RIP Dragoneer, long live FA
Posted a year agoThe passing of Dragoneer is terribly sad, even more so because of how it happened. I hope that his legacy will be recognized by the community as much as it deserves and brought forward.
I've always been interested in analyzing the furry community and how it changed since the 90s, and the founding of FA was a huge turning point. It marked the beginning of the transformation from a niche fandom into the huge, impactful community we know today. FA itself is the kind of crazy project made by geeks for geeks that nobody would attempt now that anything that looks vaguely like a social has huge upfront costs and expectations. Comparing the history of FA to that of sites like DeviantArt, ArtStation, ConceptArt.org etc. shows that Dragoneer and his team, in spite of any shortcomings, were/are actually very principled admins who never made personal gains a priority nor resorted to the exploitative practices that ruined so many art sites. I never interacted with him as far as I can remember, but I feel he's the kind of person whose positive impact will only become obvious now that he’s gone. Me and thousands of others owe to his vision the blossoming of friendships, relationships, careers. Too many things to list.
RIP, and long live Furaffinity.

Though of course I will keep posting on FA, since I'll forever love the ability to post longer descriptions and comments here.
As a side note I've been silent in the last couple months due to a deluge of health issues in the family (this winter has been terrible, a continuous streak of colds/flu/random diseases) but I'm back on track now. This year I really really really need to focus on more complex personal works that I've been setting aside for too long.

Back to work, more or less
Posted 2 years agoSo is 2022 over? For real? Is it 100% confirmed? Because if it isn't, excuse me if I go back under a rock until it is over...
Seriously though, 2022 has ben by far the most "complicated" year of my life. I can barely remember what I was doing in any given part of it since I've been running in emergency mode pretty much all the time. Among other things: my wife struggled all year with a very debilitating condition; she and our baby got COVID at the same time when he was just 6 months old and the country was in full lockdown; later my aging parents also got COVID and my father developed pneumonia from it barely surviving; I developed carpal tunnel sindrome in both hands; and a number of unexpected renovation works had to be carried out in both our home and my parents' home for various reasons. We all got better and are doing fine now, but it was quite the nightmare ride.
I had decided when our baby was born in late 2021 that in 2022 I'd take plenty of time off in order to take better care of him, yet with all this stress piling up, things got out of hand and I barely managed to get any artwork done this past year. After the couple paintings I completed last spring it's a miracle I could squeeze some drawings (along with a pile of notes and rough drafts for future paintings) into the very fragmented free time I had.
In retrospect this forced hiatus has't been all bad though because it served as a reality check. I collided head-on with all the bad working habits I had developed in the past, when I had both a lot more time for drawing and more free time for reading and pursuing hobbies, and I was also forced to confront all my technical shortcomings, especially the fact that, being self-taught and frankly lazy in a number of ways, I never did the kind of systematic exercises on art fundamentals that help staying productive during difficult times. In the last few months I've prioritized fixing these issues and I've been doing mostly exercises and master studies, especially on composition and color theory which are my weakest points.
Now I'm able to work regularly again, so in addition to going on with the exercises I'm going through the piled up notes to actually get something done. I plan to share more sketches, exercises and WIPs on social media too, maybe as a weekly recap of what I've been up to, since one of the bad habits I need to break is only ever showing finished works.
I'll have to take a break again at the end of February when I'll undergo surgery for the right wrist, and also in May for a long-planned family trip, which is why I won't be reopening commissions until at least June, if at that. But I'm making sure I handle my time better so that a situation in which I completely stop making art never happens again.

Not reopening commissions yet
Posted 3 years agoTime has really flew for me in the last few months, albeit in a good way. Last summer I chose to take a break from commissions in order to complete a number of home renovation works and to stay as close as possible to my wife during the last part of the pregnancy and the first months of our son. In the meanwhile I focused on drawing and catching up with reading books and articles - a fundamental part of my art process for which it's sometimes difficult to find time these days, but always pays off in the long term. I've also experimented quite a bit with board game design which proved a very interesting creative outlet, and while I'm not ready to show anything yet I definitely want to develop some of my prototypes, so there will be more about that in the future.
Now the baby is three months old and doing very well, and I've finally set up my new studio room and I've pick up the brushes again. I had planned to reopen commissions in February but eventually I've decided I won't reopen them for now. Before reopening I need at the very least to complete two projects that have been in the work for a long time. The first is the third book of the Lost Stars series which I'm illustrating. The second is my own Art Book, in which I'm gathering all my best works of the last fifteen years along with insights on my creative process and my vision of furry art and anthropomorphic art in general.
Besides of these projects, the fact is I've been painting almost exclusively commissions and small simple pieces since 2017, and while I enjoy those a lot, I now feel an almost physical urge to paint some large personal paintings again. I have plenty of complex ideas that I had set aside in the past because I didn't have the time or the skill to tackle them, but after all the practice I did for complex commissions I feel more confident now, and and as I go through my notes I'm aching to get to work on those ideas, so that I'll also have something new to show as more art galleries and other RL art venues reopen.
So this is my plan for the next few months at least. (I also have a lot of sketches ready for the small frontal portraits series but those are mostly for warming up or trying out new techniques.) I don't have an estimated time for reopening commissions at the moment, so I apologize to those who were waiting for an opening at this time, as I had answered several inquiries mentioning that I'd reopen them around this time of the year. In the meanwhile I hope I'll be able to at least provide interesting, more challenging personal art.

Life update!
Posted 4 years agoJust a quick update as I haven't posted anything in a while. Everything is going well, I'm just super busy with home renovation which includes moving my studio room to a different place and preparing everything for the incoming baby. On top of this, I and Leto got married two weeks ago! It turned out the best time of our lives but also involved lots of planning and anxiety for everything that could have gone wrong due to the pandemic. All went for the best though and now we're just taking it slowly in order to recover our energies for the next big event: our baby's birth, which is due in late November.
A huge thank you to all those who reached out after noticing the lack of updates, it really warms our heart to be part of such an affectionate community! <3 But no worries, we're doing well! And I can't wait to be back to posting. I still have completed commissions and sketches I haven't posted, I just need to finish setting up the new studio before.

Update on hijacked facebook pages situation
Posted 5 years agoFirst of all, thank you to all who helped by reporting the pages as fake! (see previous journal: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/9555780/)
It looks like facebook hasn't acted on the reporting for now, but anyway this morning I filed an official complaint to my local cybercrime police division, so now even if the page with my name and logo remains online and gets used for malicious purposes I will not be involved at all.
I still have some that hope the hijacked pages will be taken down due to the number of people reporting it, but facebook has proven it doesn't give a shit to solve this kind of issues so it's a really faint hope. I'll keep an eye on the situation for a few more days, and the delete my profile page there and never touch the site with a three foot pole again.

PLEASE HELP reporting my hijacked facebook page
Posted 5 years agoLong story short, my FB account was compromised last week and two pages of which I was the owner and only admin have been hijacked. I have no idea who controls them now and contacting FB support has led nowhere. If you have a FB account, please spend a second to report these two pages as FAKE. I no longer have any control on them and might be used for scamming.
My former personal business page:
https://www.facebook.com/scalerandiart/
Memorial page of a (now closed) local WWF branch:
https://www.facebook.com/wwf.pinerolese/
I'm reporting the page theft to my country's cybercrime police but I'd REALLY like to at least have the page with my name shut down before somebody gets scammed thinking it's me.

Commissions opening on Sunday 28th
Posted 6 years agoI will be opening for May-June commissions on Sunday the 28th of April at 21:00 CET. For this round I will be taking only 2-3 “Studio portrait” paintings (so no complex backgrounds) and I'll most likely work on them in June since there is a cool project I'll also be working on in May - stay tuned for news about that.

Commissions opening on Sunday 17 - new TOS and scheduling!
Posted 6 years agoAfter the troubles of the past year it's time to revamp my commissions handling.
First of all here's my new and more comprehensive Terms of Service. If you have read the document in the past weeks you may want to check it again since that was still a work in progress, this is the final version:
https://tinyurl.com/ScaleCommissionTOS
From now on I'll be announcing commissions more frequently but for few slots each time, and each slot will be completed within a specific month. I plan on opening about every two months the slots for the following two months. This will mean predictable and reasonable waiting times for my commissions and also allow me to better organize my work and decide which kind of commission I'm offering each time.
From now on I'll post the opening announcement both here and on my Twitter ( https://twitter.com/ScalerandiArt ) at the same time. There will be a link to a simple Google form to compile, with just the choice of commission type (see the TOS document), your email and a description field. Followup communication will be through email rather than PMs.
The opening for March and April slots will be Sunday 17 February at 22:00 CET. I'll be taking paintings only this time, 1-2 slots for March and 1-2 slots for April depending on the complexity of requested pictures.
Looking forward to the cool stuff I'll get to paint this time!

Reflections on the past few months
Posted 7 years agoThis year started on an high note and was setting up to be awesome. Too bad it only lasted until to January the 9th when I fell from a horse and broke my drawing shoulder. It took a couple months to recover and such drawing hiatus combined with a number of relationship problems and other health issues that emerged in the meanwhile caused an avalanche of missed personal goals and deadlines. It's a miracle I managed to get the work done in time for the book I and aurllew had been planning for this year's Eurofurence. Other than that things have been rough. I scrambled to complete the needed paintings for the EF art show and local exhibits, and I still have an inexcusable number of commissions waiting in queue since months. I'm very sorry for that. I've never been super productive when it comes to finished works but these last months have easily been my least productive semester ever.
Among health issues the most worrisome one is pain in both wrists, which apparently isn't due to tendinitis but to a malformation of the wrist bones which had never issued symptoms before and is beginning to cause problems with age. It results in slight chronic pain and random bursts of inflammation. It does't prevent me from drawing or painting, but it's annoying for many everyday tasks, forces me to limit use of keyboards, and since I'm already prone to insomnia it messes up my sleeping hours which is about the worst thing which can happen for my ability to focus. There is basically no cure for it except very complex surgery which isn't even guaranteed to fix the problem. So I can only hope it doesn't get too bad. I've been dealing with it for a year and a half now and only lately it has been this much annoying, possibly because of the hot season.
Anyway the hiatus also brought some much needed reflections on my artistic goals. I have grown deeply unsatisfied by some aspects of my art and I feel I need to take a different approach to it. Looking back at my works of the last couple years it feels I've been playing it too safe subject wise and stagnating technique wise... I could write a long rambling list of everything that is wrong with my art at the moment but it's probably better to just write any technical reflections in the newer works' descriptions. The change in approach will be gradual but it already directed some of the paintings I've prepared for EF and will hopefully become more apparent later this year.
I'd still love to reprise my Furry Art Archaeology blog as I still consider the topic an important one. These days there is a staggering amount of great furry art produced, and yet I often thirst for some very specific nuances of naive furry art, to the point I try to let some of that feeling emerge in my own art. With my wrists in this condition though I fear extensive writing will have to wait indefinitely as art gets the priority.
I haven't even been much in the mood of sharing the new stuff in the last few months, although now I feel a bit more social again and I'll be taking care of that.
Well, end of the ramblings. In difficult times I feel lucky to have this wonderful community giving me inspiration and motivation. I hope to completely get past this slump soon.

"Lost Starts" sneak peek

Now, for all of you curious fuzzies, here is a sneak peek from the book!
(…) Glir smiled and gave Wyn a kiss, reaching out with his hand to stroke his member once again. He licked the tiger’s back, feeling his body shaking with pleasure and anticipation as he explored the tiger’s body with his tongue. Wyn raised his tail for him, offering himself to his mate as he felt the other feline’s hot breath getting closer to his rear. He thought he would mount him immediately, but he was surprised once again as he felt the lion’s tongue beginning to lick him gently, making him moan louder than before. The lion smiled, pleasured by Wyn’s deep moans as he started rimming the tiger’s hole, massaging it with his finger as Wyn began to relax. The tiger pressed his back against him, asking to go deeper and willing for the lion to take him. Glir smiled, licking the tiger’s lower back as he pushed another finger in, moving them rhythmically and spreading the other felid’s anus.
Finally, he climbed on the tiger’s back, pushing him down and teasing Wyn’s hole with his thick member. “Ready, Wyn?” he asked, tenderly kissing the other male’s neck.
Wyn didn’t reply, he just arched his back and relaxed as much as he could, growling deeply as he felt the tip of the lion’s pride against his hole.
“Just stop me if it hurts, alright?”
Wyn nodded and took a deep breath as he felt Glir slowly pushing his member inside… He ripped his bed sheets as it went in “God, it didn’t seem so big”.
Glir laughed a bit, gently licking the tiger’s back and stopping to give him time to get comfortable “Well, I’ll take that as a compliment… You know, I heard it from many people, but it never gets boring”.
Wyn took another deep breath, still trying to relax “…And your ego is even bigger” he laughed.
“Oh are you sure?” said Glir pushing himself a bit more inside Wyn, “Because that was just the tip, there’s still much more to go”. (…)
P.S. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to send a note to me or

Important note to current commissioners!
Posted 7 years agoI need to apologize for the lack of updates in the past few weeks. Due to various personal issues I've had to deal with this autumn I was completely exhausted during the holiday season, so I opted for setting aside most ongoing projects. Then on January, just as I was getting back to work, I suffered a fall from a horse which left me with all sorts of pain in the drawing shoulder and difficulty moving the arm. :-P
At first it just seemed to be a strained tendon since the pain was not very strong and there was no swelling or bruising, so each day I was hoping it would fade quickly and decided it wasn't necessary to write a note about it, but that was a mistake since it was recovering very slowly. While I've recovered some arm mobility by now, it turned out that there is a small fracture near the head of the humerus. It's non-displaced so it should heal without need for surgery but it aches constantly and prevents me from lifting and rotating the forearm normally, as well as disrupting sleep and being a general hindrance. It has recovered to the point I can draw and type again but it might take a couple more weeks before I can move the elbow well enough to resume the paintings. In the meanwhile I'm working on the pencil part, so at worst I'll do all the pencils for current commissions before moving on to painting them in sequence.
I'm very sorry I didn't warn about it immediately as I should have - as mentioned I hoped it would get better much faster than this. :-/

Furry fandom economics research survey - update!
Posted 8 years agoPerhaps you remember when I asked for help filling out the surveys of my friend
aurllew for his degree thesis about furry fandom economics. Well good news - he graduated with maximum vote! So a huge THANK YOU to all who helped! :-D See also his journal here:

I hope he gets permission to disclose the final paper and publish it in english, it's quite interesting data and sheds a bit of light on an aspect of the furry fandom which needs a lot more attention as it is growing steadily.

Furry Art Archaeology project
Posted 8 years agoI've recently started a little project on the side of my main blog. Basically I'll be sifting through old furry fandom art from my archives (mostly stuff from the fur.artwork.* newsgroups) and writing some musings and critical commentary about it:
http://furryartarchaeology.blogspot.it/
This is something I've been wanting to do for a while, in part for personal amusement but also to put to the test the art theory stuff I've been learning in the last few years. Apart from the [Adjective][Species] blog (currently on hiatus) and the extremely rare insightful posts on furry image boards I think there is a sore lack of proper analysis of furry art, especially the naive furry art from the early years of the internet-based fandom which has cast the foundations for many of the tropes and quirks found in furry art today. I don't mean technical commentary but more all-around critical analysis: carefully observing the details and deconstructing images while trying to understand the concepts and emotions they were trying to convey, the context in which they were created, the aesthetic they drew upon, stuff like that. That's what I'll be trying to do with the new blog.
Don't expect any freudian nonsense though, like trying to infer an artist's sexuality from their art. I loathe that kind of art commentary and I hope this will become clear along the way.
I hope it will be of some interest for people other than me - I've been surprised myself seeing how even some of the crudest images can yield much more than they seemed to offer at face value. But at worst it will be a fun nostalgia ride for me and a way to figure out what I actually have in the archives.
