iPhone Tethering
General | Posted 16 years agoAlright, so...
Many of you know I have an iPhone, and it's become the phone I love to hate and hate to love. It's a great piece of hardware, but the iPhone is impossibly buggy at times. It's a very mixed bag at times.
When the iPhone came out they promised tethering would be a feature of the phone, yet never delivered. Sort of like MMS. For those not in the know, tethering is the ability to hook your phone up to your laptop/desktop and use it as a portable modem. Tethering is NOT a new feature and has been used on phones for over half a decade.
I already pay AT&T for a mobile aircard, but the idea I could have the ability of an aircard built into my phone is nice (and money saving!). So I, like /many/ iPhone users, ran a profile update that enabled tethering (see above). It does not "hack" the phone, it does not change the OS in any way, it just adds a small profile update that edits carrier data (this file can easily be overwritten).
http://gizmodo.com/5295053/how-to-easily-enable-tethering-and-mms-on-iphone-30
Recently, I upgraded my iPhone firmware to 3.1 (and I'd honestly forgotten at that time I'd edited the carrier profile to allow tethering). Since that time, whenever I tried to access any data, apps would crash, anything that required data would not go through, etc. It'd take launching my apps 2 or 3 times before they'd recognize there was a data connection available and even then it would run brutally slow. I could make calls, but data of any sort was incredibly unreliable.
I work right next to an Apple store, so on my way home from work yesterday I just ran in there to ask a question. I walked in, explained my situation, and an Apple "Genius" (the most pompous name ever) asked me right off if I had enabled tethering. Oh. Yes. That. I'd forgotten about that. The "Genius" informed me that Apple's latest firmware had "fixed" tethering, and then he politely asked me to hand over my phone so he could cancel my warranty.
Wait, what?
Yep. Cancel my warranty.
Apparently, what I did was the equivalent of jailbreaking an iPhone (it's not) and the "Genius" wanted to cancel my warranty for further support. Updating a carrier profile is by far from "hacking" a phone. Luckily, the "Genius" informed me what he wanted to do before he had my phone in hand (thanks!). I left the store and went home. About an hour ago, I noticed I was able to delete the tethering profile (it's right under settings) and magically my phone's ability to use data was conveniently restored. Huh.
Apple's latest firmware had all but disabled my phone from using web data to stop tethering.
Updating carrier profile is as far from hacking as you can get. I know Apple is a very, VERY controlling company, but to outright want to cancel my warranty over that? Seriously? I could see if it was "we won't support your phone" over a small profile edit, but this isn't the equivalent of jailbreaking.
So, lesson learned. I can't say, looking back, I'm REALLY surprised, but... the way the "Genius" wanted to handle it left a bitter, bitter taste in my mouth.

Chewfox
General | Posted 16 years agoFirst and foremost, I'd like to openly apologize for my actions tonight. Due to the entire issue, I acted out of angst and said some things in the heat of frustration that I now regret. I'm not going to pretend I didn't, nor cover it up.
It was out of line, and for that I do apologize. You deserve better.
That said, regarding the issue as to Chewfox's ban - Chewfox was banned (temporarily) to prevent drama against her and for site stability. Due to the overwhelming response generated by the issue the site crashed and was offline for roughly half an hour, followed by the forums. The amount of traffic generated in a small amount of time nearly took the site offline not once, but twice. Essentially it acted like an internal DOS due to the amount of drama and chaos that was created. Given the site outage, I reacted in a poor manner regarding the issue. The ban, as I explained to Chewfox via e-mail, was a temporary action until the general and problems could subside and people could have a chance to cool down.
No, I do not agree with Chewfox's actions and I will openly state as such. That said, I do not agree with the open trolling of Chewfox on FA (and yes, I am aware I broke down to the same level of immaturity as well).
Again, I will not deny my fault.

Art Wanted - FA United!
General | Posted 16 years agoHowdy folks!
I'm working full steam on the FA: United site, and I'm in need a few awesome artists to help contribute to the site. Our 2010 theme is "Gamers United", and we've got special guests from the gaming industry and others stopping by to offer panels, discussions and much more. So, because of that, we need art to use on the site to help show off the goods!
So we need a few helpful hands to lend us their creative hiveminds to flesh out the site.
Send your submissions in to: dragoneer[at]furaffinity.net
Art Requirements:
* Art must have NO BACKGROUND
* New, original art preferred (but we'll except older art if it's equally as awesome). Must not be edits of copyright art
* NO COPYRIGHT CHARACTERS! But cosplay is just fine!
* Must involve a gaming theme (PC/console) and/or fursuiting
* Art must PG-13/family friendly
* Art sent in may be considered for use for the FA: United 2010 conbook, so the higher the resolution the better!
* Deadline: End of September
Random Prizes:
3X entry level registrations will be given out to submitters. =D
All art will be displayed on the new site, so don't hesitate to send in your submissions!

Youtube Advertising
General | Posted 16 years agoNow, I understand the need for advertising. Done right, I'm entirely cool with it. But Youtube has... uh... well, what the fuck. Google owns and runs Youtube, and normally Google does things that I generally agree with. This is not one of them.
Movie previews are a commercial. A form of advertising for an upcoming product. Lately, on almost every movie preview I've seen on Google the video starts out with an advertisement. Google has managed to incorporate advertisements *INTO* advertisements*. There's an Internet meme there that I'm not going into, but I'm sure you know the drill.
Example: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP9wtdwgeok
Worse, you can't embed the video. You can't embed the advertisement to promote the video and get more exposure for it. This makes sense... how?
Google, what the fuck? What the fuck, Google. Really.
* Technically, Google has been doing this a little differently with the miniature pop-up windows in the videos, but that I was okay with.

FA Fix - Firefox 3.5.2 + Skype
General | Posted 16 years agoSo, I've seen a few journals and Trouble Tickets discussing problems refreshing pages on FA. People would clear our journals, notes, etc. and the update counters would not update, the message center would display any item that was previously removed. This has been happening to me, too, so if you've been experiencing this issue trust me when I say I feel your pain. In fact, this was happening not just on FA but to Twitter as well.
After some weird deduction, I've found out that it's not an FA issue at all but a problem with Skype. If you have Firefox 3.5.2 and Skype installed it can cause interference due to the add-on Skype installs into Firefox by default.
Disable the Skype Add-on (click Tools > Add-Ons) and restart the browser, and viola, all your problems magically go away. Re-enable the add-on, restart, and they're back again. Took me far, far longer than it should have to figure out the root cause of this issue, but it was affecting quite a few people.
Whatever the add-on is doing somehow is interfering with Firefox's ability to pull updated page requests (that's my assumption anyway) so the browser defaults to the old cache.
Either way? This fixes it.
So if you're an update whore and have Firefox 3.5.2 and Skype installed, and you're having problems... you now know how to fix it.

Just a general warning: myself, a few admins and several other users have received e-mails like this in the past few days. I've not contacted the spammer back to investigate the issue, but I believe they may be attempting to e-mail address mining from FA*. Most likely for general phishing/scamming purposes.
Searches for the various e-mail address the person uses traces back to a questionable dating site (big shocker). I would treat this as a spam. This seems to happen to people who have posted their e-mail address publicly at one time or another.
If you receive the e-mail do not respond to it. Delete it, or add it to your spam/blocking filters on your e-mail client and be done with it.
In my personal view this has 419 scam written all over it. Don't be stupid. Just delete it and move on. =)
* E-mail mining can happen on any site that you post your information publicly. It's not a security issue, and not a "hack". Fret not.

Return of the Ads
General | Posted 16 years agoAds are back (whoo) after an extended vacation. Ads are currently FA's primary source of income at this point and time, and vital to the site (since they help pay the bills). I know ads are /not/ everybody's most favorite things, but as I stated in the past, ads will ONLY be "by furs, for furs". I will not subject FA to corporate advertising if I can avoid it. I want to keep it a part of the community.
We'll be opening up advertising slots for people in the next few days. First, I have to edit and update the advertising guidelines (aka, rules to prevent obnoxious/annoying ads).
I prefer if the ads are good, solid. More info will be posted soon.

Offline-ish For a Few
General | Posted 16 years agoAbout a week ago we had a massive power outage in my neighborhood. Power went on and off a few dozen times before goin' down hard for about eight hours. Unfortunately, when this happened, it seemed to have shorted something on my computer. My motherboard and RAID controller (Areca Arc 1210) are totally shot. Fun.
My PC sorta looks like this (if I can even get it to boot);
http://bit.ly/GXqNx
I had about 99.5% of my stuff backed up (yay!). Most, but not all. Will be able to rebuild the PC once I get cash together.
If you have commissioned me (or are waiting on a request) please re-email me at dragoneer@furaffinity.net. While I'm waiting to get the funds together to fix my computer I'm focusing on art (and only art). Unfortunately, I didn't have all my commission info backed up (most of it, but not all).
Will have some new pics up this week. :)
Still got my laptop.

RIP Futurama - Again
General | Posted 16 years agoGood news, everyone!
I have bad news.
According to Crunchgear, the single greatest entity in the known universe (The FOX Network) has decided to recast all of the voice actors in Futurama. All of them.
http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/07/17/fox-is-recasting-futurama/
Apparently, the original actors decided they wanted a pay hike to come back to the show after FOX previously treated them all like shit by cutting Futurama because they didn't want it to compete with the Simpsons. So now, after Futurama has proven nice and profitable via DVD sales and some fun movies, they're looking to bring it back on the cheap. With soundalikes. And less pants.
This makes me a sad panda.

It makes me squee.

General | Posted 16 years agoSort of in response to my last post, people always try to define what Furry is or isn't. Defining the fandom is near impossible.
Furry is entirely subjective. All of it. Every last bit of it. Some people try to justify it as love of anthropomorphics or "funny animals" (which is a effing lame term) while others try to rationalize it as spirituality. Problem is: furry has no definition. None. At all. Nada. There are so many labels you can use to apply to the fandom from each sub-culture, but none of them are really "it". They're all close, but no one thing can define what the fandom is or isn't. The entire culture is completely subjective and intricately personal to each person viewing it.
At it's basic core, the only true definition one could use would be that Furry is a place where mythical creatures run completely rampant. A place where representative creativity knows no boundaries, nor limitations. It's a fart of imagination into the winds of change.
Maybe not that last one...
You can't define the undefinable, and it's not worthy trying to do so. Furry is a personal experience. For some? Just art. For other it's about porn and sexual identity. Some bask in the antics and character that comes with fursuiting. Others find spirituality within the boundaries. And for some, hell, it's just something to do on Saturday night.
Just enjoy it for what it is. :) There'll always be labels. Always. And the only way to combat a label is with a huge effin' Sharpie (carry one with you at all times).

A Tail of Identity (Furry Documentary)
General | Posted 16 years agoI am notoriously anti-media and will fight tooth-and-claw the media invasion into the fandom. However, it's sort of a grim reality that... well, Furries are the new "it". We've had the Trekkies, Star Wars nerds and Otakulites in the limelight, and the cameras are slowly pointing our way. My personal feelings aside, I have to admit every time I hear the words "furry" and "media" mentioned I cringe and want to hide in the first hole I can find.

This... is a fairly interesting documentary. I don't agree with everything portrayed here, but it seems to be an honest look into a few furries, their lives and outlooks. Does it represent the fandom as a whole? Nope, nor does it make that claim. It's pretty much a look into the fandom at three people (and only three people). Go in with an open mind and enjoy. It's decent.
And it even has an FA: United t-shirt featured in the video (worn by FAU staffer Foxwell, no less!). He's helpin' head up the fursuiter stuff at FA: United. :)

NOTE: Leave any drama or negativity behind, guys. This is not the place.
