Egotists
Posted 10 years agoIf there's one thing I can't stand, it's the egotistical assholes who insult those who don't agree with their opinion. These people are so deluded that they have no idea that subjectivity is. For example, there's this asshole I encountered who said that if you like Sonic 2 than Sonic 3, you're nostalgia biased. What ensued was him bitching about Sonic 2 and defending Sonic 3 to the death. Many of his complaints were trivial or subjective and he kept saying I was defending Sonic 2 saying it was the best game ever and that I ignored criticisms.
That couldn't be further from the truth.
He was projecting. Badly and most of my comments were about calling him out on his shit and he still doesn't realise that his experience does not equal everyone else's. I could go on about the whole thing but I'll just get to the point.
These people are one of the reasons why fanbases and gaming culture has such a cancerous image, because of fanbrats like these assholes who dont know that they have their heads so far up their rectum.

A review of Undertale (potential spoilers)
Posted 10 years agoREAD AT YOUR OWN RISK
Yeah this game has succeeded in getting my attention
Ok lets get the negatives out of the way first. The first negative is the message that the game and the creator is trying to push. I've done a rant about it so I'll link it below.
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/7082661/
The second negative is the music looping. Some of the the music loops are awful. For example, in the area 'Waterfall' it contains a beautifully haunting theme but for some odd reason, the song fades out, stops for a split second then plays at the beginning again. Other tracks do not have proper transitions to the start of the track. It's jarring to say the least
Additionally, the animations are inconsistent. By that I mean who gets them. Many enemies in the game move, some more than others but a few do not at all. Same with the boss monsters. Every boss after Toriel and Papyrus move. Undyne and sans get a lot of attention to animation compared to the others. It's very jarring to see Toriel and Papyrus look like statues. I would've liked to have seen Papyrus move when his 'special attack' was stolen by a dog. It would've been a great 4th wall joke, jokes that are one of the games selling points. But no, he's as stiff as a board.
Furthermore, the game can throw in a, what I like to call, 'Dick move ultra' here and there. For example, I have seen many accounts of people thinking that they need to weaken Toriel then spare her since she does say to the player to prove their strength. What happens is that you critical hit her, she dies and you can never obtain the true ending.(unless you do some file gymnastics)
Finally, the length of the game. It was very short and I feel that hindered the story a little. There wasn't enough time for the characters and the underground to be more fleshed out.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, Undertale is a very good game regardless. All of the characters are memorable for what short time they had. I mean for goodness sake!
"Undyne suplexes a boulder just because she can!"..........during battle!
The writing (disregarding the agenda pushing messages) is great for what it is. I was laughing, freaking the hell out the whole way through and in certain cases, was tearing up. Though I do feel that the 4th wall writing is a catch-22, when it does it well, it really does it well. This game can get disturbing as hell to downright depressing to downright touching. When it wants to convey a theme, the execution was spot on.
After playing this I honestly can't bring myself to do a genocide run for the other story or the challenging bosses. Two reasons:
.Because I don't want to kill these characters
.THE GENOCIDE RUN IS FUCKING CREEPY! Fuck walking through deserted towns with slower, more haunting versions of the themes you hear in game. I don't want to see "But nobody came..." in this regard. Sends shivers down my spine.
Ahem............anyway
The OST is............well amazing. I love tracks like 'Waterfall', 'Enemy Approaching', 'Megalovania' and 'Your best nightmare' to name a few.
The gameplay is not exactly unique but it isn't similar to many turn-based rpgs. The battle system uses a shootem-up, bullet hell style defense system where you, like in a bullet hell, dodge incoming projectiles so you don't get hurt. You can either fight or spare your enemies. What I like about this is that there are creative ways to spare your enemies, like Tsundeplane. Yes....................Tsundeplane. In order to spare it, you have to get close to her attacks but not too close. This is shown in the attack area with an incoming plane-shaped projectiles surrounded by a green aura. You must move your SOUL to the green aura enough times until the enemy is comfortable and then you can spare them. What I don't like about this is that the game has random encounters...............sort of so this kind of system can get repetitive and tedious.
To sum this up, Undertale is a a game that shows that it had dedication put to it. Is it perfect? Far from it but for the asking price of £6.99, I feel that you get your moneys worth though I do not blame you if you want to wait until a sale. With it's great writing and interesting gameplay, I feel that it's an indie game worth having a look at.

After playing Undertale.......... (it hasnt even been a day)
Posted 10 years agosans..............He's my favourite character. He's funny but incredibly creepy
Spoilers
I mean very creepy. In a pacifist run, which I did, Sans says to you that if he didn't make a promise to that old woman, he'd kill us where he stood. One, since this is near the end of the game, its creepy that this cheerful guy had it out of you right at the beginning.
Two....
..........Genocide run sans......Do I even have to say anything more?
Imagine fighting him at your current pacifist state.
Hey, he may be the weakest stat wise and lazy at face-value. The game just doesnt outright tell you that he:
-fires a barrage of lasers when you fight him
-Switches between blue and red at random
-Ignores invincibility frames
-Poisons you
-Knows about "SAVE" and can use it
-Has a secret lab
-Can teleport at will
,,,,,among other things
This lazy skeleton is the most powerful character in the game. He knows what you've done; he does a morality check on you near the end of the game.
Should I also mention he fucked with the abomination that is flowey and caused said abomination to reset multiple times?
So take it from me. Don't fuck with sans. If you do.....
Well.......
You're gonna have a bad time...

A rant regarding Undertale, it's creator, some of its fans..
Posted 10 years ago....and the indie scene in general.
Ok. Undertale. It's a pretty good short game from what I've seen. I do like the options of combat you have, The music is great although some of the songs suffer from 'mobile phone game looping syndrome' and to be honest, it's just that. It's not some "Holy shit, this game is perfection guys. SO real, so moral etc etc etc". It's just a good game. Toby Fox dodged one bullet there with how he wrote the characters but this brings me to my rant.
I have a huge issue with Undertale's message, the message that the creator is trying to send and the various fans who take the game WAY TO LITERALLY! It's just a game. Why the fuck should this game shame me for being a completionist, for choosing the option to be good or evil. For that matter, the way the game is set up, it's bullshit for first time players who don't know how to get the true ending. If they kill someone accidentally, no true ending for you (If I'm wrong, tell me in the comments below but I do know that this applies to those who kill everyone in sight the first time aka, the Genocide run)
The message to me is that Toby Fox wants to lead some sort of Helen Lovejoy moral crusade in gaming by bashing people with a stick for being curious, for being a competionist and for fighting in games. In one interview, he sounds no better than the few religious nutjobs who scapegoat games for the worlds issues. This kind of moral high-horse, preachy, pretentious holier than thou, hipster, Social Justice Warrior mentality is rearing its ugly head in the indie scene. This whole "YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD FOR HAVING FUN FIGHTING EVEN THOUGH IT'S A VIDEO GAME, IT'S FICTION AND HAS NO REAL IMPACT TO SOMEONE'S PERSONALITY!" is bullshit. Plain and simple. And this isn't even getting to how bad he bastardised how rpg's even work.

(I hate linking this bullshit site but I have no choice in this case)
"Why can't we just talk our problems in games?"
"Why does we fight in games? It's wrong and it affects people in real life"
"We need to lead a campaign to change this"
To me, people who make these comments are devoid of any sense of reality. They don't realise that art imitates life and it seems the creator of Undertale does not realise that himself. Listen, there are many, many times in real life where fighting is the only choice otherwise you're going to be seriously hurt or in the worst case, die, no matter how badly you want to avoid fighting. This is self-defense from people who will attack others and will not listen to reason. That is what a lot of characters do in nearly every game with combat. Defend themselves. From people or monsters who want their blood and will take no compromise. I'm not saying "all you can do is fight everyone", I'm saying there are instances in life where you have no choice but to defend yourself.
Who do these people think they are to tell me how I should play my game? How far up their own rectum are they to think they have this kind of power? This kind of mentality is poison to the indie scene and the gaming community in general. No one should have that kind of power, to dictate what should be enjoyed and guilt trip someone by reminding them again and again with what they done through locking them out of the best ending. If you want people to feel guilty by the writing alone in that game alone then that's fine. It's your game Trying to spread some sort of moral crusader message by making people feel guilty for what they do in other games and locking them out of an ending for just being curious is something I cannot agree with. I can't stop people from doing this but I sure can criticise them for their actions This kind of pretentiousness needs to stop but it's growing in the indie scene.
And various fans of this game? Please stop trying to apply this game to real life. It's a game with fictional characters. They're not real. Stop acting as if they are real, that you are better than those who don't choose the pacifist route. Yes, the game is emotional but so are many others in many ways. And I'll say it again, it's a game. You have no right shaming others, saying they deserve the guilt for being curious. (I've seen the comments on various youtube videos; there are fans who take the game way to literally)
This has been on my mind for a while and it's been egging me. So this was just me pouring my thoughts on Undertale on this journal. I'll end it with this. Toby, you made a game with good writing and allowed people to get attached to the characters of the game you made. The message that you tried to push and the bastardisation of RPG's though is something that needed to be called out.
