A loyal, dependable, informative, enlightening asshole. At least I try to be.
The furry fandom prides itself on being "different" and celebrating diversity. As someone who has been following this fandom since 2001, I have seen it become more and more of a homogeneous blob, where assimilation is encouraged ("why can't you just be nice?!"). Feigning tolerance is just another form of assimilation. The more time I spend on this site, the more I find it to be true.
What makes me laugh is when someone says "I thought you were different, but no, you're just an asshole". Because honestly, I don't see too many assholes on this site. Other than myself, of course.
Expecting an introduction other than "Hey buddeh <3 Hows it going buddeh...Im [REDACTED]...real name is [REDACTED]" somehow makes me an asshole. I'll accept that.
Demanding accountability for one's actions also makes me an asshole. Calling out an artist who is eight months behind on a commission and refuses to respond seriously to my notes and inquiries clearly makes me an asshole. Taking issue with someone who blocks me on their page but continues to attack me on mine? Asshole-worthy, for certain.
Not gushing details about my personal life to anyone who decides to add me on messenger apparently makes me an asshole too. Answering questions with one-word replies when only one-word replies are needed is asshole-like in nature. Typing in complete sentences is the quintessence of assholery.
Writing self-depricating, snarky Journals takes the cake, though, when it comes to being an asshole. Social commentary on the fandom is only something that assholes do. Hmm, what else do assholes do? Is there anything I missed?

Yes, but they're stuffed because I ate a whole half-rack of ribs from the best barbecue joint in Richmond, VA (Buz and Neds. Ronnie's is a close second in my book, but trying to compare the two is futile because it's comparing Memphis-style wet ribs to Texas-style dry rub ribs. Only if there are measures in place to ensure the well-being of the baby.

Honestly, some people take this site way too seriously. They get proxy accounts or "fanbois" or what not to do their flaming for me after I give them a chance to state their grievance and they use it to write "bawwwwwwwwwwwwww" on my Journal after they block me.
For the record, I've been "raided" by 7chan twice. So no, you mr. "fanboi" aren't going to strong-arm me off of this site. And you sure as hell aren't going to pull that shit on DA. So move along. Posted 15 years agoI suppose a more detailed explanation is in order. Namely, a "why". There were a number of contributing factors that led to my decision, and I can't single out one that was the defining reason. So I'll TLDR you one last time.
1) A reinvention. My figure drawing professor at Montgomery College said once that artistic development is a series of reinventions. Some can be gradual - over the span of months or years, and some can be sudden. Over the past four years I have been on this site, the art I post here has gradually evolved into something I am not proud of at all. A sudden reinvention was in order.
2) My audience had changed. With a few exceptions, most of my watchers here are interested in seeing one thing and one thing only. And they pressure me to do that one thing, even when I am not comfortable doing it. Of course, that was a catalyst towards my sudden reinvention and my decision to remove my prior work. All of it.
3) Friendships need to be "reciprocal". I had made the decision to reinvent some time ago. In fact, I had made the decision in 2008 but "friends" talked me into staying on numerous occasions. It disheartened me greatly when one set of friends decided to nonchalantly block me when they deemed convenient, then un-blocked me and acted as though nothing had happened. Others would only show their heads when I posted something "provocative".
At some point I had made the realization that I have very, very few true friends on this site. I could probably count the number on both hands. I once told weaselzero that the reason to stay somewhere is that there is something there that you cannot find anywhere else. The thing I have here that I don't have on DA is a viewer base that is only interested in seeing mature-themed artwork (or at least something to sate their fetishes). A viewer base comprised mostly of watchers that look at something for five seconds then +fav it, adding it to their fap-dumpster. And I realized that I do not need that audience. They offer me nothing but empty flattery between their constant clamor for "moar!" and "<3". It is related somewhat to number 2 in that "friends" were just "watchers with needs".
I will admit that the friends I have made on FA have been very close to me, but the truth is, most of them are also on other sites such as DA. Hopefully they'll continue to follow me there.

Selfish Arrogance
Posted 15 years agoHow much of it exists on FA? I just saw a Journal that read "Post a comment and I'll rank how sexy your fursona is to me". Yeah, because someone really needs to be told "YOUR FURSONA DOES NOT GIVE ME A HARD-ON. U FAIL".
It's just indicative of the prevalent mindset on this site. How many times have you read a comment that said "Oh murrrr" or "<3" or what not? How does that help the artist? What does it contribute to the overall discourse anyway, other than informing everyone who views that picture that you find that picture sexually evocative?
The answer is nothing. Absolutely nothing. It's a demonstration of arrogance and selfishness and the need for attention. As is constant "we need moar of this!" or "PLZ DRAW MOAR BROX HE IS HAWTTT" or whatever the heck it is people say when they need a porn fix but can't for the life of them do it without making their needs publicly known.
Selfish.
Arrogance.
And this site enables it.

I honestly have to say that this debate is something I've been trying to get across for years. Not with my high-minded narrow view of the world, but with reason and substance. It seems as though those things are toxic to a good portion the furry fandom (really, is it so hard to read an argument and consider it without going off the deep end?), but me being the eternal optimist that I am, I'll try and try again.
So here it goes.
There is a difference between art and smut. Or shall I say, low-brow images meant to invoke sexual arousal and nothing more. It seems as though many in the furry fandom are completely oblivious of the difference, and are happy to lump them all together in one gigantic pile, judging both by the same criteria.
That's part of the reason why this thing is my most favorited piece on FA, followed by more mature crap that I'm not proud of in the slightest. And that's also part of the reason why people keep asking to do more of that kind of stuff. Because they honestly don't know any better.
If I were to put that sort of thing in a professional portfolio - any sort of professional portfolio, the art director or editor who I showed it to would take one look and shake his or her head, then move on. Why? Because it's honestly low-brow crap. It's not very good. I know it. They know it. But people on FA don't know it, because they're attuned to smut.
I'm getting off on a tangent.
I have nothing against erotic artwork. This isn't about whether showing genitals in artwork is somehow "bad" or "wrong" or what have you. It's about conveying a message, creating a statement. And the difference between art and smut is the conscious effort put into the message being conveyed. It's a matter of craftsmanship, a matter of dedication, a matter of technique. It's about creating the best image one can produce, putting the time and energy into that image to invoke a feeling by means of visual stimulus. It's about making the audience feel something different - something only that artist can accurately convey in one specific way.
Don't believe me? Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres was a master of erotic artwork in his day and age. He learned how to exaggerate anatomy and integrate symbolism to full effect, leading the viewer's eye throughout the image with his impeccable use of composition.
("Ewww boobs do not want"? Grow the fuck up. If you claim to be knowledgeable enough to talk about art, you should at least grow a set of real balls to learn how to look at something that you don't find sexually arousing without wetting your pants or throwing a hissy fit. But that's another rant for another day.)
But rather than compare that to certain popular FAartists image-makers (in particular, one who renders overly muscular plasticy-looking 3D personages with no real understanding of anatomy, composition or discernible differences in facial expressions, or one who has the gall to charge $50 per sketch without any artistic ability whatsoever including knowledge of anatomy, perspective, proportions, or foreshortening), I'll hold my tongue out of decency. Don't think I'm not beyond tearing them several new ones in the process of exposing the glaring flaws in their work that they have the audacity to call their "styles".
And please don't give me that crap about how "art is something everyone can appreciate". It's not. I don't like being the bearer of bad news, but it simply isn't true. If it were true, then FA wouldn't be full of one-sentence comments like this one. Enjoy? Sure, everyone can enjoy a piece of artwork, but to truly appreciate it, the viewer must understand what all went into its creation. Every decision that was made from concept to finish. Composition, hierarchy of elements, color palette, value structure.
Of course that's not to say one can't learn those things. And that's not to say burgeoning artists who are just starting out are guilty of being "smut-whores" simply because they don't know the finer points of composition and other artistic principles. You don't have to go to art school to learn what a value structure is. But again the difference between "art" and "smut" comes in, and it has to do with the audiences - the audience of a piece of smut generally doesn't care if they don't know what "value structure" means as long as it's "fappable" or "yiffy". And it applies to theartist image-maker as well; he or she might know how to render a penis in impeccable detail, but the work as a whole suffers from the artist image-maker's lack of critical decision making as to things like value structure, hierarchy of elements, and composition. It's not a piece of art, it's a rendering of a penis attached to a figure with no regard for anything else.
So yeah, that's it. If you are offended, then get over yourself. Being offended for the sake of popularity might work on FA, but I dare you to try that sort of stunt anywhere else and see how far that gets you. If you want to turn this into drama, then go read a book or something. Or stop fapping to furry porn and go outside.
