Damage Report - Dev's Linux Box

General
Forenote: the following incident has absalutely nothing to do with the fact the system was running Linux - don't worry fanboys, I'm not going to flame your precious lifeblood OS, it just happened to be the box I run linux on, thus I refer to it as "my linux box".
It started when I woke up. Now, generally, when you wake up, you don't expect to find red-hot glowing metal within ten feet of your bed, right?
Well, I did. I don't know what the hell happened to it, but I woke up this morning to discover the hard-drive in my linux box was literally glowing red-hot across the top. Freaky shit, yo.
So I ripped out of bed, yanked the power, and pulled the drive-drawer out. Ran outside and dumped the drive before it started a fire or some shit (god knows how it hadn't already). Except it was 4 bloody degrees out there. So I say to you, FUCK SCIENCE, especially the parts relating to "thermal reactions".
Put simply, upon hitting the cold-ass air/ground/atmosphere, the drive promptly 'exploded', so I had to dodge shrapnel as well, to top off the whole fuckered event.
On latter inspection, a large amount of the faceplate of the lower-half of the mini-tower case, and the faceplate of the CD rom that was above the drive, as well as numerous cable-casings inside the box, are melted quite badly.
I don't know quite how bad the damage to the system itself is beyond the loss of it's hard-drive and the data thereon. But man, that was one fucked up first 10 minutes of the morning.
Anyway, just for later-notage, I'm perfectly fine. I didn't get hurt; no fire started, and I managed to not get hit by bits of the drive when it popped. I was just freaked the hell out, and wondering if I should even bother trying to resurrect the box and find out how damaged it might be otherwise, or just junk it and be done with it.
My poor linux box. Ye shall be missed.

...And i know all to well about computer woes. Bit of advice; never go near Alienware. They suck. HARD.
I'm not sure though how much damage this explosion did.
i would suggest that you get a program that will automatically turn off your lynx box when the voltage or temp gets too high... i got some after my computer blowup, now if the cpu gets above 185 degrees then it will automatically turn off, also it theres a power serge and the voltage goes above 3.50 volts, it will shut itself off as well. its great, no more blown up parts.
Temperature and voltage monitors are fine, if the problem is in the motherboard, processor, or memory. But when it comes to media and storage devices, you're baked; your average hard-drive already runs extremely hot by nature, the outer casing prevents you from noticing just how hot those bastards are on the inside.
No amount of redundancy would have prevented what happened. These things are freak occurrances; but unavoidable ones.
(and for the record: I already use high-end hardware, even in my linux box - the motherboard already has a full array of safety sensors and auto-shut-off protections)
I no some one that did this to his old drive for fun. It's very impressive, until it goes bang.
I hope you did not lose to much, and that you are ok.
Hugs to you. =^.^=
I have over 7 cooling exhaust fans on my computer. I direction against the video card, 2 more on my Hard drives and other placed through out. I have also considered the liquid cooling systems, but they are to pricy for me.
Glad to hear you are ok though. Shrapnel is never fun. Uncle had a similar exerpeince, though that involved a gas can and a firepit.
You also might want to get in contact with the manufacturer. Apart from the fact that they will want to know *why* one of their drives got that hot and exploded, and it's very possible they will also want to make sure No One Else Finds Out. Or at least no one else finds out what make it was. That kind of thing can be bad publicity. At the very least you should be able to weadle a new drive out of them.
