Account Stuffs
General | Posted 13 years agoHey, I forgot to post about this ages ago-- and that is part of the issue-- but I was going to recombine my galleries to the extent that I'm not doing a 'furry only' 'not furry only' account split, instead, posting my mainline works and commissions over at my ever main account,
tacticalsnake.
HOWEVER! I will try to keep using this account for something I tend to not post on my main account for reasons, and that is convention merch and promotion type stuff. I will continue to use this handle at cons since it's less cumbersome (as well as much easier to fit on a sign lol), and so it seems appropriate that here I shall post:
- Work done at conventions, if I receive scans
- Examples of what I shall be selling when building up to a convention, especially as my means forces me to change my offerings rather frequently, so I don't necessarily have the same stuff each con or each year at a con
- And previews of pricing tables. Yay! More incentive to do pretty pictures for those... especially because no one looks at those at the conventions, so perhaps they can be appreciated online lol.
But yeah. Things were getting irritating with the split because I don't always do work which is clearly one or the other, and I felt discouraged from doing work for one if the other had been neglected, etc. So I think this should work out better.
So again, main account is
tacticalsnake
this account will be convention related items and news only (although I will post journals about upcoming cons with links to here at the main account too).

Commission Etiquette
General | Posted 13 years agoHey everyone, I just wanted to post that I just added a short list of previously unwritten "rules" for ordering commissions from me, so if it interests you, please keep reading:
Do not fear: These rules will not affect the majority of clients.
1. Whenever payment is agreed upon to arrive, the amount must be discussed and agreed upon by the time I am to start your project. I will not do work if I do not know what the payment will be, nor will I ever assume you should know this even when ordering something standard off-the-rubric.
2. When you reserve a spot in the queue, you must wait until it is your turn before I begin, NO EXCEPTIONS. It is unfair to those before you and unscrupulous of me to push your work forward. If you needed it earlier, you should have made sure to ask me with enough time to complete previous work, if any, as well as your work-- your time table is your burden, as it is unknown to me. (the only time people might get pushed ahead is if there is an expected delay on a previous commission, in which case the next will be worked on concurrently) If I cannot do it when you need, then go to the next artist on your shortlist.
3. Do not take more than a week to get me the details necessary to begin your project. I literally cannot afford to wait for you to decide, and it is particularly unfair to any who might be waiting after you to have to wait extra time for you to decide what you want. Do not make spurious reservations: it is as disrespectful to me as it is to other clients.
It should also go without saying that I cannot work on anything if I have no idea what I'm working on.
To see them written as they will be on my commissions page, please follow this link:
http://furholt.net/tacticalsnake/commission.php
Regardless of whether or not you see yourself in these, these apply to everyone. :/ No one person was the first to call my attention to these needing listed in a more concrete manner.

A Word on the Style Changes Here
General | Posted 13 years agoNow that I've had some time to stare at the site's changes in appearance...
Why are there rounded corners on JUST image thumbnails?
Why do the borders glow around the thumbnails?
Why are the thumbnails centred in my inbox?
Why did anyone think this was a good idea?
If you're going to change the style of a site... Can you, I don't know, just do all the changes at once unless the small changes are actually useful in some way. Don't add something that needs an enormous overhaul to actually fit together and mesh as a whole with the site unless you're going to do the rest of the work at the same time!
Seriously! Of all the things that need done for the site, meaningless tweaks to its appearance shouldn't have been so high on the list. Some of the other proposed, later additions and changes are fine, like being able to disable notes for as long as you wish, if you desire, as well as being able to hide your profile from guests. These are functional and useful.
Rounded corners on thumbnails look shitty because the rest of the borders on the site are still sharp and square. The glowing borders as opposed to solid borders look tacked on, particularly because the duo color schemes don't really agree with any of the border colors. I mean, damn, you want to improve the appearance of the site? Can someone take a few minutes to figure out color schemes that don't look like ass, one dark and one light, to offer? Are we married to awful greyish-sky-blue and dull-slate-blue? Are these like, FA's colors or something? Like how dA is puke olive drab? I forget what the hell color y!Gallery is by default (some sort of moderate blue) because I've been using a custom color scheme since forever.
To be straight about it, art looks best on 50% grey-- this way, the colors are held against one another instead of being affected by the background color of the site. Other greys work fine too, but 50% or close to it is the best. This doesn't mean the site should be in various tones of grey (although with some smooth, colorful accents, it could work), but you need to make sure the color of the site doesn't interfere with the image. This is likely why dA is in those greenish grey tones all throughout, particularly behind images, so that there isn't much color to distract from the work on display. Other sites took up the monotone idea for the scheme, but used wilder colors, which fails at the possible purpose.
Dark colors will make light artwork appear washed out and blinding while dark images will sink into the site. Light colors will make light artwork just sort of melt into the background, and dark images too dense and muddy. Medium tones work for the backgrounds because then the image isn't dragged one way or another by comparison. Think of how one's views might improve for particular images if a viewer is using one color scheme or the other here.
Personally, a little bit of color here and there-- like the coded borders for images based on rating-- is fantastic. It's not distracting, but it keeps things from being too boring. Like an Ewok poking you with a spear when you were unconscious because I'm currently watching Return of the Jedi because fuck you.
And I would have sex with Wicket, no joke. Look at those luscious lips. I bet he gives great head. If you can be sure he won't bite off your dick, of course. Like Harvey Dent-- also not sure if he can be trusted not to bite the damn thing off if he goes Bad Boy Harvey or whatever. But he's got lips like soft plums, you know?
ANY WAY, I'm just saying that things look stupid now.
Centering the thumbnails is just. Stupid. It's a waste of space. Everything about the submissions inbox is wasteful. Yeah, it's not like you really need to cram shit in there or anything because there's a billion things to display, but at the same time, maybe a full page of images shouldn't need a twenty foot scroll bar, particularly if it's only a few images a day. Books don't center everything, most websites don't center everything, so it also looks rather awkward. Suddenly, a website's display methods have changed! This is irritating on mostly subtle levels, but it's still irritating. Yeah yeah, people had to practically fight me in Thunderdome back in the day to get me to switch my site's menu to the left side instead of the right since it's unusual to have it on the right (but I am left handed, so I tend to be a little swapped when it comes to sides I consider natural, although I use the mouse right handed, amongst other things, and some things I can't really settle on a hand to use, like batting at basesball, or even catching or throwing or whatever), but that was the thing: it was uncomfortable for people because they didn't even look for the menu since it wasn't where they were expecting it. In this case, it just looks unnatural and bad.
Since there is nothing really clearly denoting sections, all the negative space between elements makes everything look empty, wasted, and bloated. Due to the early 2000's style to the rest of the site, well, it just looks old. Is this interface I'm looking at right now, writing a journal, an HTML table or a CSS table? I'm too lazy and distracted by wine and Star Wars to bother with viewing the source to check, but seriously. Yes, Fur Affinity was first built in like 2004 or 2005 or something, but damn, it still looks that way, and all the update we've got is... half-assed tweaks?
I don't really mind using an ancient looking site-- The point is just trying to toss in a few modern updates while the rest of the site still looks awful makes it worse, not better. Let's not be hasty, right? Mostly I'm embarrassed that the site seems so... proud to have done these little things. :/
SEARCH YOUR FEELINGS. YOU KNOW IT TO BE TRUE.
EDIT: By the way, I meant cartoon!Harvey Dent, none of the others. I mean, you should check out B:tAS sometime and look at Harvey Dent before he was Two Face because jeeeeez those lips, also chin. I think he can call Mr Oikawa chin-less. Seriously.

Please fill out my survey on what you like to buy at cons
General | Posted 14 years agoI need you to tell me what sort of things you like to buy at conventions in the artist alley the most.
Originally, I was going to plead for descriptive answers in the comments, but then I realized it might do better to write up an easy to use survey, so here:
Snake's Stupendous Survey on Convention Consumer Habits!.
I promise it's not as business or industrial-organizational psychology as it sounds lol. Basically I just ask questions about what you look for in terms of what you buy in art from artists at conventions, from types of art to how much you like to spend to even what you want to see from the artist. Also, it's all check boxes and shit, so you won't have to labor over writing out long answers or anything. It's also not too long, and shouldn't take more than several minutes of your time (maybe five actual minutes, ten if you're really distracted. Just a guess).
I think it'd be pretty awesome if everyone who reads this fills it out, and then makes their friends fill it out, etc. The more responses the better, and a survey is nothing if it doesn't have a lot of results, for good or for ill. :3
If you'd instead prefer to just leave a descriptive comment here, that's fine, I guess... but I prefer being able to look at tabled answers.
If you think I forgot anything necessary, I can probably add it in later or in a later version, etc. Mistakes can obviously be corrected right away (I've been having issues writing the words I want to write lately without noticing immediately, so if anyone sees a completely inappropriate use of a word, please tell me because I probably didn't realize I wrote a different word from what I intended, etc).
If you did the survey and just want to leave comments here, that's cool too.

FURRY! WEEKEND! ATLANTA!
General | Posted 14 years agoI am going to be at FWA this year.
Very sudden, I know, and it was only decided upon like... ten minutes ago, I think.
But yeah, I'm gonna be there and shit, and... yeah. Very exciting. I haven't been to a convention more than five hours away from me since like... Since the last time AC was in Philadelphia lol. No joke.
So we'll see how that goes. :P
Speaking of which, anyone want to give me some pointers about Atlanta? I know I can look up the weather forecast once that weekend is closer, for example, but what should I expect as far as actual weather (is like up here, where it seriously changes every few minutes? Stable? Can I trust the forecast to a reasonable degree?), or windiness or humidity, etc? Anything I should be careful about if I decide to wander around near the convention center (a habit of mine), since I am an idiot? Anything in walking distance I should be sure to check out? These sorts of things. :P
I will now go back to waiting on laundry and looking for my sketchbook, as well as fretting over OH FUCK I HAVE NO PORTFOLIO FUCK FUCK FUCK because there is an ARTIST ALLEY and it's NOT RAFFLED and I have NO PROBLEM waiting a few hours to make sure I get on the list, so... yeah.
But I also haven't done cons in a few years? So like... I have.. nothing. to. show. I have old ass prints? But that misleading, you know. All my recent shit is generally digital and generally Pete White.
Likely I will only offer sketches anyway, see how that goes. Maybe I'll get some food money. D:

Oh
General | Posted 14 years agoPushing the one off since it's wildly inapplicable anymore.
I mean-- I am still open for commissions for a little bit longer, but like not at the prices stated in that last journal. I have long since gotten all my bullshit moved in and set up here, so yes, I can do things in the usual way again.
For reference to normal prices and offerings, see the page here (examples are worksafe):
http://furholt.net/tacticalsnake/commission.php
Beyond that, uh, yeah. Not really much else to report. lol.

COMMISSIONS OPEN
General | Posted 14 years agoI am in the middle of moving into a new place, so I am in need of money in order to get this or that for the new place (storage is a bit of an issue, for example) or to get myself an Xbox since now I no longer have a room mate whose Xbox I can use. Which, I mean, it sounds dumb but I have a controller and several games and no system, you know? I'm saving up money for the 360, but having some help would be nice lol. it's last on my list after the organizational materials and food and things, but there it is.
Since I am in the middle of moving, I can offer mostly wholly computer done items at the moment so I can do them with what I have presently (tablet, computer! On a desk with a chair, finally). I would livestream them but the software they offer is for at least OS X 10.6 while I am on OS X 10.5 and I don't have my backup drive with me in order to backup the computer first-- I'll have it in a week, though, lol. Also, not sure I can afford the $30 at the moment. :C I keep thinking I have plenty, but then I remember I still need food through the month and who knows what else might come up, so.
But yes, for the time being I am offering the following:
-- COMPUTER SKETCH: $10
-- COMPUTER DRAWING, B/W: $15
-- COMPUTER COLORING ADDED TO EITHER: +$20
Please note me here or email me ( tacticalsnake (at) gmail (dot) com ) with the subject line, Commission on either one and we can discuss the particulars there. Payment is preferred prior to starting (if a long queue builds up, I'll ask you wait until I am able to start your piece to pay me), and I can take PayPal.
Wow, that's pretty cheap digs right now! This is mostly because I do much better work when I can sketch it out on paper first, but that is a luxury I do not currently have. Besides, if I get plenty of commissions, I'll also get plenty of practice doing wholly digital work, which can be helpful in the future (there is no such thing as too many skills or techniques!).
As ever, I am super friendly to the following themes:
- Fatties
- Guro/Gore
- Macabre
- Steampunk
I am also perfectly happy to draw your characters from games, stories, whatever. All that is ever needed is references of some sort. :3
But yes! Let's do this thing! :D

Commission Information UPDATE
General | Posted 15 years ago1. I've lowered the price of digital commissions from $60 to $50.
2. I've made a form you can fill out for ordering commissions
3. Incidentally, commissions are currently closed, but you can enter the queue for the next batch anyway. I will take things from the queue five at a time and only accept payment when I am to start your image. :)
Hurrah!
Oh snap, the form is located hereabouts.

In Which I feel Like Being an Asshole
General | Posted 15 years agoSo anyone else see FCN's banner here? The one that reads, "ケモノコネキタ" ?
Can someone please explain to me why it says, コネキタ instead of, say, コネクション? If they just want connect, then wouldn't it be コネキト?
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like kemono should have been written in hiragana, not katakana, because it's not a loan word. However, this usage of kemono might be written in katakana to differentiate; I don't know.
But yeahhhhh.
And since they're using kemono for furry anyway, why not use a Japanese word for connection, too? Lots of people find kanji to be pretty enough and it takes up less space than katakana or hiragana. Of course that depends on which connection we want... Is it more appropriate to say link (so, れんけつ and I have no idea how to activate kanji on my computer, sorry. D: I used to have an app for that on my PC back in ze day), or relationship (つながり)?
Fun with a language I've largely forgotten. OH SHI-- Yeah I studied Japanese for a few years but that was years ago so while I could have written you a elementary school level tale for you then, I can barely put together a sentence now lol. I can still remember certain spelling conventions and stuff, though. D:
Oh, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it to FCN this year. Can't really skip my friday classes this semester... D: I have a stats lab on Fridays that I simply must attend, as well as a session of one of my other psych courses. Which run until 4.30. So. :/

So. :/
Uh.
General | Posted 15 years agoFirst things first, this is a new page for the intrepid
tacticalsnake. I decided I wanted to split my galleries between fanart and furry, because A. I thought the name tactical snake was silly now-a-days, and B. the tactical snake name has gotten attached more to my fan art than anything else, and I didn't want to lose that, so i decided a split was best. besides, it's got to be annoying for the people who just want the fan art to get my creeper furry porn and it's gotta by annoying for those who just want the furry porn to get the creeper fan art.
I'll see if the folder exists tomorrow so I can upload some older work so that the gallery isn't all empty and shit, but for now, I'll have this journal up so no one is all OMG THIEF or something, I dunno. I doubt I'm really that known in the fandom lol. I mostly draw creepy fan art. HERE HAVE LOTS OF CARTOON PENIS.
But not here. Here I'll just be posting my creepy furry art instead, so brace your self for gothy wolves and fabulous fatty ferrets. :DDD And viking deer-wolf-things, plus whatever other random thing I feel like drawing when I don't feel like drawing Pete White's or Ray Stantz's dicks.
IF IT'LL EVER LET ME UPLOAD ANYTHING HOLY CHRIST
Yeah, I checked the forums and someone else is actually having the same problem but no one has said anything except a very unhelpful "try again later."
I keep refreshing the post in case someone who knows something says something alas, nothing yet. DD:
Well, I'll shut up now. I think this serves well enough as a HAY THAR post. Ha ha.
