Jagged's favoritest things of 2024
Posted 9 months agoYet again i present a list of entertainment media that i quite enjoyed this year. Not stuff that came out this year, but stuff i experienced for the first time this year. As a rule i will try to only put stuff here that i played/watched/finished to completion. Or close enough to completion, anyway. With some honorable mentions at the bottom.
Books:
The Damnation Game by Clive Barker
i expected a horror novel, and got a gay revenge romance instead. i'm officially a Clive Barker fan now.
Anime:
Akuma-kun
Well, since i'm not getting a new Kitaro anime any time soon, i'll settle for the next best thing. Akuma-kun is Kitaro light edition, drawn by the same mangaka, wouldn't you know. i actually thought this was a blatant Kitaro ripoff at first, but nope, it's just the same creator, hence the extreme similarities. it's a Sherlock Holmes-esque mystery of the week show, with lots of demons, ghosts, ghoulies, and occult shenanigans. so you know i love everything about this.
Undead Unluck
Fuck. Me. what a fantastic anime. animation is flawless, the style is flawless, everything about it is flawless. who says Shounen anime is dead, this is one of the best damn Shounen anime i ever watched. the kind of show that reminds you why you ever became an anime fan to begin with. also! maybe the most likeable female protagonist in... any anime? at least in any battle-action anime. Fuuko is a good girl, and Andy is a sexy badass mothertrucker.
Fire Force
well fuck, same as Undead Unluck. just a perfect example of anime done right. lotsa fun & goofy characters, cool & crazy powers, plenty humor and plenty action. and fluid as hell animation. manga it's based on made by the same guy who drew Soul Eater, which is one of my favorite animes peroid.
Kaiju No. 8
ok, a little Isekai bullshit here. or rather, nerd self-insert bullshit. but this one i can forgive because A) its protagonsit is likable and B) it has some damn fine action and animation. just a solid & fun show. good stuff.
Movies/shows/not anime:
Turbo Kid
i had completely forgotten that the movie existed, i did hear of it back in the day and it had been on my watchlist. i stumbled upon the Turbo Kid game that came out this year, played it oblivious to the fact that it's techncially a tie-in a sequel to the movie. and this movie's fun! hommage to the apocalypse movie craze of the 80s. and a gore fest to boot. mucha gusta.
Games: (a surprisingly long list this year)
Pokemon Colosseum + Gale of Darkness
Poekmon Colosseum is the Pokemon RPG for adults that i always wanted. this is a hard game, and the most challenge i've ever had out of a Pokemon game. it's perfect, and my god, i wish there were more Pokemon games like it. Gale of Darkness is also very good, but overall a lesser experience than Colosseum imo. while it is certainly more polished and has more content, that sorta works to its detriment.Colosseum felt fresh and different, GoD is a more standard kiddie Pokemon game.
TOMBA!
this is the one i had by far the most fun with this year, aside from Colosseum. it's so unlike anything else i played. it's an exploration+adventure+sidescroller,+collectathon mishmash, with crazy quirky designs and creativity bursting at the seams. and I LOVE TOMBA, he's so goshdang adrrable, ahhhh i love wild Tarzan boy.
Shin Megami Tensei 4
haha, i fucking hate this fucking game. but i still rather play this than 99% of what came out this year. SMT4 is a poorly desinged mess. one of those rare so bad it's good game. just a genuinely terrible game from start to finish, with the single worst quest system i've ever experienced in any RPG ever. also the worst world map in any game ever! you never know where to go, what to do, and even a step by step walkthrough is not guaranteed to help you. it's that bad. quests will barely ever give you the exact location where you need to go, there are no markers on the map whatsoever, and sometimes the place you need to go isn't even labelled on the map! it's just... mindboggling how hostile a quest system can be to its players. and to top it off, you have quests inside your OPTIONAL quest list that are not actually optional. they are mandatory to drive the game forward. what. how. why. you have 2 quest lists, one for main story missions, and one for optional missions... but the optional missions aren't actually optional. the game flat otu lies to oyu. just. fuck you, SMT4. and i'm not even gona get into how the story & characters make are underwritten and make no damn sense. or how Naraku is the single most hardcore frustrating "tutorial" in JRPG history. but hey, i managed to get neutral path on my first playthrough and didn't have to try. considered one of the toughest paths to get in any MegaTen... so, suck it, game.
Shin Megami Tensei: Soul Hackers
contrast to SMT4, this is a pretty good SMT game. that nobody played. eve i almost didn't play it, and for the pettiest reason: the cover. look up the cover of Soul Hackers. it's the second worst cover on any NDS game, only topped by the EU cover of From the Abyss. it's gloriously horrible. anyway, i checked this year whether there are still copies of Soul Hackers for sale, and lo and behold, not only on sale but cheap. only 50 bucks for an Atlus game on DS? i think everybody got fooled into passing it up thanks to its awful cover art. well, i quite enjoyed it. i spent over a week collecting coins via Street Pass to spend on demons in the game. i haven't had this much shaking a game since the Pikachu pedometer. shaking my DS for coinage, connecting my DS to another DS for more Street Pass coinage. mmmmhhh good gambling dopamine. hell, there is a casino in the game itself, so i spent another week just gambling for the best gear in the game and making the game itself a cakewalk. so my impression of Soul Hackers may be slightly tainted by my gambling addiction, but the game itself is fun. good dungeons, good boss battles. the only really big flaw the game has is right on its cover. the obnoxious Navi-type sidekick chick Nemissa. who will interrupt your gameplay regularly to spout exposition that you could not care less about. ugh. go away, Nemissa. i'm going back to the Blackjack table...
Baroque (the PS1 version)
yes. the game i have been non-stop gushing about, i finally sat down and actually *played* it. and i totally did not cheat or anything, because this game is some rogue-like hard as balls bullshit. as much as i love everything about it, the style, the atmosphere, the mechanics... i cannot stomach rogue-likes. even with cheating, it took over 3 hours to finish this darn thing. how anyone beats this the legit way is beyond me. aside from that one fatal flaw of having no checkpoints, i love it. Baroque is that type of game that my sick & twisted dreams are made of.
Final Fucking Fantasy 6
one of the big ones on my catch-up list of classic games. FF9 is next. haven't gotten very far yet, about 5 hours in, but i'm already loving it's silliness with all my heart. yeah just casually sink an entire city into the sand, break the 4th wall, board the ghost train that ferries the dead, why the heck not! oh and i think i loooove Kefka. i always had a hunch i would love Kefka, but i certainly love Kefka. AND THE MUSIC IS SO GOOD
Turbokid
i weep for Turbokid. nobody played it, nobody payed attention to it. and it's one of the best damned Metroidvanias since Hollow Knight and Astalon. you have huuuuuuge map to explore, plenty of bad guys to blast into gore, and the BMX mechanic feels tight and it's tons of fun to roll around the levels and do half pipe tricks.
AND THAT SOUNDTRACK!!!
Balatro
ah yes, the annual Skinner Box game of "just one more". the one exception to my "fuck roguelikes". Balatro is great if you wanna nurture your budding gambling addiction. and yo, it features the legendary MALF face, one must pay tribute to that. where my NLSS bros at....
Honorable mentions:
Antonblast
i'm in a weird spot with this one. it's one of those games i loathe to play, but love to watch. i care not for platformers one bit. i played the crap out of Warioland 4 when i was 10, but those days are behind me. can't stomach the damn things anymore. but this game just... it just looks so good! Antonblast will single-handedly revived 90s cartoons in your heart. this game oozes so much style, it outta be illegal. the Warioland influence is obvious, but it's giving me Skullmonkeys and Viewtiful Joe vibes too. with all the polish of a nintendo game when nintendo was in its prime. shit, nintendo wishes it could still make games that ooze this much personality.
AND THAT SOUNDTRACK!!!
Pepper Grinder
speaking of polished games, Pepper Grinder plays smoother than butter. the way you slide and dig around the levels is gameplay perfection. much like Antonblast, i had my fill with it after 1 hour, though what i played i greatly enjoyed. i was lured in with false expectations, i thought it would be a more exploration rich type of game, but nah, it's 100% arcade structure. very linear levels, collect points, that sorta deal. i imagine for people who enjoy platformers, this is a mustplay.
Warcraft Adventure
talk about a blast from the past. didn't actually play this one, probably a bitch to get running. but just the fact that this exists and managed to be salvaged blows my mind. and Mr. Crabs does a great orc voice, very sexy.
Lord Winklebottom Investigates
lower end of the favorites list, but i did have fun with it. overalll a more medoicre point & click game with mediocre art, bit damn, it's so delightfully British. SAY MORE BRITISH-ISM YOU SILLY SHERLOCK HOLMES GIRAFFE, BY JOVE BLIMEY BUGGER ALL MONOCLE AND CUPS OF TEA

Jagged's favorite things in 2023
Posted 2 years agoAnnual list of all the things i enjoyed this year. (Not necessarily things that came out this year, and not in any particular order.)
GAMES:
- The Don't Escape trilogy
Excellent point & click action, with light survival mechanics. Simple, spooky, awesome.
- Hellnight + Despiria
The kinda games that really, REALLY make me wanna learn how to make games myself. Weird japanese horror RPGs from the late 90/early 00s are an aesthetic like no other.
- Garage Bad Dream Adventure
See above.
- WURM Journey to the center of the earth
So, i have been planning on catching up with the 8-bit to 16-bit era of gaming. NES is a little toooo old school for my taste in general, but there are a few games from back then that manage to surprise me. Wurm is one. This had some really cool ideas for its time. Absolutely loved it. Except for the starfish section. Fuck the starfish section. I went out of my way to cheat just for that one part of the game. This is what i mean by "NES is too old-school", game design had no standards whatsoever back then. Enemy patterns and hitboxes are just plain random. Ignoring that, the boss battles are the highlight by far. Puzzles mixed with shooting sections, very inventive! More of that, please.
Also, check out my girl's strut lol: https://youtu.be/JiO0rghWNjs?si=-sm.....n6j&t=1957
- Ufouria
Same as above! Also a NES game that's still very playable, if you use save states. (╬ಠิ益ಠิ)
- Castlevania 64 Legacy of Darkness
I had an obsession with this one. As a Castlevania game it sucks. But taken on its own... This is one of those truly unique games. The atmosphere in the beginning is top notch, exploring the mansion has SUCH vibes. The rest of the game kinda eats. The platforming is absolutely atrocious, and again, save states are an essential if you hope of making it to the end with your sanity intact. And locking charatcers/content behind playthroughs? Not ok.
- Lost in Play
Solid adventure game. Manages to be cute without dipping into insipid. That's an accomplishment all on its own. None of that pastel colored "cozy game" BS. This is an actual game.
- The Last Door
Something that's actually deserving to call itself "Lovecraftian".
- Kilcount
Probably the most obscure thing on this list? I detest RPGMaker games, but this was saved by its stellar Monty Python-esque writing.
- Freedom's Eye
A surreal Russian Horror Walk Sim. My second favorite genre.
- Beyond the Edge of Owlsgard
Now that one made me feel 8 years old again! A graphic adventure that could be plucked right from a Win98 PC. Beautiful art, great soundtrack, even the voice acting isn't half bad.
- Meg's Monster
Ah yes, the one entry that actually made me fucking cry. There's always one.
- The Last Faith
Haven't played much of it, but it seems a solid Metroidvania that reeeeeally desperately wants to be Bloodborne. But is actually very forgiving in difficulty. At least so far.
edit: Alright, after playing more, this is not that good a game. Many questionable design decisions, many bugs, and waaaaaay too long. This shoulda been a 10 hour game and it drags itself to about thrice that. I gave up after roughly a third into the game. Nice graphics, not much to offer besides that. Unless you really, REALLY desperately want to replay Bloodborne in 2D for some reason.
BOOKS:
- Clive Barker's Book of Blood
Didn't think i'd enjoy Clive Barker of all people, but the man knows how to write. Very excellent horror, with a very surreal touch.
MOVIES:
- Uh... the Mario Movie, i guess? Movies haven't been good to me in a long while. You know what, fuck the movies category. How about a web series category instead?
WEB SERIES:
- Analogue Horror!
Been watching the ever loving crap out of any and all analogue horror i could find. This is some spooky ass stuff. It does rely on its found footage VHS formula like a 90s kid with OCD, but it hasn't gotten old yet.
- Opal
An Adult Swim short made by that hipster guy who makes those cool Vine clips with the catchy music and the 90s aesthetic. You can watch it right here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1pVLJl_snc
Pretty heavy stuff tho, don't watch if you're going through any kind of depressive state. I made that mistake...
ANIME/MANGA:
Been mostly catching up on lotsa 80s/90s classics. Nothing really new that i liked much. Still reading Made in Abyss and Land of the Lustrous.
- Berserk
- Ninja Scroll
- Bomberman Jetters (Not finished yet, still watching. I'm savoring this one, it's too good.)
- Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma
- 3x3 Eyes
- Legend of the Overfiend (i know it's porn, shuddup >:U )
- Hell's Paradise (The one new manga on this list that i read.)
- Also watched the Dante and the Wolverine anime... not good, but much sex appeal. (○゚ε゚○)
And lastly, Sonic Prime! Probably the most guilty of pleasures on this entire list, but damn, it's way better than a Sonic show has any right to be. It's just mindless cartoony action fun. And even has Big the Cat!

Jagged's best things of 2022
Posted 3 years agoI always intend to make a "best of" list at the end of the year... and then forget about it. BUT NOT THIS TIME.
Here's the best things i watched/played/read in 2022. (Regardless whether they were actually released in 2022, just the first time i experienced them.)
Anime:
- Kimetsu No Yaiba (Demon Slayer)
Best damn anime i've seen since Dororo, really lives up to the hype. If you wanna re-experience that feeling that DBZ gave you the first time you watched it, you owe it to yourself to watch this thing. Inosuke best boy!!!!!
Manga:
- Hell's Paradise
Fantastic manga, great pacing, great visuals... and best of all? It's actually finished. A completed manga that doesn't drag on till the heat death of the universe? That alone is an accomplishsment. Also the protag is a cutie pie.
Videogames:
- Exo One
This is as close as i will get to having a spiritual experience while playing a videogame. How i long to be a space drone flying through a quiet universe, discovering new planets, not a soul to bother and only space dust to keep me company.
- The Eternal Cylinder
Just a damn good game with a damn unique gameplay loop. Made by Ace Team! The weirdos who brought you Zeno Clash and Rock of Ages. So you know you're in for something mind-bendingly interesting.

Android waifus go stomp stomp stomp on your eldritch horrors. Like PS1 Resident Evil? It's PS1 Resident Evil. With just a touch of Tsutomu Nihei and German nihilism.
- Strange Horticulture
Actually don't have much to say except that it's fun? It's just a very solid puzzle game.
- Shin Megami Tensei 5
Ehhhh I'm not even sure it deserves to be on the list. It's certainly a step up from SMT4, but felt kinda like a dud by the end. I wish it had been better but i did had fun playing it but eeeeeehhhh play SMT3's remake instead.
Movies:
- Mad God
Ah, stop motion. My actual nightmare fuel.
- The Wolf House
AH STOP MOTION MY ACTUAL NIGHTMARE FUEL
Books:
- Don't Sleep, there are snakes
It's not often that a book will challenge my persepctive on life, humanity and the nature of everything... but this one did it. And all through the power of linguistics. I read it in summer and still find myself thinking about the things that happened in this book. It's that powerful a read.
- In the heart of the sea
If you feel like life is just too good, how about reading about sailors starving to death lost at sea. Fun times.
- Wyrd and Other Derelictions
Actually captures the vibe of Lovecraft, something that many horror stories attempt and nearly none succeed at.
- Her Smoke rose up forever
Well if Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes challenged my way of thinking about life in a positive way, Her Smoke Rose up Forever makes me wanna kill myself and everyone i love. Good stuff.
I probably forgot several things that i should be listing here.... i may update as i remember.
