[PGHFurs] Poll: Feb 10 Fur Meet - Ice Skating?
Posted 14 years agoHey folks! I'm always looking for new ideas and places to meet and have fun here in Pittsburgh. I keep forgetting about the Schenley Skating Rink right up the road from where we normally meet on Thursday nights.
http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/pa.....ink.htm#Mascot
Thursday nights from 7-9pm is their "Family Night." Admission is $4 to skate and they do have rental skates available for $2.50. (Hockey Skates are available for rent)
I have a poll up on the PA Furry Forums to see if there's enough interest to follow through with this. http://www.pa-furry.org/node/2028/p.....schenley-skati
I'll give them a call this afternoon to see if mascot costumers would be allowed on the ice during the skate and post an update here with the information they give me.
This could be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to your input.
Thanks!

Fountain Lady considers sueing Mall
Posted 15 years agoOkay...after the debacle with the TLC Furry segment, I stumbled upon this today and...well I think you have to see this and hear her talking about it yourself.
http://news.yahoo.com/video/us-1574.....y-aid-23909987
"I was texting...in the mall...and I fell into the fountain. There were no handrails or anything that I could grab onto to keep myself from falling in. I was so embarrassed."
F'in' lucky she wasn't texting while driving and killed someone.

WPAFW 2011 Update!
Posted 15 years agoHello everyone!
Mark your calendars! This year's Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend will be held Friday September 30, starting at 7pm until Sunday October 2nd at ~7pm. Our Featured Artist is local anthro & anime artist
kyote!
This passed weekend the group kicked off 2011's event with our first progress meeting. As our first order of business we installed
flanowa, last year's Featured Artist, as our new Operations Chairperson. He's the #2 guy for the event and he'll be taking care of Programming and Logistics.
We have secured a contract for Fireman's Park and are in negotiations with the Comfort Inn Pittsburgh North to utilize their meeting room space and hotel again for our event. We will also be opening up a poll shortly to see if there is interest in providing a more comfortable hotel room block at another hotel facility two blocks off-site.
We are taking suggestions of non-profit, 501c3 organizations, committed to the welfare of animals, for the event's Charity in 2011. Currently nominated is Clarion PAWS; A Pet Adoption and Welfare Society serving Clarion, Forest, Jefferson, and Venango counties in Pennsylvania. http://www.clarionpaws.org Currently they are embarking on a capture, spay-neuter, and release program to control the stray cat population in the major population centers of Clarion, Forest, Jefferson and Venango counties in PA. The committee will vote to select the beneficiary of this year's fund-raising at our March meeting.
The committee is also researching how to add more efficiency to the cooking area for Saturday's cook out, thinking about what we can offer up this year for Supporter swag, and the purchase of some basic LED lighting effects to spice up the atmosphere at our dances.
If anyone has any programming suggestions for this year we'd love to hear from you! Comment here or send an e-mail to programming[AT]wpafw.org. If you have a suggestion for a non-profit for us to consider, e-mail that suggestion to event[AT]wpafw.org.
Stay tuned for more news here or on our website at http://www.wpafw.org

FD Cash Bash results...
Posted 15 years agoHey folks! Ashes here and I wish I had better news for those of you who helped me and Swifty out and donated for a Cash Bash ticket or two.
The Cash Bash was last Saturday, January 15th. We had several numbers get close to winning, but unfortunately none of the 27 tickets we sold hit this year.
Thanks again! Your donations will help keep our fire department running and well equipped to handle the broad range of tasks a fire department fulfills today.

[PghFurMeet] Wild Mountain Snow Tubing Recap!
Posted 15 years agoSuccess!!
I wanted to post a thank you to the furs who came out for the meet last night to go snow tubing at Wild Mountain Snow Park at Wildwood Highlands Fun Center in Wildwood, PA. We had nine furs who were able to make it along with another two who met us at Eat n Park and got a table set up there for us.
There was a little confusion as to where to go once folks arrived at Wildwood Highlands, but everyone found their way toward the lighted slopes and was making their first runs down the groomed lanes by 7pm. It was a perfect night and the place wasn't very crowded at all. What started out as a five minute wait for the lift turned into no wait at all an hour later once the young kids and their families called it a night.
The runs were fast and all in attendance can attest to having a great time regardless of the cold. We laughed, raced, ran into small children, and basically let the feelings we had sledding as kids just bubble up to the surface. We're definitely going to schedule this again for next year...maybe in February though so it's not on the heels of the Holidays again.
Spent another two hours at Eat n Park after two and a half hours Tubing, eating and talking. Bob, our server, was a real character but he was spot on his job keeping drinks filled and patiently putting up with the group.
So thanks again to everyone who turned out last night and I'm sorry others couldn't make it.
*hugs*

Vote for the new 2011 Squishable Plush Prototypes!!
Posted 15 years agoSquishable plush are beach ball size plushies that are soft, pillow plush, like the red foxie I got for Christmas.
Each year they create new prototypes according to popularity. Below is a link to their voting poll in which the top 12 critters are considered for creation.

Silaria is really, Really, REALLY hoping that the Unicorn falls into the top 12. Currently it's in the #13 spot behind the chinchilla. She'd really appreciate it if you placed a thumbs up vote for the Unicorn while you're there.

Where: Wild Mountain Snow Park and Wildwood Highlands (near Hampton Twp). 2330 Wildwood Rd. Wildwood, PA 15091 http://www.wildwoodpa.com/snowtubin.....x?x=snowtubing
Cost: Snow-tubing: $14.50 from 5-9pm. (Normally it's $14.95 for a two hour block of tubing.)
Come and enjoy the winter at this local snow tubing park located just north of Pittsburgh, PA, right off Rt. 8 on Wildwood Road. The hosts and organizers of the monthly meet are trying to mix things up and provide other opportunities to get together and have a good time.
Furs interested in Snow-tubing are asked to have proper foot gear and to dress for conditions. They are also required to print out the Wild Mountain Snow Park Waiver, sign it and bring it with them to the facility. (See the link above) Furs attending to snow-tube are welcome to arrive as early or late as they wish. Tubing is limited to a certain number of participants and lift tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis. I spoke with a representative there and they have assured me that week night tubing are only usually sold out on Christmas break week. They do accept phone in reservations up to two days in advance.
Not interested in Snow-Tubing?? We've thought of that too. Wildwood Highlands also has Laser Tag, Miniature golf and a large arcade on site that you are welcome to take advantage of. http://www.wildwoodpa.com
I apologize but ears, tails & costumes are <b>NOT</b> welcome at Wildwood Highlands as they have their own mascot character who may be on site.

2010...My Year in Review.
Posted 15 years agoWrapping up my year with a look back at the notable events which shaped it:
January:
After ten years at the helm of the Babyfur Community I stepped down as Moderator of the Babyfur LJ Community; the culmination of the mailing list which started with OneGroups which was bought out by Yahoo Groups, and then moved SmartGroups after Yahoo deleted the mailing list twice. It marks the start of a move to be less active within this particular subgroup.
February:
The major winter storm that hit the Pittsburgh area and dumped 18" of snow was a major borough emergency which found me crewing the fire station and driving the engine around town to a myriad of small incidents throughout the night and morning.
March:
Firefighter and instructor since 1929, George Sacco passes away at 97.
April:
Our good friend John Jarrett, Dree's husband, passed away when his heart simply stopped. He was 45.
May:
After a year, I bring a new dog into my life. Edan's sister, a shetland sheepdog, named Calamity Jane; but we just call her CJ. It's been a match that waited three years to happen.
June:
My mother is diagnosed with Lung Cancer.
July:
Mom's operation to remove the cancerous tumor is canceled after it is determined she also has cancer in her Lymph nodes. The family is devastated.
August:
Took Sil to see Paul McCartney at the opening event of the Consol Energy Center here in Pittsburgh. The concert rocked and the new arena isn't too shabby either.
September:
Due to Boomer The Dog's antics with the local media over his name change, the fire department skipped me over to move up to Captain because of my active involvement in the Furry Fandom. They further requested that I remove any references to the department within my furry postings and personal websites and Ashes was removed from the role as fire department mascot.
October:
Just after a successful WPAFW of over 120 attendees, Mom went into the hospital from complications stemming from the chemo and radiation treatments to put the cancer into remission. She would be in the hospital for nearly the entire month.
November:
I ran CJ in her first agility run just for the fun of it. We still need a lot of work. :)
December:
I was elected Captain of the fire department!
Looking back at the major events that shaped the year, 2010 was a 50/50; Not bad...but not all that good either. But I will take some positives from the year that's passing. Mom, despite the cancer, is fighting, active and in good spirits; I did manage to secure the Captain's position even after bad local press about furries caused Ashes to get the boot; The WPAFW continues to show growth and success; I still have a job, Sil and I remain happily married and best of all, CJ and I are finally together!! :)
Artistically it was a pretty sparse year and while I created a few written pieces, they were all collaborations of one sort or another. My creative juices went to bringing a particular fursuit character to life this year to the delight of many.
Now I look forward to the challenges and triumphs that 2011 holds.
To all my friends, may your New Year be blessed with health, happiness and prosperity.

Poll 4 Pittsburgh Furs! Snow Tubing outing for January Meet?

Wildwood Highlands offers Snow Tubing during the winter. Thursday night is "off-peak" and the runs are open, so long as the weather is cooperative, from 5-9pm. The evening session lift pass is $14.50 and of course you'd have to read and sign their waiver to participate. They do have a $.50 discount for groups of 15 or more.
Wildwood Highlands is out in Hampton Township off of PA Rt 8 on Wildwood Road. I can ask if costumes would be welcome if anyone is interested.

[EVENT] Pittsburgh Monthly Fur Meet! 12/9 @ Panera Bread
Posted 15 years agoWhat: Pittsburgh's Monthly Fur Meet!
When: Thursday, December 9, 2010
Time: 7-9pm
Where: Panera Bread (Oakland), 3401 Boulevard of the Allies, Pgh, PA 15213
Come and relax with friends old and new; break out your sketchbook and be creative over a warm cup of chai; play cards or other table top games; or open your laptop and surf the net over the free wireless connection.
The meet is what you make of it, so come on out and have some fun with fellow Pittsburgh Area furs! Don't forget to bring and show off your con badges if you have them! It at least helps us know who you are on the inside. :)
If you get there early, start to score us some seating in the area near the door to the back patio and parking lot.

Happy Holidays and hope to see you there!

[PGHJobs] Little Chicago Pizza, Sharpsburg - Hiring!
Posted 15 years agoLocal Pittsburgh Furs,
I saw a sign yesterday in the window of Little Chicago's Pizzaria, 918 Main Street, Sharpsburg, PA "Help Wanted. Inquire Within."
No further information is available as I was just driving by when I saw the sign. Not sure if anyone local is looking for work, but in this economy I figured it wouldn't hurt to pass the word.
Local furs please feel free to pass the word along to your friends.
