A2 Zygon - Retrospective
Posted 2 years agoReleasing my first solo indie game on Steam was a fun and challenging endeavor. Ever since I was a teen I dreamed of releasing my own game. While it may not be some big AAA title, it still was a big accomplishment for me. That being said, it was not without its hurdles, and I made a lot of mistakes my first run.
The game did not get as many sales as I had hoped, and the game was a flop, but I attribute a lot of this to some major mistakes:
-I released the demo far too early, before I added major improvements that would have given it a better first impression.
-Other improvements were added months after the game was already released, which should have been added sooner.
-I did not release the game soundtrack along with the game, which would have encouraged more players to play it.
-The first trailer also wasn't very well made. It was cheap and didn't give a good first impression either.
-I should have added a better discount on release.
All these issues combined held the game back. There are still other complaints like the lack of enemy/boss health bars. I wanted to keep the game simpler, but it seems like people wanted something more.
Granted, I did have a lot of fun making this game, and it taught me a lot. If I were to do it again, much would have been improved. I've been granted a whole wealth of knowledge and experience from all of this. I put a lot of heart into the game's music, and I am glad to finally be releasing the soundtrack next week.
I'm unsure if I will be making another indie game in the future, as I have a lot of responsibilities. I've been working out constantly, and trying to maintain a good sleep schedule. A2 Zygon only took me about a year and a half to finish, but it wasn't without its costs. Making a game takes a lot of effort and commitment, and I found myself having to work all-nighters to get my game released on time.
If I do decide to make a new game, it would have to either be smaller and more manageable, or larger and have the release date stretched to a much later date so I don't end up burnt out. Only time will tell.
As an added note, I deleted my Twitter recently. I didn't find the juice to be worth the squeeze.

A Productive Spring Break

Although I couldn't go to the beach and spend more time outside thanks to the pandemic, this was a fun Spring Break and I learned a lot in a short amount of time. I slept and played a lot of games as well. I am enjoying Half Life Alyx and Pokemon: Lets Go Eevee. I've also been playing the Minecraft mod Advent Of Ascension, which is extremely addicting.

Hey, still alive, and stuff. Also Califur 2015
Posted 10 years agoYo, I'm pretty sure almost nobody will even encounter or read this journal, since I've been so inactive for the past.. year :p.
However, I've decided to write this journal entry just to say that I am still active in this fandom and I still plan to participate in Califur 2015. So if you want to meet up with me I will be attending.
So, what's my excuse for being so absent? Simply, I've had a lot of work to do, and well.. the furry fandom isn't the only thing I'm into :p.
I've been working on honing my programming skills because I am really taking game development and 3d graphics engines seriously. I'm really trying to go pro and I really want to get a job in the field. So far I've been studying and practicing for 3 years in a half, plus college, and I have come pretty far. On top of that, I have been studying for college, and making a whole bunch of 3d models and practicing digital audio. Fun stuff. No really, it is.
And I have also been spending more time in the video game/anime fandom as well. I've been mainly addicted to Deus Ex, and have been playing that game series a lot in my spare time.
Also, I have had to put up with bullshits and stress and whatnot, and I have somewhat matured a bit as a result. I've just become a bit more serious and assertive about how to manage my life and prepare for my future. I'm still fun at parties though :p, so don't worry. The truth is, I'm sick and tired of taking the easy way out, and just let shit happen for me most of the time.
I've been working my ass off on this game engine because I want to make an awesome game/s. It's been my dream to do this, and you know what? I know people say it's hard/expensive/mind numbing, and guess what, I can attest to that. I'm confident enough to say that I can do it. Yes, I have watched Indie Gamer The Movie, yes I've heard about all the horrors of failed game attempts. But you know what, It's what I love to do, and I intend to put my skills to good use, I mean sure it wouldn't be the end of the world if it didn't happen, I mean I already have accomplished quite a few of my aspirations already, and I'm a pretty happy guy who lives in the present. However, making a game would be an incredible accomplishment, and would be a great achievement for me.
Yes, I had to make some sacrifices. I haven't been going to PS, I've rarely hung out with friends, but you know what? My whole teen-hood was nothing but, lazy. I'm making up for that.
So anyways, that's my journal. Just wanted to put it out there. Hope to see you at Califur.
