack bar that I've ever seen here in the area.
Shuffle up to the pool tables, get in some fast paced games of air hockey, try your paw at pinball or reminisce with a room full of arcade hits from the 80's. :) If you're not up for arcade games and such, there's plenty of room to sit and socialize or break out the sketchbooks and draw. They've even got a big screen television you can hook your Wii, Xbox or PS3 to if that is your thing.
Fursuits are welcome and tails and ears are encouraged.
So come on out and have some fun with fellow Pittsburgh Area furs and don't forget your art badges if you have'em!
For more information and directions, jump over to my webpage at www.swiftsden.net and scroll down to the Monthly Fur Meet section, or visit the Games N'at website at http://www.gamesnat.com!
Hope to see ya there!

[WPAFW Report]It was a weekend of surprises; Good surprises.
Posted 17 years agoLast weekend was the Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend, now in it's 8th year, and it was full of surprises and success.
The entire staff and I have been working diligently for most of the month of September to put the final touches on the event. As we began to mobilize crates, boxes, food, drink, and miscellaneous items of import over to the hotel and get them set up, it was like being at the top of the first hill on a roller coaster. We'd got it this far, now it was a matter of riding it out and adjusting to the curves in the track.
With the momentum of years of growth and 12 months of planning, the Western PA Furry Weekend began. The revised room layouts and programming changes at the hotel solved last year's "cramped" conditions. I often wondered as I walked around, where everyone was. True, our Friday night attendance wasn't at last year's numbers until after midnight, but even if it had been packed, I think the layout would have prevailed.
So here are the numbers:
Attendance: 108 (2007: 96)
Money Raised for Charity: $1,039 (2007: $657)
Fursuits: 34 (2007: 24)
Acts/Skits in Menagerie: 8 (2007: 8)
No event is without some snags or the need to make adjustments and 2008 offered it's share of challenges that were overcome with little or no impact to the attendees; as it should be. So, over-all this year was another success, entertaining furs from all across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York, Eastern Michigan and Indiana, parts of Maryland, Virginia and Kentucky, and Ontario, Canada.
So thank you to everyone who attended and enjoyed the weekend with us; especially our supporters and those who pre-reg'ed. Thank you to everyone who donated something to our Charity Raffle, regardless of the size. Thank you to the event Staff and our Volunteers and thank you to each of my chair people, Xavier, Silaria, Javi, Cadpig, Akira and TOS. This event can not happen without your assistance. Finally thank you to our Featured Artist Mehndi X for your support, generosity and patience throughout the year.
Mark your calendars for next year's Western PA Furry Weekend to be held the weekend of October 2-4, 2009 and congratulations to next year's Featured Artist, StarRazor!

Western PA Furry Weekend starts this evening!
Posted 17 years agoWell the day is finally here. October 3rd at 7pm we kick off the fun and fellowship of the Western PA Furry Weekend at the Comfort Inn - Pittsburgh North. Tonight, aside from plenty of social area for just catching up with friends and making new ones, we've got hot appetizers while they last, snacks, and drinks, Looney Labs Game Demos with Eyeore, and the Fursuit Photo Shoot and group photos starting at 11pm by Dobie.
Registration opens at 6:30pm tonight if you arrive early, then stop in at any one of a number of eateries to grab a bite of dinner, before returning to take part in the fur meet.

Construction Alerts!
There's road construction on Rt 28 North at the Etna By-pass and North and South between the RIDC Park and Harmar Township exits. For other information on road improvement projects on PA State highways click the link below:

There's road construction on the PA Turnpike approaching Exit 48, Allegheny Valley, in both directions. For more information on road improvement projects on the PA Turnpike visit the PA Turnpike website:
http://www.paturnpike.com/improve/improve_map.aspx

Western PA Furry Weekend! OMG it's Tomorrow!!
Posted 17 years ago*laughs* Yep, the Western PA Furry Weekend starts tomorrow evening at 7pm and Registration is scheduled to open at 6:30pm.
Why seven at night you ask? Well to give folks time to get home from work, have dinner, and drive there. Friday night is the kick off for what has always been the "main event" the Fur-b-que portion at the park. We stay open until 2am to give folks who are driving in from a distance some social time once they arrive and get checked in. In the same way, Saturday night's activities are planned to continue and wind down the festivities of the day. Kinda like a Dead Dog Party.
So, knock on wood, the weather is looking to be fantastic for the weekend. So long as this low moves off to the east like it's forecast, we'll be blessed by a high pressure system bringing partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low to mid 60's. Fairly comfortable weather for early October here in Western PA and perfect for fursuiting Saturday and a walk around the Zoo on Sunday. :)
I look forward to seeing everyone who's coming to join us at the Western PA Furry Weekend and help raise money for this year's charity, the Beaver County Humane Society. We have a veritable horde of stuff to raffle off at what I consider the best spread of furry themed items any Furry event or con has put together yet. Our goal is to raise $1000.
See ya there!

Western PA Furry Weekend! Three Days to Go!
Posted 17 years agoHey folks!
It's getting close to that time now. Caddie and Akira are in the kitchen already prepping for the mounds of appetizers and food they'll be serving Friday night and Saturday. MaeLin is busy baking piles of cookies for you to nosh on Saturday night!
Registration has packed up 125 registration bags and our Charity auction continues to receive donations of artwork and commissions by electronic and snail mail.
The hotel is preparing for our arrival this weekend and is excited to have us as their guest for another year.
The WPAFW is now in possession of a freestanding puppet stage as part of the backdrop for the stage performances. I'm still short acts and skits for the Menagerie. I have four and the promise of a couple more. If you've been hesitant or shy to try your paw at puppetry or fursuit performance, this is a nice small venue to get your feet wet. All the information you need to prepare a skit or act is here, http://swift-fox.livejournal.com/548795.html, or E-mail event AT wpafw.org if you're interested and I'll send you all the information you need. Or you can sign up during the mandatory Menagerie Rehearsal, Saturday, October 4, from 10-11am, or later if we need more time.

Day 4 (draft) is complete.
Posted 17 years agoThose who know where my true talents lie know what this means.
For those who don't, I've finished the draft of the fourth day of a fictional story I've been writing for the last two years or so, "Lessons in Lace." The conclusion of Day 3 prophesied a very dark fourth day and a distinct change, and maturity, in the style and feel of the story.
Drafts have been shared behind a "BF Filter" in my LJ. Send me a note if you want access, but you're required to comment. It's the only way I can improve.

Western PA Furry Weekend! Just two weeks away!
Posted 17 years agoHey friends!
I do believe that we are on track to having yet another fantastic Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend full of furry fun and fellowship here in Pittsburgh in two weeks! Yep, October 3, 4 & 5, 2008 in the autumn clad Allegheny Valley.
If you're a local fur, or one within a 5-6 hour travel distance of Pittsburgh, and are still on the fence about attending, perhaps I can offer some enticement to attend.
I've just been shown over 100 pieces of furry related art and paraphernalia that have been donated for our Charity Raffle, and there's more on the way. We've got more to give away than we have expected attendees. You do the math. Where else do you have the chance to help out a worthy charitable cause, the Beaver County Humane Society, and take home some really respectable stuff?
We are also proud to be honoring the very talented and local artist
MehndiX as our Featured Artist for 2008. She's a great person, a good friend and very approachable.
Registration opens at the door Friday night at the hotel and Saturday from noon until 5pm at the Fur-b-que. We've got a full schedule of activities to keep you entertained, food and drink, an outdoor barbeque, fursuit accommodations, our very own Menagerie, and you'll still have plenty of time to meet up with friends old and new to hang out and socialize.
So why not give us another look? www.wpafw.org.
It's worth the trip; even if it's just for the day!

Line work is done for Rama's badge...
Posted 17 years agoJust an update for my commissioners...
Wednesday night I spent 2 more hours finishing up the line work for Rama's badge. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that it will provide the basis for the two other feline badges I've been commissioned to do.
Next free nights I'll be working on applying colors, shade and shadowing and other finishing touches.
Progress is being made! Thank you for your continued patience.

Posted 17 years agoHi folks and fellow artists!
I've been trying to do all my sketching and such with my Wacom of late in order to become more proficient with it.
I've been more or less successful so far but I've got a question/problem.
I'm using it on a 4 month old, Vista 64 machine, with 2 GB of RAM, plus a top end graphics card, utilizing CS3. When I draw a line, the computer lags behind and isn't keeping up with the speed of the stylus.
I pretty much have nothing else running in the background except for Firefox, AVG, ZoneAlarm and various other incidental programs that are protecting my machine from the internetz.
I didn't see an update for my tablet out on Wacom, so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if they found a solution to it. It's a bit annoying, and drawing to the computer's speed makes for shakey, wiggly lines. :P
Thanks ahead of time.

"The Great Featherfur Flood; Part 11"
Kuronue shifted his feet quickly in order to keep them from sinking too far into the soft ground before turning around to start looking for a drier area to await the rest of the tribes arrival. He didn't get far before he heard someone shout from behind. It was in that moment that he felt as if he could stop worrying about everything, that he felt as if everything would turn out right and that maybe just maybe it would actually stop raining....but then the moment passed. His shoulders sagged and his head drooped as he closed his eyes, before a smirk crossed his face and he turned back around to meet the eyes of the vixen he could now see standing on the incline to the foot hills. It took all of his will power to not grin wildly down at her and bound down the hill like a kit, his Bloodfeather was okay, yes 'his' Bloodfeather, only in situations like these was he ready to admit that he could possibly be interested in the vixen, though he'd admit it only to himself.
Kuronue's blue eyes pierced her own violet. Cochran had gotten past the fact that her mind was claiming the bloody spy as hers. The yipping kits were drowned out by the blood rushing to her head and the rain.
Though he tried to keep all signs of his relief from showing he couldn't help the slight sway of his tail as he made his way towards her. Keeping his eyes locked with hers as he reached her he paused for a quick moment before walking right passed her and moving on towards the three foxes moving up behind her. He quickly turned and walked back towards Cochran. When he reached her side he paused again. He inhaled deeply, bringing in her scent along with that of the wet mud and vegetation that surrounded them before looking at her and cocking his head to the side.
Unfortunately, with all the rain, she didn't see the slight wag of Kuronue's tail. She didn't read relief in his form. Watching him walk straight towards her, without looking away, Cochran was stuck in time. She didn't know if she wanted to throttle him or throw herself at him and revert back to those few childhood days were she allowed herself to play. But the moment passed and she was back to the reality that Kuronue was a prick... If she had seen his reaction to her appearance maybe she wouldn't have been boiling when the smart ass spoke.
"Miss me?" he asked jokingly before he brushed lightly against her side and bounded the rest of the way back up the hill kit still in his mouth. Usually he would never joke or play around in a situation such as the one they were in, but he couldn't help it, he was happy, soaked, dirty and tired...but happy.
"Miss him?! I was worried sick! That BASTARD!" Her mind screamed. What she didn't miss was him inhaling deeper than need be. If he wasn't careful he'd breathe in all the rain and drown. Then she would know what would have happened to him and she wouldn't feel as bad. "If I missed you at all, you missed me twice as much." she said with a playful snarl. Well, it sounded serious, but if Kuronue knew her at all, he would read playfulness in it. As he bounded off, she sniffed at the mud ladened scent he left behind.
It was a twisted relationship, but it worked. Despite how angry she was with him for showing up at her destination while she had spent all that time looking for him, she knew deeeeeeeeeep DEEP down somewhere in her that she cared for him. Cochran wouldn't have spent all that time looking for any other fox. In that same place she knew would have to admit it sometime. She had almost lost him. A smile appeared on her face long after she was sure he wouldn't see it.
Then the kit in her muzzle yipped and she scowled. "Shut up, I don't like him!" She snapped and raced after Kuronue. And so she had come full circle back to the denial. Whatever. It wasn't like he was going to disappear like he almost had today. Psh that could never happen. He was the bane of her existence. The arrival of the others barely phased her love(/hate) struck mind as she continued walking. Sure, she was tried. But she was a warrior. She didn't feel the tiredness. Tired meant dead. She wasn't dead just yet.
Throughout all of this mayhem, drama, and near-death experiences, the grumpy little fennec, Fik, had been within large-earshot of the group the entire time. Now, she finally trudged toward them, cold, sopping and glaring with an intensity that could probably have stopped the storm itself.
With a quick shake, her oversized tail managed to fluff itself back into a little bit of order. Black eyes finally found Cochran, who was talking with the one who seemed to be leading. Or maybe she was leading. It was hard to tell. "Nobody died along the way, I take it?" Fik asked with an air of cynicism.
With Brighteyes on his back and a male kit in his muzzle, Swift remained surprised to see Cochran completely flustered with the arrival of Kuronue. Hoatzin had finally returned with Banquo and the vixen Dawntyde had stumbled up the rise virtually exhausted. Fik, a small tan fennec hopped up on a nearby log and quipped something to Cochran, but the meaning was lost on the young cross fox. Along with Foxxie and Dominic it seemed that these were all who had survived the flooding. Ten foxes and a pawful of kits.
A nuzzle in the back of his neck pulled him back from his thoughtful trance. They needed to get to where ever they were going before exhaustion took its toll on their meager ranks. He turned his head and saw Dawntyde take to the ground, clearly distressed. The cross fox called out, "Dawntyde. Now is not the time to rest." Calling now to them all he barked, "We must press on and find some shelter and protection in which to rest and plan our next step."
With his last word, Swift willed his own paws forward. Cochran had pointed them in a direction; it was just a matter of moving forward. Perhaps the protected shelter they needed would present itself if the Creator was willing. The male fox had to place hope in his beliefs; the same beliefs handed down to him by his Dame.
Swift took one step; then another; and soon he was walking again unchecked. He hoped that the others would follow him.

My paw works again! (Status of Commissions)
Posted 17 years agoIt's been a couple months since I opened my big muzzle and took on three badge commissions. The end of July I cut my right hand while firefighting and that's put me at a loss to do much drawing since then.
I just wanted to chime in and let folks know that I have started on Rama's badge now that my paw is better.
I've got MFM this weekend, and September has me gearing up for the WPAFW. I'll keep at it when I can but you may be looking at October/November deliveries. :(
Better to be up front with ya than not say anything at all. This was, after all, an experiment to see how my busy life schedule meshed with finding quality time to produce good arts.
Thank you for your continued patience.

"The Great Featherfur Flood; Part 10"
Swift noticed the state of exhaustion the Greyfeather was in, but he would not shake the dignity of the proud vixen by offering to help before she was ready to ask.
"Brighteyes." Swift yipped quietly, "I've got a job for you."
He waited until he had the little red vixen kit's attention before continuing, "You're going to play kit wrangler while we travel since you're a moon or two older than they are. Don't let them stray and make sure they all keep up. We won't be far away if you need a paw though."
Brighteyes nodded curtly to show she understood, and looked back to the kits around her. They looked at her with helpless and scared eyes, and she tried her best to give them a reassuring smile. The young kit led the group of other mini-foxes behind the larger ones.
Swift watched the young vixen hop to her task with enthusiasm then he caught Dominic's eye. With only body language Swift conveyed to the dark furred fox to stay near to Foxxie in case the venerable lady fox required assistance.
Brighteyes' ears swiveled and she heard barks and yips from up the foothills. These sounds gave her hope of others having made their way through this horrible storm. Her stride became a little stronger. She yipped back to the other kits and they all looked a little confused, but seem to get the message.
The small group of foxes made their way up and into the foot hills, beckoned on by the insistent yaps of a strong vixen ahead of them; their only way of knowing where the other survivors of this tragedy may be.
The way was long, several hundreds of paces for an adult fox, two or three times that many for the kits. Toiling against the ever rising slope and exhaustion, the group left behind the destruction of their lowland homes. With steady perseverance they came once again to the palisade above the crater and ran into the fit form of Cochran and no one else.
When they had finally made it to the top of the ridge, Brighteyes saw Cochran, the strong vixen whom she had secretly admired. She dared not sit down even though her small legs were weary from the ascent, for she wanted to appear strong and worthy among the other foxes. She stood beside Swift, the other kits with her too.
Foxxie looked alike a mess. Her red coat was soaked and hanging limply from her form but, despite this she managed a small but weak nod of greeting before her legs once again seemed to shake. It was only then she allowed herself to sit down and rest her weary body.
"No," She rumbled irritably. "It isn't safe yet." The warrior knew Foxxie was tired and exhausted.
"Run to the foothills," Cochran barked at them all, You too!"
"But the kits?" Swift said, "We've all come so far, surely we can rest for a moment?"
"There's no time." The strong and martial vixen remarked, "We're going now!"
He watched as Cochran scooped up a kit in her jaws and bounded off.
Swift sighed, looked at them all then yerfed to Brighteyes, "Hop on my back lil sisfur. We'll be moving far too quickly now for the kit's to keep up. I suggest we all take a kit and follow as best we can." He looked to Dominic and Foxxie as he waited for Brighteyes to comply.
Her ears sagged a little, as she knew that no matter how strong she tried to be, she was still too small to truly keep up. But she yipped in compliance and clambered up onto Swift's back. She was amazed how these elder foxes were so strong. When Swift took another kit into his maw, she remembered back when Foxxie was carrying all of the kits across the river. She wanted to be just like them when she grew up.
When she had, Swift nuzzled one of the kits then took it, this one a rare male, gently in his muzzle and it whined pitifully. "Come on everyone, before she get's too far ahead." Swift said flatly and set off at a trot after Cochran.
She held on tight as they set off after Cochran, she nuzzled the back of Swift's neck in a silent thank you.

"The Great Featherfur Flood; Part 9"
Suddenly, several desperate, harried barks reached their ears; clearly something bad has transpired. The cross fox turned his head to the sound and spied a tan fox and a red furred fox at a point further upstream, below where they stood. Swift could barely see the tan fox drop two or three small bundles at the paws of the red fox, then turn and bolt back into the forest. Swift looked over to Dominic who had clearly heard and seen it also and had come to the same conclusion.
Dominic turned his head to look at Swift and he said, "I am compelled to return to the river and help."
"I will go with you." Swift said, earning a nod from the bloodfeather before he bolted down the way they had just come.
Brighteyes had been silent as she had listened to Swift's wise words. She did not stir upon his back, and she paid no mind to the rain and mud running down her nose and muzzle. She was transfixed with his words, almost as if they were the very rays of sunshine that had been cut off some time ago when the storm first rolled in.
"To each of us he grants the gift of experience and wisdom which will help us persevere and help others to survive the challenges to come."
Slowly she realized this for herself, and Brighteyes slid off of the cross fox's back. "I think I'll try walking from now own." The kit looked up to Swift and gave him a soft smile, her blue eyes sparkling against the rain. She would prove herself this time. Remembering tales the elders would tell on windy nights, inside the warmth of the den caused her to stand a bit taller, and have more power to her stride. The tales consisted of young foxes facing and overcoming challenges to prove themselves worthy of recognition and rank. It seemed this storm was her very own challenge, and with the help of her newly acquired friends, she wanted to get through this; for them, and for herself.
Swift smiled at her and nodded, "Then let us be off young vixen." Swift stepped off to retrace their steps back down the rise to the valley below, slowing his pace so that Brighteyes could keep up, and following the tracks that Dominic left behind to guide them. On his way down he saw the red fox lift something in her muzzle and wade into the river.
It had been a good while since Hoatzin had left and the river was waiting for no one. It had risen visibly since the three kits were put in her care. She could not afford to wait any longer and would not for the sake of the three kits under her charge. There was a good chance of them being lost if she waited any longer; swept away in the fast current from her grasp. With her mind now set on crossing to get these three to safety she picked one of the kits in her mouth by the scruff before plunging into the water, her paws could still touch the bottom of the ford but only barely. She would have to speed this up. She fought against the current and luckily she had enough of a hold in places in the ford to fight off the current and arrive on the other side.
Dominic arrived at the river bank just as Foxxie was pulling herself from the swift current. "Foxxie? Who's is this? What happened to Hoatzin?" The GreyFeather had no time for conversation. She laid the fox kit at Dominc's feet, whispered something in its ear and turned to cross the river once more.
She found it was a harder crossing this time; the river was rising faster than she'd anticipated. She reached the other side with out any great trouble unhindered from carrying a kit in her muzzle. She splashed out of the river and ran the few feet to the two other kits. There was no time to continue to carry them one by one to the other side. She pushed the two kits close together before grabbing them both by their scruffs. It was a risky move as it was harder to carry them both in her mouth; but, she did not think either kit was old enough to ride her back cross the river. In seconds she was once again in the river, paddling now for the other side as her paws could no loner touch stony bottom. Carrying both kits by the scruff weighed her head down and made it difficult for her to keep all of their heads above water. Her grip began to slip and without thinking she clamped her jaws tighter on their scruffs, she could now taste the salty blood of the small kits in her mouth. She was too concerned about fighting the current to arrive to the other side to feel guilty about hurting them. If she hadn't tightened her grip they would have certainly been lost.
"This is madness!" Swift barked as he arrived and watched Foxxie, who was visibly exhausted from the two crossings, making a third crossing carrying two kits. When she got near the bank, Swift splashed into the river's edge and offered his strength and support to help the elder fox out of the river and onto the bank.
"Let us help you Foxxie." Swift yerfed compassionately, "You're exhausted."
Foxxie made it to the other side but as she dragged herself from the water she felt her legs shake beneath her from the exhaustion of the three trips across the river but, denying her bodies need to rest she carried the two to their sibling and placed them down. The greyfeather command her legs to move, and they obeyed her though more slowly then before. She roused the kits to their feet and drove them forward.
With a final look back toward the other side of the river, Dominic looked for the vixen who had not returned. He looked at Foxxie and breathed, "Hoatzin?"
Foxxie looked back at him, but all she could muster was a sad shake of the head.
The group of foxes looked longingly to the other side of the river and the dark forest beyond, hoping to see the tan vixen charging for the opposite bank. But she never came. As his companions turned toward the incessant calls from the heights behind them, Swift sent a silent prayer to the Creator to keep the lost vixen safe. "May the Creator guide your paws and find you safely into our skulk once again Hoatzin."

"The Great Featherfur Flood; Part 8"
Swift's tone turned more serious as he looked ahead and observed to Dominic, "We're nearly to the top. It shouldn't be long now before we find the others."
Brighteyes listened to Dominic and Swift exchange a few words absently, her mind was elsewhere. From atop the male fox's shoulders, she could take in a bit more of her surroundings. Seeing far was difficult due to the sheet of rain creating a veil around them, but what she could see was terrifying.
As Swift walked along beside Dominic, he could feel the young vixen kit on his shoulders shifting around. He did his best to maintain a steady gate and he misread her quiet whines and whimpers to be due to her general discomfort.
"It's alright Brighty." He said, comfortingly, "You're with Dominic and me. Soon we'll find the others, and reunite you with your family."
But Brighteyes was saddened by what she saw around her. Many of the stoic, guardian trees had succumbed to the harsh winds and lay lifeless on the crater floor. Lush grasslands were now nothing but marshy swamp, and beautiful crystal streams and rivers had turned violent and murky. It seemed that all the little kit had once known, and unknowingly taken for granted, was gone. It was a lot for a little fox to take in all at once and she was worried for the first time, not so much for herself, but more for her home; their home.
She looked down at the fox carrying her, studying the top of his head for a moment. "Swift, what will happen to us now? Will we have to find a new home?" Brighteyes asked meekly.
Swift wanted to chuckle at the inexperience that shown through those words. But he swallowed his initial mirth as he understood the worry behind them. So he chose his words now more carefully.
"Brighteyes, we are foxes. We are smart; we are clever; and we will adapt and survive." The cross fox began, "The Creator knows that and loves us for it. For of all the creatures he has breathed life into, none pleases him more than our kind. That is why he has given us our beautiful coats to keep us warm in the winter and cool in the summer; and our fleet paws and bushy tail so that we may run faster than the wind. That is why he has given us our sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell to warn us of danger and hunt for food. And that is why we have a mind like no other that we use to adapt to any challenge and any environment from the freezing, arctic tundra to the dry, desert wastes."
Swift paused a moment to climb a particularly steep and unstable part of the trail to the next ridge line. His paws slipped a step, but his claws caught and he thrust himself up and onto a gentler grade where he could continue to console and regale his young charge.
"When we get complacent or too comfortable with how we live our lives, the Creator challenges our minds and our spirits into action again; like he is doing now." Swift yerfs, "It saddens him to discover that some of us are not prepared or physically unable to meet his challenge. Those that pass from this world he takes unto his own where they will forever play and run over lush green fields, without fear of hunger, disease, predators or the cold, until they feel it is their time to return. At the same time it brings him great joy to watch us overcome his challenges and survive. To each of us he grants the gift of experience and wisdom which will help us persevere and help others to survive new challenges to come."
Their path led them to the stand atop the tall palisade and look down upon the destruction nature had wrought upon their homes. Swift let out a small sigh; partly sadness and partly relief that they had indeed made it this far.
"The land will return." Swift said confidently after a few moments of reflection, "The grass and flowers will bloom with more radiance than you or I have yet seen. Our territory will be cleansed of all that was dead or unhealthy and will be rejuvenated. We will dig new earths and we will return and continue to carry out our role in the Creator's eyes." He turns his head to look back at her, continuing with enthusiasm, "No, young vixen. We will stay and carry on. You will survive to see your own kits gambol among the yellow flowers and bright green grass of our beloved Crater; and you will regale them with the fantastic tale we are living today, to their wondrous, bright eyed stares."
A few faint yips, carried on the wind through the rain, tickle Swift's ears. The cross fox turned his head to the right and spied a dark gray smudge at the edge of his vision. "There's a forest over there." He said, pointing with his muzzle, "I heard yips from that direction. If they are not finding shelter among those trees, then perhaps we can."

"The Great Featherfur Flood; Part 7"
A joyous playfulness filled Swift's heart and rather than simply calling for Brighteyes to follow and keep up, he instead play nipped at her haunches and tail and chased her up to and passed Dominic, laughing as he went.
"I'm gunna getchya ya lil, red, drowned rat." Swift jeered playfully.
He kept their game of chase close enough to the brawnier fox so as not to lose him and vice versa, but the play kept all their spirits up. It was a brief celebration of life after the harrowing and dangerous river crossing.
She giggled, and bounded away ahead of him, looking back over her shoulder to see where he was. Her heart felt lighter, seeing Swift act playful finally, instead of serious and worried like she had only seen him before. The kit couldn't keep the smile from her face, and quickly slid between Dominic's legs (almost tripping the poor fellow), hiding beneath him to see if Swift could find her.
Swift circled around and scanned the bleak, rainy landscape for the little red vixen kit, but all he could see was Dominic trudging forward on the path to higher ground. Then he spied something out of place. Dom was sporting eight legs, four of which were red and struggling to keep pace with the larger fox.
"Gotchya." Swift yerfed then bolted forward across the wet soggy ground. His tongue lolled out of his open muzzle, eyes bright and ears perked forward. He would feint charging the bigger fox to flush the little vixen out from her hiding spot...unless the big Bloodfeather did it for him.
Closer and closer, Swift covered the short distance between them. Sweeping his tail around as a counter balance, he prepared to make his turn. But would he be close enough to give Brighteyes the urge to bolt? Would he find enough purchase on this soft, muddy ground to keep from sliding head long through the muck and into the bigger fox?
The answer would be seconds away...
Dominic walked along and he had the warmest smile on his face as he heard the romping behind him,
"Keep up you two." He called back laughter in his voice. His strong muscles flexed each time his paw hit the ground keeping a steady pace. He wanted to get to the meeting point soon.
Brighteyes yipped out of surprise as she saw the on coming Swift, charging towards her and Dominic. He had found her! The little fox scurried out from beneath the larger one, trying to get away again.
The wind was still howling, the rain still pouring, but she paid no mind. This was the first time she was having fun and not worrying about the flood for sometime. It wasn't too hard to distract her, she was a kit after all, but nobody and taken the time to do so. Not until Swift.
She tried to keep steady, but suddenly her paws were out of control in the slick mud. She took a tumbling fall, and ended up with a maw full of mud. Sliding to a stop, a bit dazed and confused, Brighteyes slowly sat up and shook her head, trying to spit out the mud.
"Blergh!" She whimpered, her crimson coat now a muddy brown. She momentarily forgot about the pursuit, trying to get the mud out of her face.
Swift watched as Brighteyes bolted from cover. He had been slowing down to give his paws a chance to find purchase on the muddy ground, and this gave him the ability to adjust his course to match those of the little red vixen kit. Then he watched as her little paws flailed out to either side, sending up mounds of mud into the rainy skies. Then she took a header, muzzle first, into the mud her body crumpling and sliding to a stop.
As she propped herself back up and spit out a muzzle full of mud, Swift ran up behind her, drove his muzzle under her tail, and flicked her up, over his head and onto his back with a splut.
"Hang on kiddo, you took quite a tumble." Swift laughed out a series of barks as he trotted forward to catch up with the dark furred dog fox, "I've heard from several vixens that mud baths are good for the fur. Personally, I haven't tried it so you'll have to let us know how it turns out Brighty." Swift caught back up with Dominic and gave him a wink and a smile.
The kit tilted her head in confusion. The only vixen coming to her mind was Cochran. She couldn't see the elegant fox diving into a mud puddle out of her own free will. She had only met Dawntyde for a few minutes, but she supposed the fishing fox, with an affinity for water, might know what Swift was talking about.
