Dealing with raw audio

I upgraded my audio editing software recently and, because I haven't used it much over the last month, have completely forgotten just what it is I'm supposed to do with these files before they're finished. @_@ The first step is normalization; I think the second is compression, but I forget if that's the word. If I can find the word, I can figure out how to do it, it's just making sure I'm calling it the right thing.
And while I'm here... That's just for speech. I Love Music and dramatic readings and the like. Musicians, what do you do to your vocals, assuming you multi-track, to make them sound nice? I'm not sure if what I do with speech is the sort of thing I should do with vocals.

I could go in to more depth, but I would rather not fill up a reply with due process. :P
I'll have to see what the compression options are. I forget what I used to use; I only got maybe two tracks done before my computer crashed, that's why I don't remember how to do it. :/
