In the Shop: Etsy Shop???
Posted 7 years agoOk its a two parter here.
Recently I got a chance to collab with a maker on Etsy on making eyes for a special project they are working on. I can't divulge too much (All Hail the NDA overlords XD), but its going to be amazing from what I can tell. I just got a brand spanking new eye mold done that would allow me to cast pairs of eyes, rather than singles. :D
While working on the details of said collab, I felt inspired to start creating some horror themed sculpts that I might offer on my own Etsy shop in the immediate future. I might also consider sculpting commissions as well, since I'm already planning on larger and larger sculptures to be built soon. This would include anthro and furry themed items as well, so if anyone is interested, I'll be posting details as soon as I have something. The commission prices are To Be Decided at the moment, I'm still working on getting the proper stuff up :D.
Anyway, that's what's been happening so far. I have to make a list of things to keep track of what I'm on currently as I have several projects going at once. Oh boy XD.

In the Shop: Mail Carrier is going to hate me XD
Posted 7 years agoSo I got essential stuff coming in over the next week or two. And the mailman is going to straight up punch me in the face because it's going to be nonstop little packages XDDDDDDDD. Sorry I tried to get everything in shot, but that's not how it's shipping.
Oh boy. *heavy sigh* XD So yeah, I'm getting a bunch of art supplies thanks to some clever shopping on my part. I also saved a bit on some tools I likely could have made here from the spare guitar string I have lying around. I have to get down to Walgreens for some CA glue before I start changing things out. This way I'm not struggling with plumber's putty like most homemade sculpting tools are made. Put a drop of CA glue (superglue) into the tube, then crimp it shut! Bam instead sculpting tool :D.
Ok, I have to mark my calendar. I have plans to build a new sculpting table as well, so I have to work on that too XDDDD.
Oh boy. BRB

In the Shop: Getting closer
Posted 7 years agoOk folks it looks like it's go time for me. I've been working hard lately to get supplies in and I just received my new airbrush this morning and I have a few more orders to get in before I head off to bed. I have more hair coming in, so I should have some nice cyan/turquoise hair in stock.
I have a few sculptures planned out that I want to make and possibly mold within the next month before it gets too cold. I got some much too XD. This all includes building a new work table for me to start sculpting larger items on, likely within the next week I should have at least the table top.
Ok I have a few more orders to put in before bed. Be back soon!

Format Changes Ahead
Posted 7 years agoAs some might have noticed I'm posting sculptures as well as drawings. I'm a mixed media artist mostly offline because why not? I feel like I want to share a bit of everything amazing I'm doing besides drawing my favorite ladies of course ;). I'm not giving up one medium for another, rather I want to showcase my range of awesome.
I do hope you are enjoying my latest works as I progress. I'm hoping to have more sculptures up soon and hopefully some more permanent works as well. Currently I'm working toward getting critical supplies I need to make eyes for future endeavours, possibly for custom commissions and even as part of custom sculptures I'm making. My current materials won't allow a clear coat like the acrylic ones, but looks promising if I can't get access to the tools I need. I'm still lacking a pressure pot to ensure a clear casting.
Furthermore I have a few new eyeforms planned that I may or may not use my 3D Printer to print out. I'm undecided since quality is an issue that I must address. This includes a massive 5 inch diameter creature eye with a corneal bulge as well as a few other features I'd rather show than mention here ;). Anyway, I'm working diligently behind the scenes on various things at the moment. I'll be posting what I can when I can for the time being. I'll be back to drawing soon as well, I have a few concepts I want to draft.
Thanks for stopping by!

On Eyes
Posted 7 years agoI've had a few inquiries about the eyes on my page. They are samples I've completed, though I can create more. Likely I'll be on demand since they require a few dozen steps to complete depending on how big an eye you need. The easy part is casting the base, the really tough part is painting and final clear coat. I've had someone remark that they are expensive and it's because they are real easy to mess up, especially if you get an air bubble close to the paint job, then I have to grind it down without damaging the paint and recast the clear coat.
Each set or individual eye is hand painted from beginning to end, I don't take short cuts because I want to create a unique pair everytime, so not two will be exactly alike. That process is very delicate takes the most time again depending on the size of the eye. Smaller human eyes I can punch out likely in a day if they aren't too complex, larger ones for like fursuits might take a few days to complete.
The second challenge is the clear coat, which can make or break the eye. With early materials I had access to I had to take extra care in this step or I got a foggy eye or some other weirdness. So this part is also very time consuming especially if I don't get the clear coat right. Polishing doesn't take too much time, but I like to get a shiny eyeball :D.
I can create custom sizes, that's no problem. I'll have to work out how to mold them and a few other things. So if I quote something that feels out of range or quite high, it's because of all the work I put into making them look as real as possible.

Progress Updates
Posted 7 years agoI'm close to completing my studio space and I'm excited. I finally got my moldmaking supplies and other shop essentials in, so I'm pumped up to get things going. I even got a storage space setup to hold unfinished and finished part I make. I just have a few more things to arrange before I finish up.
I also heard my friends in the Hawaiian Islands are hoping to steer clear of trouble with hurricane Lane. I'm hoping they'll be spared that beast because its up to a Cat. 5 and it's huge up on the recent radar. The weather service says it will likely weaken before making landfall, which is a hopeful sign. Likely it will downgrade or swing off into the pacific with little fanfare.
Personal life updates, my brother's treatments have gone well! In fact they were able to knock out more than 90% of the cancer and he's almost there. Just one more week of treatment and he's free. Thank heavens. I'm hanging on and getting things knocked out with my financial situation and already have my first payment toward my loans ready to go. It's a bit of a struggle, but I had planned ahead while I was there on how to get things going. I think that most college kids don't think that far ahead about how they will repay their loans.
I had to figure ahead to split up the cost across my paydays which helped because I can knock out the payments by the next payday rather than doing it all in one shot. It might take a bit, but its the easier way to do things without trying to go the full amount each time. This always allows me a small budget to get supplies by splitting up that each payday as well daily needs like groceries, etc.
So far so good. :D Hope all is well with you :D

Eight Years Already?
Posted 7 years agoSo it's apparently be about eight years of me being an artist in my free time. I think 2020 will officially be a decade since I started anthro art in 2010. So yeah it's been a heck of a ride. I'm already thinking ahead to try and do something special to commemorate my 10th year as an anthro artist.
I might do a YCH for that occasion if I can get my process down since I fell behind or overcomplicated simple ones. Or maybe I could do a pinup special for the occasion. I'll think of something since I got one more year until then. Maybe do an artpack, kind of greatest hits of my work?
Anyway, sounds like a plan is coming together. I might start early and start working up to that point. Anyway, hope you all are doing ok out there. I hope to be back in the saddle soon. :D

Updates
Posted 7 years agoI've been away for a bit recovering from an injury and we lost our grandpa last week to a heart attack. I wasn't able to attend the funeral due to work being short handed and my brother being in chemo. I'm surprised he went afterward, especially with my uncle having pneumonia, though it's likely he didn't go.
From what I've heard there was more drama than anything, I'd rather not mention it. It's been a crazy week here and I'm hanging on as best I can. We have so much going right now, including my mom moving back from another city and it's been crazy.
I'm just ready for a break.

Health Update
Posted 7 years agoOk recently I've had some back troubles which were diagnosed as sciatica from an X-Ray. Despite the treatment my leg continued to numb out and my ankle feeling like it would explode. Worse I couldn't sit for long periods without being in EXCRUICATING pain. So I wasn't able to draw much during my downtime let alone sit at my workstation long enough to.
So still in pain I went to the E.R. and they went through a series of tests. A CT Scan revealed that my spine was ok, there was no "arthritis" and the nerve crushing pain was in fact a bad sprain in my lower back. Worse I think I was very dehydrated since they put me on an I.V. pretty quick, so that might have contributed to my ill feeling and the joint pains I was experiencing.
Anyway, I'm almost back to normal and I'm grateful for that. I can't wait to start drawing again.

Injury.....
Posted 7 years agoSo about 2 weeks prior(?), I pulled a muscle in my lower back and I've been in excruciating pain ever since. I thought it was a dislocation again and treated as such, applying heat and such to calm the muscle to pop my femur back into the hip, but it wasn't.
Finally it got the point I could barely walk again, I was hurting so bad I finally drove myself to the E.R. The pain would get super bad and I had literally lay down for a few hours until it passed long enough for me to get where I was going. I couldn't drive to work without a pit stop and denting my car some more because the pain got to the point I was punching things to take my mind off it.
Finally my leg would numb out and feel like it would explode at any moment just sitting at redlight for a few seconds. It was brutal. So one expensive doctor's trip later, I was standing there as a nurse stuck a needle in my back to calm my sciatic nerve which felt like it was on fire. Heck it hurt worse than the needle! Once done I had to undergo an X-Ray and a test for cancer since my little brother was diagnosed recently.
The cancer screening came up negative, thankfully, but the X-Ray showed something more going on. The doc said it looks like I might have arthritis in my lower back, which was a shock to me. I can't say for sure that's what it is until I see a back specialist, but it does have me concerned. So I'm looking to start improving my life a bit and taking care of myself a bit better, including my work station. I'm looking at getting a chair with lumbar support since that's where the X-Ray revealed some possible trouble.
So what does this mean for the future? I'm still going to be pumping out art as best I can. I don't think it would change much, but I'm working around any possibility now to help improve my chances of doing things a bit easier for myself. I intend to keep on going as best I can. So I hope to be back in the saddle again soon, I'm working on getting that spasm situation resolved so that I can get back to what I love most :D.
Take care out there!

Anyway I'm going to be working on something I've always wanted to do was fluorescent paint on canvas. I'm digging out a personal sketchbook for this one as I planned on selling a few actual canvas painting at one point, for now it's just for fun. I'll post results later, for now I have to black out the canvas for maximum effect. Be back soon.

Happy 33 to me!

Good news Ahead
Posted 7 years agoSo my brother begins treatment soon which is good and we will be busy helping him out. Other good news is that surprisingly after nearly 8 years on DA I sold my first print. That was a quite a surprise because I haven't really checked up on DA in a bit.
Also my B-Day is coming up on the 21st, so I'll be about 33 this year. Also I'm out of my cold which is good, because I was coughing so hard it hurt. I might have bruised a few ribs in the process as well. I drank a coldbuster tea, which is a combination of chamomile, mint green tea, lemon juice and natural honey. Man in about an hour I was feeling way better. I can actually breathe again and my ears are stopped up to the point I can barely hear. Eve my dizzy spells are gone, which means my equilibrium is back :D.
Yeah it's been a good day.

Current Events
Posted 7 years agoWe are still waiting on my brothers situation as doctors are looking into the pathology of the cancer, in the mean time we are hoping for the best.
That aside I got a job starting Tuesday, I'll be mostly dealing with furniture and such, but it's a paying job for now. I just got done budgeting my first major project and it was a challenge. I had to figure out way ahead of the curve what I'll be needing and at what point.
This is a departure from my usual fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants methodology as I'm more focused on the end result now. It's obtainable despite what I've been told about my crazy ambition, but I'll get there. So I might be traveling a bit for supplies, since Dallas has a better market for art stuff I'm needing.
The best thing is I finally have an end goal to look forward to and know how much time I'll have to invest in it to get there. Especially now with summer here, the sculpting process has been a bit of a pain will my clay melting >.<. I hope to resolve that soon as well.
Anyway, hope for the best.

Updates
Posted 7 years agoSo recently my brother has been diagnosed with cancer. They did find evidence of it in his blood, and now the scans show that it spread to his stomach. He will be undergoing treatment soon enough thankfully, and we should know more about what state and kind of cancer he has. We are hoping for the best for him, and surprisingly he is in good spirits which has helped a lot. I know my family is taking it hard, my ex stepdad ran to the chapel after hearing the news. I've been trying to keep a positive outlook for the most part. It's all my brother has asked for.
So I'm staying optimistic about the whole thing. We can fight this thing, because he as three sons I want him to be there for. It's been a trying time for everyone and I'm just hanging on to hope. Granted my sleep pattern is off now, I've been doing everything I can to stay positive during this trying time. We got to keep on going.
I'll be back soon enough with more news on how things are going, hopefully with more awesome arts.

Tomorrow is D-Day
Posted 7 years agoMy brother is going into surgery tomorrow, we are all hoping for the best. All the family will be there and our cousins will be babysitting my young nephews while my brother is in surgery. Alright I'm off to bed, we have an early appointment tomorrow.
Feels good...
Posted 7 years agoto be doing art again. I've had a rough week as of late and it's helpful to be creative in these tough times.
:(
Posted 7 years agoSo I found out yesterday my younger brother was in the hospital and they found a 4 cm mass. He's only 30, he's too young to be dealing with something like this. So yesterday we were trying to leave Kermit to get back home to see him. It was a pretty tough drive, my mom was feeling a bit panicked and the road back from Kermit is not the best to be driving on. It's tons of semi's and oilfield trucks, and the hogs are out in force, especially at night when they try to cross the road. So it was pretty hard.
So far we don't know for sure, but they say it's cancerous but not what kind until the biopsy. We are hoping it's benign and that my brother will come away from this ok. I don't what to feel at the moment, he's my only little brother and I'm scared on the inside for him.
My mom is scared too and been having troubles at work, so that hasn't helped the situation. All I know is that I'm hoping for the best for my little brother. I'll report more when I know something.

*Gears Grinding*
Posted 7 years agoJust a quick update on things going on behind the scenes. I'm making progress toward an idea I've had for a bit and I'm quite happy with the progress being made. I hope to share more of it when it becomes available, right now I'm working out details as usual.
I did have success casting blank eyes as of late, and I currently have at least close to two dozen eyes in all sizes ready for painting. I might be able to get more out of this resin I have currently, so the prices might be more affordable than when I was making them from the other materials, especially the 2" (54mm) ones. I'll be working on that as well.
For now I have several practice sets to get good at painting them up again, which is always fun. So far so good, that's all for now.
Cheers,
- R.

Disaster Exercise Complete!
Posted 7 years agoAs mandated by the FAA, the Midland Airport completed it's 2018 disaster drill with flying colors. I was on the front lines making up people and even soldiers who volunteered to help look like victims of a bad crash. I got few pictures from the event as we were busy cranking them through, it's was wild! Unfortunately due to the heat, its like 80 (million degrees) outside and some of our makeups melted during the triage XD. But so far so good, the medics were impressed at how real it looked. Even the nurse I created a broken neck piece for was impressed by the level of detail I tried to put in during the whole mess. I was on TV, but only briefly walking in the background to the food table XDDDDDDDDD.
Anyway, it was a blast! WOOOOO! Time to nap, because man I'm beat.

Updates
Posted 7 years agoSo the job situation just improved as I will be attended a meeting for a disaster simulation in Midland tomorrow night. I'm packing up my portfolio and going in prepped to help make this simulation look as real as possible. Saturday is the big day and I have very little prep time to make this happen.
So my shopping list has grown a bit in the recent days as I'm going to be making fake blood and hopefully locating latex before the end of the week. I got a lot of wounds to create and very little time to get them done. It's like my first disaster simulation, 3hours to prep and process my potential "victims" and "do-well's". I'll know more at tomorrow's meeting, so hopefully I'm not too far behind as I found out late. Well all the best right :D.
To my local furries, if anyone knows where I can find theatrical makeup, please let me know. I really need to find some latex ASAP and I really don't have the funds to have it shipped. Thanks a bunch!

In the Shop: Eyes on you!
Posted 7 years agoSo far so good on the current state of the studio. I located and measured out the molds I have available for making eyes, then listed them below:
I do plan on making a 100mm (~4") creature eye available once I get it properly molded. Prices are currently being decided while I get materials that are available to start, they will get their own chart once the test runs have been completed. Feel free to comment below any questions or suggestions.
* 26 mm (~ 1") - Human scale - 2/3 Round
* 30 mm (~ 1 1/16") - Large, Fantasy Human - 1/2 Round, Flat back only
* 32 mm (~1 1/14") - Larger, Fantasy Scale - 1/2 Round, Flat back only
* 54 mm (~ 2 1/8") - Largest, Creature - 1/2 Round, Flat back only

In the Shop: Concept Art
Posted 7 years agoWorking on concept art for a few new characters for a project of mine in my spare time. It's been a hectic time since I got back with my mom moving out for work over an hour away, and helping her move in, though I feel my muse is shaking me to get back to creating. XD
I've been working on many small things, including 3D digital models and a slew of speculative parts for the time being. Been a busy little fuzzbutt this past few months. That aside I'm polishing up my resume to start looking for work locally while I build up my studio. I have a unique skill set and I might be able to break into the medical field as a potential in, which is a win because I like helping people and I can pay off my student debt. So I have a few ideas on where I want to work, so locating a job has become the top priority.
Alright, I'm off to dinner, be back soon with more news and possible images of work :D.

In the Shop: Anatomy lessons
Posted 7 years agoSo while watching a movie today and doing some digital sculpting I found myself fumbling to remember what I was taught for a moment. It's been a rough two months and I admit I haven't been in the best of moods for art, but I gave it my best shot. I would wind up scrapping several sculpts after the face failed to fall together, when it dawned on me what I was doing wrong.
Usually when I'm working on anthro's, my first thought is to establish the muzzle then the eyes which is my usual routine. This is what I did on the sculpture only to find it wasn't working or things were out of proportion. Even the muzzle itself would be too narrow or too long and thin, or just look generally out of place. I suddenly realized that I was making a rookie mistake of not establishing the major forms and following through with the details. In this case, the eyes. I didn't establish where the eyes go first, which is a key landmark of any face. Once they were in, the rest of the face fell in sync with the rest of the established anatomy. So I went from wonky-possibly-cat-mouse-cartoony-thing, to a more fleshed out catlike anthro. I'm even getting better at fleshing out the nose of the anthro cats to look more natural which is good.
So eyes are super important in making art awesome. I did a sketch using my new found technique and it works! The whole darn thing fell together in a way that is much more logical. So now my work looks a bit more finessed ^^. So happy :D
