I don't care if it makes me the biggest nerd ever, it's so good to hear Sean Schemmel's Goku again. I've already seen the movie, but I'll totally watch it again just to hear the English cast. On that note, give DBZ Kai a try if you're a fan of action shows who's been passing on the series up til' now - It follows the original manga and by so doing cuts out all of the filler and episode-long shouting matches you've doubtlessly heard about. Trust me, I've gotten friends with big flashy science degrees into this shit. It's not just for stupid people like me!

Furries like to jump backward and shoot guns.
Posted 11 years agoI dunno about you guys, but I think animal head people with enormous guns look sort of silly.
He has returned to the wild.
Posted 11 years agoThe little robin became an incredibly large and fat and now takes to the skies! You know the little bastards need to eat every thirty minutes when they aren't sleeping? Ha! You know, I'm of the opinion that no-one should own a bird - Having arrived at this conclusion by owning a grey parrot and witnessing the staggering intelligence of those animals firsthand - but especially don't try to take a wild bird in for any length of time unless you know damned well you have the time and manpower to take care of them. They're a monumental responsibility.
Anyway, I'm glad it worked out but I think I would like for needy animals to stop appearing around here for a while, please. Thank you.

God gave me a baby robin for my birthday!
Posted 11 years agoLong story short, an incident involving a pair of asshole crows has left me with a young robin in the house. He's fairly far along and it should only be a few days before he can fend for himself, thank god. Seems like a pretty cheery little guy. Don't worry, he's getting fed plenty. He's in the kitchen making robin noises at the moment. So cute.
Seriously though, crows are a bunch of murderous dicks. No offense to any present, but c'mon. Why you gotta be pickin' on baby birds?

Dunno if any of ya'll read One-Punch Man, but it's seriously one of the best comics out there right now. Licenseless Rider is my hero!

That special someone
Posted 11 years agoContrary to what my profile page might say, I'm turning 28 on the 9th of this month. Believe it or not, that'll be the oldest I've ever been! It has me thinking about my romantic life - Or rather, my lack of one. I'd like to meet that special guy (or gal, even!) before my youth leaves me. I suppose I've sort of sabotaged myself in this regard what with my tendency to maintain a very small but very close social circle - I'm the type of person who only has best friends. A little while back, I realized that for the past decade or so, this circle has consisted solely of people in whom I've had some sort of romantic interest. So... Yeah, if you're someone I was ever close with, chances are good that I had some sort of crush on you - Sorry about that.
I'm sure you've already sussed out the dark side to this particular social arrangement: Though some absolutely wonderful people have come and gone out of my life, I've probably missed out on meeting twice as many due to my narrow focus. On top of that, be it because of distance, professional obligations or just plain old incompatibility, it's been nearly a decade since I was last able to bite the bullet and ask someone I loved to be mine. I used to be disgustingly promiscuous and free with my time. In those days, I found myself more or less perpetually taken. Who knows, maybe I had it right back then.
Look out, ladies.

You don't look good in a fedora.
Posted 11 years agoIf you are wearing a fedora at this very moment please take it off. Maybe you're a very attractive person. Maybe you're the man of my dreams. You could be, but I wouldn't know. You know why? Because you're wearing that fedora.
Please don't wear a fedora.

Re: Horse Therapy
Posted 11 years agoI guess there are tons of therapy groups out there that use horse riding, training and general being-aroundness to help heal wounded soldiers, sick kids and so on. So the healing power of horses is well established, yes?
This leads into my big question: Why is it that a Horse Priest class has yet to appear in one single game? I am no longer content with salving my tank's wounds with the holy light. He deserves the warmth that only horses can provide.

Favorite games of all time?
Posted 11 years ago1: Earthbound/Chrono Trigger
2: Megaman X
3: Fire Emblem: Awakening
4: Resident Evil 4
5: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Earthbound and Chrono Trigger serve as the standard by which all RPGs are measured in my mind. They're both nigh upon perfect, so I've never really been able to pin down a favorite between the two of them.
Megaman X is a perfectly tuned action game full of gorgeously colorful art that blows away most other sidescrollers on the SNES. It took the solid foundation laid down by the classic NES series and turned it into something really special. Anyone who enjoys sidescrolling action and hasn't played this has homework to do.
Fire Emblem: Awakening is the number one reason to own a 3DS. It's ball crushingly hard at first, but once you start to dig in you unearth a marvelously complex class system that allows for hours upon hours of fiddling and theorycrafting. An enjoyable plot, clever writing and one of the best soundtracks of the last 10 years make this game not just the definitive entry in the series, but an all-time classic. Go look up the OST on Youtube at the very least.
Resident Evil 4 was the best thing that ever happened to the poor little Gamecube and it terrified 18 year old Rifter. I don't know how well it holds up against today's action games, but it holds a special place in my heart just the same. You're smalltime.
The original version of XCOM that released in 1994 was a masterpiece that tasked you with fighting off an alien invasion using nothing but the limited funding afforded to you by the council nations and whatever scraps you could pull out of downed UFOs. It was atmospheric, deeply engrossing, strangely terrifying and completely unrivaled until the recent remake. Go play XCOM: Enemy Unknown with the new expansion right now if you've ever been a fan of turn based strategy. If you're in the mood for something a little more complicated and scary afterward, pick up the original game as well.
I'd love to hear about everyone else's top five! Feel free to comment here or post a journal of your own, it's always interesting to hear about what other people're into.

Underscore is going to endure the terror of a thesis defense today. If he succeeds, he gets to call himself a Legitimate Doctor of Real Science! His victory is more or less a foregone conclusion, so feel free to go shower him with congratulations. You'll never meet a nicer, more selfless hyena.

Anyone remember Dunkaroos?

My computer exploded! Oh no!
Posted 11 years agoThat's the bad news. The good news is that I'm gonna try my first ever build this week and she's gonna be an absolute beast. I admit to being a little bit nervous, though. Thermal paste? What's that? Sounds spooky!
