Drama, drama, drama
General | Posted 17 years agoHello to all of my friends out there! Once again, I've managed to disappear for a long time (though the FA outage made it longer than it otherwise would have been - but still...).
Things have been very much insane on my end. It all started with my kitten... Last year she chomped my hand really good and gave me an infection that took months to fight off. Well, I recovered from that, but apparently the antibiotics left my immune system a bit weak. The flu bug I managed to catch developed into a mild case of pneumonia. More antibiotics later and I'm on the mend again. Hopefully this time it'll stick.
On a sadder note, my grandmother has been in the hospital for over almost two months now, on a ventilator and feeding tube. She was admitted with a variety of problems, mostly trouble breathing. It was found that her kidneys had failed and the toxins were causing her body to shut down. The docs managed to get them working again, but she is only slightly responsive. Grandpa is going to have her moved to a rehab center (nursing home) with the hope that they can at least get her off the vent and tube.
In the midst of this, my brother and sister-in-law are getting ready to move to Alaska in a week and a half. It was decided that they would leave their household packed into the house here and they would rent a furnished apartment, taking only their dogs, clothes and one car. It has been a madhouse here for months, with ALL of our possessions spread out on the lawn at one time or another, trying to make enough room for all of their stuff.
Work has been grinding along in the midst of this controlled chaos. Things picked up for me there - the work is pretty much non-stop.
All told, I'm VERY glad that FA is up and running again, and I'm VERY glad to be back! Kudos to Yak, Dragoneer and ALL of the FA staff for a job well done!

I'm BAAACK!!
General | Posted 18 years agoAfter a surprisingly lengthy recovery from a startlingly severe illness, I have finally recovered enough to be active here once again. All I will say about it is that if you decide to adopt a kitten (or take in a stray, as I did), teach it NOT to bite you (or allow it to chew on your hand) no matter HOW cute it looks when they are acting so fierce. If you ARE bitten, seek IMMEDIATE medical advice - don't let it go until you feel terribly debilitated. Cat bites are nothing to fool around with. An antibiotic taken quickly can save you MONTHS of IV treatments, not to mention the sickness and debilitation of a systemic infection.
It wasn't fun, nossirree. Or cheap.
Anwhoo, I'm glad to be back!

Meme madness!!1! Character profile questionnaire
General | Posted 18 years agoNormally I treat memes with the disdain of the truly disinterested, but this one currently making the rounds actually serves a purpose that I can get behind. I can't remember where I stole this from, but here it is:
What is the name of your fursona?
- Jawari (Yah-Wah-Ree, equal emphasis on the syllables) or Jai (YAH-ee). "Jawari" is Quechua (Inca) for "poet". His nickname, Jai, is both a shortening of his name and the sound his lover makes when Jai pounces on him.
Where did the name of your Fursona come from?
- I had his nickname from a bolt of inspiration, but his full name was a pleasant surprise from a Quechua dictionary. It fits him very well.
What species is your fursona and why did you choose that species?
- Jai is a were-black jaguar. He has two forms, his black jaguar body and his humanoid form. When he appears as a human, he retains his cat ears, black claws, full tail and fangs. He also has a small patch of fur on his lower back around where his tail meets his spine, about the size and shape of a man's hand spread fingers down. The fur is very soft. I chose his species because that's what came to me. His story unfolded almost immediately after I created him.
What color is your fursona and why? Hair/fur/eyes/etc
Hair: Blue-black (true black) and very long, to the back of his knees.
Fur: Black with ghost black markings (think watered silk)
Eyes: Bright light blue
Etc: Very tan skin (think Native American), long black eyelashes, no body hair except for a small patch of pubic hair and the fur on his lower back. No beard or mustache, he's naturally smooth. 5'9-ish, 125 lbs-ish, very lean and muscular (think runner/swimmer's body type). Delicate, almost elfin Native features.
Why?:
- Jai's ancestors were worshipped as gods by the Chavin, the Native culture that flourished in Peru between ca. 900 BC and 250 BC, many centuries before the rise of the Inca. His entire story is based on legends from Peruvian history. I merely pictured a Native youth with jaguar parts, and I thought he was HOT.
What is your fursona's personality and how does this compare to your IRL personality?
- Jai starts out as very independent and capable, but is also a sensualist. He is very fierce - one pounce, one kill - toward his prey and his enemies, but becomes a complete slave to love when with Raua. He would do anything for his lover (he even leaves "gifts" on Raua's doorstep), but would tear apart anything that got in his way. He's very much a "pushy uke" type - when he pounces Raua, he doesn't ask, he demands to be mated. And he likes it wild. As for how his personality compares to my own, well, if I have his characteristics within me, they're pretty deeply buried. I'm nicer to strangers.
What is one item your fursona owns that is significant to you IRL?
- Jai's era was the immediate time of the first Spanish explorers in Peru, so nothing I have really translates back to that time. I don't believe in robbing antiquities... and Jai doesn't have much that would have survived until today anyway. Although if someone were to find his nest...
What is one thing you think you would say to your fursona if you could meet?
ROWR!!
What is one thing your fursona would say to you if you could meet?
- Roooowr?! (Think upset kitty meow. Actually, the shock of being dropped into the present would probably cause him to break down in tears, especially if Raua wasn't there too.)
How has your fursona changed over the years?
- Not all that much. His character has rounded out quite a bit with the stories I've written, but he really hasn't changed per se.
How long have you had this fursona?
- You would ask this! Geez, I think I wrote my first story about him in, oh, 1991? 1992? I guess that makes him about 15!
Would you like to be more like your fursona?
- Heh, probably in looks. Did I mention he's HOT?
