2013 convention information and what's going on with life
Posted 12 years agoThis year, I am definitely heading to these conventions (in chronological order):
Rainfurrest 6
Midwest Furfest
Orycon 35
So, yeah. If you want to hang out with me sometime at these conventions, let me know.
Now, as some of you know, I'm building my own Second Life military, Koveli Worldwide.
Read this: http://www.kovelisl.com/eontriapr.pdf (it's short)
We are planning on moving to a full sim soon, but I am now running into problems with one of my former militaries, 2142. The person there, Foxmerc, after reading this more than once, was over-complicating what I was trying to say, which is that Koveli will be having a base of operations at Eontria, while we are building our own sim. He assumed they can't counter-attack, and that we have to have permission to raid.
We...have our own base...and we still have to ask to raid?
On top of that, he kept talking about a place to counter-attack and they wouldn't have it. How could you misread that we're opening a temporary base at Eontria while we are building our own sim? The admins at the CC understood, the head admin of Boomtown understood, Mercz understood, Other militaries understood, but you don't understand something as simple as that? I mean, come on. Do you even know 2142's history?
On top of that, do you realize how bad of a choice to have Pancake as your XO for your group's diplomatic division? He is -hated- professionally by almost EVERYONE. All I have to do is bring up his name by any of the leaders, and they groan about him, talking and complaining about him. Seriously, how stupid can you be about that? Especially since he's being a rude prick to all the other militaries, not keeping an open mind, and causing almost everyone to be angry, even nice trolls.
And are you not even listening to anyone else whom hates him? He is tarnishing 2142's name, and ask anyone whom has to deal with him.
I'm now done.

Irritation with some people uploading images
Posted 12 years agoFor god sakes, when you upload, please upload first page first.
But...FA has our messages make the latest submission first.
...Seriously, you haven't checked My FA -> Account Management -> Site Settings to change it to oldest first?
But...that wasn't there before.
Actually, it has been, ever since they introduced newest submissions first. It is an option to make it oldest first. Why the decide to made it the default to make newest submissions first, I don't know.
Does this change the order of journals?
*SIGH* no, it doesn't. Journals still appear newest first.

On a personal matter...
Posted 12 years agoMy damn Humira pen malfunctioned. It wasn't dispensing medication, and when I lifted it, it started to. I had to throw that into the sharps container and order a new one, as an emergency.
I really don't want to do that again, if I can help it. -.-

Comments on the shootings
Posted 13 years agoOk, I'm going to say this. Two shootings this week, the first one in Clackamas, Oregon, in a mall. That weapon was a stolen assault rifle.
Now the one in Connecticut.
Now, my opinion.
We need an early warning system that would help us identify potential problems, as far as mental health is concerned, and go in for early intervention, so we can not only avoid these shootings, but also suicide and other mental health issues.
We do not need more gun control. Gun control restricts what we can get legally, and that is based off of Rational Choice Theory (RCT). RCT is not a valid theory, as most criminals do not use RCT. If they want to get their hands on a weapon, they will find a way, even if they have to steal it (such in the case of the Clackamas, Oregon mall shooting).
Please use this time to advocate for mental health resources, not stricter gun control laws.

Review of prototype games from Double-Fine
Posted 13 years agoOk, if you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about the prototypes from "The Amnesia Fortnight" (not to be confused with the game Amnesia).
The prototypes that you can get include Costume Quest, Happy Song, plus five upcoming prototypes (Hack n' Slash, Spacebase DF-9, The White Birch, Autonomous, and Black Lake) and if you beat the average, 4 keys to Brazen (which the average is at the time of writing $7.12).
Do keep in mind, these prototypes are a VERY EARLY alpha of a game, meaning there's going to be a shitton of bugs.
The feel of Happy Song is that it's an EARLY, EARLY alpha game. I've already uncovered a few bugs in the beginning, including some interface problems, not to mention the controls they show you are for an Xbox 360 controller. For those that play Second Life, if you have JasX's instruments and friends on each instrument, and all of them synced, that's a little better than Happy Song.
Costume Quest is also a very intriguing game. You play as a little girl, whose favorite toy ran away on Halloween, and the goal is to collect as much candy. It's also got an RPG feel, with combat. However, there is a chance you will get stuck in combat.
I haven't played Brazen yet, as that is an online 4 player co-op. However, that is also an interesting game.
Go to this link to find out more about the other prototypes.

Life update (PLEASE READ)
Posted 13 years agoWell, as a college student, dependent on my parents, I have just received word that my father is going to be retiring in November. Due to this, I have limited everything, and I will be cutting back on some things.
Please be understanding.

Hunting
Posted 13 years agoYes, I went hunting, and caught my first grouse.
...and before you all ask, I only hunt for food, not for sport.
Anyway, my shoulder is sore from doing range shooting, and I did miss two other grouse, because they flew away.

Post-Rainfurrest report and Jury summons
Posted 13 years agoRAINFURREST
I am more than likely comped at this time for doing volunteer work at Rainfurrest this year. I haven't been 'fired' yet, as that party is not until later on this month.
If you ever volunteer at any convention and want to see the most interesting night you will have, volunteer for Saturday night, either at ConOps or security. You -will- be entertained and stressed.
Other than that, I actually enjoyed the convention, spent the time hanging out with a few friends, including Azimuth and
kittenj, as well as a few other furries. If I forget your name...I am truly sorry. Blame the lack of B-12 that I am getting due to my surgery back in May (See previous journals).
JURY SUMMONS
Monday after the con, I received a jury summons letter from the federal court system. I have it deferred due to classes, and I will be having it done on December 11, 2012.
Good news, it pays $40 plus $0.555/mile per day. Bad news, I spend part of my vacation time at the courts. Mediocre news, it's downtown.

Rainfurrest
Posted 13 years agoYes, I'm going. No, I'm not going to do a meme.
But I will say what I'm going to be doing.
I'm going to be sharing a room with a friend and a couple of his friends (not going to disclose at this time). I will be working Reg/Security (Already have my registration schedule, no Security schedule yet), and you may see me at Registration, either at the booth or assisting the Cashiers.
Please, please, please, if you have already pre-registered for this convention, print out the AUP, signed, and ready to go when you arrive. It expedite things greatly, (even if it's just printed, it expedites it greatly).

[Commission Idea] Perry Mason-esque commission
Posted 13 years agoI was looking at the 50th Anniversary DVD collection (and yes, I know next year is the 55th), and I was just thinking about how cool it would be to have a Perry Mason-eque commission done.
Now, I do not want to be the only one paying for this, so...if you all have any interest in this, leave a comment.
If you don't know what Perry Mason is, here it is in brief: It's a series that revolves around a defense attorney, whom takes on hopeless cases (a modern-day equivalent would be Phoenix Wright or Apollo Justice), has a secretary called Della Street, a PI that works with him called Paul Drake, and he is usually up against DA Hamilton Burger and Lt. Tragg. The books came out in the '20s and '30s, with radio plays, TV shows, and several movies coming out afterwards (the first movie called "Perry Mason Returns").
Now, I could do it like Apollo Justice or Phoenix Wright, but I actually want to kinda do a modern-day twist to the Perry Mason idea (and that way it would be up to several people).
I'm also thinking possible courtroom scene or maybe murder scene (with an excuse to have the secretary show up).
Anyway, comment.

[RANT] Artists not wanting users to redistribute
Posted 13 years agoBefore I start, no it's not a hit at the artists, it's a hit more towards the users (and suggestions to artists).
It's sad to see people abuse image posting when some of us do have permission to repost (for example, the picture in my f-list, I do have permission to repost from the artist a while ago, but that was a general repost).
I do agree there needs to be a way to streamline (and possibly even mark) multiple offending users as 'moderated,' where they would not be able to post any sort of images at all and get admin permission to post images again OR have any images they uploaded approved before it updates in their profile. I would even suggest making the 'moderated' status apply for all new users, but that may be way overkill.
Also, artists, make sure you have some sort of Acceptable Use terms for commissions (and show copyright/Creative Commons licensing). I even realize if I commission an artist, they may not want me to freely distribute the images (but be aware, if you choose a Creative Commons license, the most restrictive one allows redistribution ONLY).
Link to Creative commons: http://creativecommons.org/
Also note, if I do post new stuff here, unless it's a commission, I am planning on putting it on a creative commons license, specifically Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported or newer, depending on the current version of the license.

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who crossover #4
Posted 13 years agoOk, that total fanboy moment that I had for number 3 was underwhelmed when I read number 4. The talk wasn't as epic as I thought, but I stood back and thought about it, and it did make some sort of sense.
Also...MAJOR STORY TWIST HERE! Not going to say what it is, but you would be surprised. My friend and I were discussing it on the way to his place.
Get it.

Ok, at the end of the comic, something happened at the end of the comic that I thought would happen. Not going to say anything.
So far, this story is REALLY GOOD! Go get it at either ComiXology, at your local comic book shop, or at tfaw.com

Upcoming conventions UPDATE
Posted 13 years agoWell, I know I said I was confirmed for Midwest furfest this year, but I'm sorry to disappoint everyone, but I will NOT be going to Midwest Furfest this year. Instead, I will be going on vacation to a place that I will only disclose to a few people, with my parents, that is actually a place I may not visit in the future, and is on my 'bucket list' as well as my parents' list as well. I hope you all understand about that.
In other news, I'm starting to compile my 2013, 2014, and 2015 conventions. I will have 100% confirmation of my 2013 cons by December. 2014 and 2015...is up in the air, as three of these conventions are dependent on how the voting goes for site selection (and I will not know until at MOST 2 years beforehand if the bid is successful). I -could- be going to either Salt Lake City, Utah (Westercon) and/or Tempe, Arizona (North American Science Fiction Convention) for conventions.
2015, I have already pre-supported the Spokane bid for Worldcon 2015. Other than that, I don't know.

Heading back from Anthrocon + Hello from 10k+ feet.
Posted 13 years agoWell, I'm heading back from Anthrocon right now, on a plane (yes, I'm using the plane's wi-fi to post this). Roomed with
Queldonus and his mate. Was going to have another, but they ended leading me on (NOT going to post the name. They already feel guilty enough as it is and I already chewed them out enough. They don't need more).
Other than a few minor setbacks, I had a good time. Got some art, books, another pocketwatch (practical).
Also saw a few people from the Ordo Imperialis, and hung out with them. Good times happened.
Note to self: do NOT leave wired headphones at home. Use them for the airplane.
I shall be home in about...4 hours, give or take a few minutes. (posted around 2:15 p.m. PDT) UPDATE: I will be home around 8 p.m PDT, due to being diverted to Salt Lake City, Utah
Also, Southwest rules hard! :D

Why I need a new desktop
Posted 13 years agoWell, as most of you know, I'm on a laptop most of the time, and it works for gaming. However there is one problem...
It only has a 250GB hard drive (technically a 320).
I don't want to get an external hard drive and because of the specialized nature of the computer (it has some sort of way to stop the hard drive to keep it from being damaged), it's not easy to get a new hard drive for it.
I don't want to refurb my computer, as it's TOO OLD to be refurbed (got it back in '04) to become a gaming computer. I'm already at the extent of that type of refurb that I need to get a new computer.
My laptop is about 3 years old already, and I'm going to need to start trying to get things set up to where I use my laptop less and not have it on constantly. I'm wanting to make this last me quite a while.

Anthrocon information
Posted 13 years agoWell, yes, I am going to Anthrocon. I will be around and if you have anything you want to be made, whether it be a computer build, website design, business cards for a future convention, or fliers for a future convention, let me know, and we'll talk shop.
I will also be offering at-con tech support if you wish for a modest fee (if it's simple, just a drink or a meal would suffice, more complex, we'll talk).
This will not be your only opportunity to see me in person and have me offer these services.
If you want these services at any time, please note me here or e-mail me at rabbitdude[at]gmail.com

Reality sunk in, wanting computer build
Posted 13 years agoAlright, I need about $900 for the computer build that I want, and sadly enough, when I talked to my mother about getting a new gaming-class computer that I can build, this morning, I found out that my father could be losing his job. He's being passed for promotion once, and they're working him bad. My mother is trying to get a full-time job so we can have a bit more income.
Now, while I can probably get by using my laptop, I really want to be able to use a desktop again, so I can properly sit down at a computer and start working on a full desktop, while having a huge amount of space (right now, I have a 250GB HD in my laptop), plus being able to use my printers again. I don't want to lug around a portable hard drive, because that would be one more thing that I would have to lug around, which I don't want to do.
Here are the current specs for the desktop that I want.
RAIDMAX Altas ATX-295WB Case
Antec EA-750 Green (750W SLI/CrossFire Support)
AMD FX-4100 (3.6 GHz stock, 3.8 Turbo)
COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 CPU cooler
ASRock 970 EXTREME4 (SLI/CrossFireX Support)
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) 1GB GDDR5 (SLI compatable)
Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 RAM Dual Channel
SAMSUNG Spinpoint 1TB HD
LG Black 12X Internal Blu-ray Drive (Blu-Ray 3D-Rom/DVD and CD Burner)
Windows 7 Professional
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM
Now, with these specs, I see this computer lasting me about 5-10 years, longer than my laptop, which may have only 2-3 years remaining before I may have to scrap it. With this desktop, I can probably get my laptop to last longer than the 3 years I fear, and be able to put in a new hard drive when this one goes by the wayside, AND I'll have a networked backup of ALL MY FILES.
I don't know what to do at this point. I really can only get side jobs, and it...really doesn't help that the job economy sucks major...yeah.
At this point, I guess you can say this is my cry for help.
