Utahded
Posted 15 years agoUtahded? Yes. Utahded.
So, you may be looking at me (or more appropriately, at your monitor) wondering what the hell am I saying. I'm saying Utah is retarded. And I'm proposing that "Utahded" be the word used to describe it.
But... why?
http://www.newser.com/story/80873/u.....2th-grade.html
Utah has proposed plans to eliminate the 12th grade. They figured that, well, their education system was failing too much as ti is, and educating failing students just costs too darn much. So, why no eliminate it to save money? WHOO HOO!
One of their primary arguments is also that, hey, during the 12th grade... kids just goof off too much to learn anything, so why bother? Yes. That's... that's an actual argument. Wish I was making that up. I'm not. I mean, seriously, right? If kids are goofing off because they're graduating soon and don't feel there's any risk then, uh, yeah... making them graduate earlier isn't really going to help.
Call it a hunch.
So, in summary...
Utahded.

Random Thought
Posted 15 years agoIt's time we stop embracing silent letters. We've dealt with invisible alphabets for far too long. It's time the "nife" in knife realize its true potential. But then people'd go "Hey, remember Knife? Man, that word looks fucked up now. Why'd we do that?"
Silent K's are handicapped placards for lesser words.
Note: This isn't a serious thought or anything, so don't take it as such.

FA Monthly Shirt Designs
Posted 15 years agoAs I mentioned before, we're going to be doing an "FA Shirt of the Month" deal to help raise funding for FA (so we don't have to always beg for money).
http://www.redbubble.com/people/preyfar
You may begin submitting your designs... now!
The Rules:
1) Designs must be high res (3200x2400)
2) The simpler the design the better (fine details tends to get lost) and minimal background (thinking "outside the box" for the win!)
3) Keep your colors safe (no overly hot, no overly dark tone - very bright colors don't print well!)
4) Shirt's should be FA themed (mascots welcome!). Shirts can be pro FA or (dun dun duuun!) FA satire. We can a hit.
That's it. :)
Send your designs to admin@furaffinity.net. Oh, and feel free to upload them to FA. We'll pick one or two a month to add the site, and give you a poke if you're chosen. You'll also get your name posted up on the monthly news if chosen as well!
Be sure to add "monthlyshirt" as a keyword to your submission ideas. :)
More details will be posted on the wiki soon.

Up Yours, Snow!
Posted 15 years agoWhy the hell are all the major blizzards hitting Friday-Sunday?
We got 32" of icy white sky shit here in Reston, VA. Why the hell can't we get a massive snowstorm on, say... a Monday? I want to do stuff on the weekend, go up to Jersey, just... do something. ANYTHING. Anything but be snowed in. Wouldn't mind a few "snow days" off work. Not just sitting around the house because the streets aren't plowed.
This is the third time massive snow planted down on a Friday.
UNACCEPTABLE, MOTHER NATURE! You fun killing frosty bitch.
Love,
Neerkins

Pet Peeve #194
Posted 15 years agoY'know, it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine, but I have it say it: it annoys me when people say "children are the future" as a general blanket statement, and go on about how we must protect them at any cost*. AT ANY COST. And it's always accompanied by a horrible sob story, as if human suffering only ever affects children and never anybody else.
What?
At what age do people stop mattering? 18? 21? I'm 29, but I can damn well change the future if I really gave a shit (hint: I don't). All "future changing" politicians and rule makers? ALL OLD BASTARDS. Oh, and you know what adults can do that kids can't? MAKE MORE KIDS.
</rant>
* Nobody should have to suffer. Please don't read into this and think I'm implying that, but the implications are always sort of "Hey, it's okay if adults suffer, so long as we protect the kids". NOBODY should have to.

It's No Longer Comcastic!
Posted 15 years agoSo...
Uh, yeah. Comcast is renaming its TV and Internet services group from "Comcast" to "XFINITY" (yes, all uppercase). As pointed out on The Consumerist, this sounds like the name of a network that specializes in porn. And I can't disagree with their assumption.
http://blog.comcast.com/2010/02/com.....s-xfinity.html
What the hell was wrong with "Comcast" as a name? XFINITY? It sounds like something a twelve-year-old would come up with. A name that's "kewl".
How much did somebody get paid to come up with a name this bad?

Con Plans for '10
Posted 15 years agoSo, looking over con plans... trying to figure out where to go. Currently, penned in for FWA (epic woot!), FAU (badass!), Anthrocon and possibly Indy Furcon and/or MFF. Or, and Mid-fur. Still haven't decided.
Chicago's a hell of a ways to drive from DC. I used to love flying, but after all the freakin' fee's airlines impose nowadays... blegh. It's not worth it.

Music Rant
Posted 15 years agoSo, Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" was voted Song of the Year 2009™.
Music executives, if you ever wondered why CD sales are down and your revenues are tanking, allow me to point you to your reason. Now, nothing against Beyonce - she's got talent (when she chooses to use it), but how the hell is this the Song of the Year™? It's highly repetitive, from the lyrics down to the over-looped beat which is the same 1.5 seconds of audio with a few minor variations for about three minutes.
This isn't to say the song is bad - I like a lot of repetitive music. Lada Gaga? I'm shamed to admit it, but I like her stuff. But would I ever put her up for Song of the Year™? No. Daft Punk? Fatboy Slim? I love 'em. But it's bad when you go back and point to, say, Weapon of Choice (link) as being a far more complex song musically (more than just lyrics). Again, not to say the song is bad... but being so good as to say it's Song of the Year™? That there were *NO* better songs than this?
Shouldn't the Song of the Year™ embody everything that is the *best* of the music world, both artistically and creatively? Does Song of the Year™ just really stand for Most Profitable Song of the Year™? Or have standards just fallen so low that a voice and a sexy ass is more powerful than the sum of the whole?
Again, I'm not dissing Beyonce. The song's not bad, but it's not what I'd rank up as the single best song of 2009.

Coding + Bandwidth Update
Posted 15 years agoOur 150mbit connection is now live. This completely removes all bandwidth limitations from the site (we're hovering at around 125mbit at peak). In addition, yak has finalized some CSS and javascript rewrites to the site that should allow pages to load up to 300% faster (and on some submissions larger, up to 500%).
Enjoy the new speed, kids. :) Your donation and advertising dollars are hard at work.
Oh, and if you like the faster page loading... go give your thanks to yak. HE'S THE MAN!

The TSA Has a Sense of Humor
Posted 15 years agoI'm somewhat known for making snarky, off-the-wall comments as a way to vent steam or just air quirky thoughts. These comments are generally reserved towards no-name entities, massive corporations or for... the... truly bizarre and/or outright awful (link).
Every so often, one of them responds back.
And this? This is the most epic response I've ever gotten. A response from the TSA, airport security division for the United States government.

Hey, @TsaBlogTeam, can you lump horrible smelling passengers in with terrorists? Horrific BO is its own biological warfare.

@Dragoneer All BO must be placed in sealable quart sized bags in a 3.4 oz or less containesr, or the BO has to go in checked baggage.
I truly hate the TSA. But today? Today I hate them just a little bit less. =)

FA Bandwidth Boost
Posted 15 years agoSo, uh...
From our old colo to our new colo, we jump up by 20% in bandwidth. All was well and good. And then more of you started using FA. And more of you. And more of you. AND MORE OF YOU! And we went FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF no!
And our happy-go-lucky bandwidth started to dive again.
:(
This makes me a sad panda.
So I said **** it, we're getting more bandwidth. And verily, so we shall.
FA's 5th Year Anniversary is this Saturday (we expect Fender fanart!). To celebrate 5 years ofdowntime outages pure awesome, we're adding another 50% on top of our current bandwidth. From 100Mbit... to 150Mbit.
We love you.

The laptop's in perfect condition, but just isn't getting used like I'd intended it to (I don't travel near as much as I used to!) and I'd rather focus on paying off bills right now than anything. =)

FA Shirt of the Month - Coming Soon!
Posted 16 years agoSo, one of the things we're going to do in 2010 for FA is the "Shirt of the Month". With our Red Bubble account, we're going to start offering a unique FA shirt design per month, and let users submit ideas to help benefit and fund the site.
We're trying to break away from the "BAWWW, WE NEED DONATIONS!" routine and come up with a solid plan for funding.
Starting February 2010, we'll start posting our shirt of the month (using some already donated designs).
We figure it's a unique, fun way to get funding for the site *and* let people get something to show for it!
