RIP Skyrates
Posted 9 years agoit appears that one of my old favourites has gone down forever.
no more will the D3L1V3R4T0R ply the unfriendly heavens of Skytopia,
trashing any pirate that dares show their scraggly face.
goodbye, Skyrates -- you were awesome, and so were the players I befriended (and anti-wise)
through the years of my playing,
as a Blue (Azure League, explorers/scientists) , I not-so-accidentally Arcadia,
the home of the Purple (Court of Violets) faction ---
I did it on purpose, to stir up what had become a boring game...
and then I jumped ship TO the Violets (Artists, given a bit to chaos) ,
just because it fit their own nature so well.

salty liquorice~ DZ for the wwhha hoooly wow that's SALTY!
Posted 9 years agofor years, I've been reading about salty liquorice, salmiak, etc. that are enjoyed in the Netherlands, bits of northern Germany, Scandanavia, and Finland.
a few days ago, I finally decided to procure some. it arrived on my doorstep this afternoon! I got one of the Dubbel Zout (Double Salt, naturally!) varieties from the Netherlands (K&H, says the selling site)... about 450g of the stuff, to be slightly inexact.
they look like "Rolos" candy (truncated cone!), and are black liquorice chews, with DZ on the top,
they seemed rather innocuous, really! then I popped one in my mouth and
OHMYGOSHTHESALT DROOOOOLDROOLDROOLSLOBBERVATE
the outside is a bit salty, you see. and then more comes out as one chews and moves the thing about. it's semi-firm, so it takes a bit of sucking and chewing to soften it up to a properly pliable state. it seems the secret (at least for me) is not to be too gung-ho about mashing the poor thing up.
there is a proper liquorice flavor, of course, but this stuff is just barely sweet enough to -- at times -- balance the saltiness, if I'm not chewing on it too assiduously.
the salt in these, by the way, is ammonium chloride, so there is also the odd but very definite whiff of ammonia, which sends the taste in a bit of an odd direction when it hits from time to time.
I... I think I'm addicted! it's definitely a nice change from sugary sweets, though I do have to keep a handle on having too much of these (the liquorice can raise blood pressure, for one).
I've had about 20 of 'em since I cracked open the package a few hours ago! I think that's more than enough for one night. XD

SAI 2 "incoherence of internal state" startup error FIXED.
Posted 9 years agothis problem arose after I had to hard-reset my computer while SAI 2 was running.
afterwards, SAI 2 would crash on startup with an error dialog:
Error
Details
- The program detected an incoherence of internal state.
- Windows function call failed.
because SAI 2 was unable to shut down correctly, it left a file called settings2.ssd.log in the program's work directory.
when I deleted this file, the program started working again!
this file can be found in Users\{username}\Documents\SYSTEMAX Software Development\SAI2 Demo
(replace {username} with the appropriate name of the Windows user account involved)
=====
I must give props to the free and awesome API Monitor v2
( http://www.rohitab.com/apimonitor ),
which helped me track down what SAI 2 was trying to do when it crashed.
it's a brilliant piece of software -- even in its current alpha-test stage - that can monitor a process to see what Windows API calls it's making.
better yet, it highlights unsuccessful calls in yellow right in the log, so it's easy to see them.
the third or fourth such call pointed right to the directory and filename that were associated with the trouble.
from there, it took just a little messing around with the work directory and its files to figure out just what was messing up SAI 2's operation.

SAI 2 has gone kaput
Posted 9 years agoearlier tonight, the beta install of SAI 2 I've been using suddenly quit working.
the executable refuses to load, giving an error message about "internal coherence" or some such.
I've reinstalled SAI 2, updated my graphics drivers to the latest version, and run the System File Checker.
since I have no idea now what else to try, and have spent about 4 hours trying already, I'm going to just put SAI 2 aside for now and do stuff in SAI 1.
fortunately, most of the things on which I was currently working have been exported to PNG,
which means I can pull them into SAI 1 and work on them there.
there are a few gift arts in progress, alas, which are in SAI 2 and have not yet been exported.
these are going to stay on hold for now, in hopes I can get SAI 2 working again soon.
I think this has arisen from a system crash (I had to hard-reset the computer) earlier this evening, which has managed to corrupt something important somewhere. unfortunately, I have no idea what else to do , short of undoing my recent Win 10 Anniversary Edition update install by reverting to the previous System Restore Point.
eeeehhh... I guess I'll do a System Restore and see what happens.
the new stuff in Win 10 AE wasn't that compelling, anyway.

Nashville was awesome!
Posted 9 years agoit was great to hang out with
chiaroscuro again, after not seeing him for more than 10 years.
Hattie B.'s Hot Chicken was fantastic. "Damn Hot!!" kicked my tongue's ass pretty hard, but in a good way. I'm glad I didn't try "Shut the Cluck Up!!"
Lane Motor Museum was super cool. among other things, I got to see a Peel Trident and P50 up close, a whole other load of awesome European vintage autos and motorcycles, bicycles and aircraft, and a 2004 Fiat Multipla, the six-eyed design I have lovingly deemed "The Italien". Also featured was a replica of Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion, which has all the leg room a rear-seat passenger could ever desire.
Nashville Zoo at Grassmere was pretty fab, too. we spent four hours there checking out all the neat animals and plants, and even managed somehow not to get a sunburn along the way.
after dropping Chi off at the place he was working the next morning, I visited with another friend (Cloudy Skies) and his roommate in another part of town for a few hours before heading back home -- only to go on to an evening shift at work. :P
it turned out to be a really nice daycation... felt almost like 3 days packed into about 28 hours. :)

Nook Wants Nashville Hot Chicken CLOSED, THANKS!
Posted 9 years agoI am planning to meet up with my friend
chiaroscuro next week in Nashville,
for a day of good eats at Hattie B's and visiting cool places like the Lane Motor Museum.
it's a four-hour round trip there, and I'll be spending a night at a local hotel, oaying $45 for half of that,
as well as paying for eats, truck fuel, and admission to whatever places we visit.
would anyone be interested in a commission to help me out with the costs?
I'm up for a few one-off images, and/or a TF and/or WG series to help keep my bank account happy.
sketches are $4. inks are $8. flat colors +$4 for each. I am not doing shading for this offer, or complex backgrounds.
the prices above are for one character. extra characters (including Hay) are +50% of base price each.
please let me know here or by note if you are interested!
*** thanks to the folks who responded! I've got a nice full slate, now, so these are closed. ***

so my Roku Streaming Stick got here last night...
Posted 9 years agoI got it for free with a three-month prepaid subscription to Sling TV.
it supports all the streaming services to which I subscribe (Sling TV, Crunchyroll, and Netflix)
and I put on several others, including YouTube, to add some free content --
just a tiny bit of what's available.
Crackle is pretty good, and so is Pluto TV -- both are free,
Roku also supports Playstation VUE, if that's more your thing. ;3

Sling TV
Posted 9 years agoI'm giving it a try, since our current provider's intro discount expired last month and our bill went up by $50/month!
I've chosen the Orange Plan for $25 -- it doesn't have the ESPN and Disney channels that the Blue plan offers, but the base Orange package has FOX sports channels, NBCSN, and a few others I want that the Blue plan lacked.
I also prepaid 3 months to get a Roku Streaming Stick for free (could have also chosen a Roku 2 unit), so I'll be able to take my service anywhere that has accessible broadband and an HDMI-capable TV. (I can also watch it on my Android phone, if I really want, but that would be limited to places I can use Wi-Fi with the phone -- my data plan is pretty limited.)
also have added on Willow as an extra for cricket coverage, for just $5 a month. <3
looks as though they have a nice little library of semi-current and live stuff, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. '
got to watch a bloke score four runs off his helmet earlier this evening XD.

so, I just found Japan's answer to BBC's old Formula 1 Intro
Posted 9 years agothank you, Japan!
T-Square: "Truth"
(the actual music starts 24 or so seconds in, but the F1 engine sounds are cool, so yeah!)
in case you're wondering, the old BBC intro uses the awesome bass bit from the end of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain":
(go to about 1:50 to get right to the music!)

FURCAR - I am the admin!
Posted 9 years agoactually, I have been for the past three weeks.
if you like stock-car racing / touring-car racing of the BTCC or V8 Supercars sort, then please give
furcar a good look.
the series works simply enough, even if it doesn't feature nearly as much road-course racing as I'd like!
there are three pools of drivers set up at the beginning of each season.
players pick two drivers from each pool; best picks win for the week.
the "Chase" does not have any prerequisite for entering -- just announce your racer(s) (two max per player) and they will be scored! see the FURCAR page for the proper format of entries.

*does a sun dance in the general direction of Bristol, TN*
Posted 9 years agoI switched this weekend's work-day and off-day so I could watch my favorite race of the year Bristol race last night.
the race got rained out and postponed until this afternoon. bummer! I love watching 'em run under the lights.
today, storms pelted the area until just a little while ago, but at last, the rain seems to have moved out of the area! yay!
they'll probably get the race going again... just in time for me to go to work. XD
ah well! at least I'll get to listen to it on the radio... and it may yet end up being at least partly a night race if it gets delayed long enough. :P

possibly one of the hardest things I've done in years
Posted 9 years agoif you folks have been wondering about my relative silence the past few days, well, here's why:
early last week, it became increasingly clear that my roommate's 17-year-old Siberian Husky, Forest, was in his last days.
the poor pup couldn't even stand up, and was yelping dolefully every time he tried. by Tuesday morning, he was whining even from just breathing. it was very obvious he was in terrible pain, and wasn't getting better at all. he couldn't even stay standing with our help, and had urinated all over himself and most of the downstairs hallway and his owner's room.
I convinced my roommate that it was time for Forest's suffering to end, including offering to pay for the vet's services, and, after giving the old dog a final bath, took him to a local veterinarian for...
what has to be one of the worst experiences I've ever had, including breaking my own arm twice, and attending the death of my grandfather, in person, back in the early 1990s.
Forest was in such bad shape by the time we got him to the vet that it took her and her nurse nearly 15 minutes to get a catheter inserted to deliver the sedative; his veins kept collapsing when they tried to poke the caths in. he struggled the first few times, but after that, we'd either calmed him enough to tolerate what was going on, or he no longer had the energy to bother.
as soon as a cath DID get inserted, and the vet delivered the sedative... that vein promptly collapsed. at least Forest didn't have to feel the next five minutes' worth of probing other veins, though I kept on comforting him, as I had through the ordeal leading up to his finally getting knocked out.
every breath up until the moment of his death had been accompanied by a fluttering of his jaw muscles (I'd been stroking his cheek to soothe him). the last couple, didn't have that... and then there were no more breaths to take.
yes, I did cry my eyes out. I'm glad that needles don't bother me much, as I was able to stay at Forest's side and give whatever comfort I could, up until the very last.
I hope I won't be doing anything like that again, anytime soon. he's buried in our back yard, now.
the next day, I cobbled up a cairn over the (necessarily) shallow grave we were able to dig in the hardpan out back. there's still a bit more work I can do to make it look nicer, but at least I know Forest's grave won't be disturbed by scavengers, not with 100+ pounds of decorative garden bricks on top of it.
