General
The season continues! It's Marty with the week 14 results:
- In Austin, The Blues were hoping to get some separation in their division, as they faced against the Dragons. Good news for Grand Rapids, Kira Casianno was back as a starting QB and she did pretty well in her return (179 yards and 2 TDs). But the problem once again seems to be Grand Rapids inability to capitalize on their chances as the Blue were riding high on the work of rookie Ica Laamenaa, as Austin led up to 23-0 early in the game.Grand Rapids seemed to gain some traction, Thanks in part of a pick six from Bennie Sierra (1st Defensive TD in his 13th season) but at this point it was 30-16 for the visitors. Carrice Kenton was stellar in the game, rushing for 117 yards on the ground and allowed the Blues to control the game. Austin wins this one 36-23.
- Holy shit, are the Corsairs real? After weeks of steady progress that saw the New Orleans teams just skyrocket up the power rankings, they received the visit of the defending champs and just…..BTA them, pardon my lingo. You could argue that the Renegades were going in with the veteran Andrew Calder, fitting in for the injured Becker and if it wasn’t any bad omen, Calder would fumble the ball on his first snap.Theodore Dupre continues to progress with flyings colors as a QB (234 passing yards, 2 TDs) and even got sat in the fourth quarter. With all the ground taken by the Corsairs, the real star was New Orleans kicker Kado Kazeban, who would kick a career/team record 5 for 5 in FGs, was totally flawless. Not much else to say about North Florida, as they just need to move on from this one. New Orleans wins this one 42-6.
- In Miami, the Tropics would get the visit of the New York Defiant. It was a rather tough game as Miami got a shoutout in the first half, only managing 6 points in the second half, while the Defiant simply rolled the rushing tank all over their Defensive line, thanks in part to running back Alex Smith (160 rushing yards and 1 TD). A scary moment though, as in the third quarter, Star QB Emi Tachibana went down awkwardly as her leg definitely wasn’t supposed to bend the way it did, as she had to leave the game. While It was no consequences for the Defiant in this game, the injury reports tell it was a hyper extended knee and Emi was listed as Questionable for next week. Not the news they wanted to hear as they were fighting tooth and nail with Montreal and Nashville for the division crown. New York wins this one 28-6.
- In a very Freakin’ WIMDY game in Colorado, The Crushers were facing California, as they would have the return of Kiedo Masguarde for them. Alas, it would be a great outing for him, as Aspen Redfield would once again show off his classic veteran form, throwing for around 400 yards passing again( 393 yards passing, 2 TDs and 1 INT). Jeordi Khalil had a career day, catching for 125 yards and Adam Poston had his first career Interception. Ashley Rorish had 12 tackles in the day in a losing effort for the Demons. Colorado wins this one 30-6.
- In Downriver, the Bald Eagles were in this game to win it, and as it has been known for a long time, if you stop Lillian Newman from running, you have great chances of winning. And they did just that, they limited Newman to 61 yards on the rush, her fewest since week 10 and sacked her 6 times! Meanwhile, rookie phenom Java Jenkins went in for another explosive day as he rushed for 143 yards, and scored a TD. Everything was almost perfect for the Eagles, until Draco Lindwurm was taken out of the game, suffering a concussion. But at the very least, QB Michelle Housley went in to complete the job for Easton, as she scored 1 TD on the pass and on the rush. Easton wins this one 40-16.
- In Chicago, im sure the Corsairs would gladly send some mardis gras beignets for the Royal, as they went in against their rivals the Outlaws, which looked like they were missing a few bullets in their arsenal. Jean-Étienne Tremblay was out for this game and fellow back Valerian Dehaan could not match Tremblay contributions, so was their top wide receiver John Gradkowski also was out for the matchup. For the Royal’s side, Tyron Appleby was finally back and to much of Chicago Chagrin, he was in top form (258 passing yards and 2 TDs). Running Back Yash Zuro gashed the Chicago defense for 111 yards and 1 TD, Vito ran for 2 TDs as it was a rare occasion in which Montreal totally ran rough shots and bullied the Outlaws the whole game. Montreal wins this one 35-13.
- In Las Vegas, a tight matchup between the Bandits and the Tuts would happen, Both fighting hard to regain some footing in their playoffs races, Nashville finally would celebrate the return of their QB Roman Oliviera back in the main saddle. The game was really tight till the very end, as obviously the Nashville attack was trying to get their bearings back with Roman, as they although only managed only 228 yards of total offense. Las Vegas Kicker Claire Sasakibara would miss two FGs in this game (which might have made a difference in a certain way) but Vegas would manage to tie the game 17-17 towards the end. But right at the finish line, Roman would give back to his team for missing 4 games as he would throw a 68 yards last minute bomb (which was a third of their total offense) to Steven Silvanis and score the game winning TD in the nick of time. Nashville wins this thriller 24-17.
- In Baltimore, Marc Édouard Carpentier would leave the game in the third with a turf toe injury, as an undisciplined Richmond Flames (100 yards of penalties) made it easy for the Ponies on this one. Kennedy Rodriguez ran for 135 yards with 2 TDs, a first in his career, Tyler Kim potted his longest FG in his career at 51 yards and Jillian St-Claire continued to return to form (209 passing yards, 2 TDS). Baltimore wins this one 37-14.
Players of the Week
Offense: Kennedy Rodriguez (RB – BAL): 135 rushing yards and two rushing TDs
Defense: Forrest Buckley (DE – EAS): three tackles and two sacks
Special Teams: Kado Azeban (K – NOC): Five field goals and three extra points
Here the preview of week 15, on sunday January 25th:
Downriver (5-7) @ North Florida (8-6)
It was most certainly not the week the Waves wanted to have happen, not only losing to the 4-9 Bald Eagles, but also seeing the Blues and Ponies both win convincingly in their games. But as repeated almost like a broken record to this point, the Continental Conference is wide-open in terms of the playoff standings, so by no means was it a death blow for the Waves. They may have lost four of their last five, but this might be the perfect time to scuffle with the division rival Renegades, who have lost their past two games by a combined score of 85-23; not to mention the 43-17 defeat to the Waves in Week 13. Something is going on with their defense and it's unknown what. Caryn Becker is expected back for this game, but should the Waves complete the sweep, they'll be right in the mix not just for a wild-card spot, but the Continental East title; something we thought was unheard of a few weeks back. The Renegades are now staring at three straight divisional games through to Week 17.
Easton (4-9 [E]) @ Montreal (10-3)
The Defiant and Tuts both matched Montreal's win in Week 14, which puts all three teams on 10 wins with six weeks remaining. With New York on their second bye, Montreal can temporarily take the division lead with a win hosting the Bald Eagles. Keonte Hughes is expected to miss his second straight game dealing with that wrist injury he suffered in Baltimore, but their other receivers in Robert Loera and Nicholas Baker are expected to be back as they tune-up for their playoff push before their second bye week. The Bald Eagles were able to bounce back after their heart-breaker to the Corsairs, but were eliminated after results in Chicago and Miami didn't go their way. They're currently 3rd in the 2025 UFFL Draft order, and looking back at the early returns on their 2024 draft, Java Jenkins and Colton Wolcott have been very bright spots for this Bald Eagles team. However, they're dead last in the United Conference in points against, yards against, and rush defense, so there's little doubt that their defensive front will be a point of emphasis in the offseason.
Miami (1-11 [E]) @ Baltimore (7-5)
The Defiant finally put the mathematical dagger into the Tropics and eliminated them from the playoffs, but it was relatively known they would miss the playoffs since they started 0-5. Similar to the Bald Eagles, their 2024 draft has shown very promising early returns, as Maverick Bialkowski has the joint lead on the team in sacks, and Star Holcomb is second on the team in scrimmage yards while leading the team in touchdowns. It's too soon to tell if Wil Hudson is the future quarterback moving forward in Miami; he's played relatively well considering the barren amounts of talent on the roster, but you have to wonder if the Tropics will select a quarterback should they lock up the 1st overall pick, or trade down to collect more assets. But for the Ponies, their season is FAR from over, having taken joint-first place in the Continental East division after dismantling the Flames last week. Jillian St. Claire has played well since their second bye, completing over 68% of her passes with 5 touchdowns and no turnovers. They have games against the Crushers, Waves and Renegades looming in the next three weeks, so a reeling Tropics team is a game they cannot afford to lose in such a close playoff race.
Colorado (9-5) @ Grand Rapids (4-9)
The Crushers continue to win, whether it'd be close games, blowouts, and everything in between. It seems like so long ago that the Crushers were sitting in last place in the Continental West after six weeks, having just lost to the Flames. But since then, they're a superhuman Darius Smith performance in Chicago from being undefeated since that loss and are threatening to run away with the conference's 1-seed for the playoffs. In fact, if things go their way, they can be the first team to clinch a playoff berth if they win in Grand Rapids; a team they already beat in a close game two weeks prior. But this is now do-or-die for the Dragons. The division title is out of reach, but a loss here would almost certainly sink their playoff chances into Lake Michigan for the third straight season. It also doesn't help that they likely won't have one of their top receiving threats in Dahlia Taylor available this week either.
California (5-9 [E]) @ New Orleans (8-6)
The Demons have now lost four straight, and with it, their playoff chances fell into the Pacific. To their credit, they haven't had any luck with the injury bug this season, needing to trade for an emergency offensive tackle not even five weeks into the season, and it never really got any better from there from quarterbacks to linefurs to defensive backs all hitting the IR at some point. With four games left, they look to play spoiler, but they'll have their work cut out for them against a Corsairs team firmly believing they're a FurBowl contender after absolutely dismantling the defending champion Renegades by 36 points. They now have the considerably easier schedule than the Outlaws, who lost to the Royal last week, and only have to be one game better than Chicago the rest of the way. If this is the season the Corsairs finally break their long playoff drought, Theodore Dupre will never have to buy a drink in New Orleans again.
Austin (7-7) @ Richmond (3-10)
With three straight wins all against fellow wild-card chasers, the Blues have started to separate themselves from the pack and are a game up on the Waves for the second wild-card spot. Catching the Crushers is not out of reach just yet as their schedule is slightly easier, but they will need some help in the following weeks to shorten the gap if they want to host a playoff game. Richmond is simply trying to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, but after their seventh straight loss in a game that was largely over at halftime, they realistically are now looking to 2025. Much like Easton and Miami, their run defense and points allowed per game is among the worst in the league; something they will have to address quite extensively this offseason. But as of now, they can safely say have their QB of the future.
Las Vegas (6-7) @ Nashville (10-4)
Surprisingly, this is the only non-divisional matchup this week. After losing at home to the Tuts last week, the rematch in Nashville has much higher stakes for the Bandits. Lose this game and it effectively ends their playoff hopes, as catching the Outlaws for the division title is realistically the only way to reach the playoffs for the Bandits at this point. For the Tuts, they look to keep pace for the division lead as the Defiant are on a bye, before taking a long extended break themselves. Their three remaining games after this week is home for Chicago, at New Orleans, and at Chicago. They could genuinely help decide who wins the United West despite not being in their division. But for now, they'll try to keep Montreal from claiming sole possession of first place in their own division for the time being. The key for the Tuts is simply to get healthy, and get this lingering knee injury finally dealt with for Roman Oliviera.
