Mapping.
No not documenting the geographical data of the real world. Mapping for games.
Only a handful of people would be aware that I even do it. Fact is I've been mapping since Carmack released the editor for Doom way back in the day.
I've mapped for everything from Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, to Heroes of Might and Magic and Starcraft, even mapped for games a lot of people don't even realize you CAN map for, like Ragnarok Online.
I've mapped for a fuckton of games, but only a handful of those have I ever been good with. It has a lot to do with the rythem of the editor software and freedom of the engine. Doom or Starcraft for example, very smooth rythem to the editors, decent amount of freedom for what you want to do (limited, obviously, but freedom and limitation are two different things).
Doom 3's editor is my current punisher. I've been working with this bitch since not long after Doom 3 actually came out. I'm still technically learning it; re-aquainting myself with it, more accurately, and christ if taking a long break from mapping in between helped any.
See between actual work shifts and other commitments, I'm actually trying to put together a nice, clean, original map for Doom 3 that lives up to my own tastes. And finding myself drowning in inspiration for it, but starving for enthusiasm to do it.
See I know how to do what I want to, for the most part. I know how good it will look/play when I do it. I know it's going to be impressive to the end-user if I release it. But at the end of the day, I know how much work it takes, and how much trouble I could have if the editor and/or engine doesn't want to cooperate with any given element one after another to get to that stage.
As if that wasn't enough, I'm lonely. And no I'm not asking no one to come keep me company, I'm lonely because the people I choose to spend my time with, normally, are pissing me the hell off lately. All of them. One way or another, they're all fucking pissing me off, and I'm half-tempted to decide it's deliberate.
I'm not going to sit around and name names or divulge details on anything. I'm just saying it as simply as I can, and to those people who know damn well how close they're /supposed/ to be to me, take note of this: you're all pissing me off, badly, and I'm damn close to telling you all to go hell.
You can only push me so far before I push you the fuck away.

FA+

And that you can get this map done, if that's really what you want.
If I could make a suggestion though, the forums off PlanetHalflife.com have a mapping section, in which you should be able to easily find some moderately skilled WC users who already toy with HL2 mapping regularly who are all up for the chance to be in on a mod project.
Modding guys there would be more than happy to help you with problems and advice as well.
But after getting a CD burner and playing with CD-RWs I accidently lost all my cool Duke Nukem 3D maps. Never got too much into doom maps though, but D3D maps where so much easier to make.
Tried to make a 3D map of my school and even some train type ones like the one in the Blood demo.
Map some other crazy stuff too.
Also, I tried a hand at mapping for SRB2, a sonic fan game using the doom engine. I map some maps, but cant say any where really any good.
Though I did like my racing map alot with all the waterfall effects, but aparently others in the SRB2 community had to edit my map to make it bigger and un challanging. Though that might be cuase its easier to play with a gamepad xD I love my gampads :3 (mice are over rated)
Ive long since been out of the community and strangly my old SRB2WAD website is still being hosted by angelfire funny enough xD
Anyway, if your looking for inspiration for a game, I say a good idea is to go look at older games and stuff. Or try to look up castles or something.
For me, Id just make something flat and just go random until I come up with an idea.
Though underwater stations are always cool xD
Like the one for UT I found that took place in an abandoned underwater station thing that infinitly sunk downward into the dark depths of the ocean. Along with strange looking sharks that go by in the distance.
Very cool map that was.
I say the best maps are ones on wrecked floating/sinking stuff.
Flying fortresses, sinking stations. Or even really weirdo mixs of things like houses or neighborhoods cuaght into a strange void thats mixed with other areas. One part stuck deep underwater while strangly another part is dry put seems to be sucked into some sorta strange black hole.
Eh.... sorry, I get lots of ideas xD Hope it helps though.
As for the annoying poeple. My best advice is to find a nice queit comfertable spot and meditate alone for awhile. Aggrivation can builid a bit sometimes.
Good luck with stuff, and uh, I gotta see your maps sometime ^_^
I've done some myself, only on StarCraft though. That's my weakness game, or rather most of Blizzard's for that matter.
*gives hugs*
