More proof that I'm not a "nice guy".
Posted 16 years agoTo my knowledge there are 0 people who have me listed as one of their "favorite artists" on their profiles here. And you know what? That bugs me. It really does.
I know it shouldn't; that I shouldn't give a dump what other people think about me. But I do. And it bugs me. But I guess three years of not pandering to people and then three months of making a pitiful attempt to pander to people results in nobody really liking your work enough to say "Hey, that GH-Mongo fellow's alright, I like his stuff enough to say he's one of my favorites." I reckon I've just spared the people who were gonna say "It's FA, what do you expect?" the time and energy they would have spent typing out that very sentence, which again makes me question why I'm on here to begin with.
So yeah, that's what it is. That's how I feel about it. Now that the cat is out of the bag I will now retreat back into the un-nice depths of my mind until I feel like writing another Journal here.
Take care of yourselves.

Presto the Musical Hare
Posted 16 years agoYeah, I dunno how interested people would be in this (people here, at least), but I'm posting it here because I felt like it. Originally it was supposed to be a comic designed to teach children about music. It's been something I've been mulling over for a while (and by "a while", I mean "for the past eight years on and off"), but haven't really done much with aside from create a few character profiles. One of them you might recognize, actually.
First, there's Presto the Hare. Tall, lanky, plays the keyboard. He is very energetic, but sometimes that energy can get the better of him and he can act without thinking things through. He's the main protagonist of the story. He has the ability to move very, very quickly.
Next there's Largo the Terrapin. Short, slow, scatterbrained, but wise and venerable violist. He acts as Presto's mentor and usually keeps the hare from doing anything too unreasonable. He has the ability to slow down time, but not to stop it (more on that later).
After that there's Arpeggio the Sparrow. He's more even-tempered than Presto, but still exciteable occasionally. He is quite cynical and has a dry sense of humor. He has the ability to fly, plays the guitar, and wears goggles whenever he's not indoors.
The three of them are the original "Musical Crusaders", who I created one day while I was bored in math class back in 2002.
Sforzando the Walrus and Rondo the Platypus are recruited into the ranks of the Musical Crusaders later. Sforzando plays the trumpet (the original idea was that he played the bugle), and Rondo plays the oboe. Sforzando is mellow for the most part, unless someone threatens his family or friends. His powers are his great physical strength and stamina, along with the ability to create shockwaves with his fists (Bugle Blast). Rondo is somewhat enigmatic, but she has a perfect photographic memory and perfect pitch (useful in a world where everything revolves around music). She has a bevy of strange abilities; I'm not sure even she knows what all of them are quite yet.
The bad guys were what held me up. Fermata the Wolf, I know, is the main bad guy now. He has changed quite a bit from day one until now (originally he was a bobcat, I believe, and he had a really weird name). He can "silence" anything (sort of like the Medusa turning someone to stone). He is tone-deaf, and the thought of music makes him cringe, so he is out to eliminate music from the world so he doesn't get such a blazing migraine all the time. Crescendo the Steer can deafen his targets with rumbling percussion, and Coda the Chameleon can sneak up on his targets and stop them right in their tracks. There are more bad guys for me to make, so this is a running work in progress.
Everyone in the story is named after a musical term that has some sort of bearing on their personality or physical traits. When I thought this up, I was going for a strange sort of mix between Sailor Moon, Oscar's Orchestra, and Darkwing Duck. Only with explosion-causing brass instruments and guitar-strumming sparrows.
Well, just one of each.
Um, yeah.

Furry Popularity
Posted 16 years agoAh yes, the age-old goal of seemingly everyone on this site - the pursuit of popularity. And the more people talk about not wanting it, the more I see they are flat-out lying and whoring for attention.
What's wrong with attention? Nothing, actually. Having an audience is most definitely a good thing. But what do you do with that audience once you've found it? Well, that's a question only you can answer.
If the answer is "popularity whoring more to make myself feel better about myself", then I don't really have an answer. Who knows? Perhaps your self-esteem hinges on how a bunch of strangers on a furry social networking site respond to your artwork (or music, or literature). Again, I can't answer that. It would just be sad if that's the way it turns out to be, but it is what it is.
Personally, I don't subscribe to that method of thinking. And as I've found myself spending more and more time here, I've had to ask myself what the benefits of doing so are. I've found I've given myself a migraine on more than one occasion trying to understand what makes someone "popular". It defies reason, often times, that the sex appeal of one's character trumps everything else. I've had a bit of personal experience with that when people who would normally ignore me online suddenly had a burning desire for Brox and conveniently remembered that I do indeed exist.
It's a very selfish methodology, and when I say that, I mean "screw you I don't fap to that so I'm ignoring it!", or "yes it's hawt plz drop what ur doing so I can paw off to it!" And as much as I know people want to admit it, that's what it is. Now there's nothing wrong with it; that's simply business as usual here on FA. But anyone who says that's not how it works is either naive or straight-up lying.
No more tutorials, no more streaming demos. Not here, at the very least. I've had it with trying to bring something of value (or at least what I consider to be "value", and that sure as hell is not "murry purry yiff art") to this site. I was guilty of being one of those people who tried telling myself that's not how FA works, but I was lying to myself and I knew it. So I really don't care if I'm not "popular". To me, it's not worth it.

An Interesting Predicament
Posted 16 years agoAlright, so you guys know I'm doing a walkthrough of my pic of Sforzando completely manhandling Radrab. It's mainly for the group #watercolorists over on DA, but I was wondering if there was anything specific you wanted me to cover in terms of the walkthrough itself. Speak now, or forever hold your peace. Or at least until I get bored enough to do another full walkthrough on a painting.

[RANT] "The Best Muscle Furry Artists"
Posted 16 years agoSo recently I decided to go check out "that thread" on "that site" that someone referenced and was upset that his name was not among the list of fap-fodder artists (again, I had to remind myself not to be overly cynical and add quotation marks) listed there, if only to justify my suspicions about said list. And you know what? I was right.
I won't name names. I'll never name names. But really, I could have predicted the names almost to a Tee before I even registered. So yes, it's probably the list of artists (again, resisted that urge. Do I get a medal for good sportsmanship?) you are thinking of.
I have gripes concerning many of the "artists" (Nobody's perfect. I'll return that medal now.) that are mentioned in "that thread" on "that site". One about a $30 commission I paid for in September and haven't heard a word about since, all while the artist does a u-stream a night doing gift art for the same people again and again. One about an accusation that I was a "prude". One about charging $50 for a sketch when his understanding of basic principles like proportion, perspective, and anatomy are rudimentary at best. Another concerning play-doh-esque figures with penises attached and how said "artist" (Whoops, I did it again) feels the need to cast judgment while being somehow unable to admit the fact that his work is not some triumph of humanity on par with Leonardo da Vinci.
Don't get me wrong. Some of the guys mentioned in "that thread" are good friends of mine. Some are cool, some are alright. But a good number of them make my blood boil just thinking about them. Many of them throw stones in their glass houses of arrogance and fantard-ism. And a good lot of them are guilty of what I call "pigeon-holing"; staying put with one thing and never trying to challenge themselves with something different. (Hence the fantardism, and the blank stares I get from some when I request they draw something than just a generic-looking overmuscled body with some furry hear or another pasted onto it.)
And then I went on to said "reasons" why these were "the best muscle furry artists", and some of them made me laugh. Usually I don't argue with opinions, I just present my own, so here it goes: I am not impressed by most of the work of most of those "artists" that have been posted on "that thread" on "that site". And not because I'm "jealous of their talent" or I wish I could be that "famous". The reason I am not impressed is because I see nothing in the way of skill, vision, or creativity that would make me impressed by most of that work. It is derivative, it is predictable, and it is elementary. And for many, many of those artists, the work they are doing today is right on par with the work they were doing a decade ago when I first started following their work.
The sign of a great artist is the desire to improve and grow. The ability to challenge himself or herself, to take every opportunity to become the best artist he or she can be. And when certain individuals would rather attack someone for pointing out a flaw in their work than to admit their work is not perfect, they stop being "artists" to me. But hey, don't take my word for it. Look for the artists who are always trying to improve, and watch them improve. In fact, watch them become better than some of those "artists" listed in "that thread" on "that site".
Do it. I dare you.

Play-ins are lame, so we just have the 64 here.
Keep an eye on when this thing is going to start. It should be crap-tacular fun.

LOL Yeah...
Posted 16 years agoToday I was reminded why I keep thinking about leaving FA. Again.
I've always had a love-hate relationship with this site, to be honest, and over the years it has been more "hate" than anything else. I've just never felt entirely comfortable here. Like I don't fit in somehow to what people expect.
Why am I here? Because I have friends who are here. And a lot of those friends want me to post work here. Recently (let's say, the past two months or so) I thought it would also be a place where I could make some supplemental income without having to worry so much about all the stuff that comes with, you know, a "conventional" part-time job.
I now see that is impossible, given my current state of mind (which is probably not going to change save for a massive blow to the head with a large, blunt object) along with my current state of affairs (which only changes when I'm not in class).
I could state the reasons why I feel the way I do about the fandom and why I feel commissions here are not a viable use of my time. I could say why it is I don't particularly care for the "hierarchy" of artists and how anything remotely critical is taken as an insult. I could also tell everyone to "grow up" and learn to take a bit of constructive criticism once in a while, but I gave up doing that a long time ago...
Until very recently, that is.
(And now I am reminded once again that trying to get other artists to improve is beyond my capabilities. I suppose spending time trying to help others is truly a waste of my time. Even if the artists themselves appreciate it, I am sure I will step on someone's toes inadvertently and there will be hell to pay for it on my end. It happened a long time ago, and I vowed it wouldn't happen again. But inevitably I slipped up, and now the result is a clear reminder.)
I could go on for pages and pages about how this irks me to no end. How every time I log into this site, it is a struggle for me to keep my opinions to myself, because I know that if I share them, it will only result in a firestorm of drama and butthurt-ness. I often say my cynicism will be the death of me; my need to share my opinions will only get me into trouble and burn bridges and all that metaphorical cliche stuff that you are all thinking right now as you are reading the words I write on my Journal.
So yeah, there it is. I guess this would be a good time to ask the audience whether or not it would like to live under the illusion that I really am a nice person or to believe that I am just another cynical, overbearing, dogmatic pr0n-hater. Or maybe it's somewhere in between? Who knows? I don't. Do you?
Where do I go from here? I don't know. We'll have to see. All I know is that it is what it is. Take it or leave it.

I used to be able to play that song on the violin many, many years ago. (Like, 6 or so.)
Those of you who ask why I didn't go into music ask a very good question. The answer is that I figured out music wasn't something I loved enough to do for the rest of my life. For me, music was something I could do to impress others and get cheers and smiles, but not something that, at the end of the day, I went to bed feeling good about myself for. It didn't give me the same feeling that painting or drawing did. Ultimately, I chose pursuing happiness over pursuing something that I knew I could do and be good at. I took a risk, and hopefully there will be a reward when all is said and done.
See, my Journals aren't all pointless blabberings.

Ask Sforzando a question...
Posted 16 years agoAnd you will get an answer.
Ask anything.
Go!
(Yeah... really, I have nothing better to post here.)
