Portrait or not to portrait?
Posted 3 years agoHmmmm….
When my father passed in February, I was thinking of having a portrait made (only because I am not that good at them myself).
But, with a itch to get back into painting (work and helping to care for my 87 year old mom keeps busy) it’s been a hobby that’s been in neutral for too long.
So I’m going to give it a shot.

Great week. Extremely great week!
Posted 3 years agoHad my yearly review at work:
• Nailed 90% of the required categories;
• EXCEEDED in the other 10%!!
• Received the BIGGEST RAISE I’VE EVER SEEN!!!
OMFG ! Plus a stipend for being with the facility 5 years!!
My head is still spinning.

Telescopic update!
Posted 3 years agoBought a used CGEM telescope mount in order to improve my astrophotography.
Finally got the telescope removed from the original fork mount, and installed the dovetail bar that’ll hold it on the CGEM. I also got my Polemaster alignment camera, which will assist in a true polar alignment, and greater tracking precision for photos.
Yay!!!

Teeth update… better than expected
Posted 3 years agoWell last Friday I had a root canal on the cracked bicuspid. Turns out that the crack wasn’t as deep as suspected. The root canal was successful, and now I have a new porcelain crown on it.
Thank goodness!
Now I have also had a problem with the middle finger of my left hand. It’s been having mobility issues, and… it’s arthritis! Thank goodness I’m right handed, but still….
Folks…, getting older can suck!

Teeth: The good; The bad; and the $$$$$
Posted 3 years agoI have been blessed with very strong teeth.
Because I have very strong teeth, I have never had a cavity, ever!
That’s because the way the crystalline features of the teeth formed they’re impervious to the bacteria that caused decay (cavities). But, there’s a drawback!
Strong teeth means they don’t flex normally, and can fracture. Yes I am cursed with the best of both. Recently, I just discovered I cracked my fourth tooth. The first two require a root canal, and a crown. That first root canal failed and I lost the tooth. The second root canal was successful and I still have the tooth. The third cracked tooth was crowned with no root canal and is doing just fine. But now this new tooth that’s cracked is an upper tooth; that is the roots face upward.
I have really two choices: one is try a root canal, and pray that it takes, or two, have the tooth completely removed and over the course of 10 months have an artificial tooth pulled in.
10 months? Well, you have to extract the tooth and then build up the socket it’s sat in with bone. That takes ~6 months to recover from. Then they put a threaded stump into your upper jaw, where the natural tooth once sat, which takes at least three months to knit into the titanium.
The last step is to put in the remainder of the artificial tooth, and bring the gumline around so it looks normal. So altogether it’s actually a year. Frankly I’m hoping I can get away with a good root canal, but…
They say cars and houses are expensive to maintain: bullshit!

An interesting anniversary
Posted 3 years agoYesterday marked the 10th anniversary of my treatment for prostate cancer.
Had 3-choices back in 2012: Do nothing and wait to see how it would progress; have a full removal; have radiation treatment with permanent implants.
I took the last option. It worked! So far it hasn’t returned, but I’m still permanently fixed (yes I can no longer breed.., that’s what I mean).
I’m healthy; I’m alive; I’m well adjusted!

Finally ran the latest BOND movie: just…
Posted 3 years agoWTF?!!
Okay I get Daniel Craig has done five (5) installments.
I get his original carrier was that of a stuntman (yes reader’s…, how many knew that) so despite being ripped the body does wear down.
He’s probably been the BEST person I’ve seen play Bond as Fleming wrote the character…, but…
WTF on the ending!?!?
Ok MGM stupid .., stupid.. STUPID!!!!
I’m 61, and I remember my parents buying me a set of the big full face swimming mask, and fin’s with 007 molded into them.. that’s how long I’ve been enjoying Flemings character (except for Moore… he did suck as Bond). So I suddenly feel cheated . Don’t know how they plan to live up to the “James Bond Will Return,” statement now?!
🥺💔

Well... I got the Zombie Bug
Posted 3 years agoYes... despite vaccinations, washing my paws like a madman, masking up at work, in stores, etc., I ended up coming down with the Omicron variant.
It's like a really bad cold (as far as my symptoms go) that's taking forever to shake off. I've had it since Thursday evening. I just hope my folks don't get it, as I'm helping out around the house (mom's 86, dad's 88).
Definitely frustrating! I have to take day's off work in self-quarantine, while it works it way through. And yet, I have to get crud written up for the person(s) covering for me until I return. Like a "sick day" but, not. I've used today to address that need, which has worn me out.
** I'm actually close to a "F" it point, but I really can't do that.
To anyone else who's gotten it... I share the pain.

FC trip is off - Mother F….
Posted 3 years agoI’m just reading the FC website, and do to the issue with Covid (the horse shit that keeps on giving) they’re canceling the January event.
I commend the staff for what they are doing and for dealing with this crap that’s upended everything.
I’m wondering just how much more of this BS people can handle (let alone some of the heavy handed government crap…)?
I’m frustrated! I’m aggravated!
The saving grace is the FC leads are looking to do right for their patrons.
It’s…, damn it! I was just so looking forward to a nice weekend with fellow furries!

Merry Christmas!
Posted 4 years agoTo everyone ... a very Merry Christmas!
To those who are now experiencing Sunday, Dec. 26th... Happy Boxing Day!
Trivia for Dec. 25th:
53 years ago today, Apollo 8 became the first human crew to circumnavigate the Moon. The crew was astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders. All three are still very much with us.
They also read from Genesis as they circled the Moon, on Christmas of 1968. I was only eight myself, and have very strong memories of this event.
Can hardly wait to have similar as we circle Mars with a manned crew one day.
Also... today NASA (FINALLY) launched the James Webb Telescope. YAY!

Posted 4 years agoEight months on back order, and my new Trek bike has arrived!🎉
Unlike my old bike (which I discovered was way TOO huge to ride for my height) this one is the right size.
I’m picking her up later today, so as soon as I can a photo will be posted!
Soooo happpppyyyy🎉
I need to get my weight down by a few pounds, and at 5’, 8” (I’m 60 and I shrunk a full inch 😒) it’s enough extra that I’m not comfortable sleeping.
Yay!!! 🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️

Honor the veterans still with us, and those who’ve passed.
They are of great character, and they sacrificed so much for our freedom, and of others around the world.

Vaccine part 2
Posted 4 years agoSecond shot in the arm yesterday.
I have been downloading water and, while I seem to have a headache, it’s slight. I think that’s the trick here, to stay heavily hydrated for this vaccine. Many people I know who have had the heavier headaches, or the fatigue, weren’t staying as hydrated as I am. I even got into the water in the middle of the night, and my sleep was actually pretty good.
But if they expect me to take a booster screw it. This is not like tetanus, whooping cough, or the German measles. And what I do for work and where I work, nobody (and I do mean nobody) has gotten sick.
It’s done with!

I Love My Job!
Posted 4 years agoI’m not sure many can say that, but for me I honestly do!
Most may know I have a math and science background. In my current position I have opportunities to exercise both areas of knowledge, as well as sharing it with others in my job.
I’m very blessed to be able to work in this capacity, and also to have learning opportunities. These include reading Junto’s (a reading/study group idea of Benjamin Franklin’s) where I have been exposed to the “Great Books.”
In this case it’s made me realize how poorly I was educated in public schools. Oh sure we read Homer’s “The Odyssey” and other works, but never really read them!
In my work I have to read all the time.., and classical works by Aristotle, John Locke (who I really suggest people read, in addition to Montesquieu) Plato, et. al!
This is the up side! The down side..., I want more! Seriously? - is the reaction of long time friends who are too fixed in their ways.
But, I now definitely delight in knowing that I don’t know enough,.., and I hunger for more!
At 60 some suggest that I don’t get wound up, and geek out on new things like a 20 something. To this I say, BS!
To you reading this.., I challenge you! Yes..YOU!
Get digital Kindle copies of “The Harvard Classics,” or John Locke, Plato’s “The Republic” (the Allan Bloom translation is best) and expand your mind.
Sincerely,
Muddy

Shot #1 - Pfizer
Posted 4 years agoYep..., after several... weeks of trying (and failing) to schedule a time slot for a shot, I lucked out!
So did my 80+ year old folks (they got theirs the day before).
There in the high risk bracket, and I am now 60 (yes 60!! Bite me Father Time!!) and my job also classified me in a caregiver category.
But..., damn! It was the scheduling! Everyone’s forgetting that it takes time to manufacture this stuff, so we can only get those shots when it becomes available.
Originally I wasn’t planning to get any of these shots, but after consulting further with my doctor and doing some reading I decided it was worth…, A shot😏
Just a second one to go now.

Then, try to figure out where the F*** they’re coming in from.

SQUIRREL!
Posted 5 years agoYes... this all deals with a squirrel. Specifically a local gray squirrel in the yard.
With the mating season for these fuzzy critters long past for the year, they've all been busy hunkering down for winter. Now, it's not snowing in our area (I'm 35 minutes East of Sacramento... you know... where our loony legislators hang out)... but, the animals have their wintering never the less. They look for nice... warm... cozy places to hide overnight.
Well, were I'm residing (temporary, until I can actually BUY a new house) has had mice, roof rats, and now... SQUIRRELS!
Okay.. 1 squirrel. One gray squirrel. ONE 9 inch long PAIN IN THE... This thing has kept me awake in the middle of the night at times... (like at 3 am, on work days).
Question: How do you rid yourself of a squirrel, without killing it?
Answer: LIVE TRAP!
So, with a little help from a brother, we put peanut butter into the trap 3 days ago, and set it.
Day 1 - nothin'!
Day 2 - moved it closer to where it was curling up in my attic (having chewed timber, and such). Nothin!
Day 3 - Nothing in the morning and then.... 5 pm... BINGO! Caught it (looks like a young male).
So now.. this little gray squirrel was not happy. Okay... SERIOUSLY PISSED! I'd never seen such defiance! Human primates like us are... what 10 to 15 times larger? This thing was stomping it's paws and making all sorts of angry barks!
Now what? Mmmmm... Yeah.. .got to let it go, but where? WHERE!? AH!
The local park! That's the ticket! Tons of local trees, just like the scrub oak's in the back of my current yard, of the house I'm renting.
"Hey Bro?! HEY SQUIRREL! Wanna take a ride?"
So, over we go... angry squirrel, in live trap, in the back of my Subaru, cussing ... all the time wondering... will we experience the "National Lampoon Christmas Vacation" Christmas tree squirrel reenactment... in my car? Yeah.. this guy was seriously uptight.
So.... get to the park, put the cage on the ground, begin to release the safety on the cage doors and.... BINGO! This gray squirrel took off! I mean TOOK OFF!... I think if I'd clocked him, he'd traveling about 15 mph (squirrel speed). DAMN.. a direct beeline for the oaks!
1) Bugger trapped safely.
2) Bugger released safely.
3) Bro and me laughing our ass off at the speed of that squirrel... priceless!

Crap! My arm.
Posted 5 years agoFirst, all my writing (on a board, a digital tablet for lessons, or into a journal I use to record my reflection on my readings for work) are all right handed.
Second, because of the holidays (and because I am usually the closest locally of the 3 boys my folks had, AND they’re in their middle 80’s..., and a bit cheap as Scrooge) I become a periodic heavy lifter and handy-paw.
Well..., it’s very possible it’s cost me my arm's mobility for a little while. I..., I can barely lift my right arm.
It’s agonizing to attempt to get it parallel to the ground. I’m pretty sure that I didn’t tear tendons off, but I think it’s more of a serious strain. I’m very certain I’d be in greater agony if I had.
Gonna try over the counter pain relievers and ice (since heat didn’t work out well) but I my still need to go to the doctor if it’s not improving.

My niece and nephew’s Beagle just passed..
Posted 5 years agoJust got a text that the Beagle that my middle brother got when the kids were 4 & 6 just passed.
We don’t know anything more about it, but but she was a sweetheart. We’re thinking it could have been just old age, since they got her around 2006.. damn.....
I’m a dog lover... and it’s never easy to get news like this.

Posted 5 years agoNew iPhone.
My 4 year old 6S wasn’t charging..., not the battery but the metal teeth that makes contact with the power cord.
Completely compressed and not replaceable.
😔
Well what charge can be put on gives me a camera at least.
My new iPhone is the same size dimensionally, but has double the memory. AND $200 cheaper than the 6S was four years ago.

3 Score! Yep... I hit that one on the head.
Posted 5 years agoWhat is a "Score" you ask?
Okay... remember the Gettysburg Address, where President Lincoln said, "Four Score, and seven years ago.."?
He was referring to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, 87 years earlier! So... 87 - 7 = 80. 80 divided by .. well you get it now?
So 3-Score = 60.
Yep! I hit the BIG 60 on Tuesday, September 8th (BTW... Star Trek premiered on NBC at 10 pm that day in 1966 too.
Do I feel older? No.. not really, though I DO see it's harder to get weight gained off, and that my sleep is different (... though my sleep became worse after my cancer surgery 8 years back...).
Anyway, no I feel in good physical shape! Mind is sharp (and still a bit wacky for a member of the Furry Fandom). I have seen some new wrinkles, and more gray. But, hey it's not from bleach!
Ahem.... I don't know if it'll happen, but I fully want to live to 250 years (yes... I know it's unlikely... but then with modern meds and tech, who knows!).
Anyway, if any of you know me in RL... be kind to this gray muzzle.
