Doodles For Daiquiri - Support His Ride
Posted 13 years agoKwolf13 wrote:So, I have an idea to help raise money for Daiquiri's Ride To Conquer Cancer. Artists could offer cheap art. Head-shots, badges, sketches, etc, and donate the proceeds to Daiquiri's cause.
I myself may do this idea sometime this week (I'll post a journal stating when I'm doing it, probably Tuesday when I'm off from work).
But I really want to get this idea going, because it's a great way to promote support for Daiquiri. It's something I'm pulling for, because I myself have lost at least two people close to me to cancer, and two more are currently suffering from it. So it's a cause that is very close to my heart.
If you don't know about Daiquiri and his cause, click here
Please, please spread the idea around and link back here, and hopefully we can get some other artists in on this, too.
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for your help and support.I think this is a pretty nifty idea, and given that the donation list shows proof of donation once people pay... it's solid to the core. <3
Congrats, kwolf13. With luck, we'll be able to rally enough support from the site and the fandom to help Daiquiri meet his $5,000 goal!

Help Daiquiri Fight Cancer!
Posted 13 years agoAttention furries!
Once again, our friend
daiquiri is prepping for a ride to fight cancer! He's raising to help fund cancer awareness and aid science in its noble quest for the cure. Do you have $5? Yes. Yes you do, and that's all it would take to help fund Daiquiri's ride. If everybody pitched in we'd be able to help him meet his goal (and hey, it's tax deductible to boot!).
http://www.conquercancer.ca/site/TR.....amp;fr_id=1413
Cancer is something that has affected us all - even myself, my family and friends. It's a life changer, and we can all do our part. So help a fellow furry, and help fund their ride and quest for a good cause. It's rare that a furry gets a chance to do something that benefits so many people, and Daiquiri's got my full support.
If you've got a few bucks help support the cause. It's worth it. Life's worth it.

Fur Affinity in a Nutshell
Posted 13 years agoFursuits - The Follow Up
Posted 13 years agoFollowing up the earlier journal, here's what I found:
Issue 1: 6 months ago, a former site admin had worked on the issue between the two users, and had promised to follow up with that user. They, unfortunately, did not, and nor did they update that on the user's history with that information. Which leads to...
Issue 2: An admin saw the previous' admins request, and enacted on it. It appeared to the admin that the users in question (Lav & Howie) had not complied with the previous admin's request. Because they did not contact the user, the missing information from the previous admin had not come to light. We should have contacted the users up front, but did not. This could have been avoided had we taken time to follow up and communicate with the users. Had we done so, we'd have been able to come to a proper conclusion that would have worked for everybody involved.
Given that, I strongly believe we need to change the way we approach users. If more than one violation needs to be removed... we should be making more attempts to contact the users before hand to explain the rules and policies, and try to work with them. We've been striving to be more clear with our removals, and try to be more up front to users when we do so.
One that note: Yes, some of the images removed WERE in violation of site rules. Not /all/ of them were, however. And there should never be a point where we remove images not in violation of site policy.
The rules are not as clear as they should be, and I will be re-working the rules over the next few days to make them as crystal clear as possible. This will apply both for users and for admins. For those asking: Harnesses are fine. Fursuits in full bondage... not so fine. We'll also be removing the "Fursuit - Adult" category (and all the "adult" categories for that matter). They no longer apply to the site, and can be condensed. We don't allow adult photography as it is so the category is moot at this point.
I love fursuiters, and they're a valuable part of the site. Many of FA's staffer are suiters, and some even help run the events for suiters at various cons. So we're right there with you. When it comes to fursuiters we're not changing the rules, fret not. There's a reason that we have exceptions to major policies solely FOR suiters and ONLY for suiters. We like 'em.
We messed up, and we should have approached this differently. I apologize I wasn't able to intervene earlier, but I was mid-way through a 15 hour straight drive when this happened. While I can't change what happened... I can do everything within my power to prevent it from happening again.

Fursuits
Posted 13 years agoJust a note - I'm looking into the issue behind the recent removal of some fursuit images that have caused a bit of an uproar. Apparently, some things major issues happened while I was on vacation over the past week and I'm checking into what happened.
I can't state more until I look into the issues. I'm trying to get evidence on both sides (and will be contacting both sides).

Mass Effect 3 - Leaving Earth

Not talking about the ending. Not talking about the game. Just this. This one piece of music. This one piece of music from Mass Effect 3 is able to sum up so much emotion with so little. It's amazing. Beautiful. Stirring.
If you've played ME3, and it made you want to cry... well, I wouldn't blame you. God knows I cried a few times.
Conventions & Mini-fridge Abuse
Posted 13 years agoI'd like to call your attention to this journal:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3285605/
If you're a con-goer like me I'd like you to read the above journal. It's important. Running FA United, and being a regular con attendee, I've seen this behavior before. A lot. Lie, state you have a medical illness... get a mini-fridge for your room. Hotels have a /very/ limited amount of mini-fridges, and they're generally reserved for people with illnesses first and foremost. They're the priority, and they deserve to get them. Others can pay a fair fee to have the little luxury in their room as a bonus.
Now, I won't name names, but I have several (yes, SEVERAL) friends going back years who partake in this behavior, and frankly it disgusts me. I don't approve of it People with sensitive medical issues can die if they can't keep certain medications cool. Granted, everyone should have a Plan B, but that Plan B should NOT be because somebody lied to get a mini-fridge for free. Seriously.
Running a convention, there is NOTHING more stressful than seeing an attendee hurt or having a medical issue. It's nerve wracking watching, waiting... hoping everything turns out alright. I hate to see people put in harm's way, be it at FAU or any other con.
Do yourself and your fellow furs a favor: if you can't pay for the fridge... don't get a fridge. Don't. Bring a cooler, get some ice, do the ol' fashioned way. You can get ice everywhere. At the hotel, gas stations, grocery stores and more. A minor inconvenience for you can be a major lifesaver for someone else.

Second Life
Posted 13 years agoAs I posted on Twitter a little over a week ago, I'm looking for about a dozen or so people to discuss FA's policies with regards to how we handle Second Life submissions. Specially, to re-write said rules to benefit Second Life artists.
I'll be honest: I think I may have been overly aggressive in how we handled 3D art and Second Life, and we want to create better, cleaner rules to both encourage 3D artists AND benefit people who make art relying on screenshots/models in Second Life. We've been reviewing all of FA's policies of late, and this is one of them.
And we need your help.
If you're interested in offering advice, helping shape FA's rules and policies for Second Life, respond to this post and cite what you do and that you'd like to help. We're specifically looking for builders/modellers/designers. As well as people who outright HATE FA's current policy (I know you're out there!). I'll pick about a dozen or so people, and send them notes and invite them to take part in the discussion.

Photoshop Tips - Save for Web
Posted 13 years agoStepping in today with a fun, neat little tip for Photoshop users!
On FA, we often see people uploading pictures with rather large file sizes - sizes often unnecessarily larger than should be for the web. While storage has gotten cheaper, there's really no reason to have a 5MB image that's under 1280x1280px. With one simple change, you can reduce file sizes drastically.
In Photoshop, Save As retains a lot of non-essential data for the images. It can leave files bloated, and sometimes upwards of 2-3X the filesize.
Instead, save your files using Save For Web and Devices under the File menu. Unless you're archiving your high-ress files for printing, Save For Web and Devices removes unnecessary data from your file WITHOUT reducing visual quality. It will make PNGs easier to handle (and faster to download), and will let you dynamically view quality loss for JPG and GIF so you can maximize file savings without sacrificing visuals. The perfect balance of compression.
Your downloaders hard drives will thank you, your gallery will be snappier to load and your web hosts will think you're a do-right fellow! Plus, it's more efficient for people on mobile devices, and doesn't sacrifice quality. And with more people viewing images on mobile devices the space-saving benefits speak for themselves.
I ran two of my own images quickly for an example.
A 1280x1280 24-bit PNG (uncompressed):
Using Save As: 5.2MB
Using Safe for Web: 1.6MB
File size savings: About 59%
A 1280x1280 JPG (lowest possible compression of 12/12 vs 100%):
Using Save As: 1,105k
Using Save for Web: 727k
File size savings: About 34%
There's a lot of file saving potential using Save For Web and Devices. The savings will vary from image to image, but give it a try. The results may surprise you.

The Firefox "Suit"
Posted 13 years agoI'm... I'm just going to go out and say it. The fandom's best suiters and costumers run circles around this, and these guys have cash. A lot of it. This is the best they could do? Really?
Seriously. We need somebody to step up and make an /awesome/ Firefox suit. Or has that been done? Search button... so close, yet so far.

Awesome Roommate Adventures
Posted 13 years agoThere are certain things you never forget. This is one of those things.
In 2007, I lived in Kyrgyzstan. A "nice" little country on the border of China and Uzbekistan. We rented a small house there, and it wasn't too bad. One morning, sound asleep, I woke up to find two Russians kicking my door open and charging in. With guns.
At no point do you ever wake up thinking, "Am I going to shit my pants today?". Much the same way people don't tend to question if a 767 will suddenly fall from the sky and crush them like a bug. But sure enough, there hey were. Two angry Russians. And wouldn't you know it, but they didn't speak English.
Yet they did know one word: "rent". Turns out they were there for the rent money. The money I had given to my roommate a week prior... and who had forgotten to pay them.
Great.
Well, I could help with that! Given said roommate was downstairs sleeping I knew exactly where to find the money, and fix my new found Russian problem. We go down there, wake up my roommate and explain the situation. My roommate stumbles out of his room, rubs his eyes, and looks at the Russians. It's at that moment he says, "I don't have money." NOOOOO! "If you want your money you'll need to drive me to the ATM." DOUBLE NOOOOO!
I firmly believe there are certain phrases one should never say to a man with a gun. ESPECIALLY an angry Russian man with a gun.ESPECIALLY two of them. The above is certainly one of things. It falls in line right after "I drank the last of the vodka" and before "the water pipes exploded like blood sausage".
The Russians stared at him, and asked again. Once more, my roommate, this time pantomiming a "driving" gesture, said "If you want your money... drive me to the ATM."
That's about the time I figured I was going to get shot. My roommate had MY share, which I quickly handed to the nice gentlemen with guns. It's also at that point I quietly creeped away (which is always surprising for a fat guy). I watched out of the window as the Russians and my roommate got into a car and drove off. Hopefully, he'd also return (spoiler: he did!).
It was on that day I realized that my roommate was both stupid to do that... and ballsier than anyone I had ever met in my life. You want your money? My terms. Not in 1,000 years could I pull that off.
He came back later. I never said anything to him at the time because I was both freaked out and impressed.
To this day, it's one of the ballsier things I've witnessed in my life.

FA Uptime
Posted 13 years ago
http://share.pingdom.com/banners/6b9cb6d5
Despite rumors, FA's actually maintained a very high uptime over the past two years. We dislike downtime as much as anybody else, but it can often be an evil necessity to help improve site performance (as we saw recently), perform maintenance and make upgrades. Given the hubbub from the recent outage while we upgraded our SQL server, I figured I'd share the above. If not just because it's interesting (given the site's past).
Despite multiple DDOS attacks, outages for upgrades, planned maintenance or more... we've been holding up rather well. We'd still like to be better, and are working towards that. FA used to be known for outages (almost daily) early on, but we've dramatically improved. And we like/hope to think that shows.
We know a lot of work still needs to be done on the site, as we've got a long way to go. Still... we like progress all the same.
Note: Outages are recorded as any period where the site is not responsive for more than 5 minutes (this could be due to a variety of reasons). It also doesn't track the "FA is Offline" message when we have the site in lock down mode. Still, the numbers are fairly representative, and we're looking to improve them further.
Note 2: I started recording FA's uptime via Pingdom shortly after we moved datacenters. At Ironpath (our old host), we were constantly having outages, breakdowns and other major issues which were causing no end of headaches. Uptime was in the low 90%'s at that time. Not very good numbers, we admit.

[Rumor Control] Banning Art Styles/Genres
Posted 13 years agoThanks to a faux screenshot floating around, there are quite a few rumors that FA will be banning Sonic, feral, Pokemon and Digimon* art. This rumor is FALSE, and there is no truth to it. At all. Whatsoever. The faux screenshot was created as an attack against an admin, nothing more. None of the comments made EVER appeared on the site.
We have NO PLANS to remove any content/art style from FA. End of story. I can not stress this enough. Again, we are not, in any way, shape or form, discussing removal or prohibiting any further content or styles.
When it comes to drawn art on FA, there a handful of basic rules in the AUP which applies to it: it must be drawn by you/for you, don't steal, don't harass, don't draw cub porn, tag your art correctly and adhere to the Standards of Quality. It's not a lot, and we have no plans to add in anything else at this time.
If you hear anybody spreading this rumor please feel free to link them to this journal. Further, if you have concerns/questions about something you may have heard... please do not hesitate to ask me. I'll let you know.
The end.
* This should have been a dead giveaway. Seriously.

Seriously.

Regarding PDFs
Posted 13 years agoUPDATE: After a lot of testing, we've ruled out all PDF viewers (and the HTML 5 options).
There's a lot of hubbub about FA setting stories to PDF-only based on a tweet I wrote. A lot of writers are, unfortunately, feeling a bit slighted by this, so I figured I'd try to clear things up.
My entire train of thought wasn't quite communicated well (damn Twitter's 140 character limit). As I wrote in the very next tweet, we're looking in a lot of options. PDF is one we'd like (mainly to offer it as a download option). FA handles stories and written work poorly, and out of any furry site out there, we probably handle it the worst out of any of them. I want to change that.
We're looking into ways to make viewing stories/writing on FA suck less, and are reviewing multiple methods to do so. As it stands now, offering .doc and .docx are a severely limiting method of viewing stories. Nobody should be required to download a story from FA or read or view it. WYSIWYG editors, PDF viewing and other methods. With HTML 5, you can view PDFs in any browser without needing a plug-in, so it was one of the options we're exploring. It's one option we're looking into, not /the/ option.
A WYSIWYG editor, ala LiveJournal or our forums, is my preference. I'd love for users to be able to download a PDF or ePub format based on that, and download the stories to their Kindle, Nook or iPad. View in one, download to the other. PDF is an ISO standard, viewable by any smartphone, tablet and PC. And again, with HTML 5, doesn't require a third party viewer to view them anymore.
We have NOT decided on an option, and I apologize for any confusion.
Again, I'd love WYSIWYG for viewing text, with an option for PDF or ePub for download. I feel that'd offer the best flexibility for everyone.

Makes you really ponder what happens to your food when you toss into the microwave. Kinda disturbing.
