How do you feel about achievements in games?
I'm torn on achievements. I love how they give me a sense of satisfaction, but only if I've done something worthwhile. Completing a game on hard mode? Good time for an achievement. Making me collect 700 feathers with nothing more than a little pop up? Fuck you. Do something really awesome? Cool, achievement. Normal story progression? Don't gimme anything for that.
As someone playing the game, I want to be rewarded for doing awesome things and accomplishing the hard stuff.
I don't want to be rewarded for just..playing the game. (Looking at you simpsons game that gives an achievement just for turning the game on.)
Also, FUCK multiplayer only achievements. I want to 100% so many games that I can't because I have to fucking play pvp/competitively. It infuriates me to no end.
I need to go back to that but there's just so much stuff to do, it's crazy.
A lot of fun though, a heck of a lot better than III was.
Yeah I agree with you fully there. I think there's a place for normal progression style achievements, end of chapters or finishing the game but yeah, not dumb stuff like "Picked up the gun" when it's the only option I had because you won't let me continue in the game until I do.
One thing I like is when an achievement gives me an idea for another way of playing the game. Not a great example but it's the only one I can think of atm but the achievement in Half Life 2: Episode 1 for finishing the game only firing a single bullet. That one was kinda BS cos it was the whole game but without that achievement the idea to do that would never have crossed my mind.
Multiplayer only achievements are balls. It also leads to situations where you simply can't get them, be it because the game is dead or in the case of 360 games the servers have been shut down.
Speaking of 360, I do really like the gamerscore thing and kinda wish Steam put points to achievements too but at the same time the absolute worst achievements were ones that ended with any number besides 0 or 5.
There was one game that gave you a 1 point achievement for starting it and a 99 point achievement for completing it, so until you did you'd have a dumb score like 15,751 or something >.>
Oh, just remembered one of my favourite achievements actually, the one in Portal 2, The Part Where He Kills You (This is that part).
The joke was funny anyway what with the dialogue and the chapter title but the achievement was just the icing on the cake.
Finishing the game? Fine. End of chapter? Not..really. Not unless it's like a side quest or something that I'm going out of the way to do it. And I definitely love the different ways of playing! Those are awesome!
Yeah. I feel the same here~
Speaking of achievements, have you played a game for longer than you would otherwise because of achievements?
Yes. Quite often! Sometimes it's enjoyable, but other times, I feel like I'm just grinding it out for the achieves.
Then we get the guy they didn't bother giving a personality to >.>
Heh I'm the same. I recently finished Betrayer and it was just cos I looked at the achievements and they all seemed doable. I was about half way through the game thinking "I am not enjoying this" but I did it anyway.
I bought betrayed ages ago but haven't gotten around to playing it. One of these days, maybe.
I remember Giantbomb talking about how they thought the series would keep going forward in time from the Crusades until eventually we got the Desmond game and it always seemed like a bad idea to me. Maybe if Desmond was a more interesting character but about the only interesting thing to happen with him would be the end of the first game and whichever one had the thing with Lucy.
Though I guess having Q for a father was kinda cool too =p
Also it's funny how in AC1 Altair is just a dude and each game keeps adding stuff to him that he's become basically the patron saint of the Assassins, it's kinda dumb.
I'm liking Kenway so far, he's a neat character. Kinda cute too >.>
Betrayed isn't bad, though it is very samey. I think if it wasn't for the aesthetic it probably would have flown under the radar.
...but I love the dogs so they aren't about to be going anywhere.
