[Review] Orange Nova Sergal - Second Life
Posted 11 years agoI can say about this SL avatar, I'm not all that impressed with it, overall.
The mesh body requires you to buy clothes specific for that avatar, and you can not use any other clothing to make it fit on it (currently). It does not use the SL physical body, except for the somewhat general body shape.
What really detracts from it is the super-invisiprim body that actually makes the avatar look quite bad, to where it actually removes its own textures. This is a very old technique that comes before mesh, and with this body, one would think they would use alpha layers instead of this old system that makes every avatar and place look bad.
If you were to ask me on which mesh body I would use, I would suggest the VR Painted Sergal, as that actually looks rather nice, and do not have the super-invisiprim look to them.

[Rant] JEEZ, Someone's been busy programming a spambot
Posted 11 years agoI was just looking through the browse, and there's 8 pages of spam of one kind, and then another 3 pages of spam of another kind. If anything FA's registration is hacked, no accounts have been compromised, but with how frequently they're posting and switching accounts, that's what it seems like. It also seems like someone's trying to do a DoS (Denial of Service) attack, but that part could be wrong.
But seriously...why would someone do a childish thing?! Spam from all new and different accounts...yeah.

[Discussion/Rant] Drama involving FA's Project Phoenix
Posted 11 years agoOk, the drama involving FurAffinity's coder for Project Phoenix, involving the rape accusation.
First of all, I'm of the stance of 'show me proof.' I don't mean stuff like what someone said. Show me the police report. Show me something that is court-admissible.
Second, I don't usually say this, but I was accused of rape by an individual whom I will not name here. I consulted with friends and family, as well as talked with the individual, and the individual has recanted their accusation. Both the individual and I are not only on good terms, but are very friendly towards eachother, and we have put that accusation behind us (if you are going to be curious about this and ask, I will not say whom, nor will I state the circumstances. This is one of those leave things be).
As far as FurAffinity goes, do I think the Admin team did the right thing? We'll see.
What's your opinion on the whole thing?

[Politics] FULL PANIC MODE ACTIVATE!
Posted 12 years agoLong story short, my health insurer sent a letter that I received last Friday, dated November 22, 2013. Most of it doesn't apply or I don't care about, but one does...Prescription drug coverage.
Long story short, the booklet omitted two specific categories, "Non-preferred brand" and "specialty." I looked up on the formulary (which my health insurance publishes on their website) and I would have to pay 30% a month of costs.
So, let's see...$2042 retail...10% is $204.20...multiply by three to get 30%...
...
$612.60/month.
...THAT'S A MAJOR ERROR KAISER! >:C That's three times my insurance payment.
Long-story short, I'm contacting AbbVie about financial help with this medication. Can't afford that shit.

[Info] Midwest Furfest 2013 - Arrived
Posted 12 years agoI made it safely here, but I'm going to have to do the hotel shuffle tomorrow. They put me in a single bed room, and I am going to have four people in the room, so tomorrow, I'm going to be working things out.
DESPITE THIS...the hotel did do a few good things, or at least made good on some things. We'll see tomorrow what will happen.
Silver-tongued rabbittaur is back. :D

AMA about Salem/myself
Posted 12 years agoGo ahead, and Ask Me Anything (AMA). However, there are some ground rules.
1.) I reserve the right to refuse to answer a question.
2.) Ask me one question at a time, please (but you can have follow-up questions).
3.) Silly questions are ok.
4.) If you think you have a stupid question, ask. The worst I would do is refuse to answer.
5.) Don't expect prompt answers, but I can guarantee at least a 24 hour turnaround.
So, let the questioning begin.

[RANT] Resize your photos before uploading!
Posted 12 years agoI've seen this happen way too much. People upload photos that are larger than 1080p (which, just to let you all know, is 1920x1080), and expect you to scroll around it or click 'download.' POOR PLANNING. This usually pisses people off, and it gets to the point of "Do I tell the person they need to upload a lower resolution file or no?"
Yes, your picture may look amazing at that larger resolution, but, we're talking about image sizing for a WEBSITE, which, most people don't have anything larger than 1366x768 (source: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/b.....ion_higher.asp ). I know it's only about 25% of all screen resolutions, but come on. Not everyone can afford or use a 1080p monitor, and not all laptops can support 1080p.
Then you have images like this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11990203/ . You don't need to upload an image that is 4092x2893. Also, FA's upload max limit on size (according to the submission site): 1280 on the longest dimension. Images this big shouldn't be uploaded, and FA's policy is actually typical, if not generous, on web image sizes.
I also resize the commissions that I ask for if needed, simply because I don't want anyone to move their screen to see only 1/3 or 1/6 of the image that I uploaded. If they want to see it larger, my attitude is "tough. I get the full resolution picture, because I paid for it. I'm showing it off at a lower resolution because websites lend themselves to lower resolutions."
I know it sounds like I'm an ass when it comes to that, but at the same time, websites -do- lend themselves to a lower resolution (i.e. below 1366 on the longest side) resoultion pictures. Not everyone I know has a monitor capable of 1080p, and even if the picture is larger than that, while the detail is great, I'd rather resize the picture down to 1280 on the longest dimension, to allow those whom have laptops or have screens that aren't able to see the full beauty of the picture at full resolution, able to see the full beauty of the picture at a good resolution.

Uploading old art AND needing server advice
Posted 12 years agoI'm uploading old art that I have, over the next few weeks, that I've commissioned or had friends commissioned, but while FA has the "By you/For you" policy, I'm still going to ask the artists permission to post AND how they want to be credited. Sorry, it's the journalistic side of me.
Also, I'm wanting advice on building a network firewall appliance (specifically this: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/product.....e-edition.aspx ). While I know how to build good computers based on what the specific needs of the end user...I'm not that experienced when it comes to building a server. I know what to build for with a simple file server (concentrate on storage and RAM), but network, I need to know what to concentrate on. Should I concentrate on RAM and CPU? If so, how powerful of a CPU should I get?

Wild Games - an example of white collar crime
Posted 12 years agoWith
PsyKrow and
Marbles giving attention to Wild games and what they did to TotalBiscuit, I thought I'd put my two cents in.
For those that don't know yet, here's TB's summary:
Now, why am I calling this white collar "crime?" Because White Collar Crime is not necessarily illegal, but can and usually is immoral and involves money. There are various kinds of white collar crime, including that Skype virus that also got onto SL and emptied bank accounts (Cybercrime, a part of white collar crime) to congress members profiteering of Leadership PACs (which is legal under current law and rules) (As seen on 60 minutes, broadcasted on October 20, 2013: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50157523n ).
So...what is Wild Games' white collar "crime?" Going after TB's video and censoring his review, because he gave a bad review.
That's white collar crime.

Upcoming projects
Posted 12 years agoI have a few upcoming projects from Joyce Reynolds-Ward, mostly Netwalk Foundations and a few Netwalk sequence novels, but there might be something in the next year or so from a different series. Sorry to be cryptic about it, but it'll be advertised when it's ready.
2013 convention update and 2014 convention plans
Posted 12 years agoAlright, for the rest of 2013, I am going to be going to Orycon (a Science Fiction convention in Portland, Oregon) and Midwest Furfest.
In 2014, this is my current list of definites:
Furlandia 1 (considering Furlandia 2013 as '0' con)
Rainfurrest 7 (Since this year was RF6).
This is my list of cons I may go to in 2014:
Orycon 36
Midwest Furfest
Rocky Mountain Furcon
Now, in 2014, I have two out of the area con slots, one of these slots is remaining (Rainfurrest is the other one). Anyone wanting me to go to a specific convention, even one that isn't listed?
Also, it has to follow these rules:
1.) It -must- minimize my days that I will be gone (Thursday through Monday is ok, but that's the maximum).
2.) Due to traveling costs, it must be in the US (sorry Canada. Still like you all, and I do hope to visit on my current passport!).
3.) Costs must not be too high (ideal situation would involve a room share).
As far as Orycon 36 is concerned, I may not go to Orycon anymore. While it's a fun convention and I don't have to work it, it's kinda gone downhill, and I actually work at a bigger convention now, one that is twice as big as Orycon, at least (Orycon is about 1k).

[Politics] Medical money I've saved due to the ACA/Obamacare
Posted 12 years agoOk...Truth time.
$312 is what I'm currently paying for health insurance. Combine that with my current dental plan, it's $362/month
Now, paying $25/month starting in 2014 for dental, that lowers it down to $337/month.
I just got my medical benefits...and it's LOWER than that even.
How much?
...try about $100 for the plan they want to put me on.
Yeah...Saving $125/month...
Go figure, huh? :3
However, I'm going to try for another plan, which is $262/month, but better for me in the long term.
So, lowered my total insurance bill by $75/month (if I get the plan I want), paying $287/month. Annual savings: $900/year
EDIT: Forgot to add price of prescriptions. Add another $10/month savings, so annual savings comes out to be $1020/year.
Is the Affordable Care Act evil? Or is it working? You decide after seeing this.

[Politics] Dental money I've saved due to the ACA/Obamacare
Posted 12 years agoSo far, when it comes to bills, I'll be saving about $20/month on dental insurance. I am not sure about my health insurance, but we're looking at an annual savings of about $240.
Dental Insurance will be Moda Health Delta Dental EPO (Can only use PPO network dentists)
So, for Dental insurance, it'll be $25/month, with Exams, X-Rays, Cleanings, Sealants, and topical fluoride fully covered, Space maintainers and restorative fillings 80% covered, and everything else covered at 50%, as long as I am in network (I would have to pay full price for out of network).
So...yeah. The Affordable Care Act really does save you money, despite what Republicans may have you think.

Rainfurrest 6 (2013) post-con report (Detailed version)
Posted 12 years agoThursday:
After a long drive, myself and my roommate arrived at Rainfurrest. We got settled in, went to Reg with our paper forms printed out, and got expedited through the line. Afterwards, I went on shift, then after shift, I went and had dinner with
BlazeArctic at the local Thai place (good food), came back, and relaxed the rest of the evening.
Friday:
Started doing more security work for the con for a while (after Breakfast at Dave's Diner), then did a panel on Self Publishing with two others (whose names I will put in here later). Hung out with BlazeArctic again, had dinner, and went on security again, before heading to bed later that evening. Oh, and that evening, had some noisy neighbors as well in the quiet area of the hotel (and no, I did not call hotel Security).
Saturday:
Had breakfast in the hotel, went on shift. I had a bit of drama happening with my roommate (don't want to discuss it. Those of you that are aware of it, please don't talk about it), but it got resolved (or so I thought). Hung out with
KittenJ and had lunch with her. We got a joint commission from
Flinters, which I will try to post here soon. Met
Artica and
suntattoowolf until the wedding for Damien St. James, which was a quick, nice ceremony at the convention (Gene presiding there). Hung out with Kitten more before she had to leave. Had a quick dinner that evening, before going on shift. Went straight to bed afterwards.
Sunday:
Breakfast in the hotel again, checked out, and just relaxed for the rest of the day. Hung out with KittenJ to pick up the commission from Flinters and other commissions she had. Had a panel about Writer's block with two others, one of which was a last-minute substitute (and thank-you Kitten, Artica and suntattoowolf for being there). Had lunch with Kitten, Artica, and Sun, before hanging out with them for the rest of the day, until closing ceremonies. I had some staff stuff to do, before leaving...and had a bit of drama before leaving involving my roommate (again, not going to get into it, nor going to say whom it was).
Other than the drama, I did have a fun time. Hope to see you next year or at any future con that I am at.
If you want to meet up with me at a convention that I am attending, please don't hesitate to contact me through FA notes or through other means. Just don't be creepy about it, please.

[Commission idea] Courtroom commision (Shared-cost)
Posted 12 years agoI would like to get a commission of a courtroom setting with a few of ya. I would like to know whom all is interested in such, before I go seeking out an artist to do this commission. This would be a US-Style courtroom, and I'm thinking a civil case, not a criminal case.
Places are:
Judge (1)
Court Reporter (1)
Bailiff (1)
Plaintiff (optional, minimum 1)
Plaintiff's Lawyer(s) (1-2)
Defendant (minimum 1)
Defendant's Lawyer(s) (1-2)
We may be able to add in more people as well, but right now, I'm curious as to whom would be interested in this idea. And yes, I will be in this picture, but I haven't decided where.

To all my new watchers and explanation of this account
Posted 12 years agoThank-you for watching me.
While I don't always post my commissions, I do favorite them. I am working on uploading all of the artwork that I commissioned after receiving permission from the artist and from anyone involved (because copyright and how some artists are about reposting their stuff, even if it's your own character). I do have some artwork that I will not repost, due to requests by the people involved or by the artist themselves. In which case, if it is posted somewhere else, check my favorites or I will link them in a journal.
I may not post anything that I am commissioned for, due to FurAffinity's format limitations (and, in most cases, copyright and distribution issues, like the Netwalk Sequence and Netwalk Foundations series). However, if I do write, and I do once in a blue moon, I will be posting links in a journal OR submission for download (because why don't you support or convert/create other formats, FA?). I prefer distributing my free stuff in ePub and KF8 formats (which you can download the readers online, and they're all free).
I mostly do write journals, with most new ones tagged with the nature of the journal, and it'll be obvious about the subject. If you don't like to see that particular subject, you can ignore that journal. If you would like to do a rebuttal against me, please, keep it civil. I do occasionally talk politics and I welcome another view if it's kept civil (meaning no personal attacks, please).
I may post many journals in one day, or I may post one every so often, but it depends on what is going on at that time.
[Video] Nostalgia time
Posted 12 years agoI found a rather decent dubstep remix of a song that I would be fine listening to. It's a Pokemon dubstep remix done by Lindsey Stirling and Kurt Hugo Schneider.

Saturday - Hung out with
KittenJ, then met
Artica and

Sunday - Hung out with

for the rest of the con, with one last panel that I was scheduled to do (Thanks you two for showing up), before making the drive back home.
