MFF's new hotel (well not exactly new, since it was around for last year too) is absolutely fantastic. I love the mathematical, almost brutal design of the interior atrium of the hotel. Then it has philodendrons lining everything in the atrium, which is an awesome contrast to the unforgiving and cubic-linear design elements otherwise. The abundance of open space makes mingling / running into people so much easier than it was at hallway con (mff 08/09). Also less of me wanting to kill people for blocking hallways being awkward :3

Anyway, particular highlights:

(*) Serenading the incoming stretchers with strange Tetris piano duets with  KattyWampus in the wee hours of the morning.

So I've been touring Europe for a while playing concerts with my laptop orchestra and it's pretty intense.

Currently I'm in Hamburg.

Tomorrow I leave for Amsterdam (I'll be there for 5 days) and then I head to Paris for 2 days and then Oslo, Norway for 2 days. :)

I'm going to start posting these little math puzzles. There's no prize or anything (yet) but they could be fun, so you should try to figure them out :)


March Math Puzzle: Avoid Bad Words!

In an arbitrary alien language, it just so happens that every curse word transliterates into the English language such that it contains an even number of the letter "A."

Note that a word of length zero vacuously contains an even number (0) of the letter "A." There is a single word of length zero (no characters whatsoever).

Now consider words of length 1. If the word is "A", then it does not contain an even number of As so it's not a curse word. But if the word is any other letter, then it contains 0 As, which is an even number of As, and since there are 25 other letters from which to choose, there are 25 curse words of length 1.

(1.) Find a formula for the number of possible words of length n, where n is the length of the word after transliteration into English, which are considered to be curse words in this alien language. The formula should be a function of the length of the word, and should work for n > 0.

In the same alien language, there are words which seem to have some sort of magical powers. It just so happens that every one of these words transliterates into English characters such that it contains an even number of vowels (A,E,I,O,U).

(2.) Find a formula for the number of magic words of length n, where n is the length of the word after transliteration into English, in this alien language. The formula should be a function of the length of the word, and should work for n > 0.

Notice that if a word happens to be a swear word and contains no> other vowels, then it also is a magic word. In this language, these are considered to be a special class of words with evil effects when uttered.

(3.) Write a formula which gives the percent of curse words of length n which are also evil words.

That means they're going to let Joan Rivers out of her cryochamber!

They only thaw her out once a year, so it should be a good time.

So, my car is currently stranded in the Jefferson National Forest.
Here's how, and it basically boils down to jackals having failure superpowers.

There was a shelf of ice, and I decided it would be an excellent idea to see how much of a beating it could take before it broke. So, I stood on it, and kicked at the edge til the edge of the shelf started to crack...not realizing there was a crack forming on the other side of me, too. So, eventually, the ice shelf collapsed, sending me sliding down. My hand was in my jacket pocket, along with my keys. I threw out my hand to catch my balance to avoid sliding into the water, but my keys got caught on the zipper on the arm of my jacket. My keys went sailing somewhere into the water, and since it was fast moving, probably rushed downstream.

We looked around for them for a while, but no luck, so we continued our hike (this was only like, 15 minutes into the hike) and called someone to come pick us up.

Oh well, I have my spare keys, I just have to go back out to the National Forest to get my car >_>
