When producing star trek 2, the Reliant was originally a different kind of ship. What kind and why?

FYI, originally the Reliant was to be a constitution class ship, like the Enterprise. Early storyboards reflect this. However, they realized it would be hard to tell the ships apart in a space battle, so a new design was decided upon.

When they changed the design to it's current form, they sent the sketches over to Nicholas Meyer (the director) for approval. However, since he was overseason on another project at the time, he initialed the sketches approved upside down! So the art team flipped the engines and added the roll bar on top. ;)
