Why do people get upset over intellectualism?

I notice this a lot on social media when I leave comments. They don't even need to be attacking or correcting something. I could just be giving an opinion, sharing some information, or otherwise just saying something vaguely intelligent, and people seem to get very upset about it. It's often not even the person I'm responding to, but other random viewers who just can't stand someone saying something that isn't a meme, adoration, or poorly-worded insults. I just want to know why, in recent years, being intelligent and well-spoken triggers so many people. If I was being some kind of snob and talking condescendingly, that would be one thing, but even when I take great pains to be polite, I still catch shit.

However, rather than taking the hit from idiots and suffering, I find that if people attack you as such when it is uncalled for like that, striking back isn't such a bad idea if you've the stomach for it.
Don't have to lower yourself to their level, just a calculated retaliation I find often shuts people up if it hits the right spot.
It also goes with crab mentality (look it up). Basically they view you as "trying to be smarter than them" and try to knock you down so they don't feel so bad about themselves. That or they disagree with you but can't really express how they do so resort to memes or poorly worded insults.
