I would fucking give anything for a sequel. First born child? Pinky finger? You name it. I'd throw a [OBJECTIONAL_OBJECT] into a woodchipper for a sequel/remake to Descent Freespace.
So fucking awesome. Sadly though I doubt there will be more space sims anytime soon, FS2 didn't sell well at all. Though I do know something about a Homeworld esque game that is on the horizon from some of the people behind the first Homeworld.
You should check out the open source project for Freespace 2. They've done some excellent work with the game engine. especially considering how old it is.
I liked Another World, but the sequel Fade to Black was one of my favorite games of all time. I just loved the fact EVERYTHING could kill you, and EVERYTHING had its own special animation for it.
i tried it and kinda hated it, At the time there was alot of space simulators comeing out. The one i wanted to play was Homeworld, but me and my friends didnt have a compatible computer. In 2003 i found my love child with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freelancer_(video_game)
Theres free downloads of this game everywhere. I have so many memories of playing with new mods and even delving deep into the very heart of Nomad Space (picking up their fabled energy weapons for ma ship along the way)
^_^ I cant wait for SWTOR now. Its all i talk about
^_^ You could become a pirate in Freelancer. Attack trade lanes and Jump Gates (since trade traffic flows in and out). You could camp a Jump Gate, scanning Cargo and wait for the right shipment to come in (i.e gold, diamonds) and if you didnt know the prices, there was an instant market option to see how much they went for in your system.
Or do missions to up lvl's. Or become a trader and bring stuff in and out of systems for profit. ^_^ However you wanted to play it. It was fun to have a flexible way to lvl inbetween Storyline Missions.
Oh yes ... you could very much be a pirate. There was an alignment system and everything. ... no missions, just simple goals of buy low, sell high, make large planets and kill each other. Doesn't get any better than that.
FUCK YEAH FREE SPACE! Best space-flight sim ever. We do need a new one.
Besides FS2 which everyone else is saying, there was also an expansion for the original....
There's also "THe Babylon Project", which uses the FS2 engine to make a Babylon 5 game... free to downlaod if you can find t. lots f fun. :3
Also, in the same vein, there's FS-like game that was made by the wing-commander people called "Star Lancer". It's fun, but it lacks the wing-man controls of FS. On the other hand, missles are arctually dangerous. :x
I also have to say, this is the only game series in HISTORY where you don't mind escort missions (especially the first mission you get the avenger cannons for.... sweet vengance!)... and probably the only flight sim where your wingmen are actually worth a damn.
The hotlines for sacrificing to Saytan and Cazic-Thule are open! Please be in front of a blood altar with jagged sacrificial dagger in hand when making your call.
Completely agree, this game and its sequel were two of my favorite games ever. I'm completely bummed that this entire GENRE of game seemed to just evaporate shortly after. :|
Dodging the giant beam cannons always made any battle intense as shit. You ALWAYS feared a beam cannon going off right in front of you... or, uh... on you.
Yeah the beam cannons were an enormous improvement over FS1. As much as I enjoyed FS1, even I at times was like "it's a little silly that I can destroy capital ships using the lightest ship in the game".
Ships and missiles and beam canons firing all over the place; that's the way it should be. "You see all that shit going down over there? Yeah, you're gonna fly into it." Blood-pumping!
I don't know... what little I did play of the demo that was the best part, because you had to kind of know what you where doing with the whole shield stuff. :| It was hard, but believable... now this beam cannon shtick? I believe that might be cool, I might have to get these games when I can.
You really should, you're missing out an a piece of gaming history. I haven't played it for years and years, so I'm not sure if it's aged well or not. You should definitely give it a try though, at LEAST Freespace 2.
If Jumpgate Evolution ever gets released (so far it's limping along like other vaporware MMOs that sound cool on paper but never got finished) it'll be the first space sim I've seen in a long time.
You have good taste in games, Dragoneer. The space shooter genre is sadly just about dead, outside the odd indie game like X3.
However, Freespace is not quite dead: There is still a devoted following keeping the game up-to-date. You see, Volition released the source code to Freespace 2 several years back. Some independent fans have since been updating the code, making it use modern graphics capabilities, adding vehicles, adding new campaigns, and even totally rewriting it for new games (like The Babylon Project - Babylon 5 using Freespace's engine!).
I would highly recommend looking at these sites and doing your own research if you want a modernized Freespace:
To be honest this looked really crap and nerdy lol... The trailer says almost nothing other than "big sci fi shit with guns and space ships and a women with a manjaw*
They died out. I wanted to love EVE, but fuck me, that was like Microsoft Excel in Space™. It was so slow and boring to play. And Earth and Beyond was originally Wing Commander Online (more like Privateer online) but then it got raped over.
I miss Wing Commander so fucking much. God damn. Wing Commander IV was one of the best games /ever/.
"SO WHAT if few billion people die. Well, THEY WEREN'T WORTHY ANYWAY!"
"Why can't we be more like the Kilrathi? Addicted to conflict; the only meaning of life being found in death!? Tell is all Admiral! Is that the price of freedom?"
Hee... Oh man oh man. Loved that same so much. Glad to see you did to Dragoneer. };>
Privateer was fantastic. I wish they'd been able to make Freelancer like Privateer all grown up, but it got nerfed by Microsoft, and wasn't allowed to be all it might have been. :S
I pretty well think that the last greatest chance for a space sim died there, with Freelancer.
Same here, Long time Descent Vet. and proud member of the Wildcards for about 10 years now Those games had a very good community and awesome lan parties.
But good news is theres a descent fan made game thats been in the works for about three years now and its almost complete. Bunch of guys In {ROX} and {VON} are using the Doom 3 engine. Seen a few levels and videos looks pretty snazzy.
But you see interplay went under and dropped the series. People complained that the controls where to difficult to master and the system requirements where to high at the time for the general public to want to purchase it.
The closest thing I've even seen to game play would be the Aircraft combat in battlefield 2. Very different but Very similar as far as learning curve and skilled pilots.
Now ive got a few trackers that list every server still up and running for D2 and Descent 3 if you want them let me know.
Oh god. I still remember the first time I played the demo for this on my grandma's Win98 PC. And it was incredible back then. Quite honestly, it still is by most of today's standards. I have yet to play 2 though. D:
There's a few still around, but they're not as prevalent as they once were. Most of 'em these days are total-conversion mods to old games (see my comment below) or made-from-scratch independent or small-name games like Evochron Legends.
I'm getting my space "fix" with EVE Online right now, but while it is fun, it's just not as immersive as I'd like.
Haven't played FS1 or 2. I do have a total-conversion mod for FS2_Open called The Babylon Project (two guesses what it's based on, and the first one doesn't count), but I can't get it to recognize my joystick.
I'm anxiously awaiting another FS2_Open mod called Diaspora, based on new-BSG. Looks absolutely epic.
I only played the second one and I don't remember anything like that.
Totally. I want a modern one. :S
So fucking awesome. Sadly though I doubt there will be more space sims anytime soon, FS2 didn't sell well at all. Though I do know something about a Homeworld esque game that is on the horizon from some of the people behind the first Homeworld.
Tell more, tell more!
*drool*

All I'm saying.
Best god damn joystick you'd ever want.
That's right, my joystick moved YOU.

A better space combat sim there has never been.
Justin Bieber?

ALSO: i want the suffering 3. make it. Make it NAO!

As long as this Freespace SourceCode Project is alive I'll certainly hope for MOAR!!!
I thought I was going to get to complain about this journal not being about Descent Freespace
Why have you forsaken me, Dragoneer
I'm sure the game is amazing though

I'd love to see another Tie Fighter too. *But it HAS to have iMUSE!!!!* Playing it to a CD audio track isn't nearly as rewarding.

What kind of game is it? Fighter game? RPGish? FPS? Strategy?
There were several mod communities that worked on updating/expanding FS2. I wonder if any of them are still around...
Yes, a Freespace 3 would be awesome.
I'm getting my space "fix" with EVE Online right now, but while it is fun, it's just not as immersive as I'd like.
Oh well, guess it wasn't that popular among the overall gaming scene back in the day either.
