An Update On Things
Posted 11 years agoThis year has been terrible for me. With moving, re-organizing, losing almost all of FAU's gear and personal stuff, various family crisis, taxes (EWWWWW) and the 9,001 things that have gone wrong I suffered exceptional levels of burn out. I apologize for that.
That said, I'm back to working on things full time -- art, site updates and more. I will be trying to make bi-weekly postings with updates and will work to better keep people up to date on things.
On the task right now:
* Cleaning up old commissions and ending my personal backlog
* Revising and fixing FA's UI (still on track for mid-Sept).
* Finalizing FA's re-org, documentation and admin on-boarding for new staff to run the assault on Mt. Ticket Queue.
My motivation and mojo are finally back in full swing thanks to FAU (seriously, you guys made the weekend on that is truly memorable).

GoFundMe - Help Me Get a New Cintiq!
Posted 11 years agoI've never really asked for anything personal like this, but... I really, REALLY need to upgrade my art gear for both personal and FA work. I'm trying to raise money to upgrade my art studio so I can spend more time creating on stuff and less time dealing with a dying Cintiq (backlight is going out).

FA United 7 Post Mortem
Posted 11 years agoFA United 7 has come and gone, and (according to the survey) was a major success. 97% of all respondents to our survey reported high marks across the board!
So, here's a list of what went right... and what went wrong.
If you have FAU specific questions please feel free to ask. I will update the Post Mortem based on questions/feedback we receive.
Registration
Registration ended up running late due to a few hitches. We transitioned to a new registration platform this year after having reliability problems with prior ones. Eventbrite worked fantastically for pre-reg, but we found a few small hitches at the con. We worked with some great staffers at Bronycon (THANKS!) to get the system up and running (minor issues with Boomset, our event processing tool).
Once we figured out the delays and were able to get people in and out of the door. Registrations moved through at more than three times the rate, and we were able to get people through the lines in no time.
Bonus!
We definitely needed more registration kiosks, and we will be investing in some cheap all-in-one PCs for next year to help make that go smoother.
Con Badges
I tried something new with con badges this year to mixed results. We wanted to use a slightly greener badge, and went with a 120pt card stock for the badge. It held up well in all of our durability testing, but we noticed a few flaws at the con. Mainly, fursuiters tend to sweat a lot, and the badges did not hold up well to sweat. They also did not hold up too well to being pulled.
For the most part the new badges did alright, but they could have been better. Next year we will be using a thicker paper and a durable laminate to help ensure the badges have a much stronger life.
The Art Show
The Art Show went well! We had some minor problems given it was our first time running one, but
curiodraco really managed to pull it off and bring things together.
We'll be working closely with her (I'M MAKING YOU A DIRECTOR!) to make it run smoother and far, far better next year. We're closely listening to feedback.
Panels
For the most part, panels and main events went great, though we did hear some feedback panels had overlap, or major panels didn't have enough buffer in between panels. We're listening to feedback and will be working to accommodate better scheduling and more panels.
We will also be offering panelist incentives to help encourage more people to run panels as well. More on that later once we have figured out exactly what the incentives will be.
Also, I apologize for having to bail on my FA panel. With the fire alarms going off Saturday night and having to deal with everything else, I was wiped out come Sunday. I will be working on making the panel's contents available soon, and will be posting them to FA as a news post.
The Cookout
The cookout went fantastically, though we did under estimate the amount of food needed. We were prepped for about 300 people, but definitely needed more. We'll be tweaking how we do the cookout next year (or modifying how we do it entirely.).
Charity Auction
The Charity Auction is going to be moved, most likely to mid-Saturday. We have to look at timing to ensure it doesn't conflict with our main events, but it needs more time on its own.
Dealer's Den
Except for a minor issue getting badges out to dealers early (which will be rectified by having a separate DD check in next year) the Dealer's Den went off without a hitch. The complimentary coffee and drinks was a big hit, and we'll be keeping up that new tradition.
There were concerns about noise leakage from the main ballroom, and we'll be investigating on how to best handle that. We're working with the hotel and planning some changes/possible relocation of the Dealer's Den based on what the official Walking Dead and Supernatural conventions have (they';re at the same hotel) and see how they set things up.
Artist's Alley
AA sign-ups sucked, and we dropped the ball there. I'll fully admit it. We'll be moving to a "digital sign up" next year that will allow artists to sign up for every day of the Artist Alley BEFORE the con starts. We'll send out email and text confirmations BEFORE and DURING the con.
This should make AA much easier for people looking to sign up. However, to keep it open for people who sign up AT the con we'll ensure a set number of seats are set aside for them. Should keep things fair.
Closing Ceremonies
We somehow managed now to have half a dozen Peter Jackson ending this year. SUCCESS!
We also signed and auctioned off Fender's tie for $420!
So, here's a list of what went right... and what went wrong.

Posted 11 years agoSummer Update #1.1 - YCH, Adoptables and Auctions
Posted 11 years agoNot posting this one as a site wide announcement (the TOS and AUP updates for users is far more important). We've been working on an overhaul of categories for a while (I took a poll some time ago, huuuuge amounts of feedback - we're discussing the best way to implement them).
In the mean time, we've added three new categories:
YCH
Adoptables
Auctions
Posting YCH or adoptables with these categories will let users be able to specifically browse for YCH, adoptables or art auctions and help greatly increase your exposure. Rather than your YCH falling into obscurity or relying on spamming reminders, people looking for YCH will now have a simple way to find the art you're selling.
Feel free to pass it on. The changes are already live.
Happy arting.

How to Train Your Dragon 2
Posted 11 years agoSaw it last night. In short: amazing!
While the movie is a little slow at times, my god, it takes everything I loved about the original movie and amplifies it up. <3 It's so damn good it's ridiculous.
I won't say it's better/worse than the original because it takes the story in a completely different direction, so it's really hard to compare.
Definitely worth seeing though!

Convention Survival Guides
Posted 11 years agoHowdy, howdy!
I recently wrote some "survival guides" for first time convention attendees which can be used for pretty much any and all conventions. They contain great tips and suggestions for first timers new to the convention scene.
If you have feedback, suggestions or additions that should go in feel free to reply with your tips! Want to add them to your site, modify or repost them? Feel free! Just give credit to me and FA United for the source. =3

Getting Caught Up
Posted 11 years agoTo say I'm behind on things would be an understatement of galactic proportions. I wanted to let you all know I'll be burning through things over the next week or two until I'm caught up on notes, tickets and more.
There's been a lot of really interesting developments behind the scenes that have caused a bit of an unnecessary, but good distraction. We're moving forward on a lot of spiffy stuff.
If you're waiting on a response from me just sit tight. I'm trying to get to everyone as swiftly as I can.

Furries in the Media
Posted 11 years agoMy thoughts on furries in the media? In the short of it: I don't care. I fully admit, that once upon a time, it used to. It used to really get under my skin and bother me, but somewhere along the the line I just stopped caring.
Why?
It didn't matter. Not one event from any of those shows has ever affected me, never caused so much as a blip in my personal life except for conversation that went "Oh god, did you see it?" "Yep." and then... nothing happened. Nothing at all.
Yes, when I watch those clips I do feel uneasy at times. But... so what. So. What. Does it hit close to home? Is it guilt by association? Who knows. What I do know is that at the end of the day is there are ZERO ramifications. Not against me, not against FA, not against anyone but the people who were on those shows.
Don't like it? Change the channel. Shrug it off. Go to another website. Laugh it off. In the end of the day, people will be represented equally by greats like Neil Degrasse Tyson as much as they will the Honey Boo Boos of this world, and in between them, the wildest, most varied group of personalities and individuals you will ever meet in your life. Almost seven billion of them.
Harassing or taking action against people who choose to go on those shows is stupid (trust me, I've made those mistakes in the past). Rather than harass people, rather than speak up, why not do something to make the community a better place? Stop crying murrsuits, start a campaign to raise money for charity.
Make a landmark. Be the change you want. Do something great, and do it as a furry. Any one of us can be the ambassador of this fandom we truly want to be if you stand up make a difference. And yes, one person is all it takes to make a difference.
Furries have raised over a million dollars for charities. Fursuiters have visited sick children in hospitals to help cheer them up. We volunteer as first responders, community workers and more.
There's an amazing wealth of fantastic community service if you look for it. Don't focus on the negative when there's a limitless supply of positive just waiting underneath the covers.
Be the change you want to be. Do something great.

A Mostly Happy Ending
Posted 11 years agoFor those following my recent journals, once again... thanks. Your support's been invaluable throughout the recent insanity.
The good news is that my apartment decided to settle with us, and met our demands almost across the board. No lawyers, no fights, no nasty litigation or fighting. Which is good. I can finally put this behind me.
We lost a lot of good stuff, but... we should be able to recover and move on. =D And I can return back to focusing on making improvements and getting the site (and my art) in gear.

A Word of Thanks
Posted 11 years agoI just wanted to toss out a word of thanks to everyone who has been supportive. The last 24 hours has been mind numbing, incredibly stressful and it's just... nightmarish. I don't even know how I'm handling this as well as I am. We lost so much. At a minimum, we've lost $13K worth of stuff (and counting).
We've filed with our insurance company, but that will be another fun bag of crap to see how bad things get pro-rated at their "value". I've lost so much art, a sketchbooks and other custom, unique things I'll never get back. It's frustrating.
But to everyone who's given a word of thanks, support... you've been amazing. You've been able to make it easier to handle.
We have our meeting with the leasing office in 30 minutes to try to figure this stuff out. I'm really hoping they go "Here's a check. Please don't sue!" because they know how much they fucked up.

Devastated
Posted 11 years agoTonight I got a call from Sciggles. Emergency. Our storage unit? People were throwing everything it away. Apparently, when we signed up for our storage unit the leasing office failed to put it under our name. The listing was still under a previous tenant's name -- a tenant who was evicted.
So they cleaned it out. Threw everything away. Printers, laptops, art, sketchbooks, collectables, convention stuff... about 3/4ths of our shit in storage is gone. Irreplaceable stuff. Gone. By the time we found what was going on most of our stuff was in a trash compacter.
Definitely NOT a good day. If Sciggles hadn't have been walking Odin and happened to come across them unloading it... everything would be gone. Across the board.
What a nightmare.
Already called out of work tomorrow because I have to go fight this, and figure out what the hell we're going to do. It's unpleasant. I know when it comes down to it's just material things, but we lost an incredible amount of stuff that just can not be replaced.
FML.

Posted 12 years agoUh, that was extremely unpleasant. I know things have been rough for the past week, but we're working to improve things and make them better across the board. I can't apologize enough. This last week has been waking hell for me, but we're carrying forward and prepping to improve and move on, move forward.
I think I raised Aleve's stock by 3.1% this past week.

The Official FA 2013 Tree Ornament!
Posted 12 years agoNew for 2013: the official FA Christmas, Holiday Tree, Yule Log Decoration and Festivus pole decoration!
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12239491/
Want to get your hands on one? Here's what you need to know!
- The 2013 FA ornaments are limited edition. There will only be 500 made (or until we run out of trees!). Each ornament is individually numbered.
- We promise the ornaments will not cause your tree to crash! It may go offline, but some Christmas trees just do that on their own.
- Ornaments are laser engraved on natural cut cedar wood, and no two are alike. The individual grain of the wood varies with each and every ornament. As an added bonus: they smell absolutely amazing!
- Ornaments are $25 each (shipping not included). We offer discounted shipping rates for orders with multiple ornaments (inquire within!).
- Any orders made by December 14th will be shipped that day, ensuring your ornament will arrive by Christmas!
- You're free to order more than one, but we encourage you NOT to decorate your entire tree with 'em! That'd be weird.
- $10 from each sale goes to Fur Affinity (will cover costs of SSL cert renewal and to fund a mobile-friendly site design). The rest covers time, labor and material to make them.
We're taking orders NOW. Interested? Fill out an order form today:

On Categories and Themes
Posted 12 years agoGreetings, citizens!
As many/most/none/all of you know, we're currently working on a beta test for revised uploading to the site. So far, the test is going great and not one tester has reported any problems. Hurrah!
But there's also an issue of Categories and Themes, the lil' nooks and crannies you select when uploading your work to describe them better. Between you and me, uh, this has been a neglected area (among many) and should be changed. Some of them don't make sense. Honestly, who uploads to "Currentevents" or "Prose"? in a serious manner? The amount who do is staggeringly close to zero, and even then, most submissions would still be better off in another group.
One of the things I want to do is boil down these categories to their base artistic element, simplify and make the list more concise, clearer. That's where you come in! I need help identifying areas to find Categories or Themes I may have missed. I'm opening up discussion for the community to toss out suggestions to help expand and refine the list, make it both simpler and robust at the same time.
If you've ever wondered "why isn't this category here..." now's your chance to help make things better. Or if a category you feel REALLY needs to go, let me know (and give me reasons why).
Example of my current thought process:
REVISED CATEGORIES
* "Digitalart" becomes "Digital Art"
* "Traditional" becomes "Traditional Art"
* "Flash" becomes "Animation" (it's more encompassing)
NEW CATEGORIES
* 3D Modelling
* Crafting
* Sculpting
* Costuming (includes Cosplay and Fursuiting)
* YCH / Art Auctions
* Streaming Notices
All (Tame) and (Mature) themes are merged together, and users can separate what they search using filters. Reduces redundancy and makes it simpler.
REVISED THEMES
* "Paw" becomes "Foot & Paw"
NEW THEMES
* MLP / Brony
* Goo & Jelly
* Tentacle
* Second Life
You should have an idea of where I'm going with this. You may start your suggestions... now!
NOTE: Please keep this to Categories and Themes ONLY. I know Species need work, but that's for another journal. Trying to keep on target and focus to artistic themes!

99 Things I Hate About Moving
Posted 12 years ago#01 - Boxes. Boxes frakkin' everywhere. If I were a cat I'd be in heaven, but NO!
#02 - The "WHERE THE **** IS EVERYTHING?!" pheonominon. I know I put it in a box, but it's gone. Where it's gone to I have no idea. For all I know it phase-shifted into another reality.
#03 - Discovering long lost shit. I've been looking for this for 9 years, and I finally found it! SWEET! I can't wait to play with this once the move's done! Immediately see #02.
#04 - Moving.
#05 - What the hell is my address again?
#06 - That package you've been waiting 3 months for? IT JUST SHIPPED! Unfortunately, it just shipped the day of your move. To your old address. Good luck!
#07 - Comcast.
#08 - But I don't want to clean the toilet. I made it dirty for a reason. It's not a mess, it's a frakkin' mission statement, property owner: ME.
#09 - Where the hell did I just put...
#10 - Update. All. The. Things. Handing out change of address forms like Oprah.
#11 - Moving.
#12 - Going through everything I own, thinking "Do I really need this?" and knowing in the back of your mind how much you paid for it, but you'd rather throw it out than have to carry it up a flight of stares.
#13 - The undying need to recreate the infamous "tape scene" from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure using industrial packing tape. On the pro-side, you won't need to shave after it rips all the hair out of your face.
#14 - MOVING
#15 - Trying to find creative ways to hide the mustard stain on the carpet so you don't get charged for it.
#16 - Remembering the time you squirt mustard all over the carpet because you were trying to make Sciggles laugh while tongueing a hotdog.
#17 - Remembering that you tongued a hotdog.
#18 - Finding a sock behind the washing machine and thinking "Nope, too much effort." You'll just have to adopt the next family that moves in, sock. We'll miss you.
#19 - WHY ARE THERE SO MANY MOVING FORMS?!
#20 - Having to return Comcast gear. I'd rather set it on fire and dance around the funeral pyre, cursing Comcast's name as I get drunk of cheap cherry vodka while wearing nothing but my underpants.
#21 - Going "I don't want to throw that shirt out! I'll wear it one day when I lose weight!" and knowing... LOL, who the fuck am I kidding, NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
#22 - Discovering a spider that's been lurking under your desk for who knows how long. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING ME, SPIDER?!
#23 - The shame in having to ask your roommate to squash the voyeristic spider because you're afraid of them.
#24 - Moving near a Panera. WHELP! That shirt will NEVER fit now.
#25 - Discovering how much of your stuff got broken in the move, and trying to shrug it off. "Well, I didn't like it anyway. I was thinking of getting rid of it, too." But deep down? Man tears.
#26 - Unpacking.
#27 - A week and a half later, finally getting your internet set up. "Downloading 1 of 2,000 emails." SWEET BABY ZOIDBERG, AN AVALANCHE!
#28 - Moving.
#29 - Paying movers to move your shit because you're too lazy to do it. "It costs how much?" OH! There's those tears again.
#30 - Packing up everything. EVERYTHING! And then you have to poop. "Where's the toilet paper?" Oh. We packed up everything. Literally. FFFFFFUUUUUuuuu....
#31 - Stress, and convincing yourself that "Maybe the shitty flooded apartment I have with abusive managmeent isn't too bad!" because you HATE moving that much.
#32 - 99 - MOVING
(All of the above are true, and I will keep adding to the list as I think of other shit that happened during the past 10 days).

Life/Commission Status
Posted 12 years agoHowdy, howdy!
Just a note: I'm going to be moving to a new apartment over the next few days. We really didn't have much notice on it as everything sort of fell together overnight. Given that, I'll be out for about a week potentially while we get moved in and transferred over to the new place. Shortly after FAU, our apartment flooded and it caused a bit of issue. Our landlord has done the bare minimum to resolve the issue, and we've gotten fed up and are vacating apartment and moving elsewhere. We forced them to break the lease. To say it's caused a massive amount of stress and delay across the board would be an understatement.
If this is unacceptable/causes issues for people waiting on art just note me and I'll get a refund out your way. Elsewise, once I get moved in I'll be focusing on finishing up what I have. I've got about 8 images inked and waiting on color.
