The Book You Need
Posted 13 years agoIs titled "Color and Light" by James Gurney. I'm too lazy to link it to you, but you need to read it if you do any kind of art. (And don't tell me "bawww I'm not a realist!". I'm not a realist and I learned way too much from that book anyway. My head exploded from all of the knowledge.)
Also those of you who attended AnthroCon 2010 and didn't attend one of James Gurney's panels need to be shot in the head with a gun of WTF. Seriously. The man is incredible. Don't tell me you couldn't stop fapping for 30 minutes to sit and listen to one of the greatest illustrators of our generation speak.

Keep your Stream announcements out of my Submission feed.
Posted 13 years agoSeriously. If I wanted to know you were streaming, I'd just read the Journal you posted in addition to a needless submission.
That is all.
That is all.
DAT EMERGENCY ROOM
Posted 13 years agoYup. I'm actually kinda fine now. But I had a trip to DAT EMERGENCY ROOM at 1 AM last night because I couldn't breathe thanks to my chest deciding it would be fun to become suddenly tight and painful.
So yeah, in case you were wondering where I was at 1 AM, that's where.
By the way, I'm totally using this as an excuse as to why I haven't started on art that I owe a couple people.
Go away. ಠ_ಠ

When's the last time Delaware won a NCAA Tournament game? Never? That's what I thought.

AnthroCon 2012
Posted 13 years agoNo.
Because I got a free pass for San Diego Comic Con. And free pass > non-free pass.
Also I don't want to get bearhugged by maximus-ursus again. Last time he dislocated three of my vertebrae and I couldn't stand up straight for four months.

This all comes down to the question "what's in a community?". In other words, it's not site bandwidth or spiffy layout or site traffic or whatever. It's about the people who are on there and what their interests are and whatnot. What does SoFurry offer as a community that FA can't provide?
Pr0nz? Hahahahaha...
No seriously, though. When I talk to a lot of folks on FA about why they don't use DeviantArt, they tell me it's because the admins there are discriminatory against furries (which I can tell you, as a former DA admin, couldn't be further from the truth) or because they are homophobic (likewise).
Functionally DeviantArt is a superior site in every way to FA. And that is understandable, since DA is a for-profit enterprise (DA is also free to use and has more functionality even as a free site than FA). But the perception that DA is somehow discriminating against furries and/or homosexuals is what has driven folks to set up shop here.
Oh, and they don't allow pr0nz. That much is a fact (it's in their Terms of Service). I guess that's the real reason.
Anyway, the argument I'm trying to make is that I don't believe anyone who says they are leaving FA for SoFurry because the UI is better or that SF has more traffic. And I don't believe anyone who sincerely believes SF is a "better" site than FA. FA has its share of problems, don't get me wrong (FA looks like a website still stuck in 2005, for starters), but so does SF.
SoFurry is the site formerly known as Yiffstar which up until recently had a "cum" button right next to the "fave" button. SoFurry's admins believed that recording how many people "came" to a picture or story was an integral part of the site's design. That should tell you something about the site's intended audience and the priorities of its staff.
SoFurry is also the site where art contests happen, but don't bother entering with the intent of winning if you don't plan on making your entry as blatantly homoerotic as possible.Or if you aren't giving buttsecks to and/or receiving buttsecks from an admin.
SF is as rife with drama, immaturity and ego-swelling shenanigans as FA is, if not more. A shiny new UI and more dedicated bandwidth isn't going to change any of that. The admins are still the same, and the members are still the same. The mission of the site is still the same. They just decided to put in "partitions" to try and argue that they are something more than just a furry art dump.
Anyway, I understand I lack the required "furry cred" to convey this message to a broad audience. (Probably because I don't feel like demeaning myself by whoring for attention, pandering to a niche audience who does nothing but demand more artwork so they can fap to it, or sharing pictures of my genitals to strangers.) I just hope that someone out there reads this and makes a decision for him or herself.

Just so you know...
Posted 14 years ago"I didn't use reference" is not an excuse for anatomical inaccuracies. Yes, I'm talking to you, self-proclaimed "muscle furry artists".
Reference isn't "cheating". It's not "the easy way out". It's how you create convincing anatomy. How the hell are you supposed to know how the muscles work in a given situation if you don't see what they actually do? If you're going to draw something based on human anatomy, it helps if you actually base it on human anatomy.
And when I say reference, I mean drawing from real life. Photos are good, but studies from live models are better. They don't even need to be professionals. Get your BFF to pose for you for a little while while you draw what needs referencing. Find answers to the anatomy questions you will end up having once you have your composition laid out. "How does that arm work in that perspective?" "Where is the articulation of that bone?" "How do I draw this without making it look like it's stuck together with duct tape and fishing line?"
So yeah, using reference is often harder, since you have to find the reference (or create your own), and then pull out the answers you need from it.
Now excuse me while I listen to my dog snoring loud enough to be heard over the music playing on my iPod.

STREAMING!
Posted 14 years agoNot yet. Maybe later.
Here's what I need...
A baseball cap - check (I always have one on,even in the shower)
A USB 2.0 1280x1024 webcam - still working on that
Absurd amounts of duct tape - can get fairly easily
I'm not anti-social or anything (well, not as anti-social as you all accuse me of being) but the trouble with my being able to stream is that I do 95% of my work traditionally, and the webcam I have is integrated into my laptop. And no, I'm not going to duct tape my 4.6 lb. laptop to a baseball cap.
Maybe if I had a MacBook Air. Nah, scratch that. I'm a PC guy through and through. YEAH. HATERS GONNA HATE.
Anyway, commissions for badges and/or painterly portraits are still open (they never actually closed) so I can raise some cash to cover the cost of the webcam so you all can watch methrow colors around like a madman paint.
So yeah. Commission me. DO IT!
