Posted 13 years agoOh my gosh guys, RAINFURREST WAS A BLAST.
I normally don't post con reports, but holy cow, this time around it was an experience.
I am sad I didn't get to hang out with my usual
northsound crew, and I missed them a lot and thought about them frequently during the convention. Especially
poison,
brighton, and
omekin, but we get to hang out fairly regularly outside of conventions. I also am sad I missed getting to hang out with
aeto and
frysco at the party for Frysco. :<
I did spend a lot of time with
neondonkeykong, my con buddy, and it was the BEST. She introduced me to a lot of awesome people, and I loved every minute of the time we spent.
Highlights:
Nail painting party: Best, A+ will do again, turnout was AMAZING. All the snacks that were brought was a HIT and the location
talutie & I found turned out to be totally suitable. I loved rearranging those tables, but I especially loved all the nails that got painted! So cool! I rocked green toenails with a black paw print, and Jello's awesome outerspace nails that look like a nebula!
Malameux aka my boyfriend Mike, being a good sport with all the furry stuff (for the most part, lol). He took tons of photos, suited up with me, and him being there made it so much more fun!
Super great turnout for ALL of the panels I hosted/helped host. Sorry "Fursuiting: the business" one got cancelled, I didn't plan on/prepare to speak on that topic, and the new conbook description never got printed, so my original panel for that time slot never got advertised. No worries, though!
Guest of honor dinner was delicious and definitely a cool experience to attend! I wish I got to speak or mingle more with my friends whom I encouraged to get tickets, though. They already had a planned routine to roast the conchair, so I didn't interrupt, which was probably better off than me embarrassing myself on stage ;3
contact team getting me Roses! They are totally beautiful! I left one for housekeeping when I left. They are so stunningly pretty, even several days later at this point! Its not often I get flowers so this was a special treat. <3
Meeting
reimeerkat and
rawkz0rz was pretty darn awesome, I loved his set on Friday and at the end of the dead dog, looking forward to seeing them again at FC hopefully!
Wearing that damn creepy horse mask around was hilarious. Its name is Horsechal.
Basically the best convention experience ever. I will remember this for a long time. I didn't think anything could top the zombie-themed RF (which I had basically the most fun at in the history of time), but yeah, being guest of honor at Rainfurrest was just awesome. Thank you everyone.

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8082329/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8233984/

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8575700/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8575634
and so on. :3
Be sure to check out more examples in my gallery! If you want more of your character showing (i.e. shoulders, bust, waist up, tails, arms with props, etc) we can discuss it, it may be a small additional cost depending on the amount requested, let me know your idea and I can give you a tailored price estimate. :D
Size-wise they are around ~3 x 5 inches, but sometimes run bigger since they are cut around the character, I also tend to draw large, but depends on the pose. They are completed for you on on cardstock paper, laminated, and slot punched.
If you're NOT going to Rainfurrest, let me know because I can mail it! Mailing will be first class-type of mailing within the United States for free. If you are outside the US mailing cost is only $1.
If that sounds like something you might be interested in, let me know by commenting and I can get started for you! If you're not interested, can't afford it, etc -- no problem, next time of course. :D
Slots are on a paid basis. So if you want a slot, please be prepared to pay for it, since you do not have the slot until it is paid!
I take Paypal as payment, there will be time for us to discuss what you want then I will reply to you you with my paypal information. I'll get started on your commission after I receive payment! I prefer to do business through the FA note system, but we can also do business via email its no problem! If you prefer email-only make mention of your email address when commenting here.
Thank you so much for your interest everyone! Badges are closed for now, thank you!
My dog, Turbo had his routine vet visit for his shots yesterday, but it turned into something else after he sniffed up a foxtail seed (a type of grass seed that is barbed and burrows invasively) as we were walking the parking lot AT THE VET. With every sneeze it was working itself higher and higher up his nose. :(
http://a.yfrog.com/img863/5098/gvkhk.jpg -- A photo of the seed that worked its way several inches into Turbo's nasal cavity in just a few minutes.
http://a.yfrog.com/img616/7567/ay5czj.jpg -- A sad Turbo a little while after surgery.
Turbo had to be sedated for the surgical removal. $100 later we have an expensive seed removed from the poor dog's nasal cavity. At least we were ALREADY AT the vet, instead of like in the middle of nowhere hiking on a mountian or something. Poor Turbo.
He's better now, the vet removed it and gave us some pain medicine to give Turbo, who is feeling much better. The vet visit is already paid for. But any commissions from this batch will have the money used to offset the cost of the surgical extraction.

JacqA little feedback about fursuit construction technique!
Posted 13 years agoHey folks!
As you know I got a nice camera from
malameux and I have been using it to make a couple of videos demonstrating some fursuit techniques (see my recent uploads for applique paw pads and applying bias tape!). I'm curious, though! Is that sort of thing something you like seeing? What kind of thing are you struggling with that I might be able to help with in a video format?
I am going to be finishing a fursuit head this week for Rainfurrest, and I might be able to film some of that process. I understand there is lots of fursuit video tutorials "out there" on Youtube, I only want to expand the knowledge base!
Sharing of techniques is what got us where we are today. Look at how many fursuit makers there are compared to 10 years ago! I want to encourage more people to make their own fursuits, it is such a rewarding process!
I won't be able to film everything, but hopefully I can help demystify some aspect of the construction process. :3

nevermint -PaidIts not a race! (thoughts on fursuit construction)
Posted 13 years agoI might be putting myself out on a limb here, but I think a message needs to go out -- or at least be thought about and the idea placed in the minds of everyone reading.
Fursuiting is a fun hobby (profession for some), and a lot of people devote a lot of time to fursuit construction. Others simply don't. I think I want to make people aware that creating a costume isn't a race. Its not something that needs to be rushed to completion, or hurried into existence. Quality comes from time spent.
Time spent examining references of real animals throughout the process.
Time spent sketching shapes to interpret it into a character in your own working ability.
Time spent choosing fabrics.
Time spent building a base/sculpting/foamwork, ensuring it still matches the real animal reference while still having the essence of your own interpretations.
Time spent with care and thought into planning seams and making the pattern.
Time spent sewing and attaching the fabric.
Time spent sculpting noses, teeth, etc, ensuring that they match the real animal reference or your interpretation.
Time spent on detail work, is the inside of the mask an ill-fitting loose balaclava? Is it carefully lined? Is it unlined? Is it comfortable, is everything attached??
Time spent creating eyes, ensuring that not only do they have life to them, but they have a particular expression and direction of focus, that they are properly sized, that a person can see out of them as well as see them.
Time spent testing that the paint used won't scratch off, or the glazes used won't get sticky over time, or that the wire you used won't break after 5 bends, that the material you used won't leak dye onto the other materials you used.
I think when we race to finish things, we cheat ourselves and we cheat our audience: We cheat ourselves out of potential quality that could've been.
I have long stood by the opinion: It is more fun to have a costume than it is to not have a costume. However, this is not an excuse to finish in a hurry. To allow rushing and sloppy work, and to use that an excuse to hurry to put your first tries for sale slapped with the title "fixer upper". This is not a reason at all to rush anything, its a reason to critically examine what your goals are in costuming. To have a piece finished a month earlier than a deadline? To have a piece finished in time for an event? To have a costume done within a specified number of arbitrary hours? Re-examine that. Its good to have things finished early. Its good to have things finished in time for an event. Its good to time yourself to find out how long a task takes. But it is not good to rush it for that very reason.
If you are someone who is not a fursuit maker, but perhaps an admirer or buyer, something important to look for in purchasing a costume is the time and thought put into creating that character. Is it a character you are buying, or just a mask someone "created to sell"? Sometimes that is a very important distinction. Examine also the time span from between when the artist finished the piece, and has listed it for sale. Did they give themselves any time to examine the piece, to look at it for a day, a week, (more?) to find any details that needed finished, or any other work that needed done to polish it up to be perfect? To give time to accept and follow a constructive critique perhaps? To revise the mask after an improvement in personal construction techniques, any of that? Or did they put it immediately for sale. Essentially shouting DONE! And slamming their glue guns on their desk and raising their hands from it.
I see time spent as quality. Just the same as I see appropriate choice of materials as quality and level of finish as quality, as well as numerous other aspects of creating. None of this is an excuse to take forever to make something, but I don't feel like any of this is a race to be the first to finish.
Just my sincere thoughts.
