FAU Lost and Found
Posted 15 years agoJust an FYI for those at FAU - we recovered a few cell phones that were (wisely) locked. As we could not find owner info, we turned them over to the hotel.
You can check in reg/conops, but otherwise all valuables were turned over to the hotel.

It is a time to come together and enjoy one another's company over tea. The Titanium Tea will be held in the con suite at the Mt. Laurel Marriot hotel. Some snacks will be provided, but feel free to bring food to share.
The event will take place on Saturday, May 29th from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.
A variety of teas (and tisanes) will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite to share with others. It would be of great help in reducing cup waste if you bring your own mug.
Here is what I'll have available:
Rooibos
Earl Grey
Jasmine Green
Chai
White Tea
Also, there will be a signature tea made for the Titanium Tea @ FAU 2010. Be there to sample it! Any questions? Feel free to note me here on FA.
See you at the Titanium Tea!
Note: There will be a special panel run by Chef Razor and myself, the Titanium Chef!
How to Eat at a Furry Convention
It will take place on Saturday, May 29th from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm in Terrace B at the Marriot. We'll show you some easy things to make to keep you going while you're busy attending FAU.
Stop by and join us!

Explanation: Draw Muhammad Day
Posted 15 years agoSo, I guess I need to explainthe stance we're taking.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/was.....roversial.html
Somewhere on the Internet, somebody said, "Every time somebody draws Muhammad the artists are harassed, given death threats or worse. Let's counter it by all drawing Muhammad!" They meant it half serious, half jokingly. The idea of it became viral almost overnight.
Once the Internet gets moving it's hard to stop the collective. At this point, reacting to the issue was a necessity as much as anything.
That said...
http://zombietime.com/mohammed_imag.....lamic_mo_full/
Muhammad has been depicted in art and imagery for over a millennium by various artists. He's appeared throughout Muslim history, images of him have been on display in museums throughout Islam, in the media and more. And guess what? Nothing happened. It's only in the recent years that the "depicting Muhammad in art" has taken a turn with riots, violence and mayhem by religious extremists.
Violent extremists do not represent their chosen religion. Their views depict do not depict that of Islam as much as the Westboro Baptist Church do not represent Baptists/Christianity. Those radical, violent views should not dictate a website's policies (let alone anybody else's). The Qur'an does not explicitly forbid images of Muhammad. Yes, we are aware that in general Islam does not like Muhammad depicted in art, however, the rest of the world has no issue with it. Muhammad is a historic figure equally as much as he is religious. We will treat him the same way we do other historic and religious figures* (Jesus was as much a renown philosopher and pioneer of Altruism as he was to some the Messiah).
A counter argument one could use is that the Ten Commandments forbids graven images ("Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.") which can even apply to images of Jesus or Mary. So do we cater to that as well?
It's a weird situation, and there's technically no "right way" to handle it short of making special rules for one, and only one, religion. It's too easy to lead to mass censorship, and that's not a a road we're taking.
*We are aware there are some images on FA that violate site rules, and we will do some image sweeps and remove them later.

Useful Things: Paypal Fee Calculator
Posted 15 years agohttp://www.rolbe.com/paypal.htm
Because Paypal takes a small chunk of fees (like any credit processor), you can use the Paypal fee calculator to ensure you get paid the proper amount you're trying to send them.
=3
EDIT: As some have noted, you can send a payment as a "Personal" as either "Gift" or "Money Owed" and not incur fees. This is not a good idea to use this too often, as doing so can trigger the Paypal Inquisitors to do account audits.
EDIT 2: As others have pointed out, it's against Paypal TOS to ask people cover their fees. Because I guess that makes Paypal look more expensive than it really is, or... whatever. So this is a "use it as you want" scenario.
If you commission somebody, you should (out of kindness!) pay the fees. It'll help them out. =3

BP believes that the new name change will more accurately reflect the current conditions of the ocean, and remove them from all further responsibility and requirements for oceanic cleanup.
Teleportation
Posted 15 years agoA lot of people like the idea of teleportation, love it. Honestly? Kinda scares me, yeah. Why?
Let's say you step onto a teleporter... and emerge on the other side. Hey, it's you! You jumped across time and space. But what if the "you" that steps out on the other side isn't you, but a copy? In the process of teleporting, you are erased on point A and re-constructed the instant you emerged on point B. You teleport, get erased and replaced. It's not you, but a 1:1 copy. Everything you are. Memories, looks, personality. But you? You're dead. You got eradicated and replicated.
You'd never know anybody else who teleported stopped existing, until you jump onto that telepad yourself...

STOPED
Posted 15 years agoSo, recently there's been some discussions as to whether the United States needs to regulate driving test platforms and policies for starting drivers (in some states you can drive age 14 and up). Anyway, there's a lot of mixed views on both sides as to why it's good and why it's bad.
However, it reminded me of a story...
Years ago, I lived in Alabama (ick) and went in to get a drivers license. I was 19 at the time, and while I had an international German drivers license, I didn't have one from the U.S.
Went over to the DMV in Huntsville, waited the requisite 19.1 hours, hopped into the testing room and did my thing. That's when I noticed that on every single instance the DMV's written test, an official Alabama state driving test, "stopped" was spelled wrong. It was spelled with one P.
"Stoped".
So, I finished up,stoped stopped, and took the test up to the window. Poked the clerk, handed over the test... and just casually mentioned the odd typos to the DMV clerk, like "Hey, look at this wacky lil' ol' thing! Haha. Stoped!" He looked at it, said "No, 'Stoped' is the correct spelling" and *FLUNKED ME*.
He fucking flunked me.
Why? Because I didn't know how to spell "stopped", and clearly, that was a problem. And a problem to everyone else, apparently. Because I might not recognize astope stop sign, and not stope my car in time... and THAT would make me a danger to other drivers.
So I had to re-take the written test.
He gave me the second test right away. No waiting at all, which was odd, but whatever. Five minutes later, I was done. Brought it back up, handed it over... and pointed out that on this version of the test, "stopped" was spelled correctly! Yes, that will be two P's, thank you very much! Show me what I've won, Vanna!
DMV clerk leaned over, asked me if I wanted to take the test *yet again*. No, no, I think I'vestoped stopped for now. I've had my fill of tests for the day, thanks. He passed me. We went out side, drove once around the block... once... parked the car, and we were done.
That was it. A spelling error. An idiot. Failed test. Two minute driving test. No challenge, no difficulty, no spellcheck.
I got my license.
So yeah. Me? Totally in favor of having a standardized testing platform.

Fur Affinity is About Art
Posted 15 years agoSo... I submit the "final" AUP to the admin team for review. I say "final" because it may get rejected and we'll go for another round of edits, revisions and tweaks, but I feel it's pretty solid and damn near done. I went through a lot of feedback, and we worked with groups who were affected by changes (read: Second Life modellers) and we worked out ways to protect those who have legitimate art while curbing the general "screenshot" mentality.
This will not be everybody's favorite FA policy update. We know that, and expect a bit of grumbling from various corners of the site. However, long term, I think this needs to be done.
First and foremost, however, when the site was created it was meant to be an *art* site. Not a MySpace. Not a Photobucket. Not a Facebook. We lost track of that a little over the years. Fur Affinity is a site that caters to a large group with a lot of versatility, and with that comes a huge berth of acceptance. That can be difficult to work with the more and more a site grows.
However, FA has a lot of various options to openly connect and share resources with a lot of people. It's a social networking site as much as it is an art site, so we want to protect that as well.
That said, what were my goals with the new AUP?
Reinforce that this, first and foremost, is an art site. Protect the original idea of the site, and reinforce what FA was, is and should be. A site about art... and a little bit more. This isn't to say we won't still allow a lot of things, just that want to shift our focus over a lil'. The AUP can be a scary thing to a lot of people, but we're trying to make it clearer and more concise. Though, as we've discovered in the past, with over 80,000 active users* and 370,000 total accounts... you'll never be able to appease everybody.
Once we get more feedback, we'll post the final thing up and let you review the finalized version. We want to reinforce that this is the best damn furry art site on the planet, and we want to improve what we do and what we do best.
Just look at it when it comes out, take a deep breath... and realize it's not as bad as it seems, even if we are clamping down in certain areas. We're not trying to be dicks (hey, I'll say it!), and we'll work with you. Don't scream, panic and fret. Ask questions. Don't clear your gallery, because chances are, it's not as bad as you think it is. We're not going to burst through the door with a Gatling Banhammer screaming, "New rules! You're banned, and you're banned, and..." because this is Fur Affinity, not the S.S. Asshat.
- Neer
If you got all the way down here, just remember: filters and gallery folders are coming this year.
* 80K active account is huge. Any site that measures their userbase by only the accounts they have, and not "active" accounts, is not giving you honest figures. =)

[RANT] Things I Sometimes Want to Say
Posted 15 years ago"You are too stupid to exist here, and your very usage of this website drastically reduces the IQ of any other site member who manages to survive reading your posts. Everyone who knows you is stupider for simply having met you. This ban is not a ban for ban's sake, but a ban to help ensure the continued progress of humanity."
I never do.
Because that would be bad.
1 out of every 10,000 of you manages to push my buttons and make me headdesk so hard I'm pretty sure I have a permanent indentation of "WASD" on my forehead.
But hey, a 1:10,000 ratio isn't that bad. Not bad at all! =D
I love the rest of you. Except for Freehaven.
EDIT: Don't read too much into this. This isn't towards anybody in particular, just that... percent of a percent who makes you want to facepalm so hard your head explodes like a blood sausage, gushing with a blood geyser powerful enough to puncture the ceiling from sheer force.

Human Art + FA
Posted 15 years agoOkay, so... I've been seeing a few journals regarding Fur Affinity's stance on human art and this site.
The short, official answer: there is no problem with it at this time. We have no plans to update the AUP with any policy to cover that.
We had considered having a requirement at one point that galleries must be at least 50% anthro-based, but to be honest there is no "human art on FA epidemic", and thus no reason to even take such action. There are some accounts here that do cater towards the pinkish side, but we're mostly fine with that.
In the future, that may change. But for now, we don't see a problem with it. I honestly don't ever see a problem with it. Fur Affinity accepts a large variety of art and artists.

Site Alert - FA Phishing Scam
Posted 15 years agoFUR AFFINITY PHISHING/SCAM SITE: http://furaffinity.t35.com/ http://noreds.000space.com/phish/ and http://furaffinity.tk/
(Do not sign into the above link. Seriously.)
We've gotten several reports of accounts being hacked recently. After looking into it, somebody setup the above phishing site to capture accounts and cause damage to FA and its members. We are currently taking the appropriate action.
The only official domain of this site: www.furaffinity.net
Many of the Phishing scams were sent by discombobulated.
Also, props to
theBlackJackal09 for bringing to my attention. They alerted me to the phishing issues, and I was able to track down the sites. I'm looking for more.
If you believe you have signed into the above site IMMEDIATELY CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD(S). If you've used your password at any other site change your passwords there as well.
Phishing can happen to any site, and it's always best to be aware of what's going on around you and what you're clicking on. It's one of the most common scams on the Internet. If you're ever prompted to login to a site always doublecheck the domain at the address bar -- security begins and ends with you.
Quick tip: ALWAYS doublecheck your browser address bar. Proper domains end with a / in the title ( e.g. "www.furaffinity.net/ when you're at that site)". The / is important, as it denotes the end of the domain (otherwise, spoofers can setup furaffinity.net.otherdomain.com/ to make things look legit).
A video tutorial if you need to know what phishing is/isn't.

L4D2 - The Passing Review
Posted 15 years agoIt's fun, and it's got a lot more unique gameplay than the other campaigns. However, it's short, and I hate to say it, it's really not that much better than the original Left 4 Dead's Crash Course. Not bad, but not better.
A lot of emphasis was put on the "Fallen Survivors", other survivors who thought thet were immune... but weren't. They generally drop a medkit, pills and a throwable, but annoying to kill, and have a tendency just to run in the other direction the moment you spot them, vanishing.
That said, the map designs are great, if not overly complex at times and it's pretty fun. It's a lot more open-ended than some of the other L4D2 campaigns. The additions go a long way to making L4D2 fun.
The downside? They really fucked up Louis' voiceovers. IMDB still lists Louis' voice actor as Earl Alexander, the original actor for Louis, but in-game, he sounds nothing like Louis. It's more like a bad impression of him, with an almost gay lisp to his dialogue. I wish I were kidding. =/
Best line of the game:
"I will give you all $1,000 for a piggyback ride... RIGHT NOW."
Over all: 7/10
If you have an Xbox 360, you may end up rating the DLC much lower given you have to pay for it. =/

Valve can't tell a story for shit. I'm sorry. They just can't. Valve is great at solid gameplay and giving atmosphere, but atmosphere doesn't tell a great story, and Valve relies too much on the player making up whatever assumptions they want about what happened, to who, how and why. Leaving it up to the player to fill in the blanks of the back story doesn't leave memorable moments. Sure, some events happen, but for the most it's just sort of small events.
They can also create great personalities. That's what people loved about Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress. The personalities. However, while they give a game a unique feeling, they don't make a story.
Half-Life 2? Great game. It's story? Not so great, really. And Bill's death in "The Passing" is barely explained. "A good man died today." Yep, one line, that's it. And you may not even get the line since all the dialogue is random. He just appears as a corpse on the ground, and there is zero emotional attachment to it. Or anything else involving the Passing.
I have NEVER seen a more emotionless death in any game, movie or TV series ever. Especially after all the hype that was behind it.
So meh.
