Tax Day Commissions are closed!
Posted 5 years agoIt's getting to be that time of the year once again, and once again, I don't have the money I'm going to owe the government tax man. I thought I had until April, but I've ended up needing to file early as a result of another real world situation, and that needs to be done within a week of today.
So anyway, even though I still have two going at the moment that I need to finish up, I'm opening up commissions again for a limited run.
And as is getting to be traditional, I'm doing it by the slot:
These will be color, $25 per character, and one character per slot. You can buy as many slots as you want.
If you want a specific character, have reference ready.
Payment will be taken via PayPal, Contact me via note here on FA if you're interested.

Character Design: A Video
Posted 5 years agoHere's a nice little video I stumbled over recently that goes into some basic analysis of character design, how it works, and things you can do to try and fix it, when it just isn't working:
Capsule reviews of stuff I've watched recently.
Posted 5 years agoA few quick reviews:
The Owl House: Cute, funny and genre savvy. Just unbelievably good. This is what Disenchanted could have been, and wasn't.
Star Trek - Picard: I'm quite enjoying this. It's nice to dip a toe back into the Next Generation universe. It feels more like a feature film being delivered in chunks than a tv series, though. Cue the theme tune and engage.
Avenue 5: Not really sure what to make of this one yet. Some of it's funny. Some of it's bland. Some of it's clever. Some of it's not. A real mixed bag. Still watching, though.
Harley Quinn: Not much to review here. Grimdark sucks. I barely made it two minutes into the first episode before I gave up. Supposed to be adult. Plays like it was written to appeal to degenerate ten year olds. That this has high scores on Rotten Tomatoes tells you everything you need to know about the value of their reviews.
Nancy Drew: I used to watch the old 70's Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew series when I was a kid. I was expecting a mystery series, but this one surprised me by adding supernatural horror elements. Some truly startling moments. Quite enjoyable, and well done. SPOOKY.
Project Blue Book: Again, I used to love Project UFO as a kid, so a modern take on the same idea seemed right up my alley. It's turned out to be a really well done science fiction program instead. Sort of a midpoint between Project UFO and X-Files.
Batwoman: After the recent CRISIS special, I decided to give it another look-see to see if the changes wrought by the arrow universe's reboot had brought any improvement to this show. They didn't. It's still all about her annoying retread sister. I'm back to not bothering with it. Grimdark still sucks.
Al other Arrowverse shows: Still good.

More 3D print models - open to suggestions
Posted 6 years agoSo, after posting my recent Cobalt STL file for 3D printing:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/34590693/
...I've been asked if I plan to do any others.
And yeah, I think I would like to. I am still very much in the learning process though, so I'd like to see what results people are getting from the current model before I do any others. I do have some loose ideas in place though:
* A version 2.0 of the Cobalt statue, to correct a few problems in the model I can still see, especially the base.
* Possibly Cinnamon , Moonmist or Snowberry, as I already have those guys built.
* Maybe have one of them lounging in a beanbag chair, since I have that as a prop already, too.
* Backing wall set pieces and or/props?
Anyway, I'm open to suggestion. If I did do more, what would you folks want to see?
A couple people have asked for Foozles. I don't really have a working Foozle model to play with yet. I'd need to put some time into that first.
Also, what sort of rating level would folks be most interested in? Cutesy cheesecake poses that could be displayed publicly, or something more explicitly porny?
I guess this would also be an opportune moment to remind folks that as I have no idea how to go about selling any of this, it would probably all end up released here on FA as freebies, so throwing donations at me would go a long way towards encouraging me to put more time into it. Either via my patreon or via Ko-Fi or just the use of FA's shinies. Money = time = results.
That's all I have for now. Looking forward to seeing images of any prints that may come from the current model.

artist gloves?
Posted 6 years agoQuick poll for you art types out there:
How many of you wear artist gloves while working digitally?
I've just seen someone (in a youtube video) wearing one of these. It seems like an interesting idea.
For those of you who have no idea of what I'm talking about:
https://www.amazon.com/Mixoo-Artist.....dp/B07Z5Q5M9M/
So... how many of you use them? Do they actually add a noticeable benefit?
Feed me info, if you have any.

Never trust a little old lady with a gift card
Posted 6 years agoSubmitted for your approval:
In 2019, an international telephone scammer attempted to steal thousands of dollars from a kind, sweet, little old lady.
What the scammer didn't know is that the kind, sweet, little old lady was actually a youtube prankster with a voice changer, a supply of sound effects, and a scripted adventure that would take him on a rollercoaster odyssey which led deeper and deeper into the depths of his own dissolving sanity.
It's going to be a long, bumpy ride.

seeking tech help for a friend
Posted 6 years agoBit of a signal boost, this:

Got a friend who's having some computer problems. If any of you folks are tech savvy, could you give him a bit of a hand? I've made a rough guess as to what the problem could be, but having someone more knowledgeable weigh in would be nice.
Cheers.

Posted 6 years agoThe Last Star Wars (no spoilers)
Posted 6 years agoHey all.. I've seen the new, final Star Wars tonight.
I've been going over my thoughts about it., trying to form an opinion of it.
This has been a bit difficult because it's a hard thing to really get a mental grip on. It's not blatantly bad the way Last Jedi was. But it's also not really what you'd call amazing.
For a start, it's too damn long. An hour and twenty minutes is a good runtime for a film. 2+ hours isn't. I can kind of get that part of the reason for that long runtime is because they had to do a LOT of repair work, after all the damage leftover from Last Jedi. That had to work overtime to paper over that film's fuckups. Which leads to the second problem.
The best Star Wars films have a fairly simple plot. A needs to be done. To do A we need to do B and C. So divide the cast. half does B, half does C. They meet up at the end to achieve A. And there is some of that in this film. But it's spread way out across the runtime with D, E, F, and G crammed in there. There's too much story going in too many directions. And with all of that in there, even with the long runtime, not enough time is spent on any one thing, so that it all ends up feeling rushed.
This just reinforces my opinion that things would have been better if Last Jedi had never been made, or at least shitcanned before release. If they had dumped that turkey, they could have cut this film into two films, expanded the plot so it didn't feel like the audience was being hastily rushed past everything, and really let us sink into the world and the events unfolding. Instead it feels like a disjointed mess of scenes crammed together that just goes on and on and on, racing along in a noisy blur.
There are some other things about the film that annoy the hell out of me, but as they're specifically plot-related, and would probably be considered spoilers, I won't go into them here.
I should say a few things about the fanservice though. Because this film is jammed full of it. These range from callbacks to the previous films, to blatant, almost parody-worthy scenes. I won't mention which one it was, but one of them actually made me say "Oh, for fuck's sake!" out loud.
So.. it's not a good movie. It's also not a bad movie. It goes on a bit too long. It doesn't do much in the meantime. It's just sort of there.
It's not an epic ending. It's just an ending.
To tell you the truth, I'm kind of glad it's over.

F*CK YOU APPLE
Posted 6 years agoI don't know why I let them do it to me.
There's the little red bubble alerting that a brand new iOS version is out and ready for installing, and like a chump I click the button and let them do it to me, again.
Every subsequent version of the ipad operating system is, infallibly, worse than the version before it.
So I've got iOS 13, now. And that statement should be read like "I have cancer, now" Because while 13 comes with one nice feature (dark mode) everything else about it is broken, to the point that it is actively preventing me from using my device, now.
Of the two largest annoyances, let's start with the smaller one first:
It used to be then when you held down a link in the safari web browser, because you wanted to open it in a new tab, you'd get this little pop-up menu. It would be directly under your finger, with "open in new tab" directly under your fingertip, and already highlighted.
Some genius at apple decided that instead, ios needed windows. Because there's nothing quite as usable as a tiny little screen on a tiny little screen subdivided into tinier littler screens. To facilitate this, they removed that easy, simple click and hold menu with a new "Preview" pane that shows the page you are about to go to. This takes extra time to load up, so now what used to be fast is slow and klunky.
But wait, it gets worse. Because that preview image shows up DIRECTLY UNDER YOUR FINGER, while the menu is dumped off to one side. And it now shares space with an "open in new window" selection, directly under "open in a new tab" so that half the time when you're trying to select the one you want, you end up selecting the other one by mistake, and end up with a fractured view, of the page you were just on in one window, and a new window with the new page. And there's no obvious method to close this unwanted new window. No close box. That's all handled by some obscure hand gesture that they never actually tell you.
I got your hand gesture right here, apple.
So, hate the preview. Hate the layout. It's fucking stupid, poorly designed and different for the sake of different while making things worse. But.... there is a way to get rid of the preview pane. There's a close button on it!
However, when you click that, you discover that all it does is remove the image of the new page. The box it was in is still there, showing the url. It doesn't actually close it and go back to the old layout, where things JUST WORK.™
So, with the pointless new preview feature shut off, it's now faster, but it's still a piss-poor piece of design work, and a usability nightmare.
And that's the less annoying of the two.
Here's the worse one: editing text on iOS is now impossible. They threw away their old system of editing text in the name of "different just to be different" and in the process, they removed the one thing that actually made text editing work: the magnifying glass.
Ok, so... you're typing away and realize you've made a typo. So now you want to fix it.
The old way of doing this was to press the screen, hold, and a second later a little magnifying glass would pop up with an enlarged view showing your cursor position. In this way you could easily move the cursor exactly where you wanted it, drop it and start typing again. Backspace out your error, fix it, and all was good.
So, yeah... They got rid of the magnifying glass. It was useful, but it was old. And Apple doesn't deal in old. They only deal in new and different. And different for the sake of different. Because constantly making changes is the only way to signal to other empty trendoids that you are hip and now, and up to date with the newness.
Are you still using last week's iPhone? How sad. Everyone who's anyone has today's!
Their solution to removing a vital tool such as this, is to make the cursor slightly bigger than before, when you hold it down.
So that it peeks out around your fingertip.
So that you know it's there.
Because otherwise you couldn't see it.
Because your finger is in the way.
YOUR FINGER IS IN THE WAY.
You can no longer see the exact position of the cursor when you hold it down to move it, so good luck ever placing it where you want it. The magnifying glass view was always off to one side, out of the way, because whoever designed that took into account the fact that YOU HAVE A FINGER ON THE SCREEN BLOCKING THE VIEW OF THE CURSOR, SO YOU NEED ANOTHER WAY TO SEE EXACTLY WHERE IT IS.
And they got rid of that. Because new and different and changes! Trendy!
I don't know about you, but my fingers are not see-through.
I doubt that even a fashion model could starve herself transparent.
If you haven't upgraded to iOS 13, DON'T!
DO NOT UPGRADE TO iOS 13.
I'm starting to think they don't beta test this crap anymore, or if they do, they ignore everything they're being told about exactly what a shitty piece of junk they've created, usability-wise. They must be sanitizing the beta reports for CEO protection.
I need to learn to never accept another system upgrade from them again, because they just no longer know what they're doing.
Without Steve Jobs around to scream at them for being morons, their work has gone from poor, to bad, to garbage.
Flashy, overpriced junk that JUST DOESN'T WORK.™
(This journal written on my Windows 7 desktop computer, because I have no chance in hell of ever successfully writing it on an i-Device)
Addendum: If you work at Apple, why not print this out and leave it on the CEO's desk for him to read?
Just don't tell the marketing department you did that.

Happy Turkey Day Everybody
Posted 6 years agoEat drink and be Mary. Or Linda. Or Fred. Or whatever your name is. I can't remember.
I have deleted all my videos from YouTube
Posted 6 years agoThere's a new rule called COPPA, which you can read about here:
https://vidiq.com/blog/post/coppa-k.....ntent-youtube/
Basically, the FTC has decided to go after YouTube, and YouTube has decided to screw things up for everybody, just to cover their own ass.
Any and every video posted to YouTube has to be marked:
a) This video is for kids
or...
b) This video is not for kids
Any video marked as being for kids will suddenly be cut off from pretty much every feature of the site. No comments, not findable by search, no recommendations. These videos basically become persona non grata. Exiled into obscurity.
So, what happens if you mark your video as NOT being for kids?
This is where it gets really fun: The FTC plans on regularly scouring the site for non-compliance, and they consider a mis-marked video to be non-compliance. What that means, is if your video is marked as being not for kids, and in their opinion THEY decide that it IS something kids might want to look at, they will hit you with a $42,000 fine for each video.
So, what do they consider to be the sorts of things that designate a video clearly targeted at kids? Cartoon characters and music. And as my videos featured happy, bouncy music with cover art that had cartoon bears on them, I had no doubt that the FTC would take one look at them, declare THIS IS TARGETING KIDS! and come after me.
So, those were my choices: drive myself into self-imposed exile, or face $252,000 in federal fines. (six videos X $42,000)
I went with the exile, and to make damned sure of it, I deleted everything.

Batwoman Fails
Posted 6 years agoI have given up on Batwoman. I tried to like it. I really did. It's part of the Arrowverse, and I like the Arrowverse. Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, The Legends of Tomorrow... all highly watchable. I'm looking forward to their big crossover crisis event coming soon. But this show...
I came into it eager to see what they were going to do with it. But now, I just have zero interest. I forced myself to sit through last weeks episode. I Just tried to watch episode six and I just couldn't do it, and it all comes down to one thing: The entire series is built around Batwoman's crazy sister. Every episode is about her. Every fucking episode! She's a lame half and half mix of The Joker and The Mad Hatter, because it seems they couldn't even be bothered to create a brand new bad guy. They just recycled bits of the old ones. And her story is played out. I'm tired of it, and I'm tired of her. This show has worn out it's welcome.
With the other Arrowverse shows, yes they have dramatic interpersonal stories going on with all the characters but those are a flavoring, a background that fits into, around and behind the main storylines. With Batwoman it's all soap opera, all the time, with maybe a passing few moments to remind you hey, this is a Batman thing. Remember Batman? He's not in this but we borrowed all his stuff.
How is it possible for a show this bad to come from the same people that make The Flash and Supergirl?

Public Poll: screen size
Posted 6 years agoIs 1920 X 1080 a fairly standard screensize these days?
It used to be everything was 640 X 480, then it was 800 X 600, and then 1024 X 768...
So what screen resolution do you use? What's considered the defacto standard for a computer these days?
Is there even a standard anymore?

50 Years Of Scooby Doo
Posted 6 years agoToday marks the day that, fifty years ago, the world was first introduced to Those Meddling Kids, And That DOG.
I think it's amazing that Frank Welker (Fred) can still do the teenager voice. He's also doing double-duty as the voice of Scooby Doo these days, too. The guy has talent. Look up his list of voicework sometimes. He's been in damned near everything.
Don't believe me? He was in Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Go look it up. He was the nazi monkey.
Anyway... to celebrate this most auspicious of occasions I'm here to present you with some UNOBTAINIUM - something that just a year ago was believed lost forever.
https://archive.org/details/tednicholsunderscores
Contained herein is an archive of the musical works of one Ted Nichols, who did background music for Scooby Doo, among other Hanna-Barberra shows. Inside you'll find backing music spanning multiple versions of the show, including the incidental "underscore" music from the original Scooby Doo, Where Are You, complete and unedited, straight from the recording booth with the studio engineer announcing which track is about to be recorded.
These are not, I repeat, not copied from episodes. These are the original master recordings. They are available in many formats including both mp3 and OGG. You can download them individually, in archived format or, if you have a torrent client, in one big torrent.
Now, let us never speak of Scrappy-Doo again.
Cheers!

Scooby Doo - Return To Zombie Island (spoilers)
Posted 6 years agoI made a mistake on this one, I admit it.
I watched the original first.
Scooby Doo On Zombie Island was the 1998 direct-to-video feature that kicked off a series of direct-to-video features that are still going to this day. And since it came out in 1998, and I hadn't seen it in a good long time, I decided to watch it back to back with the brand new sequel film "Scooby Doo - Return to Zombie Island." A refresher to bring me up to date so I could go in knowing what was going on, and would get any references they made to the story's continuity.
I probably shouldn't have done that. It only served to demonstrate what a weak piece of work this latest effort truly is. My opinion of it might have been somewhat higher if all I had retained were vague fuzzy memories of the original. Instead I ended up sitting there waiting for it to get as good as the original, while ticking off all the chances it had to do just that while failing.
The concept of the original was that for the very first time in a Scooby Doo story, the monsters were real. That was the selling point. They put it in the ads. So, the idea that this would be a sequel that would rip the lid off that concept was a neat one.
There were one of two ways they could have gone with that:
1) The monsters are real, and instead of debunking it, they were stuck with it and had to deal with it.
Or, alternately..
2) It was all a hoax and now, years later, they finally solve the mystery that had eluded them the first time.
Instead, they try to have it both ways and that just doesn't work.
In the original 1998 film, it's years later. The gang have broken up and gone their separate ways. Velma runs a bookshop, Shaggy and Scooby are customs inspectors at the airport, and Fred is the producer of the TV show that has turned Daphne into a celebrity. The Mystery Machine is long gone. So are the 70's groovy costumes. They have all grown up a bit and moved on. So, when they all come back together for this adventure, there are many comments about this being "just like old times." And to cap that off, Fred has painted "The Mystery Machine" onto the side of the minivan that he and Daphne use as a camera truck for her show. Cue the adventure, as off they go to New Orleans, to get wrapped up in a mystery deep in the bayous of Louisiana.
All of this is wiped completely out of continuity for the sequel.
They wear the 70's groovy costumes again, and Fred spends a chunk of the film mooning over the loss of The original 70's Mystery Machine. Because he's just sold it - Something we never actually see happen, and is referred to only in passing. This would have been a perfect opportunity to reintroduce the minivan version from the original film, but no. That's been wiped from history. They even quickly show the original 70s Mystery Machine in a flashback sequence of events from the first film just in case there was any doubt that this bit of history is now out of continuity. Daphne's celebrity career is also brushed off as something she did over summer break. Because they're all teenagers again, see. So, forget all that stuff from the first one.
The story that follows grazes briefly against the original, but only as a sort of background flavoring, and is primarily concerned with director Alan Smithee talking the kids into taking part in a monster film he's making on the island.
Basic Plot: After getting the gang to swear to never solve another mystery, Shaggy wins a "tropical paradise" vacation. So he and the gang head off to do just that and ignore any mystery that comes their way. The "tropical paradise" ends up being the island from the original film, now outfitted with plastic palm trees where Smithee is making a monster movie. The trip was a scam to get the kids to come be unwitting stars of his film.
And they don't realize it's the same island.
Not even after supposedly driving all the way to New Orleans and getting onto and off of the very same ferryboat from the original, at the very same docks.
The capper on the absurdity of this all comes when the Sheriff Of Their small town arrives at the end to wrap things up. Because I guess this really isn't the New Orleans bayou anymore?
It might as well be taking place at the end of the street, for all the attempts it makes to be faithful to the original's style, atmosphere or storyline.
As a Scooby-Doo film, it's weak. As a sequel it's a failure.
In fact, don't watch this. Go watch the original. You'll be happier that you did.
Final score: D-

EMERGENCY COMMISSION - CLOSED
Posted 6 years agoI hate having to do this, but it seems that fame comes with a dark side. Namely, DistroKid just yanked money out of my bank account that I couldn't afford to lose. I had no idea when I signed up with them that I was authorizing them to take money from me without even asking, but there it is. They took my money and now I can't afford this month's rent.
So, I need to grab some ultra-fast commissions to cover this hole.
I'm opening one $20 slot. That one character, color.
First one to jump on this, gets it.
UPDATE:
SLOT FILLED.
NO MORE REQUESTS PLEASE

Evil Twin Hosting UPDATE!
Posted 6 years agoAh yes... breath of relief.
I have good news.
Comic Genesis is fixed!
The Evil Twin website is updated to the latest episode, and it looks like I won't have to find a new host. Which is good, because I had actually looked around for an alternate host and found nothing that offered the quality of hosting that CG does.
I know most people are probably reading it here on FA, but it's not really a webcomic without it's own host page:
http://eviltwin.comicgenesis.com/
So.. it looks like the return is now even more happening than it was yesterday. We are truly back in business.
We're a thing again.

Comic Genesis alternatives?
Posted 6 years agoSo.. the big day has finally arrived. Evil Twin has once again dragged itself up out of its grave and has started lumbering across the internet seeking brains. And eyeballs. And hopefully the money in any wallet possessed by the owner of those body parts.
And some of you are probably asking WHAT WAS THE HOLDUP?
I had planned on being back sooner, but then the unthinkable happened. The comic's hosting provider, Comic Genesis, broke itself in a manner that made it unusable. And it wasn't getting fixed. So, I waited, and waited, sure that it would be one of those "any day now" things. A fix had to be pending. They wouldn't just up and walk away from it, right?
Yeah, well. It sort of seems they have. And I got fed up waiting. And then money got tight.
I don't make a whole lot of money, and the extra little bit that Evil Twin had been bringing in had been what kept me above water. So, with Comic Genesis down for the count, I was grinding through what little savings I had, month by month.
So, I gave up waiting. I've put in a message to the site admin asking about the site still being broken. I'm not holding out much hope though. Their forum, which once had been a bustling community of artists, has turned into a ghost town, and all of the most recent messages (which aren't that recent) are of the "Hey, my comic isn't updating!" variety with "And it never will, go find a different host." responses.
Even their TV Tropes page has written them off as a former website.
So, I'm throwing the door open to suggestions. Are there any actual alternatives?
Someplace easy to join, set up and migrate an existing webcomic into?
In the meantime, you can read the newest comic updates here, and on the Patreon:
https://www.patreon.com/talboc
We're back.
For a relative percentage of "back."
Don't applaud, just throw money.

Vanilla Frappuccino: copycat recipe
Posted 6 years agoHere's a recipe for copycat Vanilla Frappuccino that I worked out:
You'll need two clean, empty 13.7 oz Frappuccino bottles with the labels still on, for this.
In a large mixing cup:
1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup black coffee
Mix all that together until the sugar melts to create the "syrup"
Now, pour some of that syrup into each bottle, just upto where it says "Frappuccino" on the label
Then fill the bottle up to the halfway point of the neck, with milk
Chill and serve.
Should make just enough syrup for both bottles.

A question for other artists
Posted 6 years agoWhat canvas size, and pixel depth do you tend to use the most?
I started off way back in the late 80's doing digital art one pixel at a time using a mouse, at screen resolution (72 DPI) and some remnant of those days is still prevalent in my canvas choices. Although I have graduated from those old point-and-click "draw with a mouse" days, I still tend to work at screen res. And for a good long while, my canvas size of choice was 1200 X 1500 as this approximated the shape of a standard sheet of xerox paper, which was what I did most of my drawing on in the pre-digital days.
However, if you've been following my art, you may have noticed that I've started branching out a bit beyond that, into 1920 X 1080 (desktop wallpaper size for me) working wide, working square and trying to take advantage of basically having infinite canvas shapes and sizes at my disposal.
So, quiz for you digital artists - what's your own canvas and pixel depth preference?

I have DISABLED shinies.
Posted 6 years agoYes, FA has it's new tipping system. And a couple days ago I activated it and pointed that fact out.
I have now switched it off. Why?
Because PayPal are still officially in the business of banning any artists who use its service to earn income from adult-rated art.
And when asked about this, the FA admin's response was unclear on what PayPal would do, if an artist who posts adult artwork received tips through this system.
The FA admins have stated that they have been in steady contact with a PayPal representative, who has been working with them on setting the system up. They need to ask that representative point blank about what will happen if an artist gets tipped for posting adult-rated artwork, and either sound a very public all clear, or post a very public warning not to use the system if you post anything rated mature or above.
So, until such time as there is a clear and solid statement from the FA regarding this situation, I will be leaving shinies switched off.
It's just too much of a risk to use.
