To those of you suffering from mental illness
Posted 11 years agoI just want to take a moment to talk about something that’s very underestimated and misunderstood. Since the passing of Robin Williams yesterday, the internet has exploded with supporters of mental health awareness. It seems it takes something as tragic as losing a childhood icon for people to wake up and realize that mental health is nothing to laugh about or joke about.
Depression and Anxiety are nothing to joke about. They are very serious issues, and as much as it sucks to say this, many people suffer from these issues and are much too afraid to speak up about it and seek the help they truly need, all because society views these issues almost as a choice.
When a friend comes to you and says they’re depressed, is your first response “why are you depressed?” or “just think positive thoughts!” or “You have no reason to be.”
Little do you know, those responses are more damaging than they are helpful. If Depression was really that easy to fix, dont you think we would have done so already? Those kinds of responses make us feel as though our horrible state of mind and the pain we deal with every single day is a choice we inflicted on ourselves.
Depression is a legitimate medical condition. It’s not simply just a state of mind, it’s a sickness. your mind is out of balance and as a result it is negatively effecting your daily life, sometimes even to the point of physical illness. It’s easier to simply shrug off the flu than it is to shrug off a depressive episode. As someone who is battling it myeslf, I understand this very well.
I wanted to post this because I know I’m not the only one who is in a constant daily battle with something out of your control…and I also know that when you’re in that state of mind, it is very very very easy to feel that you are alone. It’s very easy to feel that no one truly cares about you and that you should just keep to yourself because it’s far better to do so than to bother anyone with your emotional issues. It’s very easy to hide away and avoid reaching out because its simply safer to do so….
That state of mind is harsh, it’s toxic, it’s self destructive. It’s not a safe place to be…
Depression is a cancer. It eats away at who you are until there is simply nothing left…in both an emotional and physical sense.
To those of you who have friends that are battling this illness, the absolute best thing you can do for them is be there for them…Don’t belittle their condition by asking them why they feel a certain way. Instead, empathize with them. Show them that you understand their feelings and that their feelings mean something to you. Listen to them, offer them comfort, and remind them that they are loved and cherished. Encourage them to keep moving forward. If not for my family being there for me and encouraging me, I would have never had the strength to seek therapy. Even if they act reclusive, do your part to encourage them to get out with you for a while. Positive distractions do absolute wonders for a depressive mind. Play a video game together, talk about a mutual passion, go out and have some lunch, whatever it is, your company and your distraction makes a whole world of difference….let them know that you are their crutch…let them know that they are not alone and they dont have to suffer alone…your love and your companionship could be the very thing it takes to sway someone’s decision to end their life.
To those of you who are battling this sickness, please know you’re not alone. I’m right there with you and so are countless others. You are not abnormal, you are not weird, and you’re definitely not alone. Your friends are there for you, and its ok to open up to them. You aren’t burdening them…they want to listen, they want to be there for you. You’re not messed up or irrational nor are you being stupid. Your emotions and thoughts are very real and they do matter. Don’t have someone that you feel safe turning to? Message me, email me, skype me, hell even text me. I will reply, I will listen, I will do what I can to help you. You don’t have to battle this alone…especially if suicide is on your mind. I will personally give you my phone number (just send me a message and ask for it) and talk to you for as long as you need me to listen, regardless of the hour, day, or where I am. You deserve to feel like you are loved, you deserve to feel like someone cares, and you deserve to be happy. You deserve to get better.
Please, all of you…Don’t belittle something as serious as this. If it wasn’t serious or a problem, we wouldn’t have lost so many good people to it already. Depression is a sickness, and those suffering from it deserve a cure. mental health is very underfunded in the medical world and its very rarely ever taken seriously by anyone other than those who actually treat it. If we all do our part to raise awareness of this very serious illness, if we all do our part to help those that we personally know to come out of the dark and encourage them to seek their cure, so many lives can be saved.
I know we can’t save everybody…but we can make a difference if we tried. If you can make a difference in at least one person’s life, that is a major victory for you and for them too.
Love each other and take care of each other. If we don’t, no one else will.
I love all of you.
