General | Posted 7 years agoI'm a furry. What do?
What's next?
General | Posted 7 years agoIt's easier to burn bridges and push others away as you slip into your own madness than it is to beg for forgiveness and take the whips.
One has to question if it's worth it to be truly comfortable in your own skin, or to force pity and detach from everyone in the very unlikely hope that they'll pierce through your icy wall with open arms.

Shutting Down and Moving On
General | Posted 7 years agoA year ago I thought making a business for unique furry events was a great idea. Over six months ago that idea came crashing down before the first product even launched. A lot of people were upset and I made mistakes before and during that didn't make matters easier.
I refunded everyone in November 2018 and just moved on. However, I received complaints via third parties that not everyone received a refund. I shrugged it off as drama until doing taxes in April and saw that they may have a point. I contacted the payment processors while checking records and have confirmed that everyone did receive a refund. I then realized that some of the volunteers who needed a connection and paid for half the flight never received a refund.
I never heard from the volunteers since, so a lot was just via third party. However, as of Friday May 6, all five volunteers that needed reimbursement have received such. Starting this week, I'll begin dissolving the business.
I have a lot to reflect on during this time, and a lot to learn. Right now, I feel numb. Because of all the paperwork needed, and the ones I missed that kicked me in the back months later, and general series of mistakes running the operation while focusing on the product, I have no interest in running a business again.
When I posted this on twitter, I had a few comments if FurFlight would happen again. Anyone can do a group reservation on any airline. As that's what most people envisioned FurFlight to be, there's nothing stopping anyone from doing that.
My plan wasn't to provide cheap and easy transport for furries to cons. I never intended Canis Vulpes to be a travel agency. The goal was to extend the convention experience to getting there and back. In the long term, I planned to do weekend events in unique places or cities as an alternative to hotel conventions. The mission was to inspire and encourage creativity and togetherness by going out of the box.
However, when it came to marketing and discussing the idea, and even post-mortem plans, everyone saw this as "making flying tolerable by putting furries in the same tube". I lost a partnership that I spent a year and a half working on during the November scandal due to others calling in as me. While time heals all wounds, given how hard of a sell it was beforehand and how harder it is now, this vision as intended is dead.
Several mistakes I've made include:
Failing to do important paperwork I thought I could wait on, failing to build up a competent team instead of doing everything myself, failing to communicate properly, having a random furry from Seattle do the social media... who also had no intention of taking the flight and disagreed with the concept, later turning the tables during the scandal... overstepping my limits out of fear that "the concept isn't convincing enough", and not setting up a legal team.
A lot I learned along the way and took steps later in fall. However, it wasn't enough to fix in time, and well, some things learned the hard way.
To those who feel I still did this with malice: I'm sorry for screwing everyone up and being a negligent bastard that is now a reminder of the horrors of capitalism. Repeat with me begging on my knees if you wish.
If anything, I found myself more and more unable to see eye to eye. I'm volunteering at cons now, but I feel more distant and wary of opening up for a while. For even if I say the truth, who would listen.
Time heals, and may the events of the past several months and my plans fade with it.

Urgent opening for Commissions! ONE WEEK ONLY
General | Posted 7 years agoSo transparency here...
I'm suddenly between jobs and have dealt with spending a lot of funds on post-mortem business stuff. I'm running short on essentials cash for actually living and need to raise $900 by end of next week.
As such, I'm opening for commissions again. Yes, it's another one of those "EMERGENCY COMMISSIONS BECAUSE FURRY DIDN'T THINK THINGS THROUGH" things. But honestly, it's better to ask for cash and give something in return. Plus, it's good to stretch those art muscles.
Prices are as follows:
* Telegram Stickers: $12/piece
* Icons/headpieces/badges: $12-$20
* Full body Art: Starting at $45
* References: $70+
If you're interested, please send me a note ASAP!
If you'd like to help but can't pay, then please spread the word!

It is done
General | Posted 7 years agoI did my deed, and all should be sated. I'm back to square one, rock bottom, with a hatred of myself and the world and little-to-no way to regain same level or trust nor respect to do what I dreamed or even start somewhere along that.
What now.
What now.
End of a Chapter
General | Posted 7 years agoSo after today I'm no longer part of a furry convention team. It was a very tough decision, but it had to be done.
I loved volunteering for a con and I made so many awesome memories. The people I worked with were among the best and we genuinely wanted to help make a everyone have an amazing time. I am grateful for the opportunity I had, and the skills I have learned along the way.
From being an eager con-ops volunteer, to a programming track lead, to a programming lead on an executive level. It's been a learning curve, but an amazing experience. Knowing full well that the tireless actions you and your team do months in advance directly affect many people's weekend, something that they look forward to for months, and all the memories they make. It's tough and there's a lot of pressure, but it's very rewarding when you see the smiles at the end of that weekend.
This is a mindset that makes me enjoy doing these things, it's the skills and the same philosophy that I took into account when starting CanisVulpes and the FurFlight. Making an event, a convention, any worthwhile experience takes a lot of time, effort, communication and is occasionally a struggle. It is a thankless job, but in the end it's worth it. Thank you Further Confusion, my first furry convention, for giving me the opportunity to work for you. It's been fun, and I wish I could commit as much as I want to and make an even more amazing experience.
If you want to make a change to your con, or want to help your local furry community, DO volunteer. A convention isn't a magical event that just appears with money (okay, that helps a bit), but it's the product of many, many people and months of planning.
Had CanisVulpes not ballooned and taken over my life, I would still be helping out the convention and I know I have many awesome ideas I'd love to take into effect. Unfortunately life had other plans, and so I wish the best of luck. It's been a fun ride, and I don't regret it.

Calling All West Coast Furries! Fun-ness in store
General | Posted 8 years agoOkay, more of this fun flying stuff.
I'm doing some research for reprising things you may already know about later next year, and I'll need your guys' help.
Why such a long lead time? I'm calling the metal birds in March to get things set up, so the more information the better. As such, I've made three individual surveys for three specific geographical areas that just so happen to have a lot of animal people around. Please select from one of the following:
If you live in the Pacific Northwest Region, which includes Seattle, Portland, Vancouver BC, Eugene, Salem, the other Vancouver, Spokane, and smaller WA/OR populaces, please click here.
If you live in Northern California, which includes the San Francisco Bay Area, Napa Valley, Monterey Bay/Salinas, Mendocino Counties, Sacramento Metro area and points north, Lake Tahoe/Reno NV, and Central Valley as far south as Fresno/Visalia, please click here.
If you live in Southern California, which includes Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego counties, points as north as Bakersfield and San Louis Obispo, Imperial Valley, Palmdale, Barstow, and out of state locales such as Las Vegas and Phoenix, AZ, then please click here.
Please feel free to share amongst others in your respective area, as every piece of feedback counts.
If you have already done so, then much thanks! I will take these results into consideration for planning with an official announcement around BLFC! :)

Fur Flight Retrospect (Last Time I'll Mention for the Year)
General | Posted 8 years agoYes, I've been silent. Yes, I spent half the year working on a flight to bring furries to MFF.
Yes it was fun. As I can't mention everything in one journal, it was a major learning experience in organizing and coordination. For those interested, I've made a special site chock full of info regarding how the flights came to be, what troubles had to be resolved, and how the actual flights themselves went.
>>>>>>>CHECK IT OUT HERE!<<<<<<<
I'm kinda sad that my creative side has fallen to the wayside in favor of event planning, but I feel so alive in doing so! I'm going to go through more formal channels to make the next trip, and more fun trips even more awesome, so watch this (or other) space(s)!
and yes, I'll be at FC!

Marfo with a Vloggo (Back from ACool Trip)
General | Posted 9 years agoSummer is midway and I've been silent here.
More travels have happened. I did a two-week long stint out east, exploring New York a bit.
I also managed to do Anthrocon finally, so I can check that off my furry to-do list (only took me like what, 10 years?). Here's a freshly-made vlog review about that whole trip too:
https://youtu.be/pB-RVD7sOq0
More travel stuff, I managed to organize a group flight to and from Midwest Furfest. 50 furries (or 40% of the plane). I'm amazed and excited at getting this done, and hoping that will be an awesome bookend to that con. If you're interested, I have details here. The current block is full and we have a waitlist set up. But, if there is enough demand we can see about expanding the block a bit.
If you want to keep up to date with me in a more consistent basis, you know where to find me.
Until then,
Marf!

Belated Convention Review
General | Posted 9 years agoTFF happened a couple weeks ago... huh... time flies (furries heading to FWA can't).
Con was good though. While not quite the same as my first a year ago, I had a good time!
For full thoughts and experiences, I made a quick vloggo. Enjoy:

I've Been Around
General | Posted 9 years agoYeah... I'm aware I've been absent on the art side of things. Work got me, and I have been reworking Elevations from scratch with the help of a story consultant. No affirmative relaunch date, but it will be better in the long run. I'm still on the fence as to whether or not online publication (via one page a day) is the ideal format.
God I miss drawing; it brought life into monotony.
Meanwhile given an increase in budget and very persuasive incentives from very pure northwestern eskimos, I've been traveling. A lot.
I'm not complaining, though, as I've managed experience things I've never expected to, at all. The wanderlust is high!
I've started a Vlog to capture these moments (something I wish I've started earlier). So far, I've posted two (with plenty to come, because yay another talking human face):
Alaska Weekend - Echoes disappear after two minutes. Iditarod (doggo racing!), snow, old rental stores, snow, ice, snow, beautiful mountains, snow. Honestly an unforgettable journey.
A Taste of Portland - I bring
Ali_Teigar with me to the city of roses for food, drinks, coffee, and puns. One weekend wasn't enough.
This isn't a serious endeavor on my end is honestly more for fun and sharing in the adventures. That said, do feel free to leave feedback and subscribe for more!
Expect to find me at the following locations and cons (feel free to say hi!):
- Texas Furry Fiesta (March 23-26)
- Seattle, WA (April 14-26)
- Portland, OR (May 5-7)
- New York City (June 17-24)
- Boston, MA (June 24-29)
- Anthrocon (June 29-July 3)
- Yellowstone (Late July)
- TBD (Great Fall of Mystery)
- Midwest Furfest (Early December)
If you wish to keep in touch with me, follow me on twitter at @MikeFolf.
Until next time,
Marfle!
