PHOTOMEME DRAMA D:
Posted 16 years agoOH NOES! Photo meme participants, I must un-watch them! I must wage ideological warfare using my watch-list!
Seriously, though, get over yourselves. If you un-watch me because I took part in the photo meme, good riddance. And if you un-watch me but don't un-watch some of your favorites because THEY took part in the photo meme, you're a giant swill-guzzling hypocrite who can't back up what you believe in past the need to "paw off" to furry pr0n.
The one thing I hate worse than ideological zealotry on the internet is fake ideological zealotry on the internet. At the very least, have the stones to back up what you believe in, even when it's (gasp!) inconvenient.
Grow up or get out.

Posted 16 years agoNO. GET OUT. YOUR DRAMA IS NOT WELCOME HERE!
One of the things I've always respected about the Furry Fandom is the fact that they have the courage to be who they are regardless of what other people think of them. As a result, the Furry Fandom has gained the reputation of being the haven of societal cast-offs ("send me your strange, your awkward, and your downright weird...") and proof that rule 34 is indeed true ("yes, there is porn of it somewhere, you just haven't been looking in the right places").
So it astounds me when people here act holier-than-thou, thinking their way of doing things or their way of thinking is inherently superior to someone else's. I mean, really? Elitism on FurAffinity?
FA is not an art site, it's a social network that has a distinct emphasis on art submissions. FA is not Epilogue. Most of the people who post artwork here aren't professionals (or at the very least, most of the people who post here don't do what they post here for a living). And for the most part, nobody really cares what sort of level the artists here are on in terms of skill or proficiency. If you're a good artist, great. If not, that's cool too. Everyone has to start somewhere.
I love that sort of mentality.
What really makes my blood boil is when people try to impose their own artistic standards on the people here. I mean, really? This is FurAffinity, not some high-brow artistic showcase. And the worst part is that they feel not only welcome to do so, but somehow entitled to do so by the fact that they have thousands of watchers and favorites and people who shower them with commission offers.
Chyeah.
At this point, I'm sure a few names pop into mind. I won't name them here, but I'm fairly certain you have seen them around at some point or another. Because of their large followings, they believe that they are somehow "above" the rest of the community in terms of not just artistic ability (which is suspect at times; we all know what gets attention here on FurAffinity. The more explicit your work is, the more attention you'll get), but in terms of opinions that have nothing to do with art. They start to think they are the GODS OF FURAFFINITY. Their art is, in their view, immaculate. Their thoughts and views are, in their view, irrefutable. And so often it's not WHAT they say, but HOW they say it.
People have talked to me about this very issue, and my response has been the same. If they want to talk out of their rear ends, they are certainly able to on this site without reprocussion. But as soon as they leave the sheltered little haven that is FurAffinity, reality will rear its ugly head and bite them squarely in the same rear end that they have been so used to having kissed by their squealing, drooling fans.
Truly these people are not professionals in any sense of the word. Not that I am dictating that one must be a professional to share one's opinions, but when these people spew their ignorant inane hogwash around this site it does absolutely nothing but dash their credibility and harm the site as a whole. Suppose those people really are the people who others look up to? "One day I wanna be able to draw just like _______!" I've seen it before; a few individuals were somehow flattering enough to say that about my work, even.
(No kids, you don't want to draw LIKE me, you want to draw BETTER than me.)
But of course, all of that logic goes down the window in the face of the almighty penis. Nobody cares how much of a blabbering blatherskite you are, as long as you crank out the furry porn. Such is the nature of the beast that is FurAffinity. Many challenges to what has already been established are seen upon as "he's just jealous cuz he cant draw hot ball-stretcher bukkake like u can, mr. famous artist!!!!" Credibility is earned not by what you know, but by what you draw and what you post on this site.
I've talked many times of leaving FA for that very reason. Browsing around makes my head hurt sometimes, just reading some of the things people post. The worst part for me is that they choose to remain ignorant even when the facts are placed in front of their face. They defy logic. Penis is like a religion to them; they view the ability to draw porn as the infallible evidence that what they say is right no mater how many logical arguments or factual truths are presented to them. I find it very difficult to stay in an environment where that is the case, where one's worth is somehow determined by how much sexually explicit content one posts on the site, or how many pointless comments one can generate.
One of my friends has already left this site for that very reason, in fact, and I can't say I blame him one bit. Perhaps he was lucky to leave when he did.
So that said, I am going to be me. If that means that I don't get comments of favorites or gift art or watches or whatever on here, then so be it. I'm tired of trying. I'm tired of "fitting in" to a community that allegedly prides itself on not fitting in.
That is all.

DEAR FA
Posted 16 years agoDEAR FA:
Please stop telling me about what you can do in Dragon Age Origins. You know what I'm talking about. Yeah, I already know. I have the game. You can stop now.
Also
I like cream soda.

Commission Fodder
Posted 16 years agoOver the next couple of weeks you might see me doing some work on here that you might not be used to seeing from me. The truth is I'm trying to supplement my cash with some commissions here. Hopefully some of my new work can spur a bit of commission activity.
Anyway, if there's something in particular you'd like to see me do, leave a suggestion. I don't do porn (ever, don't ask). Nudity is fine, I suppose. We'll see what comes out of it.
If you're interested in a commission, send me a note. I promise my rates are fair and affordable.
Also Bioware sure knows how to make its games hopelessly addictive.
That's all for now.

I'll give a cookie to the first person who can identify which movie that quote is from.
Also I kinda feel as such on here. On dA I'm fine. I don't know what it is about this site that makes me feel so disconnected from everyone.
For those of you who are using a pen tablet and are using Windows 7 (or considering making the upgrade), there's a way to disable those irritating "splash" animations that appear whenever you click the pen to the tablet. It's not like Vista where it was set in the Control Panel (why they felt the need to change it, I still do not know.)
Here's how you do it:
1. Open Local Group Policy Editor: Run... gpedit.msc
2. Navigate to User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Tablet PC - Cursor
3. Enable the Turn off pen feedback setting.
Voila; no more annoying feedback.
Um, that's it.

Me & My Character
Posted 16 years agoIt has come to my attention that FA is not DA.
On FA, apparently, people feel much more comfortable with someone if they know the person more "intimately". That's not to say this is an open invitation into my pants (pervs). Rather, it's an invitation to get to know me, the person, a little bit better.
My name is Darrenn E. Canton. I'm a 23-year-old Communication Arts (read: illustration) student at Virginia Commonwealth University. I've been drawing for most of my life but I only started pursuing art as a career in 2006. Furry Fandom-wise, I don't consider myself to be a furry, but I have plenty of friends in the fandom and I've been following it for the better part of a decade.
As for a "fursona" I don't really have one, so I'll go ahead and set Sforzando as a "provisional avatar". (?)
Sforzando is a walrus; 6'11" tall and weighing 435 pounds. Originally I created him to be in a comic series I was planning about a group of musically-gifted animals who were trying to stop an evil spirit from silencing their world forever (i.e. Presto the Musical Hare). In the story, he plays the trumpet and has an attack called "Brass Knuckle". The project itself hasn't gotten off the ground yet but people liked Sforzando so much (as did I) that I kept drawing him and pretty soon he started showing up in my art without the rest of his musical mates.
Being a walrus, Sforzando has quite a bit of body mass in the form of blubber which centers around his midsection. He doesn't really mind it, but he does get quite angered when others poke fun of it (the best way to tick him off is to jab him in the gut with one finger like he's the Pillsbury Doughboy). When he's not out saving the world from maliciously-minded phantasms, he's doing any odd job that requires heavy physical labor, or training. His hobbies include weightlifting, wrestling, and boxing, along with listening to brass band music, riding trains, drinking root beer floats, and eating fish tacos. His birthday is November 29th, and his favorite color is green. He loves cold weather.
Um, yeah.

lulz another journal - The business side of "Art Theft"
Posted 16 years agoAlright, I'll try to make this as short and simple as possible.
If you are planning to make a living selling furry erotic artwork online, make sure you get your business stuff in order before you start posting your work online. Otherwise some horny snotbag will swipe your work and profit from it. That's really all there is to it. If someone wants to claim their work as your own, they will, and there isn't all that much you can do to stop them short of just not posting your work online to begin with.
I know, it's sad, but it's the honest to goodness truth.
When I say "business stuff in order", I mean getting your work officially copyrighted for starters. Going down the legal avenues that will ensure that if someone actually takes your work and makes a profit from it, you'll have a legally binding argument against them.
Speaking of which, lawyer fees are expensive, and trials are time-consuming. For those of you living in the United States, cases concerning ideological property are handled in Federal court (read: lots of traveling). I sincerely doubt someone is going to make so much money off of swiping your furry porn from FA that it becomes necessary to file suit against them.
So if you think it's worth the trouble, go ahead and copyright your stuff. Save yourself the drama and the butthurt when someone inevitably pulls it down and starts trying to sell prints of it or whatever it is that they do with stolen erotic furry art.
As for the other side of "art theft", the thinks-he's-badass 14 year old who pulls down your pic and posts it on his gallery, ignore it. Report it if there's some sort of function for that on the site the pic is hosted on. Otherwise, leave it alone. At the very least, someone thought your work was good enough to swipe and post online; they sure as hell don't do that for work they think is bad.
Yeah, enough rambling.

OC Sessions are Fun.
Posted 16 years agoThey are.
Please, please do them with me. Especially on the weekends, when I get bored and need something to do other than count the tiles on my bedroom floor. Again.
Also Commissions are open. Again.
Full pencil renders of one character -OR- a mugshot/ATC in watercolour is $10.
Full watercolour render of one character is $20
Big complex watercolour painting starts at $40. Send me details for an accurate quote.
Commissions are subject to delay according to my school workload.
Also the more money I have, the more time I can spend on non-school art (i.e. stuff I post here) since I don't have to spend time finding ways to make extra cash. So commission me and everyone wins! Unless you're a Dallas Cowboys fan. Then you lose automatically.
Paypal is strongly recommended. I take checks and money orders, though I won't start working on the piece until I've received confirmation of payment.

Brutal Legend Review
Posted 16 years agoNever done one of these video game review things before, and probably never will do one again. Collector's Item! Bookmark while you can!
Brutal Legend is part hack-n-slash, part real time strategy, part sprawling adventure. It's an eclectic mix that makes for some frantic gameplay and some cool, innovative mechanics. The graphics are sharp, the soundtrack is awesome, and there's nothing quite like drop-kicking a porcupine into the face of a charging demon.
That said, I do have one major gripe with the game. The single-player story took me only eight hours to complete on Normal difficulty, and from what I've heard, Brutal difficulty isn't really all that brutal if you stop thinking of the game as a RTS. Unlike other games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, there really isn't any sort of incentive to go back and do all the little side-quests and collect all the goodies (unless you're a Gamerscore whore). The whole thing felt a bit like Fable, in that the story just went "whoosh" right by me before I really had a chance to understand what the heck was going on.
Multiplayer is fun, although there are a few balance issues that, when exploited, can make for some pretty frustrating matches. Those should be neutered when playing anything other than 1 v 1, though.
I say buy the game if you're a huge metal fan, rent it otherwise. But definitely give it a playthrough.

They say that the bad actions of a few are usually noticed far more easily than the good actions of a large number of people. I suppose my Journal was a response to those bad actions of a few. Normally I don't like to cast judgment like that but I suppose under a particular set of stressful circumstances something like that can happen to anyone.
I apologize to anyone who I insulted or offended with my last Journal.
In other news, Baltimore Comic Con was fun. Now I'm tired, and sore from having to run after buses and trains all day.

A Non-Furry View of the Furry Fandom
Posted 16 years agoLet me start off by saying I am not a furry, but I have many friends who are and I've been around the fandom for just under a decade.
The furry fandom is pretty much the Internet's proverbial whipping boy. Say what you want, deep down you know it's true. I'm not here to pile on the hate or to make fun of furries or whatnot. Again, I have plenty of friends who are furries and who are perfectly reasonable people.
This journal is not about those people.
This whole "furry meme" that has been going around has been an interesting read, not only because the idea of fursonas piques my curiosity, but because I think it's fascinating to hear what furries think about the furry fandom as a whole. It's hard to explain what I've found.
I've found a lot of negativity, a lot of whining, a lot of drama. I've found, more than anything, a lot of hypocrisy. I've always heard the Furry Fandom and how it prided itself on being open, tolerant and accepting of anyone and anything. I haven't seen much evidence of that tolerance. Tolerance goes both ways; when furries complain about how people don't "understand" or "accept" them, chances are they are more than willing to go at the throat of anyone whom they don't agree with. That's not being tolerant, that's being intolerant and hypocritical, which is worse than being intolerant and consistent.
But hey, whatever. As long as that attitude exists within the furry fandom, nobody outside of the fandom will ever look in the fandom and see anything more than yiffing, gratuitous porn, and a sinkhole of drama and hypocrisy. The fandom needs to get its act together. Seriously.
On a completely unrelated note I'll be at Baltimore Comic Con tomorrow (today?).

Dealing with Drama
Posted 16 years agoHEY LOOK KIDS, I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SOMEONE ON THIS SITE! LET ME PUBLICLY BASH AND HUMILIATE THEM! I WILL USE MY LARGER FANBASE TO SAY THINGS ABOUT THEM AND SHARE THINGS THAT SHOULD BE LEFT PRIVATE!
OF COURSE I SHOULD ALSO MAKE SURE I POST THEIR ICON AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT THIS PERSON'S AVATAR LOOKS LIKE SO IT MAKES IT EASIER FOR YOU TO FLAME THEM ON SIGHT.
gh-mongo IS A JERK. DON'T TALK TO HIM ON MESSENGER. HE'LL GIVE YOU CANCER OF THE SOUL.
WHAT? I CAN'T JUST LET THIS PERSON BE. I CAN'T JUST LEAVE IT AT THE FACT THAT HE MAY HAVE ISSUES OR HE DOES THINGS THAT I DON'T PARTICULARLY CARE FOR. NO, I MUST GO OUT OF MY WAY TO SLANDER THIS PERSON, IMPLYING THAT HE DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE A MEMBER OF THE AWESOMNESS THAT IS FURAFFINITY.
OMFG BAN BAN BAN BAN BAN HIM PLEEEEEEZ! IM ALL POPULAR AND STUFF AND ANYTHING THAT IN THE SLIGHTEST WAY INCONVENIENCES ME MUST BE RECTIFIED. BAN HIM NAOOOOO!
Seriously, kids. The one thing that makes me laugh (not a humor laugh or a pity laugh, but an epic failure laugh) is when people go out and publicly say someone is "immature", especially on a journal and especially when those people know there will be plenty of people reading. The most immature response to an immature person is to take something public because of a personal issue.
Who am I referring to? Many, many people on this site. I don't read 80% of Journals because of stuff like this. But as to who in particular (quite recently)? You're all smart people, I'm sure you can figure it out.

The ARTIST Meme
Posted 16 years agoStolen from
taoren
When did you start drawing?
Casually? Since I could hold a pencil. Seriously? Since I was 19. Before that, I studied music.
Which hand do you use for drawing?
I'm a northpaw, so I suppose I draw with my right hand.
Which is easier to draw - male or female?
Male faces, female bodies. Go figure.
Which is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
Short hair, simply because there is less of it to draw. Hair has a habit of throwing me off.
Is it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
No difference.
Is it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?
Front. Profiles throw me off.
What do you have problems in drawing?
Keeping proportions consistent, pushing contrast in value, and making figures in motion seem like they are actually in motion instead of stiff and awkward.
What do you like to draw?
Monsters... orcs, goblins, ogres, etc. Also cartoon animals.
Are you a traditional artist or a digital artist?
I love to paint by hand. That said, there are advantages to working digitally and if an assignment or a commission calls for something in a digital medium, that's what I use. If left to me, though, I'd prefer to work with traditional mixed media.
Where do you start drawing from?
Basic skeletal features: the spine, the collarbone, the skill, the pelvis, and the legs and arms. I flesh figures out from that basic framework.
What is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
I get into details far too early in the drawing process. I'm a very impatient person in terms of art so I constantly have to pace myself and slow down or else my work suffers.
Any tips for coloring/shading?
-Observe. Learn. Try it out in your own work. If it works, great. If it doesn't, try something else.
-Complimentary colours are in shadows. Yellow light creates violet shadows. Green light creates dark red shadows. Blue light creates brown shadows, etc.
-Use those compliments to darken colours instead of black, and you'll get a more natural-looking shadows.
-The closer something is to a light source, the darker the corresponding shadows will be. The further away something is, the lighter the shadows will be.
-Three-dimensional objects are made up of planes; each plane has a value. More subtle areas of shadow can be found in those planes.
-Shut up and draw! All the stuff I just wrote means nothing if you don't study and practice.
How long does it take to finish a piece of art?
Too long. Full paintings take anywhere from 9 to 20 hours of painting time, meaning 2 to 6 days of work.
What music do you listen to while you draw?
Classical music, or anything that fits the mood of the picture I'm working on.
How long does it take you to come up with an idea?
Anywhere from an instant to several months. Ideas come and go. Sometimes they come, then go, then come back with coffee and donuts, ready to be put to use.
Your favorite drawing utensils?
Pencil and paper. Painting-wise, I use whatever works, though I have a preference for watercolours on good Twinrocker Cold-Press paper.
Your favorite color/the color that you use a lot?
Brown.
Your favorite style(s)?
lol
Are you satisfied with your current art?
No.
What kind of artist are you aiming for?
Book illustrator, or whatever.

THE ANSWER!
Posted 16 years agoI realized I didn't answer my own question in my last Journal. Maybe because I'm a dillweed.
Rocko's fighting style would be somewhere between Yun Seong from Soul Calibur and Yashaoh from Asura Blade.
This also made me realize I don't really say all that much about my characters here on FA.
...
Yeah, that's all for now.
