Unemployed

... For the first time since I was 18. No reason was given, and they even acted surprised when I asked for one. No, not just surprised- totally disarmed.
7 years of hard work in the uppermost echelons of performance, active and creative solutions to problems that I volunteered to fix, flexibility that wouldn't be asked of Mr. Fantastic...
And they couldn't even imagine why I would wonder why I was being laid off instead of someone else who didn't or couldn't do what I could. Even the Human Resources Manager's parting message of "We appreciate your service" was the most hollow, robotic and unconvincing thing I could ever imagine. And yet, instead of being devastated, I feel so happy I could burst. Because nobody cared from the beginning, and the torture of working for unfeeling boss-robots could only be relieved by my release.
This is the face of employment now. Fog-brained hyper-corporatism that micromanages the individual. How hard you work, what you accomplish, how much you improve the company... none of that matters. Nothing matters. Employees are a hardship, a cost to be minimized, an obstacle standing clumsily in the way of making more money. From a time when the relationship between worker and employee was one of treasured trust and dedication both ways, we've fallen so far into low expectations that we can't even imagine our employers caring about us.
Can we take it back, please? Can we begin demanding that our corporations be human? If we're too afraid to talk to our own bosses, can we walk into each other's workplaces and humiliate these educated idiots for having no idea what comprises a decent person?
Can we just... have anything, anymore?

Best of wishes to ye!
Best of wishes to ye!
to be tremendous cheapskates. The coperate world see's us as meer resources, not as people. Its how this country has become.
No one can be human. we must all be perfect little machines that they can replace for cheaper models. Its why our economy is dieing. Because they dont wanna pay for quality.
On a side note. I worked for them for nearly 5 years.(retail) Sence i was fired. they've gone through over 5 people.. I only lost my job in june.. every other person after me was found stealing, or breaking other laws. the companys just dont deal with human beings. they deal with numbers only.. and us workers for them. are just numbers.
That's what I'm doing.
One with flexible hours and better wages.
I just wish there was one for the folks that need a job
here in America instead of them sent overseas.
Corporations that screw folks over need to get the
business end of a horny whale's dick.
in charge hurt so many with corporate mentality... that and their
mindset that "anyone is disposable".
Second, I can tell you - being in the boat where your bosses actually do seem to care that you're being fired... and still fire you... it ain't no better. You just kind of wanna slap them across the face and call them liars, or tell them they didn't even try to reverse the decision, but you know they aren't, and you know they did. It's a lot more disheartening when they do give you all the best praise and well wishes and each and every one of them gives you a "If you ever need a reference, just put me down" speech.
That feeling sucks donkey balls.
And yeah, that is true... but I mean then again, at least hopefully the working relationship isn't awful, to make up for it?
HAHAHAH.
Oh god... the peer pressure.
The begging.
The pleading.
The unwanted extra hours.
The vapid stares when you try to clawingly explain you don't want the extra hours.
No. I think when you're underseat, and an asset, being known by your higher ups has limited rewards.
... but, yah, I suppose. I wouldn't've gotten away with half the shit I eventually had the courage to if I remained anonymous.
I just wish they'd bribe me with food more often.
his workers can dish out. His attitude will end up sinking
his business if he keeps that up.
He sounds as ungrateful as they come.
Won't be surprising when he has his workers walk
out on him... or some undercover newscaster shows
how he operates.
But that's wishful thinking.
This is the sad state of employment as a whole right now, employers can treat their employees however they like.
I'd say more but talking about employment always makes me rant/depressed ;) But yeah, best of luck!
Just make sure it's a job that you would love to work for. ^w^
*huggles* I'm terribly sorry to hear you're unemployed. You seem like sucha clever, smart quick guy! Someone's gonna hire you, and then your past bosses will regret they let you go. X3
You hit the nail right on the head there. In my case, I was driven into quitting rather than fired, but it's all the same. I'm struggling along now, but I do not miss that job at all. When the economy sucks, some employers just use it as an excuse to take a big shit on their workers and expect them to be grateful just to have a job at all.
^ Truth.
GG everything wrong with the USA
Kinda happened to me within the past year, laid off with little fanfare, but not with nearly as much history with the employer, so I can't quite imagine that feeling.
I'm fairly used to being unemployed lately, I moved to an area with barely any jobs, because I couldn't afford to live in the city. I found some summer work, thankfully, But it really sucks how they just let you go after 7 years! The buggers always go "It's hard economic times!" I bet they don't give themselves a paycut or anything. It's really short-term thinking, too. It's bad for the economy, it's bad for their company in the long run.
Anyway, I'm sorry they screwed you over like that! I wish you luck in finding a new job! *Superhug* And if you ever wanna talk or anything to get your mind off things, i'll be around!
In the meantime, in case you weren't aware(I'm assuming you are a U.S. Citizen, if you're from somewhere else I'm sorry), all unemployment benefits you receive are actually paid BY your employer and if you were released without any reason, even in a state with "At will" employment where they aren't required to give you a reason, after 7 years, you are entitled to full benefits for 99 weeks.
Please make use of that time, and their money, going on about your corporate experience because I feel like you kind of have something to say here, or if you don't feel like doing that, draw more pictures because frankly your art style is pleasing and your content is quirky and amusing and tends to brighten my day.
I'm not sorry you lost your job since you seem so happy to be free of them, but I do hope you find a new job very soon, and it really sucks to be treated like a cog and not a person.
But yah, man is that moment of walking out the door shockingly exhilarating.
I just wish more people were like my bosses =( they actually saved me from the hook once DX
stupid things like these make me wonder just how easy it is to fire people nowadays
Hope you find another that will appreciate you a lot better.
And nope, we can't change it, and unfortunately, it's only going to get worse.
If in your jobhunt you find an inventory company by name of RGIS, avoid them. I used to work for them and they gave many false promises, and I had found out years later after leaving them that they had cut the wages of their employees, not just new ones, but those that were there over a decade working while those in management had no such cutbacks.
What is it with this world where it seems that those that don't do much and skip out a lot are the ones that get raises, but those that actually do hard work are the ones that get the short end of the stick?
Well, you worked a long haul! Take some time to get some rest and then best of luck doing it all over again. Just remember, jobs aren't easy to come by now-a-days!
Funny, with the economy not doing so well and jobs being so scarce, you'd think the good people that work for someone would be a little more treasured... But no, not really. If they're paying you more than anyone else around, they'll eventually dispose of you to switch you out for someone they can pay less. Don't worry, they'll dispose of that person someday too.
It sucks a lot. But at least, at the very least, you have co-workers. I tend to brighten my co-workers day when I go to work. I find this more important as an impact on my workplace than anything.
There is never a 'good time' to be let go. Everyone says it comes at the worst time. Its disrupting your stability, I know. I was once laid off 2 weeks after moving 2100 miles and buying a new house. I know what they are going through, and I do care. I just cant do anything about it. I'm the bad guy and trying to not be is just going to fail miserably.
I'm glad you feel liberated. I hope you have a speedy job search and find the job that's right for you. Good attitude will take you far, more so than moping around ever will.
But it is no wonder how people like Wally (from Dilbert) can really exist with an attitude like that.
The only way it seems to be respected is to be self-employed. But that is very difficult and risky too.
Any plans on what you gonna do now? Unemployment is one of the hardest jobs of all. You get hardly any money, you are in constant worry and you have to write dozens of letters and talk with people to get a new job.
There is definitely a portion of the 1% who would be perfectly happy with no middle class at all and have us be some 3rd world banana republic with 1% rich, 1% middle class and 98% dirt poor
there will always be butts
Do hope you find something better soon tho :)
As long as you can find work doing something you enjoy, you'll never work a day in your life. If anything, having many jobs over your lifetime is a healthy thing. So don't feel too bad.
Consider this a chance to find something new to experience.
And good luck!
It's kinda sick that people who need jobs (like me) can't get 'em, and people who have jobs are losing them or taking hits (lower pay and such) to keep them.
Don't EVER call me lazy. Being poor is hard.
I'm real sorry to hear you lost your job (and I'd be pretty shocked, too), but I'm happy it sounds like you could find something good about that, even if it's just the "confirmation of how things really are". (That can be a relief, to me at least.)
I recognize that feeling of... Lack of human mind /heart in a company. Factory floor was a lot like that; us workers were obviously more of an inconvenience than anything half the time. It's downheartening when you feel that there's no difference if you go all-out and pitch in whenever you can, because you're not going to make anyone happier, you know? Or even notice. That's the kind of spirit that makes people hide in the break room after breaks are over (well, that and the fact they're exhausted from too many hours without breaks).
Lately, I've had my hours cut, which I desperately need to pay off bills, because of 'budget cuts'! Furthermore, I keep seeing new people being hired and working the same amount of hours I used to, even though they had their 'budget cut.' I seriously believe they're just gonna hire new people and fire me just so they don't have to pay me the extra couple bucks an hour!
I've never been fired before. I quit once, but only to save what little sanity I had left working at a tedious, mind-numbing job! I'm afraid if I lose this job, I won't find another in time to save me from drowning in ever-mounting debt! O_____O *bag-breathes*
I own a tiny corporation. I'll let ya know when I become a soulless automaton who no longer cares about funding land management research and preserving natural resources.
I might let you know when I start making money so I can start doing that, too...
